Have just discovered a detailed 21. PzDiv strength report for the 29.12.41 which indicates that the MG-Bataillon 8 was authorized 10 SPW (Sd.Kfz. 251) - 3 on hand and 7 missing. That puts paid to my theory, and supports Lannes' first post. And another peice of the giant puzzle has been found.
The numbers:
first number: on hand, (in brackets: authorized)
251/6 x 0(1) : Hqs, 21st Panzer Division
251/6 x 0(1) : 200. Armored Signal Battalion
251/6 x 0(1) : 200. Armored Engineer Battalion
251/7 x 0(6) : 200. Armored Engineer Battalion
251/1 x 3(10): 8. MG Battalion
But, this is 8/9 months after arrival. No idea of the average life expectancy of an armored halftrack in North Africa ... Maybe the 250's were replaced by 251's somewhere along the line?
