The IJN is still a force. This is not all fun and games for the Allies. It looks like Lowpe will use some of the same tactics he's been employing in his other game of the same period; head bombardments and fully disclosed intimidation with the KB.

Hue is now invested, but can these troops duck the hail of incoming shells long enough to engage the defenders and take the base?

Wow [8D]

There is a consistent theme in this interesting game.

An outside player assumes much - given the sudden and unexpected windfalls of Soviet forces and territories maintained at this early date.

I was still forgetting about - underestimating - the resources IJN has; albeit your honorable enemy

1) must be suffering from fuel deprivation somewhat...
2) doesn't need as much fuel because his SLOC are dramatically shortened and..
3) what has to give is R&D on newer planes and industry (??)

However in late 42 - the Allied Commander still lack the "quality" Carrier Planes (for example) to try to mess with a task force like this....

Back off - endure it - threaten somewhere else ? I guess ?
Flood the IJN Capital Ships with subs and deal with cripples that split off! Seems to be working, although the poor USN torps drag out the process!

I am surprised at how well the Chinese are doing, even with some help from other Allies. Did you change commanders or doing anything else to make the Chinese more effective?

Yes to the subs. They're getting some periodic hits, but that's all I need right now.

The Chinese just need supply and some air balance. In the North though they have Soviet arty. [:)]

So . . . are the units reptiles now?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

On the 15th the Japanese send the IJN into Cam Ran Bay, but no bombardment happens. They do hit the minefields, and Kongo and Aoba take a hit. I'll send the subs in to see if they can add to the damage.

Bering Island is also invaded in the North with no sign of any IJN opposition. It should fall very soon along with Medny. This will effectively end the challenge in the North from the Japanese, and they'll have to hunker down to protect the Kuriles. I'll be going elsewhere though! [;)]

The first attack a Bering goes well. The island base should fall soon with it's entire garrison. Medny is invaded and with the regiment coming next, that base should fall easily as well.

Some tanks sneak behind to Vinh and bypass Hue. They'll likely take the base soon and move on Hanoi. Getting this vector open to China to turn the firehose of supply on is the number one priority now.

A busy day all around the map. A few very interesting air battles and some signifiant breakthroughs on the ground.

Migs tussled with Tojos up in Manchuria, and the sweeping Migs got the better of it by about 2:1. This is the first time we’ve had big fur balls with Migs and 2nd gen IJA planes. The Migs still look good in 42.

This was also the first real test of the IL-2. They came in low and did their job well, ducking a bit of CAP and getting good hits on the troops. I’ll look forward to more of that since this is now the most plentiful Soviet bomber, and the most durable.

Down in China the air battles heated up over Kanshien where the Chinese are sieging the base. The Japanese cleared most of the CAP, but just enough was left to disturb and down about 10 Sallys bombing troops. They did get through, but couldn’t do enough as the Chinese take the base with heavy IJA losses. This opens a good path for our troops to the SE. Chengting troops are now in place and in spite of the tough bombardment results I’ll try for the base soon.

In Indochina the armor captures Vinh, isolating the entire Hue garrison and opening a road to Hanoi. They will move forward immediately, letting a Punjab battalion move in from the rear to secure the base. There should be one more Viet Min brigade and I’ll bet it’s at Hanoi.

On the naval front in the South China Sea an oddly placed IJN cruiser force is nearing Borneo. I’ve been sending surface combat forces to bombard bases there hoping to catch it but it’s hanging offshore. Is this some injured ships from the mine hits seeking the closest port?

Bering Island also falls to Allied troops.

Here is a look at China now. Action all over, but I'm happy to take it slowly until supply really starts to flow in fully. Right now Chungking is at about 25k, but units are able to fill out and I can build some airfields.

This is Manchuria. Lots of manoeuvring and tank envelopments. air power is having less of an effect for both sides as neither seems to want to commit for fear of losing lots of bombers to a surprise LR CAP.

Good progress made in several contested hexes in China and in Indochina. Hue should fall soon, and at the hex near Kalgan bombardments with the Soviet Katyushas are kicking some butt.

In a fun CAP defence a combined Allied set of Chinese, American and RAF fighters beat down three days of sweeps against Kweilin.

Medny gets a few more troops and will fall soon.

The Japanese have been beginning to bomb Soviet troops heavily around threatened Harbin. Our forces are only a day or two from investing and attacking the city, and the units helping in the envelopment are taking some losses, but I'll try to catch some of these massive strikes as well with CAP from Tsitsahar.

On the 20th naval search shows the IJN cruiser force nearing Borneo again. Several TFs sortie including BBs NC and WA. Could be some fireworks! [:)]

A very active turn as the IJN is caught near Miri. CA Suzuya and CL Tenryu with five DD meets our BBs first and the IJN gets the better of it. The NC takes a fish and will need some yard time. Fortunately the waves of Allied ships wear down these interlopers, and in the end a strong and expereinced TF with four CL takes out Suzuya after pounding Brunei with a bombardment to keep the air strikes at bay. Another reduction in IJN capacity.

The KB is spotted moving in near the PI. Was this a trap? All Allied TFs will move back under CAP and toward Singers.

On the ground some big battles result in Allied advances. Hue is about to fall in Indochina. Up in North China Chengting is teetering as well, and this will result in a massive breakthrough into the plains, not to mention a lot of wrecked IJA units.

More pain for the IJN as CL Tenryu takes hits from Kingfishers on their retreat. Not much else going on in the air or on the seas, but significant advances in land battles. Hue falls, and IJA troops retreat into the jungles, leaving the rail open to send troops racing forward toward Hanoi.

Chengting takes a another step toward Allied control but the Chinese take heavy disablements as well. Still, this is worth some pain. The Japanese are walking some troops in to reinforce, but I'll send my weaker armoured division out to block that bedside and stall their advance, even though it may take a shot from a couple of divisions that look to be there.

Finally, Medny Island falls to complete the Aleutian campaign.

Armor pushes toward Hanoi.

The bombardments near Kalgan have continued to be strong. Japanese troops did have a 150AV advantage here when these began, and now their AV is less than the Allied troops. Go arty!

On the 24th I tried a long awaited DA at Kluong. These are the troops pushed back from Singers that have been holed up here for many months. Out of supply and diminishing in numbers, they can't hold and the Allies should gain the base soon.

Here is a map of some of the manoeuvres and changes in Manchuria. The IJA was threatened with retreating or being encircled at Tsitsihar, and they chose to fall back this time. Soviet forces will now move to threaten Harbin, then Mutankiang, hoping to encircle yet more IJA troops in forward holding hexes, and then to release more Soviet troops from these positions into central Manchuria. Already the rail is linked and reserves are being sent from Vladivostok to garrison recently captured bases.

On the Western part of this map in Southern Mongolia, complex manoeuvres are taking place to isolate a tank division at Linshi while threatening the nearby base to the West.

Teh 25th is quiet other than forgetting to turn off B-24s hitting Brunei and having them intercepted by the KB, which had just moved in. On the morning of the 26th the Hiyo pays a price though, taking one torpedo from S-44.

The Japanese take a chance I kept my Megs away from Vladivoskok after sweeping yesterday. Unfortunately, I had. Still, the little obsolete Soviet I-16s put up a fight downing a good number of A6M3 before Tojos swooped in to put an end to the fun.

CAP at Tatung jumped all over a strike of Oscar escorted Sallys, downing nearly an entire group of Oscars, but the bombers did get through. Not much damage on the base though.

The biggest news is the fall of Changting. This releases about 4k AV into the plains and should allow Chinese and Russian forces to link up to the Chinese armies South of Sian, and in time, the supply lines moving from the central plains on down.

The Japanese haven't tried for many of the forward airbases, and when they have, have largely been rebuffed. I'm surprised at how well these ragtags groups of fighters are defending Allied territory.

Hiyo takes a fish, and Kaga had taken one not too long ago as well. That's two slower CVs now potentially slowed even more, which could lead to more success for Allied subs. I'll continue to send in the dogs.

Armor? I thought you were British! [:D]

Very well done in China. You have shown how maneuver and persistent assault can smash IJA strongpoints and win big. I have had use of the Russians before but never advanced as fast as you have done - masterful! Thanks for bringing us all the action!

Using the Soviets at this point in the war is ... different. Their troops are very good, and some of the devices top notch, like the katyushas and big siege guns, plus the gaggles of 15cm arty.

The tanks now are VERY fragile though, and there aren't many replacements. Also, there aren't many excess engineer or base force units, so the collaboration with the Chinese has been helpful.

I hadn't realised how vulnerable the IJA can be in China. There are a lot of areas to defend, and if the Chinese are rested, units brought to full strength, and if the first breakthroughs go well, the IJA can really end up on the back foot. The Chinese can invest strongpoints in good defensive territory and then go around in force.

That reminds me of a joke about an englishman living in Portugal. After ten years there none of the locals learned english and so he complains about having nobody to talk to. [:D]

On the 27th the IJAAF continues to attack Tatung. I think he may have accidentally left some bombers on here. With no escort they're crushed and the Allied pilots accumulate good exp and kills.

The Soviet tanks blocking reinforcing IJA units near Chengting paid the price today, getting kicked back with huge losses by two IJA IDs. I'll aim now to envelop those divisions by moving down the tray road SW from Chengting.

In a bloody battle on Malaya, Kluong is finally captured. Allied units are worn out, and these will take some time off in Singers while others move in to clean up the remaining IJA units.

Near Kukong the IJA pulls back some divisions that were in that base to defend the enveloping move of some Chinese Corps. We try a DA which gets a 1:2 with heavy disablements. It's a setback, as it'll be a month or so before these are back to good health, but more are coming up fro the rear and will try to leapfrog around to the hex behind near Canton, while another army is moving on Wuchang from Kwellin.
