I can't vouch for the source, but the detail was captivating. I think he refers to the
VP squadrons in general sometimes and others his own. Hard to say. I love this kind of
read though, like throwing spice on the game and flavoring on history.

RE: To Young to Die, To Old to Rock and Roll
The best year of the war, IMO, is between about Sept 42 to Sept 43. After that, the Allied war machine gets too strong to hold back.
When I have a serious operation going on, I start to randomly click on hexes in the general area and especially to the west to see if any weather my be headed in. I've used major storm fronts to hide my ships.

Are you talking about clicking on ocean hexes? How do you get a weather report on them if you do not have ships or aircraft there? Does search provide reports on this? I have not been able to get such info in my stock games. Often, I cannot even get weather reports for islands I have landed troops on! [:(]ORIGINAL: ny59giants

Hit the "K" button to bring up weather for the whole map. Its divided into 9 sections. I can then click on any hex on the map and in the middle slightly to right of top toolbar, it will tell you the likely weather there for the next day. Again, I said "likely." In the top right corner of my game vs John 3rd, its all rain. The next section slightly to left towards Japan says thunderstorms. Right above Attu, is where the line is for t-storms and rain. I could monitor the speed the t-storms move east to time my own ship movements. If an operation requires more stealth than air power, I can use this knowledge.

Many thanks ny59giants!

I had no idea this feature existed.
EDIT: I tried it out - I was expecting something that showed individual hex differences but all I get is the standard "Partly Cloudy" for every hex. This is no help at all. I tried turning on the Advanced Weather but have not saved the turn yet so it still shows Partly Cloudy everywhere.
Is there something else needed? Do I need the latest Beta?

I think its 'Partly Cloudy' everywhere unless you do you have 'Advanced Weather' - ON. I know many players complain about the influence of weather on game play. Sometimes I feel I'm playing two player - John 3rd and weather. [:D]
Many years ago I had weather rescue me in WITP. Just after Pearl Harbor I ran into the safety of bad weather NNE of Hawaii. It saved Lex and Big E from KB as I did some dumb things. [X(] I was able to get back to West Coast safely.
It did in my current game vs John in Gulf of Alaska. 3 hexes away from KB and under a blizzard. No air attacks!!

Yeah, I did switch on Advanced weather and after saving the preference change and restarting the game I finally know what you were saying - my NE section of the map is forecast "Thunderstorms" but it is November so when I click the hexes in the Aleutians area the header forecast says "Blizzard". First time I have seen that.ORIGINAL: ny59giants

I get it that the weather cuts both ways so I am willing to live with that. I was just hoping for a little more definite forecast of the hexes near my TFs so I could actually head for a patch of cloud when needed. Qué sera, sera! I learned a few things so I thank you for your input Michael.

RE: To Young to Die, To Old to Rock and Roll
Weather predictions in the game are always for the whole regions. The 'k' key to bring up the weather panel (or the '3' hotkey to show it right on the game map) are always about the following day.
The mouse-over information that you get on bases and such is always a report of the last phase of the day just finished. In game terms is the weather there "now". So if you transfer a squadron they are subject to the weather "now" at both origin and destination.
The weather is never 100% as predicted over an entire region. The actual weather during each hex during each phase of the day is variable.
BTW I am speaking about with Advanced Weather = On. I don't play without it because it is too good a random variable to give up! [:D]

RE: To Young to Die, To Old to Rock and Roll
witpqs - I knew all that stuff about the weather, and the Advanced Weather Off also gives random weather conditions in each hex - but just a little more good weather than the Advanced Weather ON allows. I thought ny59giants had found a way to get some reasonable possibility of predicting the weather a hex or two away from my bases/TFs/targets. It appears the "line of storms" he was following was general blizzards for the area with probably some clouds showing to give the line he followed. I was playing with clouds OFF too, and when I turned them ON in preferences, saved the game and restarted it they still did not show up. I had to use the F7 key to toggle them OFF then ON again to get them to show.
I think I am more or less up to speed now - I can refine my Thunderstorms into Blizzards! [:)]

RE: To Young to Die, To Old to Rock and Roll
There is a Cat 3 hurricane aiming for the east coast, but where it is going is still not an exact science. I like the variable of the advanced weather for game play. In modern terms, the USA still has the most all weather war planes. Imagine what it was like 70 plus years ago.

The only way that I know that a sort of line of storms can be predicted is at the weather region boundaries. The developers have said that there is no modeling of larger (than a hex) storms or fronts or anything. But when you are along a boundary between regions you certainly can try to use the differences in weather between them to your benefit.

16oo nm out from San Diego. Deep, smothering, gray clouds lay low over the Pacific. Cpt. Tyler and Cmdr. Paquette surveyed the sea from the fantail of their freighter. The atmosphere was eerie. Encased in the cloud bank with them lay the prying eye of the Japanese. They were spotted. An escort had spotted a periscope not a mile from their ship. The destroyers urgently sought a contact. Both officers knew how hard it would be to replace their squadrons and how essential they were to “Lighthouse”. It did not help matters when the TF CO informed them, far to the south, a large tanker had sent out an SOS. The message was short.

Cmdr. Paquette was able to highline back to his ship. 360nm had passed since the contact the day before. The new Fletchers prowled above and below the surface for any more threats. He looked forward to flying again. Pearl was flashing out more sightings off Lahaina today and they were not far away from the reports.
MGen Geiger liked the Admiral. He had left the time table and means to him for the operations. Geiger surveyed the transports arrived from stateside late last night, they would require a couple of days to fully disgorge their men and supplies. The amphibious convoy, also arriving last night was done, their decks awash with men performing last minute repairs before they were sent forward. Tossing back a cold beer, of which more and more was reaching the Line Islands with every convoy, he awaited his XO and a ride over to the point. From there he would be able to see the advance party load and depart to “Lighthouse One”. They should weigh anchor tonight and be well to sea by tomorrow. The Admiral wanted to know every detail once he had commenced the OP.

Col Leach watches from the signalman’s positon off the bridge. Scanning the overcast for any signs of a periscope wake, he loses sight of the lead APD in the formation. Captain says he expects to be on the way home evening of the 12th. Word reaches Leach from Geiger the main party will depart early tomorrow. He is also advised he may have search up on the 12th. This would be a relief as the main party cannot match the speed of the APDs.

Cmdr. Paquette and Cpt. Tyler are picked up by motor launch and delivered to the lagoon. Gen. Geiger is waiting. Their cargo is a large part of the operation and he conveys it with handshakes. He is happy to get the ball rolling. Only hours before Col. Leach’s main body weighed anchor and headed west. Paquette and Tyler are told to take 48 hours and rest their crews. He needed to get Seabees ready for embarkation to “Lighthouse 1” and an advance party out to “Lighthouse 2”. Geiger’s XO would show them the base. The loud drone of SBDs staging down from Pearl drowned out the parting words. Paquette motioned to his lips, the XO grinned.
