7th and 8th sept 1942

Things are apace now both in Burma and in china .

China 1st

The huge jap army that took Kweilin has moved north and met the chinese road block , heavy shelling has been reported in the area as well as massive japanese bomber formations seemingly flying over at will. china Air HQ has been promised some modern fighters as soon as plans and forces are in place to opeate them closer to the front lines (House rule , only US airforces can be serviced by US AV support , with both CW and US Aviation units in chungking we can fy some out to front line forces while transferring over some P40's from india to help the chinese sirforce).

China ..

Japans withdrawn from the contested hex before i attacked , and i think i see why now , showing up is more heavy jap formations coming up from the south. Looks like a race to block the sian road and I'm stuck on an old deer track. At least it'll get more interesting from now on.

Ok lets see...since Rob gets all the glory and loses all the tanks I will try to at least get a mine-hit on one of my old BBs.

This is the only thing happening on the US side except boring logistics and arrogant British RAF ambassadors asking for some more of those
mediocre US planes... [;)]

Operation "Pay attention somewhere else Yamamoto" continues.
Marcus island again, I continue to make a show of that unworthy piece of sand. Since Mike reacted so nicely to my first bombardement
I will try something similar with a small difference. Remember he went in with 4 CMs after the last attack, one which has been sunk by
SS Drum. Thats means in theory a 3 months production of mines could be there.

I gonna collect that.

He got fighters on Marcus now also btw.

So this is the plan:
First group of 1DD, and 2DMS will arrive tomorrow and start sweeping.
1 day later (at least thats the theory) the bombardement force makes another run. Again led by an old BB which I can bear losing
in case the sweepers are not effective enough.

Lets see how this works out. My counteroffensive plans continue, but I am really starting to lose patience. Wanna draw some blood.
But this is still a bit in the future so my only chance to see some action is playing naval guerilla...

Yamamoto seems to be looking in the right spot...

Ok this was fast.

Mistake number 1: Trying to emulate being predictable is a bad idea if you surprizingly by chance ARE predictable because of that, and do not have the forces to back it up. (fatal) [;)]
Mistake number 2: Gettings sloppy and chosing the usual route to Marcus (not fatal, but could have been - not that Mistake 1 wasn´t fatal enough anyway. Thats exactly the kind of luck I need in WitP [8|])

Mike set up a nice trap at Marcus Isl. which goes to the lessons learned folder, but at least with a slight grin.

The first part of the operation worked like planned, even though there I should have known already that Mike is better prepared than I thought.
The mine-sweeper force went in and ran into a total of 3 subs, 1 sightes 80nm SE of Marcus, the second one sunk 40nm SE and another
one driven off right at the island.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Sep 11, 42

ASW attack near Marcus Island at 124,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-20, hits 6, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Selfridge

SS I-20 launches 6 torpedoes at DD Selfridge
DD Selfridge fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Selfridge fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Selfridge attacking submerged sub ....
Debris floats to surface in area of attack!
Escort abandons search for sub

At least a sub kill.
Here I was still biting nails if BB Tennessee would run over the other 2 wolves hunting in the area.

TF 281 encounters mine field at Marcus Island (123,85)

Allied Ships
DMS Lamberton
DMS Boggs
DD Selfridge

12 mines cleared

As expected, ran into a minefield and cleared some, preparing the ingress route of Tennessee.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Sep 12, 42

Night Naval bombardment of Marcus Island at 123,85

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
H6K4 Mavis: 1 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships
BB Tennessee
DD Phelps
DD Porter
DD Stack
DD Lansdowne

Japanese ground losses:
141 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 4 disabled

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 43
Port supply hits 1

Here I was still a quite confident USN commander, everything according to plan.

Until....

Morning Air attack on TF, near Marcus Island at 129,86

CV´s? Why? Why now? Mmmmust kkkkeeeep fffrom whining.... [X(]

Ok lets skip the combat reports, you know how they look.
Here is what is left afloat or not so afloat after the attack:

BB Tennessee, Bomb hits 8, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage <- goner
DD Phelps, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage <- goner
DMS Lamberton, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk <- well...obviousely...
DMS Perry, Bomb hits 7, and is sunk <- glugg as well
DMS Boggs, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage <- goner

Those two will have a pretty tough day tomorrow, still wondering if I should send Tennessee north in direction of Adak with the two now less streamlined
DDs as escort, just to have at least a theoretical egress route in case Mike wants to press the issue.
DD Stack, Bomb hits 1
DD Porter, Bomb hits 1

DD Selfridge and DD Lansdowne are undamaged and will make Midway.

This is what you definitely call a defeat with two positive aspects:
- I know where 3 of Mikes CV´s are, interestingly he seems to have split KB, but maybe only for refits, who knows.
- He obviousely still thinks Marcus Island worth defending, at least if he can make it costly for me. Moving CVs ther just to clobber an old BB, I don´t know.

I took a risk to go there, but he did the greater one IMO. My CV´s could have been part of the parade.

So, not much lost. But I have to find other ways to keep the pressure on Marcus Island and I need to get the remainder of the fleet out.

Yes I was surprised too it worked so "well". What I have to ponder on now is whether I should keep quiet for a while
to or keep going to reinforce his belief that Marcus is a primary and not a diversionary target.

I think I got his attention and there will be an invasion here in a couple of weeks though it is only a cover up for other theatres.
Was this enough to make hime react wrong when the transports show up? I´m not sure yet.

The USN did have a bad day today , and we Briys dont think ALL american bombers are mediocre , actually the newfangled ones with 4 engines are rather spiffy if truth be told.

On my end of the map japan launched 2 assaults , one in java and one in china.

Java i imagine he thinks i must be short on supply there by now , nope , still got 43000 piled up in waterproof bunkers, the outer trenches were taken by Japan but the valiant Dutch won the day <huzzah>.

Ground combat at Madioen (54,104)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 30553 troops, 496 guns, 88 vehicles, Assault Value = 987

Defending force 34629 troops, 377 guns, 175 vehicles, Assault Value = 955

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 4

Japanese adjusted assault: 242

Allied adjusted defense: 4378

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 18 (fort level 4)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
4192 casualties reported
Squads: 9 destroyed, 252 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 169 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 71 disabled

Allied ground losses:
416 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 34 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 46 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

We can live with 10-1 loss ratios quite happily here and unless Mike moves a big bomber force to java I'll be lasting a lot longer (maybe even untill liberation , but more on that i due time , loose lips and all that).

Now assaulting Changsha is at best a gamble , and one thats been built upto forts 7 is potentially usicide even when 1/2 the garrisons off elsewhere. Japan had turned its major bomber force this way today too but even though 200 japanese level bombers flew overhead only one engineer was wounded and a small dog found in the bottom of a crater. Level 7 forts are really resilient to air attacks. This however should be a salutory lesson for island hopping in the pacific later on in the war. Forts HURT even when manned by stick armed peasants.

Ground combat at Changsha (82,52)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 57711 troops, 576 guns, 361 vehicles, Assault Value = 2108

Defending force 39612 troops, 214 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1424

Japanese adjusted assault: 1818

Allied adjusted defense: 7529

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 4 (fort level 7)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-)

Japanese ground losses:
4869 casualties reported

Even up in Burma Japan decided on a few days worth of heavy shelling in Mandalay, Sadly for Japan if his guns are in range of my men then the couter is also true and the combined aussie (3 units) and british (2 units) of medium arty blew the hell out of forward japanese gun batteries and accompanying infantry forces.

Ground combat at Mandalay (59,46)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 51763 troops, 553 guns, 151 vehicles, Assault Value = 2175

Defending force 64603 troops, 1153 guns, 1282 vehicles, Assault Value = 1957

Japanese ground losses:
2065 casualties reported
Squads: 63 destroyed, 49 disabled
Non Combat: 39 destroyed, 36 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 21 (7 destroyed, 14 disabled)
Vehicles lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
56 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

20-1 is even better news for the allies.

all the above might just look like crowing from the CW high command , but its not as that always invites Mr Murphy to the next party, insted consider it the usual arrogance from the Ministry of War.

Allies will return the favour tomorrow with a heavy shelling of japanese troops along with a b17 raid and hopefully his heavy disruption will prevent heavy friendly casualties. We will see howeever. Not sure i mentioned this before but japans now adjacent to scwebo on the west side , not good as that threatens to cut off mandalay. This was bad timing for the Brits as armoured formations were rebuilding in mythilinka and heavy reinforcemnets are still stuck in the burmese jungle. Doubt we will lose Scwebo but it might be a short while before we can evict japan from here. Odlly both sides AF's have been v quiet here for a while. Mine because its now in china (some of it anyway) and a combined blenhiem/wellie and b25 raid hit the incoming japs near Sian. also planning a BIG air engagement soon with japans bombing hammer. So we are airlifting american and brit AV support forward and trying to build a few airfields nearer the front lines , american fighters (50 P40's) are up on the tibet border area hiding from jap recons , so all japan can see are usual chinese fighters in Chungking. If i can ill also throw in the P38E's from Burma as hurricanes take forever to transfer over because of thier short range.

More next turn chaps.

PS , Can anyone give me any tips on how to get supply to Scwebo ????? its been stuck on 19+ for weeks now even with supply pull buttons on and huge airlifts into nearby lvl 4 airfields. I thought parking HQ's and troops there would help but they seem to be starving now , meanwhile mandalay is usually fine on supply so long as i keep mythilinka topped up with transport AC from ledo. actually this is becoming a major hindrance as all i have got here is lvl 1 forts and pathetic lvl 1 AF. DEbarking the 7th armoured brigade just north of Scwebo from trains and hopefully we'll avoid being bombed but this uint sems to be a damage magnet in burma (hence refitting in mythilinka).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Sep 13, 42

Interesting turn once again , Japan continues its ground offensives in burma and in China (more a bit later).

first up though some sub action , Japanese I boat sunk an australian Armed merchantman near Efate whilst a dutch K boat sank an AKL off West Borneo.

Well that was quickly back to china where the japanese airforce is hammering chinese ground forces :-

-----------------------------

Morning Air attack on 57th Chinese Corps, at 86,41

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 38 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 47
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 12
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-Ic Sally: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
367 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 27 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 29 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled

AND same day

Morning Air attack on 37th Chinese Corps, at 75,53

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 27 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 19
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 44
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 39
Ki-49-Ia Helen x 50

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
282 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 23 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 17 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

With a few smaller packets streaming in later on thats over 200 operational bombers and about 80-90 oscar escorts. Thats a HUGE airforce for china and even given the upcoming 'ambush' unless we knock Japans confidence we will be reduced to a tangle of injured limbs in short order.

Japan also made an assault near Sian (target of the 1st airstrike posted) , as china had recenlt moved out 1 corps , japan might have thought the chinese were moving back and an easy meal in transport mode , however the rest of the chinese were fully dug in and repulsed the assult but with heavy casualties all round.

Ground combat at 86,41

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 59052 troops, 498 guns, 143 vehicles, Assault Value = 2096

Defending force 54649 troops, 250 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2141

Japanese adjusted assault: 878

Allied adjusted defense: 3637

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 4

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
3186 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 455 disabled
Non Combat: 11 destroyed, 361 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 51 disabled

Allied ground losses:
1510 casualties reported
Squads: 6 destroyed, 123 disabled
Non Combat: 13 destroyed, 162 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled

This will hopefully give us a few days break while japan reorganises , but we are not looking forward to more aerial visits and with Sian still not exactly bouyant with supply (and no non chinese AV support) not much we can do about it.

Japan continues with bombarding Mandalay , the allied counter bombardment was useless , i just dont wuite understand this aspect yet. One great news is one japanese unit died completely today from counter shelling, bad news is i deleted all my old combat reports last night and cannot tell which one ?? murpheys law strikes again.

Ground combat at Mandalay (59,46)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 50316 troops, 550 guns, 151 vehicles, Assault Value = 2104

Defending force 64579 troops, 1152 guns, 1282 vehicles, Assault Value = 1954

Japanese ground losses:
1096 casualties reported
Squads: 15 destroyed, 42 disabled
Non Combat: 13 destroyed, 40 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 5 (3 destroyed, 2 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
40 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Ground combat at Mandalay (59,46)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 54442 troops, 983 guns, 1088 vehicles, Assault Value = 1953

Defending force 61243 troops, 620 guns, 692 vehicles, Assault Value = 2061

Japanese ground losses:
8 casualties reported

Re Schwebo supply. Does Mandalay also have its supply spinners turned up. Maybe a screenshot of both locations might help, particularly as you are still in the monsoon season which limits how much supply can move to bases.

Rob,

Regarding deleting old reports; just add the "-archive" switch to your startup shortcut and you will find each turn the reports, named with the date encoded, are kept in the archive folder underneath the save folder.

Mandalay hasnt got any supply pull buttons set but does get suply to it. As you say though I'll post screen shots of both places next turn. monsoon does reduce supply to burma but not sure how much myself, anyone got any figures?

Monsoon season in AE is the ides of May to the ides of October. The effect on a base can be seen in brackets next to the supply totals in a base screen. The more base infrastructure is built up (port + AF + fort level) the greater the amount. Applies both to the front line bases and those to their immediate rear back in Assam.

BB Tennessee alive. Oo

Post by LoBaron »

Only a short update here:

BB Tennessee is still afloat, but she has 91flt and 49sys damage with still minor fires burning, about 200miles east of Marcus Island.
I have low hopes on getting her back to PH but will try.

She will first try to make Wake (Midway is too far for the 2 knots she is able to handle) going cruise speed. In the rare event she makes it I will pump
some water out and send DDs to escort her back to Pearl. But thats far in the future, first she will have to stay afloat, chances are high
that I don´t need to plan further than the next turn.

Subs will try to cover her initial "run"...

Mikes carriers have disappeared and I hope they stay gone.

Yeah like that, and a good hint it was!!

My file currently looks like this:
"D:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -cpu4 -px1920 -py1080 -archive

After I ran the turn an Archive folder was created, the last reports are still in the main save folder, so I recon after running the next turn the
new report files will be in the main, and the old report files in the archive folder.

Here is one of my startups (this one for a window size customized to my screen leaving room at the bottom for the menu bar):
"D:\My Games\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #1\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -cpu1 -dd_sw -archive -wd -pxf1440 -pyf0827 -noFire

I also have problems with my graphics card/system keeping up with animations, therefore the -noFire.

Thanks for the help , much appreciated.

As requested here is mandalay. No other base in burma or even the indian border has any pull supply buttons activated (bar ledo which i desperately trying to get more too, but given monsoon that might explain it) .

Shwebo.

the lost Japanese unit has been identified as the 41st Guards regiment ! sounds impressive on the tally count in the officers mess (Mandalay tennis club)

I think I see what your problem is at Shwebo.[8|]

1. Mandalay has a much bigger capacity than Shwebo to receive supply "daily" (bear in mind that supply doesn't necessarily flow daily from one base to another). During the monsoon, Mandalay can receive 3850 whereas Shwebo is limited to only 250.

2. Mandalay is not building anything whereas you are constructing forts at Shwebo. That consumes supplies immediately, impacting on the capacity to build up the supply depot at Shwebo. Mandalay, because it is not building anything, stockpiles every received supply point.

3. You have 122 engineer equivalent squads working at Shwebo. Every 24 hours your Shwebo engineers consume 244 supply points whilst building up your fortification level. Hence as you you can only receive a maximum of 250 supply points "daily", you really have no surplus supply to stockpile.

Thanks Alfred , My problem is that i have been trying to build forts/sirfields for months with little/no gain. I suspect now you have pointed me in the right direction, that there is no spare supply after the usual 250 daily for construction. I could try anf fly in more from Ledo/dacca but i dont want lose transports to ops losses if i can help it (or even opportunistic japanese LR CAP). I'll just live with it untll 13th Oct and see if any improvement occurs. If not then I'll just risk flying in supply and see what happens then.

The Japanese have withdrawn back over the river away from Shwebo so the lack of supply will not hamper any potential defenders. The stalemate continues. Which for the Commonwealth in autumn 1942 is a great positon to be in.
