RE: Interesting ...

ORIGINAL: n01487477

Thanks John,
yeah it's "starting" to come together now.. Floyd first contacted me back in Nov '07, & I was lucky enough to jump on board, so you can see the development time...

I sympathise with the AE team, even though they have a bigger team, programming part-time, for the love of it ... well it's difficult because RL impinges and "computer time" as we all know, seems to usurp the laws of the "time-space" continuum. They probably are still living in May, or wishing it still was.

I'm glad they are taking their time, fixing the bugs and making it an amazing experience.

Lastly I hope Floyd doesn't mind me saying that although this has been very much a joint effort, he is responsible for putting down the foundation to most of the amazing stuff, I've just been happy to learn and be part of it. He's too modest to point this out ... just thought I would. Credit where credit's due!
(That suck-up should get him to work harder [:D] )

---Damian---

Thanks for the compliments. Your enthusiasm is what has powered me through to work hard on it. But I did show the last bit to my wife and she wasn't impressed enough to release me from household stuff to work more on the program. [;)]

More good things to come from AE and WitPTracker.

And now back to the show...
Delete the trackerdb.* files.
Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

Tjilitjap captured

Post by n01487477 »

21/3/42 - Tjilitjap captured

[*]Tjilitjap is captured (I had forgotten to set a bombardment), but all's good that ends well ...
[*]Amboina and Kendari are still bombarding until their disruption falls a bit more.
[*]Air war over Hengchow [S China] heats up with Zekes and Mig's/IL-2's dogfighting their little hearts out. It's playing out 1-1 losses, a real pyrrhic victory so far. Tomorrow there will be 72 zekes sweeping and 50+ escorting my Betty's. Overwhelming I hope will work.
[*]American LB out of Pearl Harbour hits DE Kuretake off Palmyra, she is badly crippled and will limp slowly back to Kwajalein.
[*]New Troops entered Singapore and the Fort crumbles to 3.
[*]Deliberate attack at Kuysyshevka reduced the fort to 3.
Japanese ground losses:
24115 casualties reported
Guns lost 517
Vehicles lost 40

Allied ground losses:
3068 casualties reported
Guns lost 162
[*]L-13 is hit by a H8K patrolling at Palmyra, she sinks straight away ... I like it!
[*]Troops are loaded for Manila, pity they are low experience, they will cut their teeth here. My troops start their march into Manila.

Henchow Air dual

Post by n01487477 »

22~23/3/42

Henchow ~ Sending 2 sweeps against the Russians, worked a treat ... Michael says the American judges gave it to the Allies ... I disagree somewhat. I thought they might question the age of my pilots, when they can't win??[:D]
1st sweep of 30 Zekes encountered the 8 I-16's & 15 MiG-3's, destroying 5 I-16's, one of my planes didn't make it home.
2nd sweep of 33 Zekes took on 15 Migs and 2 I-16's, 6 Migs and 1 I-16 in flames!
The coup de grâce
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 41
G3M2 Nell x 52
Ki-21-II Sally x 12

I-16 Type 24 x 2
MiG-3 x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 5 destroyed
Allied aircraft losses
I-16 Type 24: 3 destroyed
MiG-3: 3 destroyed, 1 damaged
Airbase hits 10
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 23

On the 23rd I stood down these planes and gave them a days grace. The Allies removed their planes from Henchow.

Elsewhere constant attacks on my TT's at Palmyra offloading troops and supplies, causing no damage at present. Amboina will have a shock attack tomorrow. Air combat in Russia about to be ramped up!

More troops heading Nth and Sth Pacific to bolster my troops and gains so far.

Hailar Shooting Stars

Post by n01487477 »

24~26/3/42

Celebes: In the days prior to the 26th, my forces were repositioning and getting ready for some assaults. Kendari and Amboina fell on the 24 and 25th respectively.
Philippines: My troops entered Manila from both sides simultaneously on the 24th, and I've been bombarding ever since.I'm waiting for the 2 extra Div that are coming before I make a full blown attack. They should arrive.
CentPac: Lost a small ML today returning from Palmyra. The base is now mined with 2k+. Palmyra now has 20K+supplies and engineers now digging in.
Java: Djokjakarta is taken with no response. Recon tells that Krajen, the next base in the string is heavily fortified and may take some time to fall. This is the first line of real defence. I have new troops arriving on Java in a few turns, but am really lacking a free Eng unit to help with the fortifications.
China & Aleutians: zip
Soviet Union: Left the best to last. Another deliberate attack on Kuysyshevka pays dividends. I'm waiting each time for my engineer units to have some AV before attacking and it is seeming to work better. Also my casualty rate is going down as each of these Forts fall, only 15K casualties today, compared to 30K at the beginning.

For the last few weeks the Allies have been attacking Hailar, training SB-2M's(LB), Mig's and I-16. I've had enough of this and decided a few days ago, to at least cut into his replacements. Training 2 * 48 Ki-109's (my small range fighter) and all the Zekes I could muster, I threw them in today. There were 200 fighters, but not all of them flew, due to the slight lack of Aviation support. Still got to smile a bit at the results. I'm building 10+ Zekes & 7 109's /day so I can do this for a little, but eventually I will have to withdraw them, but not until there are significant Allied losses.
Day Air attack on Hailar [Manchukuo] , at 63,22

Ki-109E Mike x 30

Allied aircraft

SB-2M x 118

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 26 destroyed, 17 damaged --> boo hiss to the Zero, thank goodness my Tojo is due soon.
Ki-109E Mike: 7 destroyed, 5 damaged --> not bad, I like this new fighter

Allied aircraft losses
I-16 Type 24: 38 destroyed [:D]
MiG-3: 3 destroyed, 4 damaged
R-12: 1 destroyed
SB-2M: 64 destroyed [&o]

Japanese ground losses:
18 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 2

28 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
2 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
9 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
26 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
27 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet

8 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
10 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
3 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
4 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
2 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
3 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
3 x MiG-3 bombing at 2000 feet
1 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
2 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
1 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
2 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
2 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet
1 x SB-2M bombing at 20000 feet

His Mig's were set to airfield attack, but there was little air combat with them. Also of not is that even though the airfield is hit hard, my numerous engineers here fix it overnight ...

What expect to encounter tomorrow when the Mig's are set properly, it will be a close battle ..

Rain Delay

Post by n01487477 »

27/3~29/3
I have been busy trying to work out some things for Tracker, so this update will be brief.

[*] Hailar air combat has been put on hold until the inclement weather abates...
[*] Singapore deliberate attack reduced the fort to 2. This increases my confidence in my new found skills of timing my deliberate attacks with LBA ground and waiting for my EngReg to get some AV.
[*] Rangoon Troops take a base Nth of Rangoon on their way to Mandalay.
[*] Parachute Troops being moved to Bangkok so that I can drop Nth of Mandalay.
[*] APD hits a mine at Canton Is.
[*] AK hits mine at Kendari.
[*] Troops at Upolo loaded for their attack on Pago Pago. Just waiting for a Bombardment before I send them.
[*] Operations around Palmyra nearing the end, Still some troops to drop at Christmas.
[*] Midway operation is gathering steam, will update soon. LBA taking a rest, from attacks here.
[*] Still no sign of the Americans ... except those damn subs. Is something coming or am I waiting until Christmas? Michael knows my CV's are around Kwajalein ... Is he going deep Sth or Nth or just waiting quietly and patiently and waiting for me to make a blunder ?

30/3/42 ~ Fortifications reduced at Kuysyshevka & Manila

Ground combat at Kuysyshevka [SIB] where I have 3:1 ratio of troops, has finally been reduced to Lvl 1. I'm still down about 1000 adjusted assault, but after Lvl 1, then the playing field will become at least a little more level.

Meanwhile on warmer ground at Manila
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 103460 troops, 1567 guns, 1039 vehicles, Assault Value = 2780
Defending force 56698 troops, 1284 guns, 403 vehicles, Assault Value = 2081

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Japanese max assault: 2614 - adjusted assault: 1195
Allied max defense: 2246 - adjusted defense: 8889 --> I hate Urban hexes![:@]

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 2) [:'(] --> engineers make the difference

Japanese ground losses:
7536 casualties reported
Guns lost 194
Vehicles lost 15

Allied ground losses:
454 casualties reported
Guns lost 18
Vehicles lost 1

The 2nd Div and the 59th Garrison Div has finally offloaded at San Fernando, I'm unsure yet whether to take Bataan first and then move them to Manila.

B-17E & B-17D's hit Palmyra and Rangoon above 32,000, I have no come back and at this altitude, although the damage is minimal, but accumulative, it is very frustrating as I watch the Allied LB gain in experience and I can do nothing about it.

The Air war is about to heat up ... just need some good weather & maybe some better airframes, but have to be "in for a penny, in for a pound"...and now, before it gets too far along.

ECONOMIC UPDATE FOR MARCH '42

You may note how low my HI is, this is Nemo mod, EA is a beautiful woman that needs to be stroked and wooed and cajoled into doing anything she doesn't want ...

Image
[*] Last Month
HI 13651(3480), so an increase of 400+
Supply 2769589, down 400K - with a note of concern
Resource 3962678, up 200K
Oil 4858628, up 200K
Fuel 2244094, up 100K

[*]Japan VP's 18888(16374) Allied 11388(11305)
SHIPS

I've got some HI issues, so have turned off some of my Merchant shipyards. CV Mushasi and CLAA Grisgby-saan is being accelerated for the expected naval encounter with the Americans.

Image

Air Frames
I'll go into more depth later in the month, suffice to say, I'm producing enough.

Image

Lcu's
These are my incoming for the month, essentially I'll have the PP's to move them out & maybe some of the backup.

Talking about the Forts reducing in Manila ...
Michael wrote:

He does not even get 1:7 odds, yet the forts are reduced. Why expend the supply to build them up when I seem to get minimum returns for my efforts.

Does anyone know if the issue of fort reduction needing to have certain odds reached before it happens has been changed for AE?? I'm not complaining about Damian's play, just the ground combat routine had me going "WTF?"

Sorry for the rant.

I wrote:

For the record I did have all my troops deliberately attacking & I have 3 Eng Rgt's ...

I do have a slightly different view, engineers historically were so valuable because they allowed the reduction of fortifications, digging tunnels and using mortars to reduce defensive positions. Otherwise I would never have been able to take Russian bases or ever take Manila. Fortifications should not mean immunity from attack and in a urban hex base this would mean that they can never be taken if defended correctly. Even when the fortifications at Manila are 0, I still will not be able to take this base without it running out of supply ... this is acceptable to me. Without engineers, I would have to shock ... so therefore, engineers are a golden commodity.
OK maybe a closer odd, but 1:1 would mean me having 800K troops etc, this seems a little ridiculous. And honestly, in my heart I believe the engineers should have this ability as they do so historically. I don;t think that the defender can have it both ways with terrain and fort advantages, without engineers having the chance to reduce this.

31/3/42 The Turn
Naval bombardment of Pago Pago [Samoa], at 96,113 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!
Allied aircraft losses
PBY-5 Catalina: 2 destroyed

39 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
CL Awata Maru, Shell hits 1
CL Asaka Maru
CL Akagi Maru, Shell hits 1
CL Aikoku Maru
CL Katori
CA Furutaka
CA Kinugasa, Shell hits 1
CA Chikuma
BB Ise
BB Mutsu
BB Hiei

Allied ground losses:
532 casualties reported
Guns lost 22
Vehicles lost 4

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 35

My troops should arrive tomorrow ... I couldn't get them in today, bit of a mistake, but should be ok.

[*] Air combat over Hengchow - the Allies put up a cap of 24 I-16 & 16 MiG-3's. A sweep of 38 zeros from Canton was ineffective with 1:1 losses.

My airfield attack coming from Taiwan:
Day Air attack on Hengchow [S China] , at 44,37

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 82
G3M2 Nell x 26
G4M1 Betty x 54
Ki-21-II Sally x 18

Allied aircraft
I-16 Type 24 x 15
MiG-3 x 14

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 6 destroyed
G3M2 Nell: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 4 damaged
Ki-21-II Sally: 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
I-16 Type 24: 17 destroyed
MiG-3: 10 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
12 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 11
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 37

This is a little surprising, I thought that the sweep would do more damage and it just reconfirms my mindset, which is suspicious of sweeps.

[*] Meiktila [Burma] is captured, now onto Mandalay after some recon and rest.

Fools Day.

Post by n01487477 »

1/4/42 ~ Kushyshevka falls in an April Fools prank.. painted broomsticks and spare helmets were left as defence...
Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 228958 troops, 2633 guns, 1462 vehicles, Assault Value = 5019
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0 --> roll sound of wind whistling across the prairies and tumble weeds rolling by

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0
Japanese max assault: 3218 - adjusted assault: 3378

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1 ---> This is the broomstick factor!
Japanese assault odds: 3378 to 1 (fort level 0) --> have you ever seen these odds before? [:D]

Not so far away at Hailar, my fly-boys were told at muster by a Jnr Lt. Bilco-san that they could have the day off. By the time their Commanders got wind of the rumour, there were only a few discarded hats on the parade ground and a stream of dust which vanished into the direction of town.

Hours later the sound of Russian fighters roused them from the many bars/places of ill-repute that had popped up in recent months, with just enough time to give them a hearty wave and raise their glasses in cheers as they passed overhead. The 200+ Russian pilots are deflated as they return empty handed into the dark storm clouds hanging low in the sky.

---------------------------------------

Memo to other players wishing to undertake a Russian adventure ... don't! Or if you do, do it better than I did it.

[*]I attacked Day 1, big mistake. Without enough time to position my forces correctly:-
[*]I failed to sink enough fleeing Soviet subs and DD's.
[*]I could not go up the middle at Blagovyshensk, thereby cutting off the Soviet troops. Or smart enough like Nemo to go from Mutankiang across toward Iman, cutting the troops at Vladivostok. And my Allied opponent is too smart for this anyway.
[*]I did not go for Borzya early enough, and could not without enough positioned there.
[*]It has meant that all my other incursions into the SRA / China / Burma / Java are understrength and behind an acceptable timetable. Singapore / Manila and Soerabaja are still to fall.
[*]The bug which affects this and other mods, which have Soviet Active from Day 1, reduces my ability to recon, disrupt the Soviet air force.
[*]It has released some of the best fighters onto the playing field. And these fighters (Mig 3)could take on the Japanese fighters in '43 or later and still be ok. The Soviet troops have good equipment too, some of the best.
[*] ... more I'll think of later ...

So here we are April Fools '42:
The positioning of my forces, and my attempt to continue to place pressure on this theatre. Dividing is never a good policy, and neither is attacking Russia, there are some pretty famous guys who failed to do this, but here we are. Playing catch up, I intend to switch the focus of my attacks now. Some Divs and Arm are going to be moved toward Hailar from my stack at Kuysysheka, the rest will threaten Skovorodino. It is almost the same number of hexes from Kuysyshevka to Borzya, either route, so the race is on.

{edit} And I would use ships but the treat of Soviet intervention leaves me cold ... damn the BUG! Apart from the fact that troops in this region cannot be loaded without setting them to another HQ, which I cannot afford anyway! And that includes air transport. I hope AE does something about this!

Post by n01487477 »

Don't know if any of you have seen the Ozzie movie "Strictly Ballroom", there is a scene where a judge is describing the "Pogo Pogo" as an in-out in-out movement ... well that is what is happening here.

30/3 ~ bombardment
31/3 ~ miscalculated rendezvous
1/4 ~ finally rendezvous with TT's to exchange CA's
2/4 ~ Landings & shock
1000 Gun shots but little damage. I got lucky here, 3 days of inaction could have cost me.
3/4 ~ Capture & removal

Now I start to eye Suva, the last big base in the line, will this be an Island too far? I expect at least a Div and some LB here. I'll need CVTF's, SCTF's and a load of troops, which I have available... I'll start recon operations soon, but this will give the Allies an indication so I want to leave it late.

I might even split KB, and co-ordinate it with a play on Midway. Why? Because I want to bring out those American CV's ... I need to engage them soon before I need to withdraw my CV's due to Sys damage. (I would bring them back together before I engaged ... I'm not that stupid!) Or maybe I should wait for CV Musashi in 42 days & some CLAA's that are being accelerated.

Hail..arrrrrrr ...

Post by n01487477 »

2/4 ~ 5/4/42
Hailar~ Since standing down my air force due to continuous Thunderstorms, I've been carved up and feeling much less smug. What a terrible couple of days, not disastrous as my pilots remain intact, I haven' lost one, but in two days I've lost 60+ aircraft.

On the 4th, I had all my fighters stand down again, primarily I do not have enough Aviation support here yet, I can't fly it in, grrr and it is taking forever even by rail. So with fatigue high, thunderstorms overhead, I took a stupid gamble. 26 planes lost on the combat report, many more when I check my air groups!

On the 5th, I set 180 to fly, 46 did, once again my fault, through mismanagement the much needed Aviation support is still 100 Miles away.
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 38
Ki-109E Mike x 8

Allied aircraft
MiG-3 x 102
R-12 x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zeke: 16 destroyed
Ki-109E Mike: 6 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
MiG-3: 11 destroyed, 1 damaged

I'm leaving them to CAP today, but if the results are poor, I will withdraw and fight when my airfield reaches 5 and I have more AS at Hailar. I have enough planes to replace my losses, but this is another post of what not to do ... And tomorrow may be worse, if those Migs are set to sweep instead of bomb! But I'm giving it one more for the road. At least those Mig's have a relatively low replacement rate of 45/mth.

In other news:
[*]Singapore hits Fort Lvl 1, I get a 2:1 and decide to Assault next turn, my troops are disrupted around 15%. Could this be close to the end? I dream it but disbelieve it.
[*]2 Div and an Eng Rgt are heading to Bataan Fortress.
[*]Allied LB over Burma are uncontested as they attack my ground forces converging on Mandalay.

Tracker new release 1.2

Post by n01487477 »

8~9/4/42 After a bit of a trip to Osaka and Kyoto for 5 days to recharge the ol' batteries, I'm feeling great and ready for work again ... well ready to be back in Pusan for a few more months.

The 8th and 9th, saw a failed attack on Manila and a bombardment of Olongapo/Bataan. Bataan will be deliberately attacked this turn while my troops at Manila are resting and bombarding. The air war has stabilized over the last two turns but this is due to the Allies making it easier for me to get my turns out before I left. The unlimited war will return, this next turn.

Just going to show off some Tracker new screens ...

Have a good week guys ... at least Floyd will be happy I'm not bugging him.

It was eerily quiet. I actually heard my wife when she was talking to me... [;)]

9/4/42 ~ Bataan falls quickly and quietly, I'm now free to naval bombardment of Manila, although I think that this is prone to risk.

My troops in Singapore are being given new orders and refreshing before being sent out. I've already loaded some to go to Rangoon and am prepping others to take Northern Sumatra and Java. While others will go toward Darwin and Broome. I'd really love to pull some into Southern China and take Pakkoi in a flanking manoeuvre, but I think the troops in Manila will have to be earmarked for this.

10/4/42 ~ Not a lot going on, I pushed back 3 Chinese Inf units at three separate locations which have being trying to skirt my bases in Central China.

Weather halts any operations over Hailar.

Troops are loaded at Canton Is, which will take a wide path toward Noumea. In a few days, I'll organise my CVTF's which will assist, and also get my Midway TF's organised. I'm going to try to use as many LSD's etc as possible to minimise the loss to LB based at Pearl. In prep for this my rally point is around Marcus Is.

13/4/42 ~ The war over Burma erupted today, the Allies finally decide to get out of bed and hit me hard on the ground. 4 different Lcu's are hit and at Toungoo [Burma], my 21 ki-109e's are outfought by some 55 VB Spitfires. I lose 9 planes, all the pilots parachute out and are fine, 2 spitfires are destroyed. They are later examined by the ground crew mechanics, who inform command that they are a beautiful machine ... Duh!

I withdraw my 109's back to Rangoon and realise that only massed forces are going to help me in this theatre, as well as the new Tojo's 1.5 months away. Will do some recon and think about what to do here... I always think that in a war of attrition, the Japanese are the loser especially in Burma ... or should I take Nemo's tack and try to win big ?

Otherwise hit Midway again, for little damage, and not all my planes are flying from Wake Is. So I will have to check my commanders, I know I have enough Aviation support and supplies and the airfield is at 4 and building.

The cowardly Americans are still hitting Palmyra from 33,000 ...
