we won't hold for long, losing all those AA units is a tragedy, just like the loss of the RN presence in the area... that AA bgd alone got 72 x 3.7 inch flak and it just recently arrived to be destroyed now... [:(] my whole defense of Ceylon is totally borked because I've sent three Ind bgd to defend Port Blair that fell on the first attempt of those two IJ divs now attacking Ceylon and I wasn't as fast in moving in reinforcements from my developed ports as the enemy could do from a jungle base like Port Blair while benefiting form the amphib bonus... damn it, how could I be that silly...

RE: The next generation - mortar (J) vs castor troy (A) - RESTRICTED!

Post by castor troy »

2 Dave float planes showed up as destroyed on the ground today, might be the prove that an enemy CA finally sank due to battle damage received at Koggala... makes it the whole RN in South East Asia lost to one IJN CA and a DD... not to forget all the units I'm going to lose at Colombo...

here comes the feared IJ attack and it was just wow, we hold easily while inflicting heavy losses within the attacker... having nearly 300 av disabled in the first attack for only minimal losses within the defender must mean a hell of a lucky die roll... I doubt that will mean we will hold the base but at least the enemy will suffer enough disablements that he can't just pick the troops up and land them yet another time using the amphib bonus on an ahistorical target... 3.5 more weeks to go with the amphib bonus... not sure where all the IJ losses originated, are all those AA guns actually participate in ground battles? So far I've thought they wouldn't do much if not nothing at all...

I think there weren't a lot turns so far when we haven't seen hundreds of IJ bombers in the air flying attacks... so far, losses to those bombers were minimal, I've lost more PBY in nav search and transport mission than the enemy lost medium bombers in combat...

once more I only have to wonder about mortars orders... he failed miserably with his deliberate attack yesterday, his troops must have accumulated disruption due to the failed attack and yet he attacks another time today getting an even worse ratio... the ratio unfortunately doesn't mean a lot when it comes down to losses and today he suffered only 1/4 of yesterday´s losses while we suffered twice the combat squads disabled... I still don't get why he ordered this attack... especially his eng units took some hits as those started to lose squads today as they must have been terribly disabled after yesterday´s attack...

night air attack? He can't be serious... not that I'm really afraid but if this is the start of some ongoing night attacks I'm going to retaliate them with massed 4E night attacks... massed means 50-60 bombers at this stage of the war... [:D] I'm no fan of night bomber strikes at all in AE but the good thing about it, as long as I'm playing the Allied I only fly them if the enemy does it too and with more bombers and more payload I usually force the enemy to stop these night attacks quite quickly...

lol, the destroyers used up 2/3 of their ammo for not even a single Japanese soldier disabled... actually, this was a test if night navalbombardments are a way to increase the horrible USN night experience but guess what, not a single point of night exp gained on any of those DD... no damage done from firing probably thousands of 5 inch shells and no experience gained... I really love the way this is modelled, the IJN starts out at godlike experience that has no real historical evidence while the USN is nothing but a flawed bunch of noobs not able to ever even reach IJN experience levels, no matter what... I love it...

pilots can be trained at least but ships can't be trained and even if they gain exp up to around 50, then you are stuck without engaging the enemy that has a roughly 15-20 experience advantage all the time...

enemy carriers spotted again... the last couple of days we've spotted enemy destroyers or cruisers NE of Darwin heading South and I wasn't sure what this TF was up to, I didn't care much about it actually as there's nothing of value in the area and I expected the enemy TF to move to Rabaul while taking quite some risk if it passes through the area between my airfields at Townsville and Port Moresby as mortar has done before but the enemy TF was then reported heading North again... now today we spot enemy carriers so I think that was meant to be a trap with the DD TF being the bait to draw out my carriers which were supposed to run into KB then... nah, that would be a poor attempt as I've got no reason to send out my carriers to hunt some DD in hostile waters... we'll see, perhaps KB is moving South now... if so, I wouldn't be afraid about it as both PM and Townsville got heavy fighter cover and if KB comes close then it's bomber units will be depleted quite quickly and then we'll have a chance to strike back with our carriers which I would not hesitate to do...

Good to see you back in the fray Castor. This AAR makes me wince, looks like you're playing this poor guy like a banjo.

It reminds me of my own inadequacies. [:D]

I feel some solidarity regarding the dismal surface engagements, I've often compared Allied sailors to the Three Stooges. It's not speed, rubbish. I had Royal Navy cruisers fight Japanese SAGs in the Bay of Bengal, being a muppet I kept on sending them in - the Japanese can't be lucky every time, right? And the RN have no shortage of SAG firepower, right?

Wrong. If an Allied ship even opened fire, let alone hit something, that'd be a good result for the Allies. Most of the time it was just rabbit in headlights butchery.

Hi

absolutely agree on the nav engagements, three out of four times you are an idiot for using Allied ships against the allmighty IJN and I do blame the game mechanics for it. Using the IJN I wipe the floor with every Allied surface combat TF most of the time, so how comes? Again, just don't engage the IJN, no reason to do so as the odds are against you all the time no matter what. See, one IJN DD sinking two USN CA in a SC TF consisting of 3 USN CA and halve a dozen DD.

If we look at the strategic situation at the moment then I have to say with that what the enemy has taken so far he has already achieved all historical targets and has landed two divs plus other troops on Ceylon and we are only in early March. He took a lot of absolutely unnecessary losses, like losing that division at Sea that was parked a couple of days off Port Moresby while waiting for KB to show up and he also lost the equivalent of at least two divs of combat squads for being kicked out of Singapore and being forced to retreat North of Clark Field but that is about it. I think mortar has some shortcomings in how he processes his invasions and ground assaults but this doesn't hinder him from taking all historical targets and he only failed at PM with his invasion so far, mostly benefitting from the amphib bonus.

The high loss of aircraft won't really hurt him long term I guess, the unnecessary loss of shipping around PM for example is also something he won't really feel I guess. He was stalled at Port Moresby and I 100% doubt he will ever be able to take it (he won't even try I think) and there he will lose his 25.000 troops worth more than a div. He will take Ceylon and then it's about it for all IJ expansion. Doesn't mean a full effort assault on some island could not be succesful but more or less all the areas I want to defend actually got troops able to defend them now, the only place I was late was Ceylon, but again, this is something more related to the amphib bonus than anything else. Still, my fleet action at Ceylon, together with me sending three bgd to Port Blair as a stop gap for the Japanese was totally silly as I've got just more than enough experience that I should know better not to do that as the odds are so biased against the Allied that I shouldn't complain as I just know how the game works and I have to live with that.

At the moment we hold Clark Field and the enemy will need all the strenght he can mobilise to finally take that base, otherwise we will own Clark for another 12 months. Our Dutch troops have retreated to the mountain fortress of Malang, also here the enemy will need more than one or two divs to knock us out. While these are only two strongpoints left, the enemy has to either use a lot of troops to take them or has to keep one third to halve of the troops needed to take the place to act as prison guard. Both scenarios are fine with me as this means that the enemy will just not have enough strenght left to be a threat to anything lethal I want to defend. If the massacre at Port Blair and the following total defeat of the Royal Navy wouldn't have happened it would be a perfect game for me so far, but especially the RN defeat leaves a more than bitter taste.

Well, he's still advanced, but at significant cost in relatively scarce expeditionary LCUs. He's got to have a lot of them earmarked as well due to not reducing everything behind his lines yet, so further advances will be tough. Of course, Japan still has claws well into 1943, in 1941 it's hard to lose, but still. By August 42 at the latest he won't just be able to steamroller mostly empty Allied bases or largely ignore Allied air power.

Re. surface combat, the most effective use I found of it was either a single cruiser raiding, or a 4-5 DD flotilla. A single Allied cruiser is hard to spot with naval search and has more than enough firepower to annihilate any convoy it finds, plus it has search planes. I had some luck using old Omaha CLs on their own in areas where convoys are likely but air cover is very limited. 4 DDs also has enough firepower to wipe out a convoy, and has the merit of being very fast, relatively expendable, and extremely hard to hit with air attack. Especially torpedoes, its very hard to Netty a destroyer.

...of course meet an IJ SAG and you're toast, but better to be toast with a couple of raiders than have your battleships humiliated.

Post by castor troy »

yeah, basically he used up all his offensive power already, I think Ceylon will be his last real success (actually his first real success with the enemy beating us down). I think he lost something like 1000 combat squads so far, with another 500 or so being isolated at Port Moresby which only wait for more Allied units to arrive there to finally kill them. So there is not that much left to do any kind of offensive when you substract that he has to keep at least one div on Java and three or so in the Philipines. China is save too, I have been building up my positions and am nearly 100% prepped everywhere. Doesn't leave him with a lot of choices and like you say, when August comes around I should be in a position when the odds for a succesful IJ offensive is nearly nil. [:D] Got roughly 230 first line fighters in the pool (120 P-40E, 50 P-400, 30 P-39D, 30 P-38E) with 300 deployed on the front and enough to defend myself at places like Hawaii. What we need at the moment are bombers, I reserve most of them for anti shipping strikes at the moment, don't have to do any A2G attacks at the moment anyway.

As to my ships, plan is to use them mostly defensively from now on (well knowing the wish for action will make me do silly things) with some raids now and then. Pretty much the same what I was doing so far anyway, with Ceylon being the big exception but like I've said, the enemy reached an area which I don't want to give up for free. It turned out to be not only Ceylon for free, but Ceylon AND the Royal Navy for free.

at times it's really hard to watch what my enemy is doing... three days ago he failed miserably, ordering a deliberate attack right the next day, failing again... one day rest, next deliberate attack today... well, Colombo can be taken easily IMO against what defends it (three low exp Ind bgd) but the way the attacks are put forward it will be an overly hard task... with two failed deliberate attacks in three days, how can disruption look like within the assaulting units? Low enough to order another attack on the third day? Can't imagine... except the first day when we caused massive losses while not suffering a lot we are now suffering the same losses in combat squads as does the enemy... unfortunately we are not building up forts fast enough... damn it, if I would have had 10 days more time I would have an Australian Inf div sitting at Colombo and the enemy would get nowhere... would have been easily possible without the fantasy amphib bonus that makes the enemy land without preparation and losses anywhere and load faster the Allied do in major ports... what I have hoped my troops at Port Blair to achieve is now happening at Colombo, the enemy is worn down, looses offensive combat power and it will take time to recover... but Ceylon as a stop gap is quite expensive in the end... having another 100 combat squads disabled makes the situation critical now for us...

and the daily bombardment at Port Moresby... building up the base and doing those bombardments costs me no less than 1000 supplies each day! [X(] Brings up the question of how much supplies are consumed for each eng squad? Either the bombardment or the base construction cost more supplies than I've thought... not that it would matter later on as the Allied but currently Port Moresby isn't swimming in supplies and bringing in more is semi dangerous, nah, actually it isn't really dangerous so I'm going to send some 20.000 ton supply convoys to the base...

Post by Rainer79 »

Hi Chris!

I don't think that abolishing the amphib bonus is the holy grail you'll make it out to be since accomplishing even anything close to the historical conquest of the DEI without will be impossible I fear. Taking all these extra bases and dot hexes is pretty vital for Japan and I don't think you could achieve it without the current bonus. Limiting it to certain hex borders might be better than abolishing it completely.

Limiting it to certain hex borders might be better than abolishing it completely.

hey mate!

absolutely agree, I have no problem if the amphib bonus is used where it is "supposed" to be used. Problem is, the IJ usually lands with the amphib bonus 5000 miles away from the most outlying historical targets. And here starts the problem, why should a USMC division in 45 be 80-90% disabled from landing unprepared at an enemy base while the IJ divs can do whatever they want UNPREPARED during the amphib bonus phase?

Without this fantasy bonus the enemy would have failed at Horn Island (how many waves of unprepared troops came in? 5? 10?), without the fantasy bonus the enemy would not land unprepared at Port Blair and three weeks later with the same units on Ceylon, faster than I was able to bring in troops (even if only by a couple of days).

The amphib bonus as it is, is not about all the dot or empty bases in the SRA, it doesn't matter if you take those empty bases in 1/42 or 8/42, it's all about doing landings far outside the SRA or in a way that makes no sense at all (I have to admit I have never had an opponent putting his invasions forward in such a way as mortar does/did).

Like I've said earlier, either screw it completely, have it valid only inside the SRA (or for all those historical targets) or IMO the best solution, let the IJ troops accumulate 2 prep points per day in the first 6 months so they have to PLAN their invasions, prepare their troops and then go ahead. Not like it is now, don't plan much, send something, find out two nav guards are not enough, send two more, then a rgt and then another unprepared div to take a place like it has been in this PBEM more than once. No planning, rather poor landings but it all didn't matter because the IJ can bring in more totally unprepped units at will, unloading faster during those "opposed" landings than the Allied unload in their friendly bases.

We should not forget, with all the screw ups the enemy has done so far and with all the unusual losses the enemy took, he nevertheless took all the area in three months, the Japanese took in the first 12 months, so with all the screw up he moved 4 times faster than real life AND took Port Blair and is about to also take Ceylon. And the only reason I've seen making this possible was the amphib bonus, because I can't do much more than to destroy as many combat squads being the equivalent of three or four enemy divisions so far (with more than another div about to be destroyed at Port Moresby).

I was never really aware what an impact the amphib bonus really has, because I've never ended up in a comparable situation like this in a PBEM. Remembering our PBEM, amphib bonus or not, you have never put your invasions forward like mortar has been doing. I can't remember a single offensive of yours that was only relying on the amphib bonus, nor would I say your main benefit was that bonus. You came, you fougth, you took your targets, amphib bonus or not wasn't the deciding factor.

On the other side, in late 44 when I brought 2000 av, 100% prepared to take an island and failed, I had to wait another 3 months to have my reinforcements fully prepped to be able to land at the "hostile" base while I've already had 150.000 soldiers there. Compare this to the first four months and the amphib bonus. IMO it doesn't fit together.

What is now happening on Ceylon and what earlier happened to the Royal Navy around Ceylon is purely my fault, because I should not have sent those bgd to Port Blair when I know the enemy can use a couple of unprepared divs at will (remember, the first "invasion" of a single small IJN unit failed) and I should not have sent the Royal Navy in to fight the IJN as I know the odds so the disaster of losing the RN is my fault as well as the loss of the bgds at Port Blair and now the loss of more or less emtpy Ceylon. BUT, again, without the amphib bonus this would all not have been possible in that way. Why? Because it would have taken the enemy three months minimum more to be ready to go with two+ divs for Port Blair AND land those units on Ceylon three weeks later. By then, there would have been 500 av more at Colombo and the RN would not be sent in to die.

Even if my decisions were plain dumb (due to my knowledge on the game), they would have been "avoidable" and this is what makes me grumble. [;)]

Main problem with the amphibious bonus is that it works for opposed landings while the Japanese landing doctrine was to land at places where there was no opposition.

Kota Bharu was a surprise landing in the early hours of the war and as if I remember correctly, the only other opposed landing was at Milne Bay and a miserable failure.

However, the amphib bonus is neccessary for the AI (and for WITP/AE newbies).

yeah, I know it is there for the AI. It would be cool to have a toggle, like "amphib bonus yes/no" for PBEM. [:D]

It is also required to provide tension for the IJFB to speed their assault and to provide some drama [as if the fact the Allied new toys and the need for oil is not enough] ..[;)] then suddenly one day they forget how to invade! [:D]

Ok back to the war ..

when the IJA ground forces will finally show up at Soerabaja there will nothing be left of the heavily entrenched Dutch troops... daily IJAAF medium bomber attacks will have taken care of my static Dutch units (pity you can't abandon static devices and the whole units get destroyed)... the IJAAF is coming in at longe range from Makassar day after day, suffering literally no losses... considering the thousands of medium bomber sorties in the first couple of months, the enemy got an op loss rate around 0.1%... Flying nav search in a USN patrol aircraft is around 50 times more dangerous than the daily combat mission in a IJAAF bomber as I've lost 6 or 7 dozen Catalinas already... yes, setting 60 search 40 rest, below normal range, 6000ft... I find it yet again ridicoulos that nav search is the most dangerous mission on Earth in AE...

the Dutch receive Hurricanes and Warhawks now and I've thought I could use two squadrons to attack the daily bombing runs to Soerabaja... my fighters are at Malang (which the enemy has never attacked even though I've flown several bomber strikes out of it, lol) and are on LRCAP killing over a dozen bombers... expect the unescorted bomber strikes to stop or coming in with Zero or Oscar escorts/sweeps... can't say I expect a big strike against Malang as mortar hasn't done that so far while he could have wiped out all the Dutch airforce in one or two turns attacking Malang... one of those things I fail to understand... Colombo got some nice flak, a bad place for bombers... if we would have just had time to move in the planned reinforcements it would a perfect place to defend against an enemy siege... lots of supplies that would last a year or longer with no other place on the map except Pearl Harbour having a comparable flak defense... well, my couple of Ind bgd won't hold forever of course...

and here is KB popping up again... we have a supply convoy unloading at Port Moresby with 150 fighters on Cap there and then KB launches a strike at extended range... what really strikes me is why the hell is KB launching a nav strike against my ships when mortar just has to know there are loads of fighters at Port Moresby that have caused serious losses to his carrier aircraft before and why are those Vals attacking with only 2x60kg bombs? Doesn't that mean they would be set to using a drop tank? I have never seen Vals attacking with 2x60kg bombs only...

anyway, we get up more than 50% of our available fighters to defend the low value convoy (we do have enough supplies at Port Moresby that it would not be a tragedy to lose those three medium sized freighters that are 60% unloaded) and what follows is a pretty one sided affair in that our fighters get a long dive phase against the enemy escorts taking down one and a halve dozen Zeroes and nearly all Vals... 4 Kates on nav search were also reported shot down... [X(] Vals with drop tanks on nav attack and Kates on nav search? This is getting more and more amazing to me...

bringing KB close to PM to launch a nav strike is where the flaw starts IMO... no sense doing that... let alone the fact that is once again pure luck to run over halve a dozen of my subs with none of them even thinking about attacking...

oh come on mortar, what are you doing? [8|] Can he be serious? How can one do this, how can one be that careless? Even without yesterday's failed nav strike one would not attack PM if not 100% necessary but he did. Ok, he had to find out the hard way (again) that it was not a good idea yesterday. We kept happily unloading our small supply convoy and thought he would move away with KB again anyway... no, he didn't... and this time he sends in some Kates with a Zero escort and it is yet another turn when KB's strike is butchered... heck, this must be the fourth or fifth time already that KB has lost a hell a lot of Zeroes since the outbrake of the war for little or no gain... well, we have a 2900 ton freighter in sinking condition now, the ship was nearly empty... what a great result for KB, paying with two dozen aircraft of this strike being shot down for a whopping couple of USAAF fighters...

and that of course only was the morning strike, another one following in the afternoon, again meeting more than 90 of my fighters set to Cap... this time only a dozen Zeroes were on escort and halve of them are shot down, then our fighters turned onto the Kates shooting down all but one... [8|] I really can't believe this is happening, it's a PBEM after all... normally I would cheer about such a result, but in this PBEM I really start to wonder where this is leading to... you can screw up things and end up with a KB strike you didn't want to happen but mortar has lost already something like 200 KB aircraft over Port Moresby alone as this is not the first "operation" that goes that way...

I really just can't believe it... he lost roughly a hundred aircraft over Port Moresby the last two turns for a torp hit on a xAK and a dozen of my fighters shot down... sorry, but this is what the AI is doing but a PBEM player? [:(] total air losses now show over 400 Zeroes shot down already, we are only in mid March, means more than 130 Zeroes shot down every month since outbreak of hostilities! [X(] I think alltogether we have lost only a little over 150 fighters of all types (including ground losses of the first day and all the obsolete Dutch)... the 400 Zeroes lost may surely be an exageration but that would still mean more than 300 of them lost in three months... well, not really surprising with operations like this one... just don't know what mortar is doing, this pretty much takes away the joy of such "victories"...

just look at the total air to air losses of Zeroes, P-40 and P-39, I think this says it all...

well, tried a deliberate attack with most of those units at Port Moresby and have to pay for it of course... the ground combat as flawed as it is caused one of my small units to be completely destroyed, only some motorized support left... the enemy suffered a whopping ONE squad destroyed... fun... but hey, didn't I say I have to wait for combat worthy divisional sized units to attack here... once more, I know how it works and don't listen to my own advise... wow, silly I am...
