it was good to see our Franks dominating the carrier strikes over Mili but what was giving me real pleasure is this tank Blitz in Western India... unspotted by the enemy (Mundy said he didn't even saw them coming) we moved our 1st Tank Army with all available tank units in India to Mangalore which has a big airfield and a medium sized port where we spotted about halve a dozen units... according to recon there should have been mostly support units with at best one combat unit but due to the earlier losses the enemy had only secondary troops there to run the airfield and port at Mangalore... Mundy was really lucky here that we didn't achieve the needed 5:1 to take the base at the first assault as there were also around 100 enemy fighters at the base which would have been all destroyed...

wouldn't that be a story to overrun a level 8 airfield in the far West of India in August 1944 with a Japanese tank Army and destroy four USAAF fighter squadrons on the ground? Anyways, I'm sure the next attack will do the trick, the fighters will be flown out but in the end the forced retreat will do even more damage to the enemy units as we were able to disable quite a lot this turn already...

WOW!!! Maloelap's garrison fends off the next enemy attack and the US troops are stuck at the landing sites... considering the 200 av on the atoll we suffer severe losses too though, naval gunfire and the enemy shock attack left us with literally no combat power for tomorrow but that's the third attack on Maloelap where we could inflict such losses on the US Army, totalling in losses that are worth more than two US Inf divs and even if I repeat myself, even if it takes time, the enemy can't have even nearly enough Inf squads in the pool or as replacements to ever rebuild these troops... guess all he could do is pick some units and rebuild them but not all of them...

forts are still at level 6 so we take the chance and will fly in two fully combat ready nav guard units by air transport which should boost our defensive strenght back up to 2/3 of where we started... expect some losses due to leaking CAP though as the enemy carriers are positioned only one hex East of Maloelap...

all in all it was a really succesful day even though I'm pretty sure we are going to lose Maloelap within the next couple of days after the remaining US troops will have recovered, there must be something like 700 raw av with lots of heavy artillery left...

today's air losses... make yourself a picture, if we only take the fighter losses our Franks achieved a 15:1 and if the enemy wouldn't have suffered that many damaged fighters over Mili it would be even worse... 15:1? Together with the shot down bombers the Franks get above 20:1... these same Franks that were losing 1:24 on a sweep vs some not so great Corsairs earlier... every time, every time, every time, the loop was the result of the never ending dive... dive, dive, dive, dive... delete the dive, delete the silly, totally out of whack loops... we only lost 3 Frank pilots today, what a result...

the enemy has F6F-5 already which are an upgrade to the F-3 but still not as good as the Corsairs but seeing one unit flying FM-2 still I'm sure the enemy doesn't even have enough F6F-3 to equip his carrier based squadrons so every loss further increases the shortage... that's good news for the IJN as we are soon going to field Sams...

bad idea, really bad idea... Mundy should stop the unloading at Maloelap, forcing his units on the beaches into another shock attack is insane... despite the huge losses already he got so much firepower on the atoll that all he needs is rest his units for a couple of days to get disruption down and then just deliberate attack and the atoll will fall...

that's been a surprise to us... we've spotted two bigger task forces moving North along the coast, one TF was identified as having several carriers (probably CVE)... thought it would be escorting some high value convoy to Abadan or another invasion North of Bombay but today halve the Royal Navy was bombarding Bombay... we only got naval search aircraft there so the damage done was minimal as we don't even need the airfield and even if we would, it's still fully operational...

Victory at Mangalore! As expected the base fell to our second attack but we couldn't overrun the airfield quickly enough so the enemy fighter units were flown out... huge material losses for the enemy, one unit was destroyed in the attack while the rest was retreating South into the jungle... the enemy had no AT weapons and our tank units took literally no losses, a nice and clean tank Blitz... after this raid 1st Tank Army will move East again...

god damn this retarded idiocy... there are only a couple of 81mm mortars and some 70mm guns left and the stupid automatic bombardment that is triggered by enemy landings actually destroys halve of our remaining defenders on the atoll... why the f*ck has this never been fixed? That kind of nuclear COUNTER bombardment has been as silly since release! If the enemy orders a bombardment it would cause literally no losses within our units, if WE have to bombard the routine goes totally out of whack and the so called counter bombardment is 100 times more effective...

totally insane... next shock attack by the depleted US Army units and they again suffer horrendous losses against an enemy that is in shambles... now look at the losses we took in a shock attack by several US Army divs, arty and tanks and then compare it to the counter bombardment[8|] that happened during our forced bombardment just above... funnily enough, all those units that did that counter bombardment of course also bombarded in this shock attack and then all units ATTACKED and still they couldn't even nearly do the damage that happened during the counter bombardment... so damn wrong...

it was a good turn for us though as we could defend the atoll once more as we were flying in two fresh naval guard units with Emily transports, that can fully lift these units... all guns and even the armored cars can be transported with the Emilies so our plan to strenghten the defense of the atoll and inflict more losses on the attacker was working well... unfortunately one part of the plan wasn't working all so well, more about that in the next post... Mundy is in the process to totally wreck several US Army divs here and it's only the third small atoll he has attacked in the Marshalls... with the losses on Roi-Namur, Kwajalein and Maloelap (the attack now and the earlier one) the losses in US Army squads must be well over 1000 squads already, not even counting the losses in the support squads, guns and vehicles... and then he hasn't attacked one of the bigger atolls (30.000 stacking) yet, perhaps he wants to bypass them but Mili and the fortresses in the Gilberts are the really dominating ones with level 5 airfields so he would have to escort pretty much every convoy going into the Marshalls with carriers or risking heavy losses due to air attacks if we get a chance to do so...

if you take a look at the air losses today you will note why our plan to reinforce Maloelap was only partially working as planned... well, we could airlift both nav guard units onto the atoll which lead to another two full US Army rgts dying on the beaches during the assault but our Emily units also took crippling losses as 61 out of 72 were shot down by enemy carrier based fighters... so far Mundy has positioned his carriers one hex next to his invasion targets during every amphib operation and has also done so until yesterday when all carriers were one hex East of Maloelap... I expected a dozen Emilies lost to leaking Cap and thought that would be acceptable but the enemy moved all his carriers into Maloelap's hex which meant our slow transports flew into the Cap of hundreds of carrier based fighters...

the result was a massacre... we got enough transports in the pool/production to make up for the losses but we also lost the same number of crews which equates to 1/8 of our monthly IJNAF pilot replacements and the pool has been empty since mid 42... when I say empty I really mean empty... at the beginning of each month all those 480 replacement pilots of the absolute lowest rating (exp on average in the low single digits) are going into my training units...

another fun fact and to me another wrong, no matter if you have fighters in the same hex as the transports go, you can shoot them all down, they still deliver ALL their load, so even though we lost 80% of our transports today they delivered 100% of their load which enabled us to still hold the atoll and further bleed the attacker...

it really looks like we could be able to repell the enemy invasion a second time even though our troop strenght is declining... even the deliberate attack achieves nothing, not even a fort was knocked down... enemy carriers still in the Maloelap hex so no chance to fly in reinforcements... being totally overstacked it may get hard to get disruption down for the Allied...

we were pushing another small supply convoy into Mili as long as we are able to do so and while the convoy was spotted by Avengers (most likely from the carriers at Maloelap) it were aircraft from Roi-Namur flying strikes at max range... the enemy had no chance vs our Franks... during our last carrier engagement it was a shock to see that our Zekes had a really hard time to down Helldivers, usually it took at least two passes to down a bomber but the better armed Franks take them down easily which means that the Sam won't have problems either... Dauntless' and Avengers are shot down easily, even by Zekes... I have absolutely no explanation for it though as the Helldiver has the same durability as the Dauntless (31) and the Avenger even got 32 and still the Helldiver proved extremely hard to down by my Zekes...

enemy units on Maleolap got a short rest and were ordered to deliberate attack again today and their adjusted assault value was horribly reduced due to disruption... the amphib landing, previous failed attacks and totally overstacked assault beaches make this look like our defenders can once more hold the atoll, can they? With every attack the losses to the US Army units further grow and Allied operations turn out to be like frontal attacks at Verdun...

another milestone in IJ air R&D as our engineers got the first R&D line of the Ki-94-II running in early August 44... we have already 3,500 Ha-44 engines in the pool so we also get the engine bonus and therefor I expect the fighter to become operational in early 45 and it will equip the majority of our IJAAF fighter units...

the very early availabilty of the Nakajima Ha-44 engine was the reason to go for the Ki-94 and not the Ki-83 which I would rate slightly better, mainly due to all center lined armament and the longer range while it has only 30 durability vs the 34 of the Ki-94... if you build the Jill you need Ha-44 engines and if you then go for the Grace there is no aircraft left that uses these engines other than the Ki-94 and by the time you get R&D running you accumulate thousands of these engines even with only modest production numbers early on... so it should be easier to get the Ki-94 and also more cost effective as the Ki-83 uses two engines and these precious engines are also needed for the Sam and the Shinden so you will be hard pressed to produce enough of these late war engines, let alone produce enough to get the engine bonus for R&D... wasn't hard for me to decide in favour of the Ki-94...

Neither as the Allied nor the Japanese would I convert all of them. Why should one? Especially as the Allied, you've got so many naval support squads you can basically rearm an Iowa BB at a small port if you want to. Guess I've got 12 AKE spread around the map and that's easily enough. In fact I've probably not used them even halve a dozen times so far. So please refrain from calling my opponent an idiot. [:-]

nothing really happening other than nav search showing enemy carriers moving away from Maloelap and during the turn I suddenly realize the enemy has evacuated all troops from the atoll... VICTORY on Maloelap, a second time the invaders have been repulsed at heavy losses... without propper support like constant air attacks and naval bombardments an atoll is extremely hard to take if the defenders have high forts and all infantry bringing up the assault value up to 200...

the victory at Maloelap wasn't the only good news today as IJNAF engineers report the first Shinden R&D factory was fully repaired... unlike with the Ki-94 we won't enjoy the engine bonus for the next months as all Ha-43 engines are going into the production of the Sam so it will take until the beginning of 1945 to have enough engines in the pool to get the engine bonus for the Shinden... I still expect the fighter being available in the first halve of 45...

the B-29 is what I fear the most in the game as the Japanese due to it's damn range...

and the bombload ... huge ...

yes the bombload is frightening but it doesn't cause as much of a problem to me as does the range. If you have three major bases you want to defend it's feasable, even against 4Es, no matter if B-17, B-24 or B-29. Put 200 fighters in each base on CAP and the enemy pays for attacking, even though you won't stop them. Mundy attacked Calcutta with 100+ B-29 and faced 200 Franks/Georges and lost 50% of the bombers. Something the Allied can't afford. The problem starts if you suddenly don't have 3 bases in range of 4Es you want to defend at all cost, but a dozen. You can't put 200 fighters in a dozen bases to defend them, so you have to focus on the three most important and the rest will die.

our Army in Western India is closin in on Goa, the tank units coming on the secondary road and all the infantry and artillery is going in on the major road... two tank rgts will then flank the base to the E and NE to cut off any retreat path... the only chance for the Allied is a major seaborn evacuation attempt that has to happen soon, doubt the enemy will have a chance to resist the Japanese attack, some 9000 av are going to attack here... we have spotted 30 enemy units at the base...

our Army has entered Goa and we order an intelligence bombardment to see what we are facing... we get the needed intel but the bombardment routine completely trashes three of my artillery units... WE are doing the bombardment here and WE are taking the losses... that's not FOW, Japanese losses were real... nearly 1500 enemy av at the base and still way over 100 fighters reported there... ordering a first deliberate attack while our tank rgts are still in movement to cut off the base... we have naval search up but so far we haven't spotted any bigger naval operation to mount a Dunkirk style evacuation... if we destroy this stack of troops in Western India then our most Western flank is secure once and for all without any chance for the enemy to recover...
