Kind of stupid question, but I don't think the textures I'm picking are being used by MM:

I'm using tiled_forest03.bmp as a brush base ground texture:

Yet I get this texture in the game.

Ryan set your X and Y tile repeats to something much lower (like 50).

John, here is a direct link to the SRTMs: SRTM downloads there seems to be an error in the link you provide in the MM (when it asks you to download the SRTM for your area).

Quick observations: I think the GE interface could use some additional zoom levels, also I found it tough to actually get to the area I was interested in without a lot of panning of the image.. it would be nice to be able to enter coordinates or have a better zoom function that allows you to zoom out a bit further.

I'll have a few more as I continue to play. Nothing to show yet, just having fun, playing and fooling around.

Bil,

If you type in a link in the MM during the import process, then MM will remember this for the future so you don't need to type it in again.

The link you provided above "ftp://xftp.jrc.it/pub/srtmV4/SRTM_Mask_GeoTiff" is a link to older V3 SRTM data and won't work in MM as the naming conventions of the files has changed since V3.

The default link in the MM "ftp://xftp.jrc.it/pub/srtmV4/tiff , zip" I just this very second tested and it works fine. It also contains the latest V4.1 SRTM in the correct naming format to work with MM.

So I am confused which version of MM are you working with?

I don't think I quite follow you here. You can roll your mouse wheel in and out on the map whilst in GM and it will zoom in and out as you please (20 zoom levels). You can even zoom out to high earth orbit if you choose. Or was there some other issue? It would be nice if the GM.api allowed fractional zooming but they don't so neither can I, that is the only zoom issue I have with MM. I can get to any place on Earth in less than 10 seconds right now though.

Thanks for your comments

The next MM build (which should be ready to go any day now) comes with over 30 new textures!

Here is a taste ...

Could be why I never could get it to work last night... [;)] regardless your link still does not work for me: "IE cannot display this webpage".

Well I was playing with it on my laptop, without my mouse connected, so no mouse wheel... I'll play around with it again and see what I can do.

Update, in my test this morning I got the file download to work in the MM just fine. However I have determined to create my own height maps as the SRTM data is way too broad for my taste. Haven't played with the other tools too much yet, but this is an amazing tool John.

Did you get this message when MM first fired up, before the splash page? I get it myself moderately often. usually when I've got two or three other windows open. If i close the popup, close the Window Frame, then try again it usually comes up the next time, occaasionally takes 4 or 5 times. Stridor adjust the timing some, and I think he was open to adjusting it more if problem persisted. I suppose it could be my network connection being a bit clogged too.

Strange that you can't get to the webserver? Is anyone else having any problems automatically getting heightmaps?

A SRTM 90m HM I use as the basis for the map and then sculpt in detail as I need it. MM also gets the height ranges for the area so that helps set up your map more realistically. Another "trick" to add in extra HM data is to actually spec a larger area than 1km and then MM will "compress" it to 1km. This will get better ground res but at the cost of compressed ground realisim.

Dang! I never even thought about laptop users (re no mouse wheel). I will add the option to toggle GM onscreen controls as well. Actually this impacts on all my software as they almost all use the mouse wheel to some extent (and you will need to use a mouse wheel to move between terrain map and height map in MM) Hmmm!

I'm very grateful for that, btw. Thanks Rick![8D]

No problem, glad to be able to help (since I'm totally inept at the modeling side - I can give something back to community).

Benpark is going to look over my draft and offer comments - so maybe it won't turn out too bad. Now, if I can just find a way to wire my word processor into Stridors mind so I can keep up with the features he adds!

Rick I think Bil meant that he couldn't get the HM to display in MM by using the older SRTM 3 data (due to naming conventions). Why Bil can't get to the SRTM v4 server data but everyone else seemingly can is a mystery? This is why it will be a good idea for Erik to get the data on the Matrix servers and then let everyone get it from a stable place.

Well, Panzer Command itself really prefers that folks have a mouse wheel for the camera controls too, so I'd say to folks who use a laptop (like me), it might be a good thing to get an external mouse to attach for gaming. Personally, there are a LOT of games I would not be able to stand playing with just my touch pad, I end up working faster with my external mouse too.

FWIW I usually use an external mouse, but last night I was sitting in front of the TV with tmy laptop on my lap, hence no mouse.  I have no problem with you making the mouse mandatory.  BTW I can still move around the map in PCK with my laptop without a mouse, but not in the MM.  John, don't change anything because of my ineptitude.  [;)]

ROFL

I was going to add that you really need the mouse wheel to actually PLAY the game, but Erik beat me to it.

Not before I added the ability to control the GM map with new tools (they are easy to understand) as well as build a much better shift between HM and terrain map. Now if you click a HM sculpt button it takes you the HM at the last setting you used. You can change the HM opacity by holding down shift and rolling the mouse wheel over the map. And zoom the HM map by using the mouse wheel alone. So it is now useable by people with no mousewheel but it will still be better (ie you will have more functions and work faster) if you have a mousewheel.

Wouldn't it be an easy thing to 'map' the mouse wheel's 3 step 'zoom' to keys?

The MM is a bigger project, I understand. People don't need to create Big Art at a portable computer. But the PzC game is ideal for a lap top. Eg it doesn't need as much horse power as a FPshooter; PBEM is something one does while checking email and commuting.

Meanwhile an external mouse for the lap top hinders the Laptop's portablilty.

I was specifically going to request that the zoom feature be mapped to the keyboard. Maybe 8- 9- 0.

Images should be easier to load at Matrix.

1-2-3 doesn't zoom in a unit's zoom ("binoculars") on my desktop PC. 1-2-3 does create different size frame zooms above units.

Is PzC supposed to have 1-2-3 synced up with a unit's scroll-wheel zoom?

Stridor,

Have you seen this before ?

I came across a bug regarding the T/MAP import using a bmp from the disk ...

When you load a T/Map from the disk and try to select the new textures reference color with the eyedropper it will bring up the windows pallette ... see screenshot below.

Rob

EDIT NOTE : An easy way to test this is to import the Proc_TerrainMap bmp .

Rob,

Not a bug. By design. Notice that you have the "grid" texture selected. As this is applied across the whole map there would be no point associating it with a terrain color. For "grid" you can set the color of the grid with the color dialog. So if you want a fat green grid at 107 meter intervals at 50% transparency you can have that!

Regards

S.

EDIT: You could pick another texture and try again or simply add the texture "road" and then associate a color with it.

S.
