I really would have loved to force the enemy to retreat but that would be a bit too much to expect I guess, we were holding the line and the enemy suffered a lot of disabled troops so it was a victory for us anyway and building up his units at Manila will take supplies and the final battle for Luzon will only be about supplies as it´s going to be impossible to defeat all these units at Clark and/or Manila when they are sitting behind level 9 forts and fully supplied...

the super E appear around Formosa, wonder why it took so long as Rainer is aware of my subs in this area, got around a dozen operating here... in theory they´re within Allied LBA range set to naval strikes but usually the bombers don´t launch or "fail due to range or weather"... out of 10 times in range, I end up with two strikes when something like 20% of the bombers manage to appear over the targeted task force...

amazingly the sub sank one of the super E and managed to escape... also something that only tends to happen one out of 15 times for me...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Zamboanga at 75,89

Sounds of submarine breaking up detected!
Escort abandons search for sub

one of our amphib TFs moves through Zamboanga and sinks a midget sub... midgets failed to score a single hit during the whole war... they´re only purpose so far has been to act as "targets" for our patrol aircraft which are drawn into a base hex to be targetted by the Cap... if there isn´t a ship in a base, the patrols never get touched by Cap as if they wouldn´t fly into the hex... so a midget usually is enough to get the die roll of a patrol bomber sighting it to be followed by the Cap vs patrol bomber die roll it seems...

even the P-38, that are not that well working for me compared to P-47 or Corsair for example, are killers if they get the dive... pretty much every of my fighters is a killer with the dive...

we even get twice the number of bombers over the target in the afternoon which fail to score any hits... in total 6% of the bombers managed to get to a TF that has been spotted something like a dozen times by the uncountable numbers of patrols both in the am and pm phase... the longer Rainer can operate so freely in this area well within my LBA range, the more it will invite him to send more of his ships...

I must be one lucky bastard as this is the third engagement recently with two super E sunk but only one sub sunk... usually it has been something like a 5:1 for the super E in the war which lead to the total retreat of Allied subs...

lol, is the game going crazy now??? First we sink a super E for no loss, then we see three P-51 flying a sweep together and then we even see three P-38 squadrons flying on a sweep together... I bet we won´t see that for the rest of the war as the chances to see that were 3 times 100:1...

what you can see in the combat report could not have gone any better for us, we sink a super E and take down roughly three dozen enemy fighters during our sweeps for only three fighters lost... what you can´t see in the combat report but showed up in the replay was a CVE going down... [X(] I also didn´t see the reason for it, I just got the message that flooding is increasing followed by glugg glugg... [X(]

looking at the ops report I had to find out that one of the escorting DD rammed the escort carrier and sent it to the bottom... it has been a lightly damaged CVE that was heading back to an ARD at Darwin for repairs but obviously the colission with the DD caused so much sys and additional flt damage that it has been enough to see the escort carrier sinking in the same phase... so much about how lucky I have been in this turn... lol

what Japanese bombers fail to achieve is done by one of my destroyers...

total carrier losses is now something like 1 CV and 6 CVE... not bad I would say for three years of war when the IJN has been superior for halve of the time... as long time readers may know, the IJN lost all but a couple of CV/CVL/CVE already with nothing left that could be considered more than an annoyance... the enemy has moved Peggies into my supply lines again and launches a strike against a TF that ends up to be in range of leaking Cap from Cotabato which of course means mega bad news for the Peggies as all are shot down... mentioned it earlier, it has been a bad idea to bypass all these level 2-3 airfields with small garissons as these then can easily become annoying... lesson learnt, in future games I won´t bypass anything that can turn into an annoyance (I haven´t bypassed anything that could become a real threat though) and will have rgt sized units taking out these bases and at the moment I´ve got several rgt and bgd preparing for these small bases to finally take them out as they are still able to have bombers fly nav attacks after being cut off for something like 1.5 years while taking more bombs than an average city in Germany during the whole war...

xAK Iron Chieftan, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

a second TF is attacked too and this time there are only two Thunderbolts over the ships that take down a couple of bombers but the remaining three each put a bomb into the freighter that is abandoned later in the day... sinking a freighter for the loss of a dozen Peggies and their pilots isn´t really a good deal to me and these guerilla attacks also won´t divert real efforts to counter them...

just the usual attacks and that´s how it´s going on for the next couple of months... not only the AAR has become really boring but also the game istelve as there´s just nothing real happening as the IJN has been hiding for 99% of the war and the same has been true for the enemy airforce for nearly 2 years now...

the endless number of piece meal strikes every turn doesn´t make it any better as it slows down the replay dramatically and it also spams the AAR... as I want to have a complete AAR with all the combat reports I´m not going to delete all the spam, otherwise I´m just going to be told that I´ve got no evidence for what I´m talking about... as if that would have helped at any time yet...

if you´re lucky and you order 100 fighters to sweep a target you usually get 50% showing up before the bombers but in the usual way of < squadron sweeps and then you can be asured that the 50% rest is going to show up after the bombers showed up... there´s is no way of any sane strike coordination (if you want to call it this way) in this game...

recon showed a couple of dozen enemy aircraft here and I´ve sent in the hammer and luckily enough we catch them on the ground, guess they were ordered to fly fighter bomber attacks on my shipping if it would get close... doesn´t happen very often that I catch a bigger number of Rainer´s aircraft on the ground...

we keep taking empty bases in Thailand... this is the Army moving down from Chiang Mai... I expect Rainer to retreat towards Bangkok to hold there, surely Maginot line style defenses there and an urban light hex for two times defense bonus...

E No.28 fails to find sub, continues to search...
Escort abandons search for sub

Croaker got away unharmed while Barbel even manages to score with three torps on the super E... we stay lucky in this area as we´re now in the lead again in super E sunk for sunk subs in return... Barbel survives with 22 sys 20 flt... the appearance of the super E in this area again proves that Rainer can freely operate within my LBA range as his ships hardly ever are attacked and if my bombers try to, they fail to locate due to range or weather...

we´ve also started to bomb Formosa more often, there are around 40 enemy units on the island but most of it is clear terrain so that´s going to be interesting when we are invading as the island sure is on our list of upcoming major operations... the enemy could retreat into Hengchun on the Southern tip which is wooden terrain or to a small base on the Eastern coast which is mountaineous terrain... what the enemy can´t do is deny us all the clear terrain bases which would mean to have potential level 9 airfields another step closer to Japan but still out of fighter range and without fighters we can´t do anything against the Japanese industry as I´m not willing to throw away my B-29 force...

the enemy moved lots of fighters to Aparri, guess he´s covering an incoming convoy and we´ve decided to attack with a hell a lot of aircraft, doesn´t matter what you decide when the engine decides to doesn´t care about your decisions... we start with the usual < squadron sized sweeps... oh lord, please help... [8|] the fact to be a) outnumbered and b) stupid to not do ceiling sweeps all the time while the enemy is on top most of the time again means ending up with a defeat for the first incoming Mustang squadron... ehem, cough, the first PART of a Mustang squadron...

interesting one... the enemy gets to sweep his own base, easily done, just order a bomber squadron to attack the ground troops there and if the escorts fail you are sweeping your own base which isn´t possible to ORDER the same... anyone realizing what´s going on or are the blinders still in place? We´ve got leaking Cap in place coming in from Batangas which does ok for being outnumbered, leaking Cap and dived by most fighters being at their ceiling...

a single < squadron sweep is all we get before the bombers show up... I love it... giving orders is senseless in this game... with what is coming in with the bombers you can roughly speak about 10% of the fighters that have been ordered to either sweep or escort to Aparri... senseless, senseless, senseless... and I´m the forum´s asshole and a) don´t know how the game works, b) got no experience and c) am dumb overall... and I´m telling you that no matter which orders you give, this game is not able to come up with any form of sane strikes... I may referre to BoB bombing the Reich again...

and after the usual click esc a hundred times party, the mega sweep shows up, halve a day after the bombers... out of the ordered squadrons to sweep, a whopping 18 Mustangs manage to show up over the target before the bombers with 115 fighters coming in as one formation far behind the bombers... funny as always... and yet another perfectly realistic example when you are not allowed to complain about it... after the latest blow up of a former dev on the tech forum (for no reason) I wonder why I shouldn´t be allowed to cry like a baby and do a five year old´s name calling as the unpaid dev does so to a customer that actually paid for the product...

there have been over the board accepted issues in WITP, some of them still exist in AE (but now are denied - because noone has been paid??) and some new turned up (that are also denied)... the fact that AE is a bored up and greatly enhanced WITP makes it the best game about this theatre but I can´t see the perfectionism others seem to to experience...

the Mitchells in action and six bombers score 10 hits... now I know that in WITP a bomber could only score one hit, I´m unsure about AE when there is one side saying that is still true (would be FOW then) and others saying it´s possible for bombers to score more than one hit... all three small freighters went down so I guess each would have been hit by two bombs then...

being encouraged by yesterday´s "failed escort sweeps" to Manila the enemy does the same today... a sidenote, neither yesterday nor today did any bombers actually show up over Manila so both the escorts must have "failed" as well as the bombers have failed to get to the target... [:D] we´ve moved more fighters to Batangas though which also resulted in far more fighters leaking to Manila which did better than yesterday against the ceiling sweeps with none of our fighters being set to their ceiling (yet)... as the enemy seems to intensifying his ceiling sweeps and ceiling Cap again (perhaps only my gut feeling) we´re also intending to go back into the spiral up into the stratosphere... most of our sweeps were flown at 31000ft or lower since the air team leader stated it would be an exploit to go with ceiling sweeps/Cap... we do NOT have a hr about it in this PBEM as we started about a year before the "discussion" about ceiling sweeps finally ended (for me) with TheElf´s statement about it being an exploit so I sure won´t blame Rainer for doing this kind of attacks as I can do the same...

as nothing is going to be changed I probably will go with one of the suggested hrs on this matter even though none of them really convinces me... since the squashing of the land based radar bug this whole matter has become far better anyway... both things I´ve complained about for one and a halve years, one thing I called a bug (fixed with the latest patch), one thing I never called a bug but a design flaw ("fixed" for me with TheElf´s official statement - I don´t mean that sarcastic btw)...

a second "sweep" is coming in and that one was completely shred as it was set to come in low which meant the dive exclusively for our fighters which had a field day against the second wave while also the first suffered already... the performance difference of the first sweep coming in HIGH to the second sweep coming in LOW was astonishing...

Morning Air attack on TF, near Hengchun at 85,68

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 40 NM, estimated altitude 4,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Allied aircraft
B-25D1 Mitchell x 8

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:

Naval Attack: 3 plane(s) with no ordnance

Naval Attack: 6 x 500 lb SAP Bomb
6 x B-25D1 Mitchell bombing from 100 feet
Naval Attack: 6 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

don´t know what this kind of attacked was supposed to be, this definately looked like a bug... why? a) the bombers are set to 1000 ft nav attack and not 100 ft nav attack so they should have attacked at 1000 ft, something they´ve done lots of times in the past and b) the Mitchells seemed to be treated like FIGHTERS when we saw "Oscar shooting from BEHIND at Mitchell" which is something you only see in fighter vs fighter and not fighter vs bomber and c) another thing you only see in fighter vs fighter is "Mitchell jettison ordnance"...

this has never happened in this PBEM before and we´ve seen fighters attacking bombers probably more than a couple of thousand times already... being a strange engagement the bombers also didn´t score any hits...

CAP engaged:
64th Sentai with Ki-43-IIIa Oscar (3 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
(3 plane(s) diverted to support CAP in hex.)
3 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 37400
Raid is overhead

the enemy fighters took a beating today, FOW involved a 5:1 A2A which is above of what I try to achieve with my fighters... my goal is to achieve a 3:1 or slightly better A2A at the moment with a 2.5:1 in total losses hopefully soon... by mid 45 I expect to achieve a 4-5:1 A2A and a 3:1 in total losses... guess we will be behind real life in both ratios for A2A and total losses... biggest problems has been and still is to get our fighters over the target in real numbers and not in laughable piece meal waves that are outnumbered x:1 nearly all the time when we don´t fight leaking Cap...

Image

No in all my tests any strafer type bomber-(attack bomber) will attack at 100 feet when set to any altitude below 6,000 feet. Otherwise 6.000 and above, they will level bomb normally. The D1 mitchell is an attack bomber. Also, any fighter or fighter bomber set to 1,000 feet will drop to 100 and attack. Any other height and they will level bomb (and not very well)...

not in my game with the latest official patch, all my attack bombers bomb at the altitude they are set to. All of them and you can see that numerous of times in this AAR. As I´ve kept them on 1000ft for nav attack, they´ve also attacked at 1000ft.

Bummer about the comments re. bypassed bases still being able to be a pain. I was hoping to bypass quite a bit in my game.

On the place side out of supply bases are fairly easy meat, and if you can land without opposition you don't need to commit warships.

Is he supplying them via submarine or something?

I would not bypass these bases anymore. Not that they would be a real threat but they´re annoying and a good way to deal with them are all those independent rgt and bgd. Rainer certainly uses his transport subs a lot but if you look at their capacity then I´m not really impressed, even though that might be enough to keep these bases supplied to also launch an airstrike now and then. But like I´ve said, I wouldn´t bypass them anymore but would commit a couple rgt to easily take them out over time.

had hundreds of fighters set to sweep but only the 25 P-38 managed to show up before the bombers and those P-38 got shot up badly anyway, so I can´t say I was pleased to see all the bombers coming in already with a meager escort that usually gets shot up to but to my complete surprise, there was nearly no fighting at all against the main bomber strike... of course I was then prepared to see the usual follow up piece meal strikes being shot up...

the rest didn´t show up at all...

we´ve lost two dozen aircraft today, the enemy slightly more... it´s been pure luck we didn´t suffer more as the operations aren´t at all carried out as planned or expected...
