Back to the War

Post by Mark VII »

For some reason I failed to save the combat reports for the 6/8-6/9/42 and the 6/10-6/11/42 turns. And because of the recent 1.8 patch upgrade I did not want to rerun the combat to get the reports.

During these four days final preparations were being made for TigerWalk, the landing on Diamond Harbor(Ed knows). KB returned to Rangoon for refueling and rearming the carriers. Same with the Yamato bombardment TF which was immedeatly sent along with another BB bombardment TF to hit Chandpur. The Chandpur raid had two missions, one was to destroy as many a/c as possible as air recon was telling me there was over 100 fighters there and the second reason was to give Ed the idea that Chandpur was the possible landing spot. The bombardments only yielded 7xMohawkIV's and 15xHurricaneII's destroyed which was alittle disappointing buy there was over 200 runway hits and 29 Airbase hits so Chandpur in closed.

My Akyab based Sally's and Helen's hit Dacca but found no enemy aircraft to destroy. Transports are being loaded and shove off for their objective.

First Attack on Hengchow with 6 1/2 Divisions plus supporting arms. Attack fails but fort reduced 2 levels. We will rest several days and attack again while IJAAF hits the airfield to keep their engineers busy.

On June 10th, the American 11th BG flying LB-30's begins bombing Canton Island with one raid a day. Wonder what they want?

First combat with patch 1.8 installed!

Preps and movement for TigerWalk continues. Follow up air raids on Chandpur to keep the airfield non operational and to maybe catch some Allied fighters stuck on the tarmac.

This is the date of the massive sub recon-by-suicide that Ed talked about in the forum. Via submarines, he landed elements to the 2nd USMC Raider Btn and the 153rd RCT on Makin, Mili, Majuro, Tarawa, Canton Island and Baker Island. Not sure if I would of wasted the highly trained Marine Raider's on this exercise but if you want something done right, send in the Marines! On four of the islands Ed saw what I have defending so I guess the American bandits did their jobs but paid the ultimate price. Being worthless pieces of coral, Mili and Majuro were undefended so the bandits temporarily captured these two atolls. This recon-by-suicide does give me the idea that something larger could be coming but my Emily's are seeing nothing in the area?

Final sea movement for TigerWalk. About 6 TF's are hovering 120 miles from Chandpur(240 miles from Diamond Harbor) waiting for the BB bombardment TF's to get rearmed and catch up. The transports are accompanied by CVE Taiyo loaded with Shoho's Zero Daitai flying CAP along with some LR-CAP from Akyab. KB is 120 miles farther to the East in a blocking position should any Allied ships try to get in the way from the Ceylon area. KB is also throwing up alot a CAP with the hope of drawing any RAF attack a/c in the area but no RAF is seen except on the ground in Southern India. Sally's from Mandalay keep Chandur suppressed while Sally's and Helen's from Akyab try to finish off any surface ships at Diamond Harbor plus reduce the port defences. Another 11xMohawkIV's and 17xHurricaneII are shown destroyed on the ground. Recon is showing only three ground units at Diamond Harbor while I see seven Allied ground units at Chandpur. Is the deception working or are two of those Diamond Harbor units Divisions?

With patch 1.8, ASW attacks is way up, there must of been 7 encounters in the Bay of Bengal but I show you only the two that got hits.

6/16-6/17/42 Surprise at Canton

Post by Mark VII »

Very busy two days! First the TigerWalk Diamond Harbor landings begin and out of nowhere, an American invasion force starts landing operations on Canton Island! First India.

TigerWalk begins with two Battleship bombardments mainly trying to suppress the port defences in advance to the troop landings. 13 guns were lost, hope they were CD guns? In support of the landings, KB sends some of its Kate's on port attack also trying to reduce resistance. Akyab's bombers go after the ground units and Mandalay's bombers are looking for the RAF on the ground at Dacca.

Each invasion TF has a CA or CL's attached to help with counter battery fire. I think the landings go well(included the action reports of each TF) and after the first day and a half of TigerWalk, at least 85737 troops, 888 guns, and 205 vehicles are landed. The landing force consists of the 18th,21st and 48th Divisions. 'B' and 'C' Brigades of the Imperial Guard Division. The 6th, 2nd and 7th Tank Rgt's. the 4th Eng and two versions of the 23 Eng Rgt's. The 18th HFA, 14th Morter Btn and the 3rd Mtn Gun Rgt. And finally the 14th, 15th and 25th Army HQ's. There is "more" on the way!

The ineffectual British bombardments reveal that only the 2nd UK Division 'A' Brigade along with the Diamond Harbor BF and the Bengal Eng Rgt is defending. The air landing on Jamshedpur by the 3rd Yokosuka SNLF Paras meets zero resistance and the airfield is captured intact. TigerWalk has started according to plan...BANZAI!!!

Now on to the Southcentral Pacific!

Somehow, a slow troop-carrying invasion TF and a slow Battleship bombardment TF managed to sneak to Canton Island without being sighted till the 14 inch guns of the BB's opened fire. I really wonder if my Emily's in the area are flying naval search as they are ordered to do? I should of had some warning!

Even though I half expected this to be the first target of Ed's counter-offensive, I didn't see anything coming and had just flew in the F1/Tainan Daitai to try to get some LB-30s during their daily raids. Well, the USN bombardment just blasts the airfield and 15 Zero's are destroyed on the ground and the airfield closed. Sh?tfire!!!

The 2nd Marine Division and the 24th USA Division supported by the 34th Eng Rgt and the 102 USN BF land on the 17th. The good news is that Canton Island's valient defenders inflict heavy losses on the invaders and hold(for now)! Imagine this, only the Maizuru 2nd SNLF, the 52nd Naval Guard Unit and the 6th Base Force are holding off two of the Americans best infantry Divisions!

So far no sight of the American Carriers or carrier based aircraft types. He should have at least four of them! Are they nearby in support of this major operation, one would think so? Are my Emily's flying??????

Diamond Harbor Falls 6/18-6/19/42

Post by Mark VII »

Diamond Harbor is captured on the first attack and the defeated defenders retreat to Calcutta across the water barrier. The airfield is intact but the port has some damage. Naval forces participating in the invasion have suffered only minor damage considering the over 250 ships that took part. Four AP's took medium to heavy damage with only one in danger of sinking and four PC/PG's took serious damage with none in immediate danger of going down. Time to start moving inland. Elements of the 2nd Yokosuka SNLF Paras jump and seize a undefended Asansol airfield. It would seem that the Calcutta, Dacca, Chandpur triangle is now isolated from the rest of India. Can I move fast enough?

The American Canton Island Op continues but it seems that the first day landing was a little much for the invading forces as they only bombard my defenders these two days. I decide to test the new 1.8 ASW/Sub routines and send a RO sub into the vicinity of Canton Island to see what happens. Still no sight of any USN Carriers and not counting the TF's seen in the Canton Island hex, there are no sightings in the open water around Canton Island. Are my Emily's flying?

Canton I. retaken 6/20-6/21/42

Post by Mark VII »

TigerWalk is in sort of a lull as the ground units rest to recover squads and fatigue. Some units are moving while the bulk is resting. Reinforcements continue to arrive via sea and air. Still not seeing the RAF in Southern India? Do the Brits even have an effective airforce or are they saving up for some emergency?

Canton Island is taken by the Marines after 5 days of fierce fighting. The Maizuru 2nd SNLF, the 52nd Naval Guard Unit and the 6th Base Force are still holding out in the SW corner of the Atoll and have done the Emperor proud. During the struggle the defenders disabled or destroyed some 6208 infantry and 68 guns. I would hope that the 2nd Marine Division and the 24th Division will be unavailable for further offensive operations for a couple of weeks. The Americans still need to destroy my dug in defenders so there are still oportunities to kill more Marines. The minefield did get hits on two AK's and a destroyer so I am somewhat happy. The CD guns from the 6th BaseForce did get some hits on some DD's and transports so I hope a couple are hurting alittle.

Hengchow is captured so now the railway is clear of the Chinese hordes so my troops can move freely between Canton and Yenen. There are still some Chinese Corps trapped behind my lines so need to decide if I should destroy them(for the points) or move on elsewhere and just let them die with out supply?

In India, Japanese Air continues to suppress RAF airbases. No RAF seen in the air, have the pilots all run away in the face of the victorious Zero's? Recon reported the 18th UK"B" Division 60 miles from Calcutta, KB's divebombers are ordered to interdict the attempt to reinforce the pressed city. On the same day, KB's Kates go after Calcutta's Airfields.

The American battleship deathstar hits Baker Island while I still have troops making things hot for the Marines on Canton Island. I think the USN would be better served to continue to support their Marines on Canton.

Research

Post by Mark VII »

A sneak look at one of my wonder weapons being built at one of the many Kawasaki factories working on the first orders. I'm sure the evil American spies will sooner or later find out its name but we will give them their first clue, it is the Ki-61 Hien.

Look, just like the Americans, we have mass producing manufactoring lines as well. Banzai!!!

Here is the new wonder weapon in the air during flight testing. The sooner that Allied pilots learn this outline the sooner they can try to run away. But wait, since the Hien has a speed of 350mph, most Allied fighters will not be able to run away. Best just bail out as soon as you see it! Research, research and more research.

The resistance of the Canton Island defenders has been so intense, the invading yankee pirates can only bombard with artillery these two days. Their infantry must be wasted and dragging their tongues! The American Battleship deathstar returns and adds to the carnage.

India sees only airfield suppression attacks with more reinforcements being landed. My initial 3 divisions have rested and are moving onto Calcutta to begin the seige.

I guess beating up on the three weakest teams in the West, Columbus, Chicago and StLouis 19-5(I think) didn't help when going against one of the hottest teams at the end of the season. The Redwings sorta had the same problem? I was at game one in Nashville and witnessed our only victory! Really thought we had a chance after that but SanJose really stepped up and used their larger size to full advantage and keeped us pinned to the boards. I was rooting for the Sharks in their next series but now I'm just waiting for the finals to see who I like.

A plan is developing in which IJA forces will seize Dacca via a combination para and Tank attack. Air recon is showing only one unit defending and seven units at Chandpur. The 2nd and 6th Tank Rgt's are heading cross country to Asansol to get to their jumping off points. The recently dropped 2nd and 3rd Yokosuka Para's are planning and resting for the operation. Not this turn, but I keep attacking Chandpur from the sea and air to keep Ed thinking I may be landing there soon. Hope that he does not reinforce Dacca while my troops get into theikr jumpoff locations. Still no sight of the RAF in lower India so I sense there is air activity at the level 2 airfield at Yanam. KB is sent into range to attack the airfield with its Vals and the Kates are held in reserve in case of any RN naval activity. This turns out to be a minor mistake as not enough RAF a/c are destroyed and to Vals are lost to flak.

The end is near at Canton Island as I notice that the IJN 6th Base Force has disappeared from the Island. The American Battleship deathstar strikes again at my valient defenders and they manage another hit on a rampaging CA. The yankee Marines continue to play it safe and only bombard with their artillery at long range. They seem gun shy and afraid to face the Japanese soldier at close range after the beating the Marines took getting ashore!

Three divisions plus supporting arms are now rested and on Calcutta. We bombard these next two days to size up the defenses. Calcutta is not as strong as suspected as only the 2nd UK "A" Division, the 18th UK"B" Division, 2 BF's, an aviation unit and an engineer unit are defending. The 7th Tank Rgt rolls into a undefended Benares as the IJA probes to the north looking for any British resistance. On to Lucknow as air recon is showing only one unit, probably a BF! Air and naval suppresion continue as we prepare to free the local Indian population from the yoke of British imperialism.

With 1.8 starting to get some action in the submarine war. In addition to the three attacks shown that got hits there were another three encounters where nothing happened. Subs were spotted, I sent ASW groups to deal with them, some results happened, I'm happy! Still thinking there is some RAF at Yanam, some CA's are sent to bombard, good results are reported!

Message received at Combined Fleet HQ at 2305 6/30/42:
Radio and codes to be destroyed after this message stop....eternal damnation to those American Marines stop....may our comrades in arms please avenge us stop....May the Emperor live ten thousand years stop...signed Sgt Yudachi; 52nd Naval Guard Unit stop.

Nothing has been heard from the defenders of Canton Island since that message! With nothing more than the Maizuru 2nd SNLF, the 52nd Naval Guard Unit and the 6th Base Force, the Japanese hold off the Americans best two divisions for 14 days. Its going to be a long road to Tokyo!

The Dacca Op is ready to jump off in two days. The Imperial Guards"B" Division and the 33rd"B" Division are only a couple of miles from Asansol from where they will race to Dacca to help secure the city from British counterattack from Chandpur. The 131st IJNAF Base Force is also in Asansol ready to provide some aviation support once Dacca is taken. The 2nd and 6th Tank Rgt's are just South of Asansol 120 miles from Dacca well rested ready to rush in to assist the airborne boys.

The first all out attack on Calcutta will also jump off on two days. Most of my Helen's and Sally's are resting this turn for a all out effort on the 4th.

The American Battleship Deathstar returns to Baker Island, wonder when the invasion will start?

Calcutta & Dacca Assaulted

Post by Mark VII »

The big day has arrived. Two Combat Engineer Rgt's lead the 18th, 21st and 48th Divisions with Arty support from two FA Rgt's and a Mortar Btn while the 14th, 15th and 25th Army HQ's offer logistic support. Defending is only a Brigade from each of the 2nd and 18th UK Divisions plus some BF's. The weather is not good in Burma so all of the anticipated air support does not arrive. I really don't think the light air support made the difference. The attack bogs down but the engineers make progress and reduce the British fortifications somewhat. We will be back!

The air assault on Dacca also kicks off with the Yokosuka 3rd SNLF Para jumping onto the airfield while elements of the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF Para land in and around a large park near downtown Dacca in an effort to seize the local government. The gallent Para's know that two Tank Rgt's are on the way but it is not enough as the 5th Indian Base Force holds during the first attack on the 4th. Eventhough more Para's landed on the 5th(check enclosed portion of the operations report) no assault takes place(on second thought maybe the air transport was only carrying supply???). The morning of the 6th finds both SNLF's at about 60% strength with both the 2nd and 6th Tank Rgt's there with them. Even better news is that a Brigade from both the Imperial Guards Division and the 33rd Division are only 15 miles out side of town. The attack will resume at first light on the 6th!

Dacca Captured 7/6-7/7/42

Post by Mark VII »

Dacca falls to the combined air and ground assault.  Hopefully the arrival of  a Brigade from both the Imperial Guards Division and the 33rd Division will be enough to secure the city should the Brits attempt to counterattack out of Chandpur.

The Commonwealth troops in Chandpur now have their backs to the ocean where large Battleships often appear shelling the crap out of the docks and airfields.  Calcutta is also cut off from the rest of India and prep work continues for the next major assault as the 38th Division moves into position to join the renewed assault on the next day .

Eventhough the air support from Burma was grounded by weather, the aircraft based at Diamond Harbor gets through and makes a difference during the assault on Calcutta.  But  the main difference is the addition of the 38th Division and a Combat Engineer Rgt to the 21st, 48th and 18th Divisions.  The defenders retreat across the River and end up in the hex between Calcutta and Chandpur.  The Airfield is captured intact with lots and lots of supply but the Industry and Resources in the hex are somewhat damaged.

I would hope that the over-the-river retreat cost these units many more disruptions than a normal retreat over open land.  Now I need to effort to get ground units onto both the retreated units hex and Chandpur to prevent the ex-Calcutta garrison from reaching Chandpur and thus gaining what ever fortifications the Brits have dug.  The  ex-Calcutta garrison will be much easier to destroy in that clear hex!

Chandpur and the ex-Calcutta Garrison continue to be pounded from the Air and Sea in preparation for their destruction.  My ground units are resting for a couple of days before moving to pin the Allied units.  Moving into both Chandpur and the ex-Calcutta Garrison hex will require shock attacks since we will be crossing rivers so I need to make sure everything is in order!

In case you are wondering, the Hyuga and Ise are based out of  the level 9 port Diamond Harbor where I have landed well over 1,000,000 supply.  This was the plan, take Diamond and then blast Chandpur often till taken so we would of brought plenty of those 14 inch high-explosive rounds for said use.

The 7th Tank Rgt is probing near Lucknow so RAF fighters are attempting to interdict.  A view turns ago there was only on unit defending Lucknow(assumed to be a BF) but now there are  two units.  For the 12th, I have ordered a air-ground attack in an effort to find out the identity of the new ground unit which I am assuming to be a combat unit.
