It will be several weeks as all the permits and permissions are arranged and installation can start. It's quite a significant investment and it will be a long time before the costs are covered by the savings on the electric bill. Knowing that we have no intention of ever moving allows us to even consider such a long term investment. For the first couple of years the payments will be just a little more than our average electric bills, but the electric rates will continue to increase year to year while our payments remain constant.

I'm looking forward to two big benefits from the system. Of course saving on the electric bill (we will effectively have none) is a big factor. The second is adding the battery system. We have been here 6 months and never had the power go out other than blinking for a couple of seconds. But, should it ever go out for a longer period of time we lose not only our electricity but our water and septic capability as they both have electric powered pumps. With the battery system added, which was a significant addition to the overall cost, we will be able to stay in the house if there is a longer term outage. Having that piece of mind was one of the bigger factors in considering solar in the first place. 8-)
Sounds awesome. Especially with the added battery capacity.

What is the expected life-time for the solar panels? And for the battery? Will there be any additional fire-proofing, or fire-safety, with the added batteries?
Good questions, Orm! The panels are under warranty for 30 years with an effective lifespan at least 10-20 years beyond that. Many panels installed in the 70's and 80's are still producing electricity today and new panels are more efficient and keep their production capacity longer, so I expect them to long outlive us.

The battery system is under warranty for 10 years and I would hope to get at least another 5-10 years of efficient and effective use out of it. Battery tech is improving at a rapid pace these days, with a high demand pushing prices higher and leading to a large amount of R&D investment. I'm quite sure that when it's time to replace this one in 15-20+ years the options will be much more efficient.

I haven't heard of any fire issues with home battery systems, unlike car battery systems, but I'm sure there is some small chance. Ours will be installed in the garage which already has some added fire barrier protection from the rest of the house.

Splendid that the warranty is that long. Check to see if there is some special conditions for it to be valid all those years.

My main concern with fire is not really that the batteries may catch fire, but rather that any other fire in the battery area may cause additional hazards because of the battery being there. Toxic fumes perhaps? Or the fire tougher to put out? And so on. So I am glad to hear that they install some fore protection along with the battery installation. :)

Soon you are good to go for any zombie infestations of the area.
