Re: Bottlenecks occur in surprising places
Letting you know I haven't forgotten this question. The short answer is no. The plan did not include having 1CVL, 2CS, 1 battleship, 1 heavy cruiser and over 10 destroyers sunk before 1942... ouch that is nasty to see it listed. Early days on the production curve and I'm about to pass the 100 000 HI stored in the pool but, yes, very early days.zebrazwo wrote: Sun Apr 19, 2026 10:36 am Are things going according to plan? Do you feel like you are ahead or behind the curve?
On the other hand the Sir Robin in Malaya has got me far closer to Singers, at this time of the war, than I have previously experienced.
I hope to do a better write up than this over the next week.

I don't think there is going to be much of a slow down in either torpedo or mine activity. The pace feels frantic and we are only 3 weeks in!PaxMondo wrote: Wed Apr 22, 2026 3:13 pm Still a lotta torp activity on both sides. I must report on the encounter between SS Seal and xAK Kyusyu Maru at Davao this turn. Kyusyu Maru has for several days been earnestly unloading much needed supplies at Davao. Today she suffered the misfortune of being singled out for some rough treatment by said Seal. The ASW escort had been sent off to cover the straits leading into Davao leaving 3 merchantmen in the harbour to go about their business in as quick a manner as possible. Seal slipped past the guard and found herself a tempting target.
In the morning pulse Seal went for the traditional submerged attack with 2 torpedoes. 1 dud and 1 miss. Unfortunate, but not to be deterred Middleton J. elected to attack on the surface during the afternoon pulse. 7 torpedoes hit Kyusyu Maru during this frenzy of torpedo firing and every single one of them was a dud! For good measure another torpedo went astray and missed the somewhat very stationary target. So, all together 10 torpedoes expended for a stunning result of 8 duds and 2 misses.
Whilst this was going on the Americans were getting in as much gunnery practice as possible and as the reports indicate – 31 shell hits onboard Kyusyu Maru. I’d given up on this ship being a survivor but come the end of the day there she was still above the water although no longer concentrating on delivering supplies but fighting fires. Her damage stats are 20 17(02) 03 28. 28 fires do not sound too bad so I can live in hope that the crew does the right thing and douses every single flame. The surprise result was the daytime experience level of the crew. From an ordinary 21 to a most respectable 55 for a Japanese merchant ship. I just had to do a rewatch and noted that most (but certainly not all) of the shell hits were Browning M2 MG rounds so a bit of luck went with me this time.
A ship to watch perhaps as she has already felt the sting of the Americans. On 22 December ’41 she was one of the recipients of a bomb from the Kingfishers and Seagulls which had so brazenly carried out a sea level attack on the invasion fleet at Davao. I wonder if I can get this super merchant teamed up with the super escort Ch-6.

I hate these notices and what it implies about IJ intel ... or lack thereof ....

... The surprise result was the daytime experience level of the crew. From an ordinary 21 to a most respectable 55 for a Japanese merchant ship. I just had to do a rewatch and noted that most (but certainly not all) of the shell hits were Browning M2 MG rounds so a bit of luck went with me this time..
Wow!! Never seen this before ... WOW!!!

Sake or whiskey for the crew! As much as they can drink

In one game against the AI, a xAK was hit by one burst from a M2 from a PT Boat early in the war. That Japanese ship sank from that one hit.

AVP Pollux is reported to have been sunk near Lingga on Dec 29, 1941
xAP Legaspi is reported to have been sunk near Pangutaran Island on Dec 29, 1941
The destruction of xAP Legaspi was a result I had been planning on for the last couple of turns. A couple of days prior I had ordered a SAG with the 4 old Aoba class cruisers + 1 light cruiser and 2 destroyers to head out from Cam Rhan Bay with the intention of covering the beginning of the DEI campaign south of the Philippines. At the same time recon picked up what was reported as a lone ship heading north on the eastern side of Borneo.
I’d worked out the probable area where an intercept might take place, and it worked… stormy weather notwithstanding. The range had come down considerably before a sighting was made. It seems that Legaspi was possibly doing exactly what the ship had been tasked with during the actual war. This time the IJN caught up with her a month or so earlier.
Tomorrow this SAG will break up with the intention of locating and destroying as many reported enemy vessels as possible. We have several sighting reports, and I am confident that they will be unescorted merchant ships attempting to pick up supplies/troops amongst the myriad Philippine islands.
