RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs Cannonfodder

Post by Mundy »

My main roadblock is a lack of assault transports. I've had more come in since this kicked off. Tarawa's on my short list next. In the Marshalls, provided I take this objective cleanly, I'll hopscotch this division around the island to nail them down.

13 February 1943

Another shot at my invaders. They turned back quickly this time. I have two more CVEs at Portland, making this a total of 12 in-theatre.

My attack at Cocanada...
Ground combat at Cocanada (41,37)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 126647 troops, 1856 guns, 1671 vehicles, Assault Value = 3799

Defending force 40671 troops, 462 guns, 952 vehicles, Assault Value = 1428

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Allied adjusted assault: 2779

Japanese adjusted defense: 4305

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 2)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:

28th (East African) Brigade

23rd Indian Division
14th Indian Division
77th LRP Brigade
5307th Composite Regiment
111th LRP Brigade
3rd Commando Brigade
19th Indian Division
14th Army Engineer Battalion
2nd Hyder Lancers Regiment
Waziristan Division
XV Indian Corps

Defending units:
2nd Guards Division
14th Tank Regiment
18th Division
2nd Tank Regiment
2nd Tank Division
7th Ind. Tank Brigade
3rd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
25th Army
18th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
3rd Medium Field Artillery Regiment
3rd Mortar Battalion

I'll hit them again. If the fort keeps dropping I'll try shocking at that point. Otherwise, it's pretty much WWI here.

Remove your smaller units from the attack. BDEs/RGTs doesn´t do well in situations like this. The loss of AV will matter little. I´ve learned this the hard way in Burma! [X(]

PS. Don´t shock attack.

Roi-Namur is rather deep in the Marshalls. This is quite a long leap for you. If you are to succeed here you need to keep up operational pressure to keep the iniative. Otherwise Roi-Namur will become bombarded and laid to siege. Better do all you can to improve your positioning with other invasions there before the KB returns from the Indian Ocean. In the future I think it would be wise to target mutually supporting bases in an invasion; its risky to only take a single base surrounded by Japanese bases unless you have unquestioned control of the sea and air.

I probably should have hit something more on the edges. This part of the war is new to me, so I guess I learn the hard way.

16 February 1944

CF's response was basically a human wave of mostly destroyers with some cruisers sprinkled in. I did see this coming, and I broke off the Standard battleships from the amphibious TF into an ASuW force. Of course, he dodged them and went straight to the heart.

Just my CVEs actually launched any raids. I'm wondering if my fleet ships sitting on the landing site prevented any attacks from them.

For all the smoke and noise, I'm really not that bad off. I lost one AO and some troop ships, with a sprinkling of others with serious damage. The main invasion force bailed out, which I hadn't seen before. My CVEs that suffered the surface attack are actually fairly lightly damaged -- all < 15 sys. Everyone's scattered all over the place to the NE of Koi-Namur. I have everyone set up to regroup on the main amphib TF and head back to Pearl. My fleet ships will park about 4 hexes east of the target and try to get his cruisers. With any decent cover, I'm not worried about the Nells and Betties. I still have enough troops to finish the job and they'll continue the attack. They may have to wait eating hermit crabs until I can get a second wave out.

Some of his attacking planes appeared to come from Wotje and/or Maloelap. I'll probably target the both of them with the next wave.

My rocket ships did a good job on his defenders, so I'll make heavy use of them in the future.

It was interesting to note his troops didn't look sufficiently prepped for their own island. I'm guessing I'll finish them in a day or two. The 6th Infantry Div will have to sit tight until I come back. If I didn't mention before, three more CVEs are enroute to Pearl from the States, so that's extra air.

Don't think of me as being overly rash. Since the way the war started, I do put a lot of thought into what I do. Sometimes not the right thought, but I'm trying. I do appreciate the advice you guys give me, and I'm not blowing it off. It's just that all the advice in the world is sorta an abstraction until you can see the results firsthand. My four fleet carriers are holding up nicely against his land based air, so while KB is away, I do have some freedom on what I hit. I just need to respect the surface aspect more. I did leave myself short of cruisers in that part of the map. My one Omaha did fight well, and did put a few 6" shells through Kako

Recon on Tarawa, showing about 10,000 troops there, so that will be a fair nut to crack when the time comes. I'm probably going to finish off the Marshalls first, though. I'm hoping to get a good advanced sub base set up there eventually, and I can threaten places like Truk from there.

I probably should have hit something more on the edges. This part of the war is new to me, so I guess I learn the hard way.
Sure, understandable. I don't have a ton of experience with this part of the war either truth be told. But in the absence of such experience I believe the best course is a more conservative one. Once you have a better feel of how it works you can try to do more ambitious things. That's pretty much how I plan on handling it. But the way I see it this Roi-Namur landing was extremely ambitious given how deeply positioned it was. LBA is your friend. Build up the air bases and use it to your advantage and deny the LBA of your enemy.

You were both lucky and unlucky in that combat.

Fleet carriers should never be in the landing hex - ties them to a clear target the enemy reaction will be going toward.

The LCIs that did so well on the landing bombardment are not rocket equipped - the LCI(G) is a gun ship. LCI(R) are the rocket carriers. I prefer the gun LCIs as they are not one-shot efforts and can support more landing phases in the initial assault.

17 February 1944

Sorta a standoff in the Marshalls. His cruisers are under a heavy George CAP, which beat up my strikes pretty bad. I managed a couple 1,000 pound bombs on a crippled destroyer and a single 250 pounder on a cruiser. Likewise, his Nells and Betties are easily fended off by the CAP put up by five CVEs. Well, fighters won't stop landings of troops, so if this is the status quo here, that's fine with me.

I'll be back.

Yorktown is four days from arrival in Panama, with the CVL, Bataan, showing up in about 10 day. Over the next month and a half, another CV and CVL will arrive, along with another 8 or so CVEs over that time period. I'll have enough air defense for my ships. I'll stand down the bombers next time. My search planes have apparently been landing hits, but nothing I can really see.

I've re-tasked a division and armored battalion each for Wotje and Maloelap. Re-start on the edges. Maybe I'll have enough transport to do both at once. I've had plenty more come in since this kicked off.

My first B-29 squadron is 35 days out from Aden. I believe the production line starts up in April.

I've no direct observation of KB right now. ASW is aggressive at Diego Garcia right now. Recon's not really indicating carriers in port there. Supply's getting rather thin on Ceylon right now, though multiple convoys are on the way.

My subs have been averaging about one cargo ship per day.

I think you really also need to be making a move in the Gilberts as well, preferably with some occupations that don't require any preparation. Plenty of islands there simply asking to be taken. Because if you just retasked those units for Wotje and Maloelap it means you need at least 2 months to get them ready to go. Your guys on Roi-Namur likely will not make it. At least if you start moving in the Gilberts today you can force the Japanese to divide their efforts between their and suppressing of Roi-Namur. Only takes a few weeks to occupy a dot hex and throw up level 2 AF which can provide 150 fighters in CAP; its quicker and requires fewer resources than taking a base from the Japanese if you count prep time.

Fleet CVs and CVLs suffer a 50% penalty in a base hex. CVEs don´t.

Btw, your TFs look really strange? Why is Honolulu and Biloxi in a CV TF? Biloxi is a Cleveland class CL which is pretty much one of the best surface ships you get. Don´t waste them in a CV TF. A TF with 4 Clevelands and 8 Fletchers would have devastated his CA TF. Hell, even 8-12 Fletchers would have done that. You also have Detroit (an old Omaha CL) in a BB TF. This is not a good idea. Remove the CL or the BBs won´t fight optimally. With better setup TFs you would most likely have done a lot better then you did.

There are some good post on the forum regarding TF creation. Look into it! [:)]

Joc, I guess it's an old habit of packing cruisers into any carrier TF. I was worried about getting enough flak in the group. The last surface results have pointed me around to your line of thinking, so I'll take more care in composition next time. I should have also reviewed the ship leadership as well. Shooting wasn't very impressive. Canberra has just arrived at Pearl, so I have a little more muscle for next time. Normally I wouldn't include an Omaha in a battleforce like this, but I needed the help.

I'm a bit overstacked at Baker with engineers right now. After four days, progress past a level 1 airfield is still stuck at 1%, so it appears that this will never turn into a significant airbase. I'll be pulling out the excess support and construction troops as soon as I am able. I also have a USMC defense battalion there, which will stay.

Recon's looking at Tabiteuea next turn, which is the only other non-dot base in the Gilberts. If it's well populated, I'll be taking that instead of Tarawa on the first go. I'm taking my last lesson to heart.

At this point, my main bottleneck is troop transport, so I can't run a bunch of invasions at once on this side of the map. I do have a constant stream of APs and APAs incoming, as I'm receiving about one a day as of late. I'm up to 13 CVEs also, which have done well with Nettie raids. I've grouped them in blocks of five or so and spread them around.

Those tiny atolls which have no base AF level are incredibly difficult to build up. I've managed to get a few of them to level 2 but no level 3 yet. That being said, who cares if you are a bit over stacking? I've overstacked some atolls to nearly 4x their normal capacity and it was totally fine. Baker is a forward position; this is where you want to have extra engineers. That way when you move forward with your limited transports you don't have to ship them as far.

I hope the other lesson here related to grabbing multiple bases at once. When you land in Tabiteuea, you should land in at least 2 other dot hex atolls nearby and the same time. Having mutually supporting air bases will go a long way.

Sounds like a good idea. I could probably divert resources from the Samoa area, as they're reasonably close. I've networked that area to a faretheewell (6 bases), and at this point, I don't think he'll be invading that ways anymore.

I'll take a look at the best islands for airfield development. Many of them are technically "Allied", so no real invasion would be needed.

As a further note, my real intel on Diego Garcia was lacking. My recon B-24 unit had fatigued itself to zero active airplanes, so I've re-tasked some PB4Y-1Cs to Cochin to look again. Hopefully, they'll reveal carriers docked there.

If they stick around another month or so, my B-29s are going to come as a shock. I wonder if I should kick that off as a low-level night mission or not. He doesn't appear to have fighters based there.

FM-2 Wildcats have come off the production line, and I already have over 50 in the pool.

And even the ones that are not need only a single small paratrooper detachment dropped by PBYs to take. My favorite tactic is using PBYs to airlift engineers that way then ship over the remainder with an LST which is cheap and unloads quickly. Moreover, since those ships are carrying unit fragments of of equipment of which you have large stockpiles (motor support and engineering vehicles), even if those LSTs are sunk it's easy to replace the losses. Can't say the same with US infantry as those squads are always in demand. I've always felt more comfortable putting transports carrying engineers into harms way than my own LCUs.

Mostly recon.

Recon's shows ships in port at Diego Garcia, but no indication of carriers. At this point, I'm not sure if they are there or not.

Recon at Tabiteuea indicates about 3600 troops there, with a sprinkling of armor and guns. A division should be able to take them. They'll be first when I hit that area.

I attacked at Cocanada last turn. Took heavy losses, but knocked forts down to one. I'll give it another hit.

Next month bubbletop P-47s will be rolling off the line at something like 170 per month. Looking forward to that.

I'm still trying to figure out Diego Garcia. No apparent presence of carriers. One ASW group of DDs is chasing some of my subs pretty far out. Another TF is a little to the NE, moving easterly. Two ships, unknown types. Supply on Colombo is extremely low, but a big convoy will dock next turn with another a few days behind. More are on the way. I've actually got all the xAKs at Cape town out, which I've never accomplished before.

Only for 4 months. Then you are stuck with only 50 P38s and 30 P51As (so only 80 USAAF fighters/month) until the P51D starts production 11/44. So those P47s will have to last a looooong time (5-6 months). You will have to ration them very, very carefully.

Its basically 42 all over again. [:(]

I think you've already figured it out. The KB is gone. Back the Pacific where it belongs.

I am running into this right now and was in my last game. Joc is right, you need to be careful with these tough planes.

At this time in my game I find myself with piles of navy and marine planes though.

I'm not 100% on that yet, as a Judy just harassed one of my subs that ways. Recon still shows 3 util planes on Diego. I'm toying with the idea of a fast battleship bombardment that ways, led by one of the Iowas.

I won't go overboard on the new Jugs. I figure I'll flip a max of 10 squadrons over, unless new squadrons draw from the pool. Can't remember if they do that or not.
