Close Combat - Last Stand at Arnhem

Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem is a highly enhanced new release of Close Combat, using the latest Close Combat engine with many additional improvements. Its design is based on the critically acclaimed Close Combat – A Bridge Too Far, originally developed by Atomic Games, as well as the more recent Close Combat: The Longest Day. This is the most ambitious and most improved of the new Close Combat releases, but along with all the enhancements it retains the same addicting tactical action found in the original titles! Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem comes with expanded force pools, reserve & static battlegroups, a troop point buying system, ferry and assault crossings, destructible bridges, static forces and much more! Also included in this rebuild are 60+ battles, operations and campaigns including a new enhanced Grand Campaign!

I hate RTS games but I don't consider the CC games as RTS. CC has a much slower and realistic pace to it and I never feel rushed or in a state of frantic exhaustion.[X(] I can't wait for Arnhem as I think it is the best of the series hands down.

Agreed...my feelings exactly

The point I was trying to make is that in TLD all the flags are American and no-one seemed to care. Why care now when they're not?

Because Americans are demanding.

Alright, I MAY give this game a chance, despite I absolutely oath RTS.  It's not that I can't do RTS, I used to do a LOT of Starcraft/warcraft back in the day, and that's perhaps why I feel in love so easily with turn-based wargames instead.

But I will remain a little sceptical for now, after all, I am in the most pro-biased thread(s) to begin with.

The CC series in certainly not RTS. True, it is a real time tactical engine as opposed to turn based but that's where the similarities end. Your men don't have "hit points". They're either dead, healthy, wounded or incapacitated. Your men have several psychological states. If they're panicked then they wont follow your orders because they're too busy cowering or running away. You don't build structures or harvest resources. You have limited ammo, limited men and materials. Tanks don't have "hit points" either. Your 75mm Shermans will not be able to whittle away at the Tiger down the road until it's health is zero. They will have to get a close flank or rear shot to knock it out. CC is not a click fest. There are few units on the map and every unit moves at realistic paces and since you don't have to harvest resources you can focus on tactics.

Purchase points are good because you have to be more careful on what troops you deploy but it does result into non-historical combinations.
Battle groups are good because it keeps you to a historical force pool of a certain Unit. But it makes the game easier to win since you can just get the best troops on the first round and thrash the AI battle after battle who does not use an optimal force mix.

And now Arnhem is offering a campaign with the Battle Group system with purchase points. Merging both concepts sounds good.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think the combo of the two systems should really provide for some great battlefield decisions. I can't wait to try it out!

I watched the video and feel as an advertising tool it fell short, really short of its goal. I was hoping for more from it. I like the system so I will probably buy the game. Others may watch and not buy it based on the lackluster presentation. [>:]

My opinion of course.

the video was alright. great sound effects as far as weapons but i don't hear any of the "idle" battle chatter. is there any in the game or is there any of the "chatter" in TLD or WAR?

by chatter i mean the soldiers radio chatter

is there much of that in the series?
thanks garrett

The Radios didn't work in Operation Market garden to call HQ or call in artillery support, battery power was low or flat... let alone idle radio chatter.

Well, it's decided this is going to be "THE" birthday game for me(B-Day is 7.12), give or take the July drop date.

I just hope the Son Town maps are as fun in this verison as they were in the classic, esp when the Panzer Brigade shows up with it's Panthers and Panzer IV L70s

Interesting in the shot of vehicles and planes in the game posted, it looked like a sdkfz.234/2 was included, but I don't think any of the units had them. Just 1.SS, 2.Pz, Panzer Lehr and 20.Panzer having issued all but 8 of the 101 of the Pumas armoured cars.

But also the rest of the voice acting remains exactly the same as all other previous versions. It's ok but i would have welcomed an update or make over on the audio part...

yeah, im not looking for anything to deep or complex with vocals.

simple stuff like hearing soldiers say stuff like "incoming" "take cover" "get down", when taking fire and when they accept orders you could hear stuff like "get moving squad" or "time to to move" or something. just some flavor

this is one of the things i actually did enjoy quite abit about "company of heroes" my favorite line in the game was "tie your f-ing laces private" and "get moving, there's a war one" lol cool stuff

Real Para will install into Version v.2.0b..so no need for Patch if U don't want it.
Check the Read Me's or DL page for any information.

Patch 3.4 is aTournamentHouse.com approved for ladder play patch.
It changes some data etc...(full details in read me. Attachment 1)

To uninstall back to the 2.0b patch settings run the
3.4_Patch_AutoUninstall.exe file.
This will overwrite the 3.4 data files with 2.0b data and will add a
2.0b update.txt file.

To swap back to the 3.4 patch settings run the
3.4_Patch_AutoInstall.exe file again.

so easy to swap back if U don't like it.

After U have done para try Afrika...or 1940 mod...Click on the link on Mafia's Afrika mod
to have a peek at what U are in for...Should keep you busy for a long, long time.

Para & the 3.4 patch...are very different try them both...Me i love the Afrika mod.
Have FUN!!!
