BB Tennessee is making its way forward from Bremerton for (hopefully) a year of service before her October 1944 upgrade. The KB might not have gone through the Java Sea, as subs there are not showing elevated DL. Of course they could have gone stealth, simply risking the subs, but more likely they have gone up west of Borneo.

The IJ air attacks SE of Kunming had a particularly good day.

4 supply hits for the B-24 groups at Pegu. A couple of RN cruisers (CA + DD and CL + DD) are in range to try and hits supply depots at Moulmein tonight (Moulmein still has Fires=1 from the last time!). 4th USMC Div is down to 14% disruption and is in line with the other non-artillery units. The artillery units are in the higher teens after keeping up their attacks. On our side of the supply ledger, we have about 64ktons supply at Ramree with another 20ktons in the harbor. And of course more is on the way. It is just possible that DAW HQ might see the need for KB to pay another disruptive visit to the Burma coast, so we'll get all we can landed in the meantime.

Bombardment of Yap showed flaming Nicks thrown high enough over the bay to be identified by sailors on board the bombarding cruisers. I think we'll try that again soon.

The bombardments at Babeldaob went well, as did the aerial bombings despite the presence of Nicks and Georges on CAP (most of which were shot down on this day). The ground assault went so well that the troops are in perfect shape for continuing the attack. In fact, it really looks as though the base will be captured tomorrow. In addition to a cruiser group, the remaining fast BB (3x fast BB) group will lend their guns to try and render the verdict in our favor. And on land - as we have good aerial defense against disruptive air strikes - a shock attack is ordered.

The bombardments of Moulmein found some parked aircraft but not the supply dumps. 3 supply hits by the B-24 raids on Pegu, though.

Bombardment of Peleliu revealed only the naval fortress, no aircraft hit at the air base. The assault on Babeldaob went very well and seized the base and more than 20ktons supply. The base is near fully damaged and will take a while to repair. Support troops are already on the way (3 days for base forces) and tonight several hundred defensive mines will be laid, plus mine sweeping will begin. The troops will rest for probably two days before resuming the assault to clean out the island. Although casualties were low, the shock attack disrupted the assault elements.

Almost never. I have two divisions (plus some other units) preparing for Rota, and one of those divisions will be less than 100%. However, Rota has long-term recon of about 5k to 7k troops so even if one division takes a hit on landing they should still overwhelm the target. I would have landed them both at 50% to 75% in this case but the time of logistics-movement-etc. has meant more preparation (I originally was going to go right into one of the big islands but Truk took so long...).

It all depends on the target. What's there? What state is it in? What terrain? What fortifications? Is a shock attack required upon landing?

I do not have a formula; it's more of a feel for when less than 100% will do (and how much less!). At Babeldaob all the units were 100%. It was the same team that took Tulagi and had plenty of time due to the extended action on Truk. I think the big reason for quick success at Babeldaob was getting there before the Empire had gotten the defense to the state that it had planned. Obviously it will be later that Walter and I have that conversation (likely in this AAR) but that's my take on it right now.

I´ve learned the hard way not to do landings short of 100% prepp. Its nasty and you take disablements that will be very hard to recover when in an enemy base. Better to wait the extra days to get there IMO. [:)]

In our 2x2 (Walter is on the other side in that one too!) I just made an invasion of Victoria Point with a modest prep / modest morale / low experience unit and it took about 1/3 squads disabled, even with no shock attack. The objective was to get ashore in good enough shape to defend itself, which it has. There are other forces closing in on Chumphon, next door, and I want to prevent them retreating to Victoria Point and doubling up the defense.

So that is a special case, as is Rota (with very different details). I agree with Joc, which is why I started my answer to Guy with "almost never".

Tsuyung air base has repaired to the point that we are moving in two Chinese Air Force fighter groups (12 planes each), one of P-66 and one of P-40N. The runways are clear and the services 34% damaged. The problem is there is almost no supply, so we'll see how long they fly. It's been a couple or three turns since the Helens visited, and even the crack P38 pilots can't catch them very well on LRCAP. We have base forces that have upgraded to radar on the way, but only the MkI Eyeball is available locally at the moment. Of course other radar locations probably have the range to provide some warning to Tsuyung.

3rd Commando Bde is also almost 1/3 air lifted into Tsuyung, which sadly diminishes the flow of supplies until completed.

A total of 4 supply hits by B-24 at Pegu. The CL bombardment of Moulmein seemed to achieve nothing but spoiling sleep.

A bombardment of Yap again did modest damage.

The invasion at Biak went in late in the day but still got all the troops ashore. While they have supply, they don't have enough but tomorrow plenty will unload before the first attack. I am slightly rushing that first attack just in case the IJN carrier force is tasked to react here. 3x fast BB will bombard, as will 2x CA.

Our subs got an AD in the Java Sea over night.

We got in a nice two or three battle ambush in the skies over Tsuyung. See the day's air losses below - hopefully they were the Empire's best pilots! Our troops below Kunming are being bombed into dust. Tomorrow two Allied divisions and the depleted Chinese units (two vital units are staying on the line) will swap places NE of Tsuyung. The combined force will then try to break through the Empire's first line.

Between the bombardment of Moulmein and B-24 strikes on Pegu we got 6 or 7 supply hits in Burma. Are those efforts making a difference?

The attack at Babeldaob went well and the (recon of) enemy troop count went down by a couple of thousand. Same action tomorrow; mind you they are attacking without air or naval support now. The attack at Biak also went well.

We lost a sub and had another damaged enough to be recalled from patrol. Both were in the South China Sea near Borneo / Malaya / Sumatra. In return our naval search and surface ASW missions reported hitting a number of IJN subs in the Babeldaob area.

A nice rout of Sallys over Tsuyung, with 10 taken and the air strike turned away. The Empire has shifted some of its bombing from the troops below Kunming to those at Kunming and the base there.

Our B-24 strikes on Pegu netted 6 supply hits. At sea, CL Caradoc and DD Rotherham are too relaxed, sauntering in to bombard Moulmein, and were attacked twice by large groups of Nicks. Luckily no hits, but they will be told to burn some oil! Instead of proceeding to Moulmein they will steam into Tavoy and attack targets of opportunity seen there (2x AP and 1x E). CA Cornwall and her escort are ordered to hit Moulmein tonight.

Naval bombardments of Yap and Biak went well, as did the air strikes on Biak. A group of Bettys attempted to hit our troops at Biak but wide-ranging CAP from the CVEs made short work of them. Another day off for the troops on Biak.

It looks like 2 enemy units remain at Babeldaob as several were wiped out today.

The base at Tsuyung is completely repaired and the 3rd Commando Bde has finished airlifting in, so now that transport capacity will go back to hauling supplies. The attack NE of Tsuyung went fair. SW of Toungoo we've started taking more casualties from counter-battery fire. Add to that, one of our artillery units has been almost wiped out, all of them have elevated disruption, and our other units are not as low in disruption as I want them before the next attack. The artillery bombardments will stand down until the next attack, which will be in 6 or 7 days. The two additional armoured units have changed to start mode and are about to RD+ move to Magwe, then RR to Toungoo, then get to the front.

The AP at Tavoy astutely pulled anchor and moved out before the RN could find them. They appear to have moved to Mergui, and there is another convoy sighted 3 hexes WSW of Mergui (1x PB, 1x xAK) The Moulmein bombardment went off quite well, then the TF evaded a sub attack, and was ably defended from an aerial strike.

A great deal more supply made it to the front line troops NE of Tsuyung, possibly due to the air lift of 3rd Commando having been completed. So, instead of pulling back that weaker Chinese unit, they have been ordered to stop movement. An attack will be set as soon as the disruption of the troops is low enough (11th East African Div is 18% and the weaker 35th Chinese Corps is 45%).

SE of Tsuyung, an Imperial unit has (finally) moved onto the road, and will be attacked at once. Enemy strength unknown...

CA Suffolk achieved one supply hit plus other damage at Moulmein. The B-24 groups made no supply hits, but P-27 and Corsair pilots swatted Imperial fighters like flies. There were still enough of them left over the enemy troops near Toungoo to knock down some of the low-experience British 4EB striking there. That AP convoy is back at Tavoy and it will be at least two days before we have warships in a jump off position to make a run at them. In the meantime our subs will keep trying.

The Burmese rifle squads of the 2nd Burma Bde have been watching over a trapped Imperial regiment near Lashio. Today they showed themselves equal to the task. They'll wait for a Bn to reinforce them before commencing their own attacks.

The troops NE of Tsuyung will attack tomorrow even though one unit still needs rest. What looks like a regiment has now arrived at Tsuyung, and they will be attacked as soon as supply allows. In other words, it does not so allow right now. Supply in Kunming is even worse, with 9th Australian Division out completely. Ramree Island has been handling so much supply that even the crocodiles have been put to work.

CL Emerald and her escort played rope a dope at Moulmein after a very blase bombardment. I mistakenly left the TF ordered to 'Remain on Station' and that they did, through Betty and Nick raids without taking a single hit! Two supply hits made by the B-24 groups on Pegu. The isolated Imperial Bde near Lashio attacked again and lost more of its strength. I'll let them banzai to their own destruction.

B-24s from Darwin hit the port at Ambon in response to recon of two support ships there, the idea being to make it unfriendly for the IJN to operate combat forces in the area.

Three P-38 groups also out of Darwin swept Dili, making almost a clear path for various bombers to hit a convoy there. Bombardment of Yap continued with good results. It's practice for our ships' crews and costs the Empire supply and some planes, as well as ground assets destroyed. Prince William has remained with her CVE task force, which is heading to Manus to replenish. There are also tankers and oilers heading there as all fuel has been drained. There is not a general fuel shortage in the theater, it's just that fuel is being stockpiled at Truk in anticipation of the Marianas invasions about to begin.
