LOL .. wont make any differance to my buffalos .. they die at a prodigious rate regardless. MUST upgrade them ASAP .. tempted to keep the experienced ones back till may for the brits and july for the dutch.
anyway i would prefer to keep this thread an AAR rather than a chat room [;)][;)]

RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
Nik is just plain useless....he even loses against the AI. My men are confident that once Manila and Sing are taken the rest will fall like a 'house of cards'
Rob - PI look shaky my friend. I still think the best defence is to focus ALL PHIL forces at one place (Manila being good due to urban bonus BUT bad due to a lack of resource production)

Unfortunately Clarke was clobbered today ..down to fort level 0 . I dont think i can even evacuate before i am forced to retreat and lose a LOT more men.
the PI defence was an experiment and if he follows up on bataan i am forced to remain split up.. not a good situation at all.
The original plan was to defend the triagle to force river crossings untill manilla fell. worked well too. the main error was my persuit into san marc and failing to dislodge the japanese there several weeks ago. It was risky and i knew it.
anyway it has been a lot more interesting than just camping in manilla.

I should be pleased really but its a ridiculous result .. i am guessing most damage was done to the torp loaded a/c as the following days attack was not as bad

Very odd .. i watched the animation and all a/c bombed and didnt launch torps .. is the game firing at a/c at 200ft when they should be at 17k altitude ??
Final results was 30 ! dead elite betties and apparently the groups are destroyed morale wise.
Nik .. this is way too effective .. i'll have to post later on what i had exactly in soerbaja as i needed to send the turn back .. no screen images available either.

Downgrade the Hudsons from Signapore, they should have experience close to 70 about now. They are RAAF bombers anyways (despite the SEAC HQ attached to them) so it will be nice to bring the boys closer to home [:)] I believe you should have about 2 groups of 16 giving you 32 experienced TB. Along with the 8 Tiva's in Lautern..thats 40 TB with decent experience. That should make his KB nervous. You might need some better fighters than Buffalos for escorts. Zero's will swat them out of the sky pretty quickly, leaving your TB's to be massacred. I would move in a flight of P40E with at least 65 exp. They'll still get pretty much killed, but at least they'll hold off the zero's long enough for you to get some shots off with your TB's. Lastly, if you really want to make your fortress Timor, your gonna have to move in some SBD's from somewhere to the area. Torps and 1000lb bombs really will create a headache for Miller. I would suggest take a flight or two off one of you carriers down near auckland and transfer them in from sydney. You might as well use all those SBD replacements you have piling up. Of course all this air power might need some more BF, so you might need to move some forces around.
In regards to moving BB's to the area, i would advise against it, the Brit BB's are just too slow to do anything. Plus showing force down at Timor is just gonna invite a strong invasion with KB. You want to avoid that. You want him to think he can take the area with a moderate force (like mini-KB). Better to spring your trap that way. In terms of surface force's, I would make a fast cruiser force instead and base it in NW-australia. That way you can do quick hit and run raids.
Anyways, good luck with everything. I enjoy your AAR alot.
some very good ideas there KD .. yes the aussie hudsons are a good idea. i swopped out a lot of the small 8 plane groups in n australia to beauforts iirc 4 units at high 60's exp. I have just railed up 72 new P40's and 72 new P39's to N australia. also the hurricanes fly 4/5 with this mod so are great escorts for Torp bombers.
The BB's would get to timor hidden .. i.e along the map edge .. then dash in to port .. If as you say they are useless. then i might as well be creative with them.. frees up better ships to stay in derby in relative safety. Yes i may split off the CLAA's and a couple of DD's to Batavia as a decoy group at least.
Getting SBD will be tough as i dislike unloading carrier a/c (seems a bit gamey imo) and i doubt that Ken would do such a thing anyway, he seems a very honorable man so far. Having the US CV's in Perth ( in reserve ) all 5 of em ! .. with the brit CV too should be well hidden from view. afaik he has no idea where my CV's are .. last seen near pago a month ago.
Thank you for your comments.. much appreciated
Rob
I had some luck ambushing Simon in the Java Sea with CVs but I used US + Brit carriers to do it, while KB was off in the Pacific. It put back his invasion plans 2 months though, I trace my general good showing back to that ambush. [:D]
I put the three Brit Royal Sovereign's at Koepang in my game, they raided a Jap force at Balikpapan which strayed beyond air cover very effectively. If you manage to get them in the right place at the right time they really do kick a lot of ass, but getting them there is not easy.
Still, they were useful in the theatre around June time, because they were skulking in Koepang harbour, a powerful force which required KB's attention. And the 250 fighters I had amassed there by then ruined KBs day. [:D] He got the Rs but I wreckes his pilots.
RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
Thx Rob.....let me know the loadout when you can. Flak was reduced for 4.5 Its still a bit on the high side for Japan but appears (so far) well tuned for the Allied side. 4.5 will also (as mentioned) also feature a major reduction for AA power in the SRA.
Funny in a way. 30 lost G4M's might be argued as good or bad given all the past debates on port attacks with torpedoes. I also factor in write offs to damage when viewing Air to Air or AA losses....they should not be treated litterally as "only right over the target". (remember too that op losses are greatly underrepresented in the game to preserve pilot lives)
Still...would like to know the flak count (including ships)

Thanks for the reply EUBanana.. only regulated straight ones allowed to post here ! the bent wild variety arent welcome [;)][;)].. same with cucumbers too !
I don't like having assets i cant use ( ie the R class) and the availability of bases on Timor allows fighters at both lautern and koepang
Havnt forgotten what you said to em a few months back about your smashing of the japanese invasions in the DEI with creative carrier use. Given the date, to be effective i need to combine the RN and USN ( and know where KB is too). He is dead quiet in the pacific right now, just mopping up round rabaul.
OK Nik .. yes i guess it could be viewed both ways, just was a bit of a shock really. from memory no combat ships in port. and 2 dutch regiments + 1 DAF av unit and 1-2 dutch base forces. not much really. OH and the CD unit. I'll get a proper gun count next turn. Not had one today as yet, i think friday is bowling day [:D]
can we upgrade mid game to the latest version as i think we are still on the .4 flavoured one

can we upgrade mid game to the latest version as i think we are still on the .4 flavoured one![]()
I was going to suggest that maybe you and your partner might want to upgrade to the next version even though your into march42. Another option would be my 42A version of the mod as well. Starts in 5/1/42....Japan has finished all the tedious SRA ops and has invested but not captured all of NG. Japan still has all her resources to use.
The version is not finished yet....so it's truely a 'beta'. but it does have the flak reduction and corrects a serious OOB error inherited from the stock OOB in regards the 4.7in DP as well as the SRA reduction (Grand campaign version). Also features a tweaked Zero (nerfed in 4.0). Still testing the latter. Also planning on cleaning up the UK carrier loadouts
Speedy and I are solderiing on with our 4.0 game though I will probably banzai Singapore for him to speed things up. He's willing to live with the increased Flak vs. 4.5 given that it'll only help him as Japan for my future blasting of his bases [:D]
A new 4.5 beta with Bombur was recently started 42A. Be interesting to see what he can do as Japan.
You'll want to use the WitP public beta with it though....ASW changes removed for the time being.

I really don't want to start a new game , the whole point of my game so far has been to delay/deny .. starting a new 1/5 game is daft and neither will accept it .. looks like i am facing japanese uber flak later on then [:D].. make a change [;)]
Anyway the war progresses .. mostly with a ton of landings and ground combat in the PI and singapore.

Quite understand. Hope the war goes well for you admiral. me....I just got Midway'd......its July 42....KB is smashed and my offensives in the Pacific as Japanese are now over......that'll teach me for being brash. [:D]

He seems to be moving in the South Pacific... Do you Rob intend to fight around Noumea? ...or are you again doing a stand in Port Moresby? (Like you did againts your previous opponent)

RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
I am not sure about the SW pacific yet to be honest. I will try and hold Noumea but i have almost nothing there ! the americal div will arrive pretty soon mind you. PM will be a wait and see strategy (i.e i havn't a clue) .. dont want to commit too little too early and lose it .. and i have prioritised Timor this game .. so the early aussie SW pac brigade went there instead.
Additionally i made a decision to get australia up and running early too. mainly in aviation support which is woefully short ( sending more via ship from brisbane to Darwin (finger crossed) )Brisbane is now 270 AV support and so will townville in a matter of days. this allows the smaller 30 size units to congregate in cooktown to build up early to a size 5 . and cairns to a size 8.
Many odds and sods air units shipping here too mitchells/havocs etc. Mostly to boost N australia and Timor. I have plans to evacuate the AV support from java when no longer needed from the west coast bases Tjiljap and the one near soerbaja. they seem to attract a lot less bomer attention. this will boost derby to 250+ and hopefully timor to 200. 1/2 of ABDA HQ is now in Derby too. I have sent 3 CL and 4 DD back to Timor as a forward screen . Force Z in Derby .. CVL hermes in Tjiljap and 2 CLAA + 3DD in batavia. Various ak's in dull ports so they look full [;)] .
although i suspect a lot less port attacks after the last few days [;)]
anyway .. on with the turn .. quiet couple of days really ..

RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
for Nik .. the AA guns in soerbaja for the raid. i have replacements off but very few are damaged anyway.
12.7 mm MG 36
3in/20cwt 15
3.7 inch 3
40mm bofors 18
88mm AA gun 14 ( are these like the jerry ones ? )
shipping was negligible .. 2 PG 3 AK .. so a few extra mg's
actually more than i thought .. if he had been low level bombing the results would have been ok . but at 17k feet a bit too extreme. I am almost convinced the AA fired at 200 ft instead of 17k.. is the code capable of doing this, given the erroneous torp attack text.

Hi Rob,
Seems to me like the results are not too bad considering the level of AA you had there. Maybe most of the losses were the torp carrying aircraft? At such low level and with that level of AA a fair few paper planes could have been downed.............

OH i agree if they had actually dropped torps .. i missed the first reply but the second was all bombing even though the report says " torps dropped at 200ft" .. all hits were bombs.
very confusing and not really niks problem if the program gets confused over altitude .. but we are beta testers ( so it seems )[;)][;)]

RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
Judging by the combat report, i'd say the culprit was the torpedo attacks. 200-2000 feet level would be dangerous, esp for the bulky unarmored twin Betties. I think you are referring to the 80mm AA gun, not the 88mm.
I'm getting plausible results so far in my 42A AI test using the 4.5 reduced values but as with the game with Speedy, i'm careful to access situations knowing the changed aspect of the game. I won't port attack a well defended port with torp carrying aircraft for the reason seen in your AAR.....i did recently successfully pummel Port Morosby using a high alt Torp bomber attack on airfield. (no dive bombers due to the 2000 feet hard coded attack routine for them) It does make it very hard to quickly and/or completely shut down a base which I think ultimately is a good thing.
Care when stacking LCU's remains an issue though, which was why i put it in the FAQ. As with anything else one can 'game' the system.

I never knew you could change the stacking, i just leave it as is and trust to luck .. seems fair to me [:D]
Problem is nik these guys didnt torpedo attack. so imo flak at 17k feet given the guns was a bit too tough .. anyway its over with now and we both learnt lessons on port strikes [;)]
I wrote down 88mm .. i'll check, may well hav seen the number and assumed 88mm instead ( kind of sticks in the mind that calaibre gun[:D][:D])
Thnaks for the replies everyone .. time to catch up of speedster vs niks thread

RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
there may have been a glitch which is one reason i never set Port attack as a secondary mission but the combat report shows G4M's dropping torps. Now given the fact that ships were reported hit by "bombs" does not necessarily mean that the code "treated" them flak wise as if they were at 17,000 feet. My guess is it treated them as at 200 feet which would explain the heavy loss/write off for the bombers. It would also account for why the report says dropping torps at 200 feet.
I've never lost 30 Jap bombers at 17,000 feet even to 50 HAA guns

RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
Thats exactly my point .. is that possibly due to it being a secondary target ?
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit
RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2
I suspect it to be. I havn't run into the issue when i set port attack as the primary objective. Another reason I do this is that i noted that when airgroups are set to Naval attack with either airfield or port as secondary....*torpedo aircraft will often attack naval targets with ***bombs**** instead of torps.* This is true even if they are attacking at normal range (vs. extended) and the base has adequate supply.
The only difference flak wise is that the code does ack ack them at the proper height when they are dropping the bombs.
