Things are obviously different in the RAF than the RN where you go where you're sent.
Maybe not - i suspect if someone is WANTED (i.e. needed) in their service, and they are nearing time to "re-up"/reenlist, you might have a bit of leverage. Probably a lot LESS leverage just after you re-sign.

Dixie, when is your enlistment up for renewal?

I have no leverage on the RAF, I'm trying to extend my service but (1) I'm just an airman and (2) we're overmanned and they're trying to shed excess personnel.  No idea if I'm wanted or needed, my paperwork is in and hopefully being considered.  I've got a choice of posting because of the nature of the posting (family reasons), and because I've managed to build a good reputation on my current squadron they're willing to push harder to get me where I want to go so that my family are happy.

Our Navy always wants you to say where you want to go. They call it a "dream sheet". The idea is to get you to put lots of work and thought into it so that they can totally crush your dreams ,desires , and fondest whishes. [:D]

A favorite cartoon of mine, Broadsides in "The Navy times" a few years ago did a good one on this matter. A young officer on the phone with his detailer "I'll make it easy for you...any combatant on either coast". The detail in the next block is penciling in..."right. Sub tender Diego Garcia". [:D]

In my entire naval experince , I've only met one detailer you could absolutely trust. As he once told me, with a name likt his , he had no option. AW1 Dickover. [:D]

Nik,
I noticed in a thread on the main page you mentioned Gamble's book on Rabaul. I've been eyeing that one as a potential purchase. Do you recommend?

you mean the "thread that shall not be mentioned' now that our boy and his pom pom supporter have arrived. [;)]

Yes...highly recommended with one cavet. If you've already done some research on Port Morosby's air battles you might be disapointed at the lack of Shores like treatment in places. Also the 1943 era of Fortress Rabaul gets short shrift.

Gamble doesn't really break much new ground except in providing some juicy specifics on No75 squadron's blooding at the hands of Tainan AG....(and no....they were not always outnumbered, were not at low power, nor had the sun in their eyes at the time) as well as 8th FG. He refines the relationship between Kenney, Mac and his subordinates and gives more info on the development of skip bombing that was less superficially covered in Bergerud.

Morning tithe guys, still in Dunedin Hospital getting tests. Getting a Colonoscopy this morning which sounds like fun. The problem I have is weight loss, when from 86kg to 65kg in the last 3 months. Also now have fluid retention around my organs, and in the lower legs, which is now putting my weight up 70kg. So basically the Doctors haven't got a clue what is wrong, because so far all the tests have comeback clear.

Then yesterday a another bad quake to the north in Christchurch, but this one has loss of life. They sent all the walking patients home from this hospital last night, because there are casualties coming here from Christchurch. They are starting to arrive this morning, and the staff are saying there are some very badly injured people among them.
Des,

Was the coloscopy an implied threat for you to stop losing weight? As in, "Stop losing so much bloody weight or we'll put this thing up there again!"? Hope you get everything sorted out soon, mate.

Glad to hear that you're OK from the earthquake too. So sorry to hear about the other loss of life.[:(]

sigh...I get annoyed at people in the general forum.

There are too many people who take themselves too seriously over there. This is the home of those who don't take themselves too seriously. [:D]

Enjoy a rum punch and a hockey game. Everything will seem better after that. [8D]
