RE: The rant goes on... Pzjg Hortlund vs Castor Troy

Post by Yakface »

All the naval movement orders remain the same, all that changes is thier execution.  So ships in one version will be in the same place during the out of sync view (they may be 1 hex out due to the way the random roll works for speeds not divisible by 5) but it's not possible for them to be 10 hexes away because the orders haven't changed.  Therefore if you bombed Hiryu at Koepang in your replay, it was there during the Japanese replay, but you just didn't spot it/attack it.

It's true the spottings aren't real, however the way detection levels work if you spotted it in the real (Japanese) replay, it will appear on your map during your order phase.  Actually if you are out of sync, the allies get two bites of the cherry - If you spot ships during the real replay but don't spot them during the fake (allied) replay they appear on the map.  Plus you can spot ships during their replay which they did not spot during the Japanese replay.  These won't appear during the map during the aliied order phase, but you will know they are there.  Not much of an advantage, but there you go.

how can it be then that I´ve seen ships being torped, bombed, sunk... a dozen hexes away from where they really were? [&:]

Without having seen it, I can't say (from what you are reporting, I don't think I'd be able to give a decent explanation even if I did see it).  However it wouldn't be down to sync.  Sync affects only the dice rolls (spotting, combat, air strikes etc), the starting positions and orders remain constant and as there is very little random element in movement, the post movement positions of units won't change much between versions.

we brought also the US carriers to the party, but once again we were only a couple of days late and Hortlund is really happy about that. We have now the British torp bombers and the US aircraft available to hurt anything that is within range. As mentioned before, KB (or better say incomplete KB as Kaga and Akagi seem to be missing) has already retired as well as the IJN battlewaggons so we attack an empty convoy but CA Kinugusa and CL Yura were included there to act as a bomb magnet against LBA attacks. Well, they acted good and Kinugusa can´t be penetrated by the 500lb bombs dropped by the SBDs and TBDs. That was amazing as I thought 500lb bombs would hurt CAs in Nikmod... Even CL Yura was hit by several 500lb bombs that couldn´t penetrate the belt armor. But in the end the British torp bombers made short process of the 2 cruisers! And we bag another half a dozen transports. [&o]

the sub misses...

I don´t know if I can consider my Koepang operation as a success as in the end I lost the base, seeing 2 Aus bgds, half a dozen base forces and 3 small Aus inf units surrender, all in all some 30.000 troops. And I lost BC Repulse to KB. I came late with my carriers to do real damage, the 2 cruisers and the dozen transports today is a consolation prize. My carriers are now 4 hexes South of Koepang and my recon told me that there are already some 200 aircraft at the base but the base should be HEAVILY damaged. It was at 100 port, 100 airbase and 80+ airfield dam when I lost it and perhaps my eng increased the airfield damage even more. Nevertheless Hortlund has flown in an armada of fighters and probably torpedoe bombers. I told him I would be amazed if his aircraft could take off such an airfield, I´m already amazed that they can land there. Nearly no op losses to the Japanese, WITP has something wrong here - try to land 200 aircraft at an airfield that is 80+ damaged... [8|]

So I had the choice to retire my carriers to Darwin (8 hexes) where we would have also 100+ land based fighters on Cap or stay in the Koepang area to either attack more shipping OR torch the Japanese aircraft on the ground if they can´t launch. I decided to attack the airfield! I guess this is a fault and I´m toast tomorrow but I really think it shouldn´t be possible to launch a strike from such an airfield. But probably we will see 100% of the aircraft launch in a perfectly coordinated strike... [8|]

A rough guess about the Japanese losses so far:

1 CA, 1 CL, a dozen+ DDs/APDs, some 20 transports and 50+ aircraft. If I also count the 30 Nells shot down over Darwin then it would be 80+ aircraft.

We lost some 30.000 men, BC Repulse, 40 aircraft and 1 sub. I would call that a real Allied disaster in the real war, as losing 30.000 men was devastating I think.

Japanese heavy cruiser Kinugasa was sunk by a combined strike of US and British carrier aircraft!!

Kinugasa (Cruiser, 1927-1942)
Kinugasa, an 8300-ton Aoba class heavy cruiser built at Kobe, Japan, was commissioned in September 1927. Her early service was as flagship of the Fifth Squadron (Sentai), and she operated for virtually her entire career with that unit and the Sixth and Seventh Squadrons. In 1928, she became the first Japanese combat ship to carry an aircraft catapult. Kinugasa served off China in 1928 and 1929 and on several occasions during the 1930s. Placed in reserve in September 1937, she was extensively modernized and did not recommission until the end of October 1940.

Kinugasa was assigned to the Sixth Squadron during the year leading up to the start of the Pacific War. In December 1941, the war's first month, she took part in the seizure of the American outposts at Guam and Wake. She participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 and in the heavy fighting to retake Guadalcanal later in the year. During the latter campaign, she took part in the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August, the Battle of Cape Esperance on 13 October and in the shelling of Guadalcanal's Henderson Field on 14 November 1942. While withdrawing on the morning after that bombardment, Kinugasa was sunk by planes based at Henderson Field and on the aircraft carrier Enterprise (CV-6).

In the same attack on a convoy off Dili also the Japanese light cruiser Yura was sunk!

Yura (Light Cruiser, 1923-1942)
Yura, a 5570-ton Nagara class light cruiser, was built at Sasebo, Japan. Commissioned March 1923, she served with cruiser squadrons and as a submarine squadron flagship during the years leading up to World War II, operating in Japanese home waters and frequently off China. In 1930 Yura served as a test platform for aircraft catapults installed in front of her bridge and, in 1933-34 received a rotating catapult amidships as well as a new mainmast to support an aircraft derrick. She took part in combat with the Chinese at Shanghai in the first part of 1932 and again during 1937-39 as Sino-Japanese hostilities burst into full-scale war.

In 1940, Yura and her subordinate submarines moved into the central Pacific as Japan extended her preparations against an increasingly possible war with the United States. The next year, they went to the South China area, from which they supported landings in Malaya, Borneo and Sarawak after the Pacific War began in December 1941. During the first four months of 1942, she operated off Indo-China, participated in anti-shipping operations off Singapore and in the Indian Ocean and supported the invasions of Java and Samatra. Yura, serving as a destroyer squadron flagship, helped screen the Midway Occupation Force during the Battle of Midway in early June.

Two months later, after Allied forces landed in the southern Solomon Islands to began the long and difficult Guadalcanal Campaign, Yura was sent to Truk to support the Japanese counterattack. She took part in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons on 24 August 1942 and was slightly damaged by U.S. B-17 bombers off Shortland Island on 25 September. When the Japanese prepared a major effort to retake Guadalcanal in mid-October, she covered reinforcement operations. On the 25th of that month, Yura was leading a group of destroyers toward Guadalcanal as an "attack unit" when she was hit by SBD bombers and seriously damaged. Her speed greatly reduced, she retreated for several hours and was then hit again and stopped. After her crew had been taken off, Yura was scuttled by her consorts' torpedos and gunfire.

now we know for sure that KB isn´t complete as some carriers are operating in the Pacific, raiding my shipping lanes. Hortlund has again luck on his side as this is the BEST possible hex he could have been in as exactly here he´s in 5 hexes range of 3 TFs whereas most of the Pacific is empty anyway... nothing serious though, we will lose the USMC raider btn with a couple of AKs and TKs...

Hortlund told me he would use his Allied carriers to guard his shipping lanes but I think they do far more damage where they are now, even more when I can be sure that KB would have massive problems taking on my carriers when KB isn´t complete and I have the British carriers also in the area.

We had the chance to sink 20+ ships at Koepang today as we moved in the carriers again, but guess what! Yes, of course the weather god is ONCE AGAIN Japanese. Both in the morning and the afternoon, my carriers were clouded! Only the carriers, not a single base in the area of the whole screen. ONLY my carriers had thunderstorms above... Thank you advanced weather effects... really advanced...

DD Express, Shell hits 3, on fire

we despatched our best ships from our carrier TFs to go in to Koepang but have to pay for it. We are surprised, a DD is shot to pieces, CA Indianapolis takes minor damage. Always amazing again how dangerous a TF of DDs alone can be, no matter what you send in, night naval battles in WITP mostly look like PT boat charges...

already thought we would have lost in this turn we manage to engage a second time, this time we surprise the Japanese but do no damage during the surprise. Then one DD is sunk with heavy damage to another. Looks like a draw now, slightly towards a victory of the Japanese, but the day isn´t over yet! right after the suicide of my TBDs the rest of the strike goes in finishing off the IJN DDs. No strike aircraft of the British CV TF took off. No problem, as those aren´t armored targets and bombs can sink them. It would have been super annoying against armored targets as a strike of nearly 200 aircraft would then have done nearly no damage. 6 IJN DDs lost today ramping up the DD losses for the Japanese to nearly 40. Hortlund said his DDs are worth nothing anyway as they suck as ASW platforms. He will rely on air ASW and APDs (of which he has perhaps 7 or 8 left). Serves my subs well, as I think that his DDs should be his number one ASW platform in the future.

we spotted this TF moving towards Timor from the North so we set a lot of bombers on nav attack. The result was that the TF wasn´t spotted at all in the morning, in the afternoon 60% of the bombers failed to locate the target and then 67 bombers attack sinking probably 2 medium sized APs. Hortlund completely forgot about this TF and if we would have attacked it with force both in the morning and the afternoon, the whole TF would have been gone with the loaded troops... oh well, the small achievements will lead to total victory... the bombers will stand down tomorrow as I´m sure there will be 50 angry Zeroes above the rest of the convoy... a sub will visit the place though...

Steve just told me he counted up all his ship losses. At the moment my intel shows 220 ships sunk, a dozen more will follow in the next days that are heavily damaged at the moment.

He said he lost something about 140 AKs/APs (mostly APs [:D]) and around 40 DDs! [X(] There are also 2 CAs and 6 CLs.

So far I´m really happy with his ship losses as my losses are at around 180, biggest loss was the tragedy about the loss of BC Repulse. Even though he will rely on air ASW I still think that losing 40 DDs at this stage of the war will be something he will feel in the future.

40 dds gone by 4/42 is pretty staggering.

Just for confirmation, your Hudson pilots suck. [;)]

I decided to send in a couple of British destroyers from Darwin as they could go in and out again to retire to Darwin within the turn. We mostly hit the APs that were in sinking conditions anyway but Meigen Maru is now dead also. An attack just to annoy the Japanese... [:D]

we spotted this supply convoy coming from the South going to Akyab and it seemed there wasn´t LRCAP the turn before as Akyab had a high number of fighters in the air. So we decided to risk our Marauder BG. Now I regret I haven´t set ALL my bombers on nav attack but we are still happy. An AK and a PG probably sunk with a couple more damaged. One B-26 was lost to ops.
