Torpedo strike on Zuikaku

Post by stldiver »

Sept 2nd 1942.

Cpt Ichibaei was standing on the flight deck of the CV Zuikaku, it was good to feel the rumble of the engines thru the hull. The morning light was a faint glimmer to the east. That was their direction. They were 80 miles from Fiji and moving in, their orders protect the massive fleet. The entire KB was escorting over 200 transports, there were battleships along also. It had been over a month since there last trip down here and now it was time to support the troops who were holding Nadii.

Suddenly Cpt Ichibaei hears a dull thud and a geyser of water shoots up the port side, drenching him with salt spray. A torpedo hit but no explosions, quickly he runs towards the bridge to begin evasive actions, as he knows their destroyer escorts will try to track down the allied submarine.

Withdraw from Fiji

Post by stldiver »

Sept 4th

Cpt Ichibai gives the order, withdraw forces.

It had taken two days but all 3 divisions plus support units had been lifted off of Fiji. The allies had done one day of fighter sweeps that resulted in more losses for them. In addition one transport had been lost to a sub attack. But other then that the operation was successful.

If successful is what you would call the first major withdrawel of the Japanese forces. The allies had not defeated them, just stopped them. High Command had ordered the troops to be used in other places. The order was given and as all good samurai's it was executed.

Cpt Ichibai enjoyed sailing these waters and they had sunk many enemy ships. But it was time for a different phase to the war he could feel it.

He had heard in India, the Japanese airforce was fighting battles daily over the air in large numbers, even though the allied commands took heavy losses, they kept coming.

In Australia he heard also Allied bombers where hitting there advances south. In the North no futher advances had been made and winter was coming.

Cpt Ichibai had plenty to be concerned with but he knew the mighty Japanese Navy and Army where intact and ready for whatever the next phase was.

RE: Withdraw from Fiji

Post by scott64 »

Captain Midnight surveys the barren landscape of Nadi in the Fiji Islands.
The ragtag air units of the American, New Zealand, and Australia pounded
the Japanese units daily for almost 3 months. A Juggernaut of Japanese ships
and planes came back, not to play but to pick up their yellow bellied army
guys and head for part unknown, mostly likely India. The Allies won a minor
victory. Beer and Spam were served in celebration.

All's quiet in the Pacific front

Post by stldiver »

Sept 3rd thru 8th 1942

We are up to Sept 8th and all is quiet. The only major events the last few days is and Ambush in India and Northern Australia of allied Airpower by the Japanese, this included Nicks! (did I mention I love these planes) that shredded a lot of bombers. The last few days have been quiet with the allied airpower refusing to play.

Nadii's empty base is recaptured all the allies found was 9 barrels of oil left, we took everything out including the silverware.

The troops have left successfully which was our major plan. In the end Nadii was to exposed with Scott having airsuperiority and soon the P-38's coming online would mean it would have been more difficult to evacuate 3 divisions plus, that were needed elsewhere. He could have just bypassed these troops. Now they are usefull again.

In India the allies have moved into Jamshedepur we have about equal forces and both side bombard. There is movement by both sides but still no major events.

We also have seen AP's moving back into Suva, guess those troops are ready to move out.

Another CV put under

Post by stldiver »

Sept 12th 1942

The captain of the CL Tenryu looked through the darkness, it was almost pitch black but they knew their orders. Engage and destroy allied ships spotted at Suva. The nerve of the allied command to think just because the Imperial forces moved out of Nadii that they controlled the sealanes. The Japanese force was not large but it was to send a message that these waters were still claimed by Samurai!

They knew the allied forces had some transports and some DD's but that was all that reconn could muster with subs also giving reports, suddenly the watch yells out "Enemy ships sighted 1000 yds dead ahead, 14 enemy ships and what appears to be a carrier!"

Starshells immediatly illuminate the allied ships, and the experianced japanese crews begin firing on their targets, shortly after several allied ships are lite up from torpedo strikes. The Japanese have achieved another victory but it is not absolute, as the allies are learning to withdraw their ships faster.

As the sun rises the Japanese fleet retires having sent its message, allied planes harras the ships but no damage is done.

Once again Saki is broken out and shared in triumph!

Normally a force like this would wipe out the allied forces trying to get underway, either the CL's being slow allowed the allied ships to get underway faster or latest patch has toned down this damage, (correctly so I might add, as it was to deadly before) just an assumption. No hard facts.

Historical fact:
USS Long Island (AVG-1, later ACV-1 and CVE-1), 1941-1947
USS Long Island, a 7886-ton escort aircraft carrier, was launched in January 1940 at Chester, Pennsylvania, as the merchant cargo ship Mormacmail. The U.S. Navy acquired her in March 1941 and converted her to its prototype escort carrier. Long Island was commissioned in early June 1941 and conducted trial operations in the Atlantic during the rest of that year. Among the results of these tests was a lengthened flight deck. She also performed some convoy escort duties and, during the first months of 1942, was employed as a training carrier.

In May 1942, Long Island went to the Pacific, where she served with the west-coast-based battleship force in June and also continued her pilot training mission. Beginning in July, she transported aircraft to island bases, including carrying planes to the newly-conquered, and tenuously-held, position on Guadalcanal. Long Island was reclassified ACV-1 (auxiliary aircraft carrier) in August 1942 and soon returned to the west coast to resume training carrier pilots. In July 1943, she was again reclassified, becoming CVE-1 (escort aircraft carrier).

During 1944 and 1945, Long Island was kept busy transporting aircraft from the United States to locations closer to the Pacific war zone. After the end of World War II, she brought home service personnel as part of Operation "Magic Carpet". Decommissioned in March 1946 and soon stricken from the list of Naval vessels, USS Long Island was sold for scrapping in April 1947. However, she was subsequently resurrected to become the civilian passenger ship Nelly. In 1953, she was renamed Seven Seas and was thereafter employed as a seagoing university.

The Long Island when it was not a reef.

I think Scott is learning a nasty lesson in fast raiding SCTFs. AE is a much different beast than WitP in that regard. One could wonder what WPO would be like with an AE upgrade...

Alls quiet with Co-prosperity

Post by stldiver »

Sept 18th thru 20th.

Very little action.

China we chase renegades behind our lines as they try to get back to thiers.

central, South and SW pacific alls quiet

Northern australia
2 allied units that tried to make the long walk to Daly Waters have turned around and are making the long walk home. Seems daily bombing must not improve morale [:D]

India
A few air skirmish's but nothing of significance.

Overall we have entered another quiet period. The thrashing Scott mentions was just a lead unit taking the pounding as we crossed more units over the river into Calcutta. Nothing to worry about, the Emporer understood the sacrifice was neccessary!

Bloodshed in India

Post by stldiver »

Sept 21st 1942

A tired Japanese Samurai wiped the dirt from his face. They had launched in the morning what was supposed to be a victorious assault at Calcutta, their forces outnumbered the enemy 3 to 1. They had plenty of engineers to reduce the enemies forts and obstructions. The naval fleet was there to pound the shores, success like all their other battles was a forgone conclusions.

He leans back against the wall, the enemies forts had not even been touched by our engineers (those incompetants!). The naval units seemed more content to hit the airfield and port facilities, and the airforce did not even fly to soften the enemy troops. Still they charged 100,000 strong and they were meet by a murderous fire. Samurais do not fear, but the enemy seemed to be twice as strong behind their city walls and fortifications. No he thought, he was lucky to be alive, this city should have been taken in the beginning before they expanded out. Now it was to strong, they must surround and starve these troops out, as a frontal assualt is to costly.

He gazes up as more soldiers move back to thier morning positions.

Emporer Update

Post by stldiver »

Sept 24th 1942

Tojo walks into the Emporers study, once again he is playing chess.

After the usual formalities the Emporer states "So how goes the war?"

Tojo "Sir in the North Pacific all has gone quiet, we hold and Nells rule the skies. The winter will come in a few days and we don't anticipate much happening"

Emporer "Very well, we must protect our northern Islands from an attack in this direction, what about the rest of the Pacific?"

Tojo "We grow stronger every day but all is quiet since we relocated from Fiji, troops and supplies are repositioning, there has been no sign of the American Navy, but we have intel that they may have a major upgrade in October to thier weapons systems, whether they do this or wait we are not sure."

Emporer "Great continue strengthing the defenses, they will come soon. I sense their urgency"

Tojo "In Australia we have sighted more then 22 enemy units at Tennant Creek, but their 2 units that marched towards Daly Waters from Townsville area are retreating daily. We await thier advance but are wary of a possible invasion behind this area into the DEI. We have played out several scenario's and are also strengthening this area"

Emporer "Very good, when they come, they must be hurt badley so they decide this war is not worth it. What of India?"

Tojo "Since our last assault on Calcutta we are reorganizing for another tactic, They have stopped bombing our forces, they must be consolidating for an advance, but we also are building our defenses in Java in case they try to land behind our strength. There power appears to be growing but we are also strong."

Emporer "What of China, are we at the gates of Chungking?"

Tojo "Sir our forces from the NE have withdrawn due to a large force moving out from Chungking routed several divisions, but from the SW we have taken Kweiyang, and we have 2 routes to push them back. Although the tighter the noose the stronger they get. We hope to be at Chungking before the spring."

Emporer "Very well, it appears things have gone very well for us, but Yamamoto has informed me these Americans are a sleeping giant, I feel that soon they will want to test us. Make sure all forces are in position and ready. Plus have we still have that one other objective to achieve."

Tojo nods assent and bows as he exits the room.

The Emporer moves his bishop and says check to a shadowy figure across the table.

PBY's

Post by stldiver »

Sept 29th 1942

The harbor master at Unmak tells the crew of the AK Kuwayama Maru to cast off, the last of the supplies had been just unloaded and it was time for the ship to leave. It had unloaded with its sister ship for the last 6 days. Its sister left 2 days ago. This was at the front of the Japanese advance, a mere distance away Cold bay and the Americans sat. No aircover was provided, no surface support yet they were not bothered, such was the might of the Japanese Empire.

Suddenly he hears a loud wham, and see's a geyser of water rise from the side of the tanker, a white wake heads out of the habor, "a dud, a dud" he hears echoed along the pier.

The transport begins to make way out of the harbor, it is time to leave. Then out of the NW there are spotted 4 patrol planes and they slowly make a descent just above waterline. The anti-aircraft guns begin to bark and one plane is damaged. The harbor master knows this does not look good and he watches as the planes drop their torpedoes into the water. The first two planes miss but the last two spell doom for the Kuyama Maru.

He quickly gives orders for boats to pushoff and rescue survivors, they crew will be joining them on this island.
