Cantona2,
1. Urban hexes can be determined by pressing 1 and if the hex says either Cu or Lu, it is urban (coastal or land respectively).
2. I don't know about the exact carrying capacity of the Long Island in this mod, but I suspect that a 24 plane squadron of Wildcats would push it over 115% (say to 150%!). At that level no missions, whether CAP or other, would be flown.

You're correct. CVE Long Island carrying capacity is 16. I could still put a 14 a/c squadron for example and they would still fly.

The gigantic game of chess continues. NC has over 1000 AVs across all its bases and outposts are already active at Luganville. Suva receives its first dive bomber squadrons and Pago-Pago received its first reinforcements as the sea lanes seem clear of his subs.
China is strangely quiet though recent movements suggest a move against by southern-central front. His movement on my right flank has stopped just north of Sian and i have blocked the road to Chungking that leads from the North East. Yenan is adeqautely supplied from the air.
The Aleutian Islands now sport two level 4 AF's and three level 4 ports and are heavily defended and supported.
In a Burma a further Japanese unit was identified by recon units. The 134th IJA Base Force was supporting his forward airfield at Meiktila that keeps sending up a CAP of 18 Oscars. There are still no strikes against Mandalay from Rangoon and the silence on his part is quiet nerve wracking.

Our brave bomber boys fly into the teeth of Japanese fighters and despite the damage to their aircraft they get through, deliver they payloads and make it back to base. [:D]

Elsewhere in the theatre, SS O20 pays for its pateince by sinking two fish into a a large tanker in Brunei. SS KXIV attacks but misses the AK Taga Maru already damaged by the Finback at Truk a few days ago. Its currently stalking its prey back to Rabaul, its destination, in the hope of scoring a hit before it unloads at the base.
The first lightnings are in the replacement pool and they will go to refit a sqaudron in Burma, where the action is at its hottest.
In Australia a RAAF Base Force and the 1st Motorised Brigade are heading to Tenant Creek to build up the base. The ANZAC Hq is already at Alice Springs with a view to rebasing at Daly Waters to draw supply to these bases in order to support their build up as back bases for Northern Australia.
The Colorado Battle Group, also includes the Nevada, Portland and Northampton is south of Luganville steaming towards Brisbane to add its guns to Fortress Australia. The CV Wasp is a week away and she will also go to Australia to help the Yorktown and Indomitable. Force Z is covering NZ and is now based out of Auckland.

Disaster as Mandalay falls to a Japanese shock attack. A disappointing day for the Allied cause that had hoped to make a stand at Mandalay. What makes it worse is that my units retreated in direction of Lashio not Miytykina [:(]

30th May 1942.
First six months are almost over and its a mixed result. I owe my subamrines the position I'm in as they have certainly sunk a fair number of his transport ships, AK Habukasan Maru the latest victim. GH claims a shortage of supply and fuel everywhere. Either hes messed up Jap production or my submarine campaign is having very good dice rolls. The only downer is the high casualty in the valuable Dutch submarines.
June 1942 brings with it P-38's, Avengers and Liberators as well as RAF upgrades which at least means i can achieve some sort of equality in terms of equipment quality.
In Burma the race for Miytykina is on but hes got the railway [:(]
End of the month SitRep in next post.

Shortage of supply means only one thing: with no pink underpanties left, the Japanese behemoth is doomed, running around in the jungle with nothing but large leaves to hide their intimacy! The Allies shall prevail!

Game will finally resume after a virus problem, a Vista install and some Art issues.
We're now into June and soon the 'Arsenal of Democracy' will be churning out weapons by the hundreds. The first incling of this is the CV Wasp arriving at Panama City from the Atlantic Ocean were it was escorting convoys. Its aircraft are needed in the Pacific and it will immediatley deploy to Brisbane to rendevous with the Colorado battle gropu already there.
Once again Dutch submarines are the scourge of Japanese shipping. An AK had two torpedoes rupture its side in Manila. A large amount of shipping was detected in the harbour and I feel this heralds a redployment of his Phillipine Divisions into other theatres. A mopping up of the DEI and an assault of Northern Australia perhaps? SS Finback's luck finally run out in the shallow waters around Palau, and is now leaking fuel oil and is limping Westwards to Pearl after running into a heavy ASW Task Force.
In Burma a MAJOR cock-up saw troops marching to Miytykina decided to do so via Mandalay and therefore shock assault and incur stupid losses. The route finding in this game sometimes amazes me!!!. The next couple of days should also see the first Lightnings in action in Burmese skies. The experienced flyers of the 1st AVG will sweep his Oscars and Mandalay in what i hope is a nasty surprise for the good General.

3rd June 1942.
The Silent Service strikes again, though this time some of the eggs lain by the Silent Service strike!
SS Dolphin intercepts and strikes at a convoy resupplying Johnston Island and riddles the AK Tamashima Maru with bullets, shells and 1 torpedo. Liberators at Hilo have been put on Naval Attack orders but probably wont strike due to his CAP. Two more submarines passing West of JI have been revectored there to try and stike as his ships unload.
He is also reinforcing Port Blair. An AK carrying a Base Force hit the bottom after hitting two Dutch laid mines and the SS Rover, on station in and around Port Blair since it had been occupied, failed on two strikes on an AP. The ships were heavily escorted but all attempts to hit the Rover came to naught. What a pity my CV's at Colombo are in dry dock as a quick strike here may had been in the offing. I will try and disrupt his building up of PB as much as possible.

5th June 1942.
P-38 Lightnings make their operational debut over the skies of Burma and have an immediate impact as they shoot down 4 zeroes over Mandalay for no loss thus opening the way for our bombers who poundrd the Japanese 5th Infantry Division marching on Lashio with no interceptors to harass them.
The down side is that a raid on Chittagong, flying out of Rangoon, was able to hit a troop transport that was delivering the 224th RAF Base Force to Chittagong. Though the Hurricanes on CAP performed well, 2 Zeroes and one Nell for one of their own, they could not prevent all three ships receving torpedo hits. Though none were sunk a CAP of P-38's might have deterred the Japanese pilots.
Day Air attack on TF, near Chittagong at 31,25
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 14
G3M Nell x 22
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 14
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed
G3M Nell: 3 damaged (one later confirmed shot down)
Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIb: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Allied Ships
AP Felix Roussel, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage [:@]
AP Chitral, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage [:@]
AP Empire Trooper, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage [:@]
Allied ground losses:
93 casualties reported [:@]
Guns lost 1
On the other side of the Pacific the B-17 squadrons of the USAAF had their worst day of their campaign against Johnston Island. 7 of them were shot down by the Island's fighters. They were flying at 20,000 feet in order to attain more hits. The General Staff has concluded that the mortality rate is not compensated by satisfactory accuracy rates. Therefor future rates will resume at 30,000 feet. The campaign against the Japs there will again be spearheaded by the silent service and their mines.

RE: Fighting the Italian Samurai Cantona2(a) vs Gen.Hoepner(j)
The 6th of June sees more movement in the Burmese theatre of war. Japanese paras drop east of Lashio, no doubt hoping to complete an encirclement of our positions there. What GH didnt know was that two Burmese Brigades and one RAF base force were moving along the same trials the paras dropped on, to Myitkynia. From the East a futher Chinese Division approaches and the hunters suddenly become the hunted. A shock attack ordered for tomorrow should see the road cleared of japanese paratroopers.
Elsewhere our submarines again strike. This time SS Halibut on station around Christmas Island where she hits AK Atlantic Maru. SS Perch in Kwajelein was less successful having missed a tanker and an oiler approaching the atoll base. She had to scurry away with the detonation of depth charges ringing in the ears of her crew. Two more victims of the silent service were chalked up today. AK Yae Maru, at Manila, credited to the SS KXVII and the AK Yasukawa Maru that had bumped into a sub laid mine.
Two more liberator sqaudrons have arrived and the 1st Marine Division is heading towards the South Pacific. CV Wasp and her escorts left Panama City today.

Hi Cantona -
I'm following along here - your AAR is a nice preview of what I have to look forward to in my own game since I'm about 2 months behind you.
P-38's.... ugh, not looking forward to those at all. [:(]

Ho man, you're a lucky boy - my subs just won't attack a thing... Do you think CHS plays a role in this? I mean they have aggressive officers, they are in deep-water hex against unescorted stuff, and still...
Maybe I'll have to ask my opponent to wear pink panties or something then...

Are paradrops on non dot/base hexes allowed in this game? Or have I misread "Japanese paras drop east of Lashio"

Nice to see you posting here again. Drops on nondot or nonbase hexes are not allowed unless they are part of an encirclement strategy, obviously incurring any risks and open to counter attacks. i think that dropping paras 60 miles away with the full intention of relieving them in realistic circumstances is acceptable. What i do not find acceptable is a para drop on an empty base 1000 kms away with no possibility of releif. Paras were designed as shock troops that were to hold until releived. What GH tried to do is acceptable, only thing was that i had that hex covered so bad luck to him. Think about Market Garden. Paras were dropped, XXX Corps rushed up Hells Highway to releive them and the Germans threw in a plethora of Kampfgruppen and adhoc units, practically made up of whatever units they could get hold off, to stop them. 101st and 82nd airborne were releived but Arnhem was not. The potential to releive them was there, too many cock ups prevented that. A 'gamey' equivalent is to drop a para unit in Dacca, for example imagine its ungarrisoned, and expect Japanese units in Manadaly to relieve them from a long way away and the whole British army in front of them.
The only other reason for paras in that hex could be the unit that was pushed out of Lashio a few weeks ago but i doubt they would have any fighting value left.

@ Fishbed
as regards subs my motto is use them hard. at any one time i may have upto 20+ subs in dock with 30+ system damage but i think over 70 transports already sunk by sub action by June 1942 is worth the risks. Ive been slightly unfortunate that there is a high casualty rate in Dutch subs in this game but as with everything that is done in Witp the risk is there. Submarines are the only part of this game i understand well so i use them to good effect. TBH i havent really looked at the leaders i rather rely on intell, (Bohdi's) an absolute necesseity for the buddding sub commander, location and luck to get these hits. Last turn i had about another 5 sub contacts but no hits, but they are still there being a pain in the General's arse [:D]
