The Great WitP Conundrum

Post by Canoerebel »

Dear Diary,

On day 24 of my celibacy, I am contemplating the Great WitP Conundrum.

The Great Conundrum is this:  WitP is a massively detailed game that takes a tremendous amount of time.  I order to avoid becoming addicted to the game, it is best if the player has self-control and limits the amount of game time...

...On the other hand, WitP is a re-creation of a five year war that is played in one-day increments.  If you exercise self-control and play in moderation, you'll NEVER finish the game.  Well, you might in four or five years, but that's essentially never.

So it's a self-defeating proposition:  play as rapidly as possible to finish the game in a decent interval [like, maybe 1.5 years  [8|]] and you'll be obsessed and the rest of your life totally out of whack.

There is no solution to the conundrum.  The invenetors of War in the Pacific have discovered what happens when an immoveable object meets an irresistable force - nothing!

I'm glad, after reading all this, that I'm not the only one that refers to the 'turn' as a perfectly meangingful statement!

Dan,

Your next step in your 12 step program may be to restrict how many post you can make per day on this board. [;)]

Okay, but I've been here three years longer than you and have 1,000 less posts.

[:D]
beer/bars helps you do that

What is wrong with taking several years to play out the whole campaign? Chez and I are essentially playing WW2 in real time...

Brad, it may be one of those "different strokes for different folks" kinds of things, but the idea of playing real time (or essentially real time) doesn't appeal to me.

On a separate note, we've had one of Dooley's Junkyard Dawgs speaking at our church the past few days.  He was a walk on from Pennsylvania, of all places, and got a sack of the Florida quarterback in the '82 game (boy do I remember that one).  It's been fun talking "old times."

Dan, I have so little free time at this time of the year, and usually take so long with each turn (I like to anguish over the map every day), that it turns out I can only process one turn each day. Sometimes when the two of us have a day off we can get a couple of turns done in a day (our record was four turns once). But I love the game so much that only playing one turn a day works out very well for me... and it does make me feel a little like Adm Nimitz (worrying overnight about the orders I've given my troops!).

I'm jealous of you getting to chat with one of the old Dawgs... BTW: wasn't Charlie Trippi from Pennsylvania as well?

There's a forum SECFanatics that I spend nearly as much time on as this one. It helps keep me abreast of what's happening in Georgia sports - which is difficult out here on the left coast.

Dear Diary,

On day 27 of my celibacy, I was brousing the "Cry Havoc" thread under the AE forum when I noticed Erik Rutins' announcement that the AE manual is at the printer.  Obviously, you don't print the manual if there's still stuff left to be done that needs to be in the manual.  Looks like AE will be out on or before the Midway anniversary date...

I feel it is my duty to warn my fellow forum friends that there can be a very serious, presumably unintended consequence from viewing this particular thread. My wife , while looking over my shoulder, caught a glimpse of the title to this. She immediately assumed that WiTP players were ALL supposed  to remain celibate as long as they are playing. For some reason she seemed quite happy at that prospect. I am not. I want to have my cake and eat it too. So to speak.

So be aware. Don't let your significant other see this thread. I now am off to buy flowers, wine, chocolate, and anything else I can think of to help correct this set back that just occured in the field.

Wow...that is harsh brothah!

I would recommend a body piercing or something to spice things up. Or ask her if she would get a map of the DEI or something of that sort tattood (sp.????) on the small of her back.

If that doesn't work, see if you can find a female WITP player as an opponent to make her jealous.

Wow, I'm not so sure. Letting her give you a body piercing when she ticked off. She might use a Ka-Bar or something. Good luck.

Some claim that Terminus is actually the only female that plays WitP. I'm aware that Termi presents himself as a male, but those of us who have viewed his toe have often wondered....

AFAIK, there are (or were) only 2 females playing WITP, so good luck on that! [:D]

Dear Diary,

On day 33 of my celibacy...my goodness, I've gone this long without WitP?!

I keep thinking AE is gonna show up and ruin everything, because I know AE will be a temptation to break my celibacy that I cannot overcome.  But still no sign of AE, so I feel secure at the moment....

P.S.  I've read five works of "literature" in the past month.  Of these five, three are as bad as anything I've ever read:  The Color Purple, Tobacco Road, and Wise Blood.  Literature is overrated.

@Canoerebel , I have tired that, it doesn't work.
The best thing you can do is to devote the reminder of your life to War in the Pacific / AE.

You're probably right, but then I'll become the digital age version of a couch potato!

Seriously, I LOVE WitP. I would enjoy nothing more than devoting all of my spare time to the game. But I am convinced that doing so would be a path that flatters only to deceive. Kind of like a diet consisting only of donuts or Pop-Tarts or Key Lime Pie. For awhile you'd think you were in heaven, but sooner or later you'd be fed up with it, your health ruined, and you wish you had chosen more wisely.

I am darn sure that if I devoted the time I want to WitP, sometime - maybe five or ten or fifteen years from now - I'd suddenly realize I had "wasted" prime years, and I'd really wish I had spent those years doing other things.

" Kind of like a diet consisting only of donuts or Pop-Tarts or Key Lime Pie. "  Hmm, I haven't tried that diet yet. Can I drink beer, wine and Cognac on this diet also ?
