Shoho has been commissioned. As soon as a proper DD escort is in place, she will head south to Truk to join Zuiho, Taiyo, and Ruyjo as part of the Support Carrier Force (abbreviated SCF, colloquiually known as mini-KB). She will relieve Hosho, which is heading back to Japan for service as a training carrier, aircraft transport, and ASW platform. SCF will provide aircover for operations at Rabaul and the eastern tip of New Guinea.

KB is finishing up covering the Ambon operation. Depending on the state of the ships and fatigue level of the pilots and air frames, KB will either go hunting in the DEI or withdraw to a safe harbor for a few days before supporting the next stages of conquest.

Although this was a real war use of these small CVs and CVEs for the IJN, where do you feel you have need of ASW air that can't be reached from land, and couldn't an AV provide the same more effectively with a less important and useful asset?

As for training groups for CV use, I guess this could be useful, but it's so small that you'd almost have to split groups to do it.

He has several submarines in the Yellow Sea and prowling around the Sea of Japan and the Fifth Fleet area in the Kuriles. Although I have land-based ASW air assets, I need some of these aircraft deployed forward as well...I don't seem to have enough light bombers and float planes to give all the coverage I want. I have some AVs in the build/convert queue.

I try to have a realistic style of play. In real life Hosho's small size made it very difficult for her to operate modern aircraft, so I don't plan to use her the same way I am using my other small carriers. I have her stocked with Claudes and Jeans right now. My plan to use her as a training carrier is to train individual pilots up to a decent level, then stick them in the Reserve and transfer them as individuals to carrier squadrons as needed.

For training I'm sure this will work fine for individual pilots, but you could just leave them on land as well. In terms of carrier skill this is a group skill feature only applicable if the group is on the carrier training. Sorry if you already were assuming this and just stating the other use of her as a simple airfield for training normally.

She'll be a target in the ASW role and will likely attract a full spread of torpedoes should she encounter subs. I feel at risk EVERY time I've moved CVs out of port in my game as I've already had about 7 attacks against CVs with 3 torpedoes taken in spite of the poor quality ordnance of early war US subs.

That's a good point about her being a target. I don't mean to be complacent. Right now it is Jan 8th 1942 in our game and EVERY SINGLE US TORPEDO has been a dud or a miss, even from S-boats with the Mark 10 torps. There is no way that will last.

The troops in the clear between Sinyang and Hankow are dead meat if you bomb them extensively. And get some armor in there. Clear hexes and Chinese units don't mix well.

Yeah I have been bombing them every day, and there is armor on the way. There are over 100,000 Chinese in that hex and I've only got about 20,000, however my troops are much better quality and are well-supplied.

I bet you'll be fine. I would welcome an attack if his troops are even slightly disabled by the air strikes.

Nothing submariny happened last turn and not much happening in China last turn, although my campaign to dislodge some Chinese units off a northern railline in the mountains made some progress.

The big news was an inconclusive cruiser battle near Kavieng. I lost a destroyer and he (reportedly) lost the cruiser Perth. More details later.

Haruna reached Hong Kong, where the shipyard reports it will take three months to restore her to fully operational status. It's OK...she sank the Prince of Wales.

Observant readers may note that the IJN destroyers present in this battle were obsolete types, and the CAs were my four oldest/weakest. They acquitted themselves well considering the Allied force was somewhat stronger.

ASW effort bears fruit

Post by FDRLincoln »

Loss of US submarine Stingray just showed up in the sunk ship report. This would coincide with an apparently successful ASW attack in the shallow water of the Yellow Sea a few turns ago. It could be FOW, but the combat animation showed this submarine getting pounded pretty bad, and she's a long way from home.
