News reported earlier that the plane was piloted by a freedom fighter that was mistakenly shot down by the rebels.  The pilot they said deliberately piloted the plane to crash where he did because it was sparsely populated.  The video doesn't have one bit of controlled flight from what I see.

Greg

Probably one of the Libyan pilots who defected early doors. Although I like the idea of a shopkeeper or shepherd finding a MiG, starting it and flying it around for a bit [:D]

You mean "swing-wing", not "swept-wing", Leo. And the Mirage has the "hooks" in the leading edge too. It's not a MiG.

Anyway, the Pentagon's Name-That-Operation computer has struck again: Odyssey Dawn????

What does that mean?[&:][&:]
I like it. I prefer the random OP name generator to "Operation EAGLE XXXXX" or "Operation FREEDOM XXXXX". "Storm"; "Desert" and "Shield" have been overworked too.

Hi all,

It was not Mirage F1... it was MiG-23... believe me... [;)]

I thought so as well at first, Leo.

It is MiG-23... the Mirage F1 has shorter wings (and also observe the wing's leading edge with protrusion - the MiG-23 has it because it is swept-wing aircraft)...

Is it just me or is the nose forward of the cockpit longer on the MiG too? Again-that seems to jibe with the picture.

Yep... brain-fart typo... "swing wing"... [8D]

But it is MiG-23!

Just look at the wing of the burning aircrfat:

#1
The thickness of the wing is just like MiG-23 and not Mirage F1

#2
Look at the size of the wing itself in comparison to the tail - is just like MiG-23 and not Mirage F1

Also the "hook" I mention is the the leading edge slats (all aircraft have it) - I am talking about place whee swing-wing rotates!

There's not one square centimeter of Libya that's worth one drop of European or American blood. So no, Hortlund, (you stuck-up, holier-than-thou git) I don't care.

It seems our beloved over-acting president decided the contrary, willing to show his muscles and what he has in the pants; Sure he is trying to make us forget that he was a bit late to react about Tunisia .

I hate governement of all kind, of all country. It seem there exist NO political guys able to be reliable...

Look on the bright side Eric... at least your country has a truly gorgeous first lady! Our country hasn't had one of those since 1963.

It means that one of our units has just become lost and started a multi-year adventure in the attempt to find their way home. [:'(]

Second, i find her very hypocrite (hope it is the same word in english , to be understand)
Third, this does not save Policy.

Sorry Brad, nothing againts you.

I would be less and less surprised if the World ended in 2012 , i have absolutely no more hope in the human kind, on any subject....

Libyan cease fire called.  This time they really, really mean it.  Honestly, no crossed fingers or take-backs.

Yep...

P.S.
BTW, one tidbit... earlier this evening I was watching "Sky News HD" and they were reporting from Tripoli. They saw some AAA firing randomly into the sky (tracers over night sky) and concluded that Libya still has strong Air Defense system in place... oh my... who pays those reporters / commentators.... Civilians.

They have a different opinion of strong defences and heavy combat. I daresay that those of you out there with infantry training have a different opinion to mine of those things as well.

Well, if somebody is pointed a twin-barrel 23mm anti-aircraft gun at me, then I'd call that a pretty strong opponent...[:D]
