I've folded and got one (arriving as a birthday present). Like my Ipod it'll be a useful thing when I'm downroute or deployed and I can carry loads of books in a fraction of the space.

I'm thinking for big reference tombs.....having the solid paper copy is preferable. (though they are big and heavy) but for most of the smaller campaign history and non-technical history accounts...an ebook reader would be preferable now. Thats what made my ex-library explode over the past 10 years.....books covering campaigns and aspects of militaries from the Spanish American war to Korea. Many of them were one off reads but would be useful to have around to reference for specific factoids.

FWIW, My wife has both the Kindle and an older Sony e-reader. The latter offers notation capabilities that the former does not, IIRC. I believe that the Nook may also offer notation capabilities, but its e-library is much more restrictive than many others available out there.

Anything iBook can read should have the same abilities, and that should include ePub format, which is the most likely format you will find reference works in.

I've been impressed with the iPad's notation abilities in the iBook format. My wife uses it extensively to highlight and add notes to her bible. Anything iBook can read should have the same abilities, and that should include ePub format, which is the most likely format you will find reference works in.

Its too bad that so far, none of the books i'd like to get in eFormat are available. Maybe if i click the "notify the editor you want this book in eformat" 1000 times we'll see a change.

sadly....most of them are gone. Had i more time, i would have taken up JWE and others on the storage option....but within 7 days of being told i was being upgraded....i was living at work. I retain most of my air research books (2 boxes worth) but i'm regretting the loss of my big technical references. Admitedly alot of the history books needed to go....either read and done with or dilapitated and needing replacement anyway.

lol....i'm not even yet settled on where i'm going to be living in the near future yet but already i've been doing some research on $$$ to replace the tombs i want back eventually. As mentioned.....eBook readers are getting more attractive to me. Books like Shattered Sword and such would be perfect for the Nook and it's kin leaving me to collect technical references like Garzke and Friedman and Lacroix

on an amusing side note......last sunday i was called by the X's mother. She and her husband were at my old abode cleaning out all my stuff still there. (mainly clothes along with a computer and a LED monitor etc). She also wanted to know if i could pick up the dog.

She wanted to know if i wanted to come pick them up. In the course of the discussion, i learned that my ex had not even told her parents what had happened.....having only told them that "I had just packed up and left"

Needless to say i took the opportunity to enlighten her on the fact that her daughter had upgraded recently and that there would be a new face over soon for Dinner and the holidays. As for my stuff and the dog.....i was awarded a few moments of embarrased silence after informing her i could take neither given the fact that i was currently homeless.

if nothing else.....i think the ex will get a little Karmatic retribution soon when the fight starts due to her not having told her parents the truth. They don't get along well as it is.

I have been going back and forth regarding purchasing a less expensive Kindle or jumping into the Ipad type world. I have to have the ability to make notations, so that now leads me to think maybe an Ipad now, or wait to see if Apple competitors come up with something better. I sort of don't like Job's and his " we-know-what-is-best-for-you " approach. But I think I need to get over that [:)]

Ipads are way to expensive. I think i'd sooner go with the Nook....as long as it can notate. I think it can or will by the time they get around to digitalizing the history section of the electronic store.

Besides which....i already have a Macbook Pro. I'd be cheaper to read an ebook off that vs. buying an ipad which i'd probably end up dinging up. That or lose it. I still can't find my ipod....a shame as it reduces me to listening to the c-Pod once i start my road trip.

Everything has its place in life. All devices are just tools to get things done. Use the right tool. You'd never see an iPad in my server room, just like I wouldn't use Solaris on my ebook reader.

The iPad does a lot more things really well than the other reader-only devices. That's its distinguishing feature IMO. It's GPS app is stunningly better than anything else out there if only because the screen real estate is so much larger. Reading on it is a treat and it has excellent web surfing and email abilities. All the rest is pretty much fluff, though I'm sure the gamers might complain about that.

I've seen both the Kindle and the Nook and if you are sitting on the beach in direct sunlight, they'll probably serve you better. Add an umbrella and the iPad goes right back on top.

That is a good idea, maybe I will try a used Ipad just to see if I like using it.
