Very cool song. I actually own an old vinyl LP of the recording. It's hard to believe that Russians had to endure all that, and then, immediately, have Stalin's boot thrust down, once more, on their pitiful, undeserving necks. Shame isn't it, that more of music isn't devoted to enlightening the great unwashed as to excesses of government?

Oh, yeah, I'm very familiar with "The Ballad of Ira Hayes". I don't care for much country music, but for Johnny Cash I make an exception. However, he didn't write the song. It was composed by Pete La Farge.

On the 157th anniversary of the British victory at the Alma I’m listening to some ‘redcoat music’:
The Heights of Alma – Donovan Leitch
September last on the eighteenth day
We landed safe in the big Crimea,
In spite of all the foaming spray
To cheer our hearts for Alma.
That night we slept on the cold, cold ground,
No tent or shelter to be found;
And with the rain was almost drowned
Beneath the heights of Alma.
Let Britain’s sons long remember
The glorious twentieth of September
We caused the Russian to surrender
Along the heights of Alma.
Next morning the scorching sun did rise
Beneath the eastern cloudy sky;
Our noble chief Lord Raglan cried,
“Prepare to march for Alma.”
Oh, when the heights we hove in view,
The stoutest heart it did subdue
To see the Russian warlike crew
All upon the heights of Alma.
Let Britain’s sons long remember
The glorious twentieth of September
We caused the Russian to surrender
Along the heights of Alma.
Our Scottish lads with a sword and hose
They’re not the last as you may suppose;
So daringly they faced their foes,
And gained the heights of Alma.
To Sebastopol the Russian fled,
They left their wounded and the dead;
And the rivers there they all ran red
From the blood that spilled on Alma.
Let Britain’s sons long remember
The glorious twentieth of September
We caused the Russian to surrender
Along the heights of Alma.
Let Britain’s sons long remember
The glorious twentieth of September
We caused the Russian to surrender
Along the heights of Alma.

The Coldstream Guards advancing during the Battle of the Alma.

Because it's *the* music thread. If we'd sum up all the history threads during a four year period we'd probably get as much or more. Also, in this thread, people don't actually discuss music but post what they are listening now. If we'd get to deeper talk about music, I suspect that most of us wouldn't have much to say.ORIGINAL: Prince of Eckmühl
Well, I certainly can't quantify anyone's interest, one way or the other. But, I'd note that the topic in question "turned four" on September 8. And it's something on the order of fifty pages long. Clearly, some of our members have found the subject matter compelling enough to make many, many posts to the thread. Conversely, I don't see any fifty page threads devoted to military history. No big deal, really. I just find it, well, kind of ironic.Prince of Eckmuhl I do not take your question as a "slap", rather I find it a little strange. How can you deduce from this thread the amount of focus an individual places on music, and whether that focus is instead of military history?
