With respect to the Korea Strait,

The shortest distance between Busan, South Korea, and the Tsushima Island is about 50 km, as is the shortest distance from Tsushima to Iki Island, Japan.

So you would have to sail within 25 km of land to transit the Korea Strait. That would bring you within range of large coastal artillery.
