RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
The most active theater is still Java, with our armored group closed up to Batavia and the infantry following behind.

Looks like the American carriers are back. Either trying to threaten our light forces in the Solomon Sea or escorting a convoy to PM (or both). Our fleet is still strung out between Palau and Truk, so if there is a battle, it will be between our Naval Air units and the enemy fleet and air. We have been moving more planes over and so are not as weak as we have been.

Yup, the battle has started. We're still in it. On the first day we hit Port Moresby with a big raid from Rabaul and caught a few B-26s on the ground. Also our two Betty/Nell air units at Lae hit the USN CV TF to the South of PM and damaged the Yorktown. [:)] These two Betty/Nell groups are the best we have, both are (uh were) EXP=88. But the fighter battle was pretty bloody our Ominato groups lost 15 of their best pee-lohs. [:(]

And finally the actual air losses.
Overall - looking towards our ability to continue tomorrow. Most of the air units are in reasonable shape, fatigue 0-20 ... and morale 50+ ... of course a few are lower, we'll probably rest them. But both Lae and Rabaul have HQs so the planes will probably fly regardless. Also, there are a few new air units that are ready to jump in.

OMG - REALLY HUGE AIR BATTLES AROUND PORT MORSEBY.
Our Betty/Nells at Rabaul let the resupply convoy in to PM, but pounded the airfield and caught a pile of planes on the ground. Meanwhile the sweep missions from Lae and Admiralties had weakened the Allied CAP to the point where the Rabaul escort finished it off. Oh, and the Betty/Nells from Lae finished off the Yorktown.
We had two Betty units from Rabul fail to fly due to Morale and 2 fresh Sally units at Lae fail to fly, due to reasons unknown. Fatigue is averaging around 20 for the air units in the area. Moral is ranging between 40 and 90. HQs are helping us fly, though flying with high fatigue and low moral means you don't accomplish much and we're reaching that point. Fortunately we hope the Allied losses mean they are as well.

Here are the actual air losses. I'll let them speak for themselves. Note that most of the Allied losses were on the ground, the airfield at Moresby was already heavily damaged and got more so this turn.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
A few thoughts on Strategy.
Naval Strength: For those readers who are following this AAR, you will recall that the Sara and Lexington were heavily damaged in a January 1942 raid on Rabaul. I'd estimate that they will be out of action until early Summer 1942. This left the USN with 3 CVs (Enterprise, Yorktown, Hornet) until Wasp shows up, also in the summer. The current actions around PM have resulted in Yorktown being sunk, thus leaving the USN with 2 CVs. Now the Brits have several carriers, I'm not going to bring up the game on the Allied side and look it up, but maybe 2-4 though their air groups are small and their planes are not first line. So let's say the Allies now have 4 CV equivalents. The Japanese still have 6 real CVs with 6 small carriers (and 2 more arriving shortly). So call this 9-10 CV equivalents. Thus naval superiority is now at the point where we can start thinking about splitting up the carriers. As far as BBs are concerned. It is hard to tell. The USN BBs were not hard hit in the Pearl strike - and no BBs have been sunk on either side, though we did get a couple of torpedo hits on one of the R's at Palembang a while back. I'd roughly estimate that BB strength right now is about even, with slight edge maybe to the Allies. We still have Mutsu in the yard for a while, our other 9 BBs are on ops. Yam/Mus will not be around for a while. We've had to delay their construction a bit to make room for higher priorities, but we will finish them by late summer '42.
Air Strength: Well, no matter what happens, the Allies only get stronger and the Japanese only get weaker. In the New Britain area we've concentrated 90% of the Betty/Nell force and they are still in pretty good shape. The Zeros on the other hand are getting beat up a bit. Most groups are still in the 70s, but some are dipping into the 60s and a couple will be in the 40-50s after we fill them back up. So some serious training is on the horizon. On the other hand the IJA fighter force is in good shape and improving. We have about half the groups either at or approaching 80 and the other half solidly in the 70s. Only a very few groups are in the 50s and 60s. So once the Tony's show up, the (land based) Zeros can be relieved for most purposes other than long range escort. And at least they won't be required to be the primary air superiority fighters as they are approaching the point of being unable to do that anyway. But fortunately, Allied fighter production rates are low enough and exps are low enough that hopefully we can even fight them with EXP 50 groups and not get toasted. But we have to try to hold out with the Zeros until the Tony's arrive, so that is the challenge.
Ground Units: With the campaign in DEI winding down and the P.I. (hopefully) at least under control. We now shortly have some freed up divisions. Possible targets include Ceylon, Perth, Port Moresby, Noumea, and the Polynesian Islands. We will go after the Western Aluetians in any case. We are sending the 5ID to Burma and may consider sending a second division - to give a total of 4 (Mytchina, Lashio, Akyab and Mandalay) with 2 IMB as well.
Allied Potentials: With the IJN having 12, soon to be 14 carriers to the Allied, 5-6 (counting little ones). Any Allied attack without strong LBA support will probably not succeed. One exception is Northern Oz, where they can attack down the rail lines. We will expect continued air attacks in Burma. Allied build ups in the Eastern Aleutians are also indicated. And there is no reason why the Allies can't build up in Polynesia. But we are now not as worried about a coup against the Marshalls, in fact, we will now consider sending some reinforcements here, to enable us to generate enough delay, in the event of an invasion to possibly get KB there before some of the key Atolls might fall. But if one does fall, we now might still have the strength to take it back, with heavy losses for the Allies.
Well, anyway, things might get even more interesting in mid-42 than I thought they would, primarily due to unexpected Allied weakness in Naval strength. I'd expect their air strength to rebound pretty quickly however.

If you have to make a choice, the one I would go for is the conquest of Noumea and the Polynesian Islands up to and including Canton Island. First, it would create a buffer zone for the eventual counter-offensive. Second, it would delay it as the islands are far enough apart that only heavy bombers may be able to assist an invasion and they would still need CV's to cover it. Third, it would make it hazardous to supply and build up Australia/New Zealand and allow CV/CVL raids into those shipping lanes (it's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to RHS level 7 to be able to come to Australia from the west).[:D]
I have posted on both AAR's and cautioned him about the pitfall of trying too hard to keep PM heavily reinforced due to the Zero and Nell/Betty menace. [:-] [:-]

i would go for PM. Slowly but surely you'll lose control of the skies above PM, then next thing you know, B17's will be raining death and destruction down upon Lae and Rabual. At least with PM in your hands, you can delay that obvious avenue of advance for the allies

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Thanks NY and K.
(1) Knowing my methodical style of play, I fear I will not be moving fast enough to conquer the world [:D] ... after all, from my perspective, much of what I've been able to accomplish in the New Britain/Papua area is due to moving in lots of engineers and supply more so than the airplanes, they were just the tip of the bayonet! But given the unplanned (though temporary) carrier superiority we have, clearly some activity is called for.
(2) As to PM, well I'm not sure having Moses focus on the obvious anvenue isn't a good idea. I'm strong in New Britain Papua than in most if not all of the other possible routes (at this point) and this is also about the farthest from my sensitive areas. I'd rather NOT have him retake Northern Oz and threaten Timor/SRA.
=== I haven't posted for a while because to be honest not much is happening right now.
(A) KB is refitting at Truk. I want to get at least the CV/BB down to sys=8 so that when we do go out, we'll stay "green" for a least a couple of days [:D].
(B) Also we need to immediately move 200k fuel down to Truk, KB and its train guzzle a whoooole lotta gaz. This is happening.
(C) In the SRA there are still a lot of little spots that need to be captured. These ops are in process, but several major units are resting and prepping for possible future ops.
(D) We got kicked out of Clark the third time despite bringing in yet another division (we have 6 Division Equivalents on Luzon now and still not enough). We'll be trying again soon. Hopefully one day, his supply will run low.
(E) In China, Moses is moving some telephone poles around, but he hasn't attacked any of our cities yet. In the mean time, we continue to train up our pilots.
(F) We are moving engineers and supplies into forward areas to facilitate a build up that is flexible. We will then be able to decide where we are going, when the time comes, but keeping some options open for now.
=== I'll publish full monthly reports when we get to the end of March. Hopefully by then we'll have something in the works.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
I would go for New Caledonia rather than PM. In all my PBEMs as Japanese I was able to keep PM surpressed very long (as long as I lost south New Guinea and Rabaul). And I didn´t lose South Guinea and Rabaul because I didn´t take PM before. I always have some Helens or Sallies on a big airfield at Lae, coupled with Zeroes for escort and some Betties for naval strikes and fighters, dive bombers and torpedoe bombers at Buna just two hexes from PM. Once the airfield and port is damaged (send twice some battlewaggons after good recon and there´s a lot of damage with a lot of engineers disrupted) it´s no problem to surpress it FOR YEARS.
First your opponent tries to send in supplies and more troops but after losing AK after another he will stop (at least that´s my experience). Then his troops will starve, there won´t be ANY AA fire after a short time (if you use your BBs, CAs first). This means you have a perfect training target for your fighters, Vals and Kates. With 100 planes of those types I achieve 100 airfield hits in just a couple of days which is enough to damage the airfield not just 100% but 200% [:D].
If you take PM then the above mentioned will probably happen to you once Cairns or Townsville airbase is big enough to place hundreds of 4e there. And you know what happens then: one or two succesful attacks and PM is closed - for the rest of the war... Then it´s not an Allied prison camp but a Japanese. Noumea can´t be closed by 4e if you also take Luganville and Efate. Though it´s hard to defend because of Koumac and the other base to the north, so noone will probably land direct in Noumea. I once decided to cut off Noumea with Ms Betty and Zero but that resulted in too much losses on my side if you can´t surpress Noumea completely which is very hard to do IMO if not impossible when talking about surpressing it until mid 43.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Well, we hit Moses' resources at Changsha in a "tit for tat" return for his bombing our resources in Burma.
Actually only our Kates (carrier units in training) and our Dive Bombers participated in the attack. All three units of Level bombers decided not to fly. So our reposte wasn't nearly as heavy as we had intended. But the point is probably made. In the short run, if we will engage in a "city bombing" campaign, we can probably hit him harder (in China) than he can hit us (in CBI). Of course, in the long run, he can hit us much harder everywhere, but I've made it clear that we are done hitting back, until he hits us again, so he has the trigger in his hands.
There seems to be an increase in the number of Allied subs being spotted in the Bew Britain area, so we may need to beef up ASW activities there.
We are sending another Brigade (the 56th from Java) to Luzon and preparing for a forth attempt to enter the Clark hex.

Well it is April 1st, 1942, time for monthly reports again. We will start off with the losses summary. Note we are still hovering beneath the 3:1 ratio in air to air kills. Though this is officially a "VPs do not count" game (per our house rules) we note that we climbed above a 2:1 ratio here.

Next we show the major (CA and above) surface ship losses. I have to say this is a very light loss list, for both sides, compared to my other games.

RE: jwilkerson(Jpn) Moses (Allies)
Next is subs lost. After starting out in a big hurry, the Allies have slowed down. We note that all three of our losses, were due to forgetting to move guys that we "tagged" as needing to be moved while watching the replay. We still don't have a good system to remember to move the subs. Well after they'll all glugged it won't matter, I guess we have that to look forward to [;)]
