-Another bombardment run failed to inflict damage on enemy instalations and still resulted in a Japanese DD heavily damaged. Iwo Jima is crawling with enemy subs, one of them sunk as result of a Japanese mine and another was hit by carrier based planes. A third was hit by a depth charge dropped by a DD after she attempted to attack Ryujo. In Namlea, the Japanese LBA finally was able to launch a credible attack against the enemy invasion fleet.

-The IJN mines in Iwo Jima are still inflicting heavy losses to enemy ships. More two APD´s hit mines. Frustrated with the inability to shut down Iwo Jima by naval bombardment, the Japanese Navy is using her Betties in air attacks against the base. The first of these mission achieved some success, as two enemy bombers were destroyed in the ground. In the new Namlea airport, Hurricanes shot down 5 Zeroes and one Ki-48 in a IJN/IJA raid. Seven Hurricanes were lost.

After the disaster....

Post by Bombur »

-For some strange reason, the enemy attempted to unload supplies in Iwo Jima, at daylight, giving some target opportunity to our Betties. It´s possible that the enemy is facing a few logistical troubles, as their F4F unit didn´t receive replacements after being anihilated by our Zeroes. The enemy didn´t visit us again in Rangoon.

RE: After the disaster....

Post by leehunt27@bloomberg.net »

.....some AK's piloted by skeleton crews dropped off some "key equipment" at Iwo Jima... they quickly jumped overboard as the Betty's attacked and swam to join the Navy Nurses on the beach with the other Marines...

Good news????

Post by Bombur »

-Imperial palace, Tokyo, 09/23/42

-Emperor Bombur: Gentleman, any idea on how to do with the current situation?
-Yamamoto: Maybe we could surrender?
-Yamaguchi: Surrender is out of question, at least when we still have an intact carrier force. KB, btw, has just located another fast transport group west of Iwo Jima. Four DD´s were sunk.
-Yamamoto: What about our losses?
-Yamaguchi: Two Kates and two Vals
-Yamamoto: We will miss these four planes (and crews) more than the enemy will miss the 4 DD´s...
-Emperor Bombur: What´s the reason for all this defeatism?
-Yamamoto: Maybe the fact we´re heading to defeat before 1944....
-Tojo: Don´t be so pessimistic, we are going to receive lots of new IJAAF planes
-Yamamoto: Yes, and the enemy will get new USN and USAAF planes....
-Yamaguchi: At least we can inflict them heavy losses before the final defeat
-Emperor Bombur: You´re forbidden to use this word again!!!
-Yamamoto: losses?????

ALLIED COMMANDER UPDATE:

For those of you just tuning in, American Marines in a brave dash across the Pacific, hold Wake, Marcus Island & Iwo Jima as of September 1942.   Meanwhile the British have retaken half of Burma and the Australians are approaching Kendari and the rest of the SRA.  New Guinea also fell and the Chinese coast has been reopened to the Allied World...

---4 destroyers bearing extra ice cream scoopers for the Marines and their Navy Nurse dates on the beach at Iwo Jima were sunk, but thankfully AFTER they dropped off their precious cargos.  The Marines celebrate their British comrades good fortunate at Mandalay, where several brigades of brave Japanese troops swam across the muddy Irrawaddy river rather than shoot back at the oncoming Brits & Indian chindit forces.  Real estate prices in Rangoon plummeted as Japanese troops prepared to flee that city as well.

----The mosquito-like nuisance of Japanese Zeroes and Betty's near Iwo should be resolved "as soon as those lazy punks at the S.F. dockyards get their act together" commented Admiral Nimitz.  Hundreds of eager pilots and new fighter planes are itchin' to get off the tarmac at various American bases and start going on sight seeing missions over Tokyo.

---Meanwhile, American bombers from Iwo Jima and China have begun dropping leaflets advocating surrender to the Japanese on the mainland.  So far their appeals have been rebuffed by the Imperial Headquarters though, so it looks like there will be a bloodbath on the ocean (or when the B-29's arrive) before the end...

-Unfortunately, the last events in Rangoon forced us to evacuate northern Burma, where our troops were risking encirclement. The destruction of the Burma air force made the resupply of these troops a logistical nightmare. Another enemy convoy was heavily hit by our planes flying from Saipan. It is uncertain what was the purpose of the convoy. The new enemy base at Namlea was greatly weakened by a combination of naval and air attacks. The enemy lost, today, his 150th ship. Another enemy attack on Rangoon resulted in 13 planes destroyed in the ground (damaged planes in their majority), but also costed the enemy 7 bombers with their crews.

"Note to Japanese Army and Navy Air Commands: last results prompt us to firmly recommend the Supply Command to issue numerous low-cost high-efficiency view glasses to our bomber crews, primarly to the bomber, pilot and navigator positions, in order to improve drastically the current performance against enemy static, 3km wide targets."

ALLIED COMMANDER UPDATE:

9/26/42-- First Canadian units enter the fray near Iwo Jima & Marcus Island, many more to arrive. More importantly, the first American & Canadian troops begin pre-planning invasion hexes on the Japanese mainland!!!  We mention this of course, only to inspire fear in our enemies and cause them to weaken their defenses by shifting more troops to Home Island Defense.

--The happy villages of northern Burma rejoice as Japanese troops abandon Mandalay, Pagan and the other rail hexes on the way to Rangoon. One can only wonder if Rangoon itself will be evacuated soon.  Heavy enemy forces are still apparently in Rangoon concluding fire-sale real estate transactions.

--Australians holed up in Namlea (just north of Darwin) wonder if, perhaps, they might be consigned to garrison duty here interminably, stuck with malaria, hardtack, and no Navy Nurses like their American comrades sunbathing on Iwo Jima.

--US Marines on Iwo Jima test fire their coastal defense guns from Mount Suribachi, newly arrived with great sacrifice from many now sunken transports.

The Carrier battle of Marcus Island

Post by Bombur »

-A desperate attempt by Japanes forces to raid the enemy base at Marcus Island resulted in a massive Carrier battle, with more than 500 aircraft lost (about 250 for each side). Both sides lost one Carrier up to now (Enterprise vs. Junyo), but the USN carriers suffered more serious damage, on the other side, they are far closer to a safe home port. The result in Tokyo is being seen as a defeat to the IJN.

RE: The Carrier battle of Marcus Island

Post by Bombur »

-Japanese Carrier Hosho was sunk while trying to flee from the battle theater. Most of remaining carriers still operational. We have no clues on what is going on with USN carriers. A few Betties from Tokyo attempted to attack enemy ships but weren´t able to find the target....

RE: The Carrier battle of Marcus Island

Post by Bombur »

Imperial palace Tokyo

-Yamamoto: I´m becoming somewhat nervous about these meetings in the imperial palace, if the enemy knows our location, they can send lots of heavy bombers to destroy the palace....
-Emperor Bombur: Don´t worry, Tokyo is invulnerable....well, talking about invulnerability, what is happening with KB?
-Yamamoto: We don´t know, KB had entered radio silence since they departed Tokyo for a raid against Marcus Island....a Zero from Hiryu has landed yesterday in Tokyo with a written report of a big carrier battle. It seems the enemy carriers surprised us, but the superior spirit of our Samurais allowed us to achieve a draw. We exchanged one Junyo class CV and the Hosho for a Yorktown class fleet carrier. It also seems that at least 4 another enemy carriers were heavily damaged.
-Emperor Bombur: What about the state of our surviving carriers
-Yamamoto: Here lies the mistery.....
-Emperor Bombur: If your report is correct, then the enemy will have a hard time taking their Carriers back to home
-Yamamoto: I don´t know...Marcus Islands seems to have enough facilities for emergency repairs, but it will be hard to repair 4 fleet carriers at the same time. Anyway, we weren´´t able to get report on the loss of any extra enemy carrier, and the state of the five surviving ships is also unknown

RE: The Carrier battle of Marcus Island

Post by leehunt27@bloomberg.net »

This communication between the White House and Admiral Nimitz was leaked to the Japanese press:

CINCPAC HQ, Pearl Harbor, October 1942:

Iwo Jima Marine Garrison: Where are the ice cream and sunbathing lotion transports?!!!!!!!  My men are dying out here on the beach!
CINCPAC: Enemy carriers have threatened the sea lanes recently.
Marines: Yeh, so, that's your job, sink carriers!! We took Mount Suribachi in two days, what have you done for us lately, huh?
CINCPAC: Well, i think we pushed them away from you for a little while.
Marines: So the ice cream, sunbathing lotion, Playstation 3 and other necessary equipment are on the way?
CINCPAC: Well, maybe.  We need to check the intelligence report and see if any more Japanese carriers are sunk.
Marines: That doesn't sound too encouraging.

10/03/42-A secret sushibar in Tokyo
-Emperor Bombur: These are sad times, we must hide from enemy bombers all the day. At least sake isn´t being rationed....
-Yamamoto: Don´t worry, my Emperor, I have good news!
-Emperor Bombur: Good news. I was about to delete these words from my dictionary! What are those "good news".
-Yamamoto: Intel confirmed the sinking of a second carrier, near Marcus Island. It was identified as another Yorktown class carrier
-Emperor: These are indeed good news, but I have the impression that the enemy doesn´t need more carriers....their LBA will be enough to do the job.
-Yamamoto: I beg to disagree. We believe that the loss of 2 Carriers and heavy damage to another 3 will cripple the enemy offensive force, at least in the periphery of our empire
-Emperor Bombur: Well, so we can change our capital to Palembang?
-Yamamoto: Who is suffering from defeat disease now?
-Emperor Bombur: Any other news?
-Yamamoto: Yes, a message from Iwo Jima was intercepted by our intel. We suspect it was a deliberate leak to draw us on a invasion of the Island. They are complaining about the lack of sunbath lotion for their Navy nurses.
-Emperor: Btw, why don´t we use our Nicks to strafe their Navy nurses at Iwo Jima? This will give a blow to enemy morale
-Yamamoto: This is indeed a good use for Nicks, but I fear that we will lose more Nicks than they will lose Navy nurses....
