Golden opportunity spurned on the previous turn as I had the bombers at Rabaul performing recon on PM. A couple of ships were sighted and if those Bettys had of been set to naval attack (as they should have been) this result may not have taken place. For all the damage though it could have been worse with only a few aircraft destroyed. Damage at Rabaul stands at 03 18 46 and with plenty of construction units and supply available hopefully this will come down quickly. Still, these are great opportunities to cause meaningful damage to valuable Allied assets and this time I was woefully unprepared for the gift.
Good play by Mundy for daring to have a go. Great to see an ANZAC/Dutch TF having success.

Here is the world map as of 11 February 1942. China and Burma do indeed have the look of a quagmire. Philippines is coming along nicely and over the next 2 months the DEI has to turn red.

With lots of writing going on and actions all over it must get hard to keep up with what is taking place and more importantly where. I will try and shed some light on the mill stone that is China.
Firstly, in the Yenan area. At present all efforts are focused upon dislodging the 115 Red China Division. It is a static division and a monster unit at that. They are not interested in going easily. We have been chipping away at the forts and next assault should see them drop to 1 and we should achieve 1:1 odds and really start to cause this lot grief. When we finally do get them to move the next objective will be to dismantle whatever lurks in Yenan. I not sure that this axis of attack is any better than taking on the road to the south which now has well dug in Chinese. At any rate we should clear this area and have no issues with Chinese lurking in our rear.
The force amassed to deal with Red China is;
37 Division
41 Division
110 Division
4th Independent Mixed Brigade
9th Independent Mixed Brigade
4 x Artillery Units
This force currently has 1528AV and supply is not an issue. In support is 1st Army HQ + 5th Armoured Car Company still to make the crossing. 8th Independent Mixed Brigade, which took the brunt of casualties in the initial river crossing, is currently on R&R at Peiping. 62 good IJA Inf Sqd 41 available but a further 52 disabled squads still to come back on line. This unit is prepping for Sian.

Swamp of Despair
And speaking of quagmires. We have here the Swamp of Despair. Holed up in swampland to the east of Huaishang is the 3rd Guerilla Base Force and what a pain they have turned out to be. On the last occasion an assault was launched against them they mustered 112 AV which was adjusted to 208 AV. In the process of attempting to oust them I have trashed the 2nd Raiding Regiment who are ingloriously trudging out of the cloying mud. 58th Infantry Regiment 122 AV will hold the line here until the arrival of 13th Independent Mixed Brigade 210 AV currently marching in from Huaishang. When they arrive the attempt to dislodge this base force will resume.
And the reason why we find ourselves bogged down by a base force in swamp land. One hex away in the hex to the south west of Suchow we have a bunch of Chinese units impertinent enough to attempt a break out or maybe they just fancied sitting on a road way to make a nuisance of themselves. It turns out that their only means of egress is the hex behind them which leads them back to the swamp. Not wishing to attempt to clean this lot out in the swamp I want the base force evicted so that this last hexside can be closed off. After that these units can be neutralized without fear of them escaping into the swamp.
The Chinese units, however, have a not insubstantial AV of 565. To deal with them I have gathered
32nd Division
2nd Independent Mixed Brigade
12th Tank Regiment
15th Tank Regiment
10th Mountain Gun Battalion
with AV of 697 and plenty of supply. Perhaps I should be trying a deliberate attack whilst waiting for that swamp to be cleared.

The Chinese units, however, have a not insubstantial AV of 565. To deal with them I have gathered
32nd Division
2nd Independent Mixed Brigade
12th Tank Regiment
15th Tank Regiment
10th Mountain Gun Battalion
with AV of 697 and plenty of supply. Perhaps I should be trying a deliberate attack whilst waiting for that swamp to be cleared.

Hex Flip
Hi all. Sorry for the AAR down time. Back to work from my Christmas sick spell and between work and still getting over it something has to give.
I have a bunch of days to post but that shall have to wait until tomorrow.
In the mean time I have a question. It might be specific to Large Slow Target and the Mod or it could just be something about the game that I've never picked up on before.
My issue is captured bases flipping back to Allied control once my forces leave the base that has been captured. This is happening presently in Java as can be seen by the graphic below. The yellow circles are two recently captured bases that have reverted to Allied control. The red circle is a base that had been captured and then flipped and has since been recaptured. This is quite annoying and actually is a problem for my forces in Batavia as they now have no supply route until the supporting unit moves into the hex. I have also noticed a couple of captured dot bases in Burma that have also reverted to enemy control.
Any insight into what is going on here will be appreciated.

RE: Hex Flip
This is the standard "rowboat corps" behaviour. If an enemy unit is in range of at least 3 hexes from your empty base, there is a chance, that the base will revert to the enemy's control. To stop it, for port base you can disband a single ship there, for inland bases either a LCU squad or a single aircraft should be enough.

RE: Hex Flip
Thanks Yaab. The "rowboat corps doctrine" makes sense. I'd not seen such a robust flipping of bases before in my previous AE game. Wild times in Java then as bases fall and shortly thereafter return to the fold. Reminds me of the Australians recapturing a vacant Kokoda from the unwary Japanese invaders.ORIGINAL: Yaab

RE: Hex Flip
I wonder how it will play out in Burma and China in your game, where there are real carpets of bases. Imagine, if you control the whole of Burma as the Japs and the Allies decide to drop paratroopes in the middle of the carpet. Reverting galore! I dont know if you have enough units to man all the bases.

RE: Hex Flip
The profusion of dot bases certainly does change the dynamics. A deep parachute drop is going to cause problems and I guess I will need a reserve force available to counter such a tactic. OTOH all those dot bases means that a rail line route will not immediately open up to rail in reinforcements.ORIGINAL: Yaab

Japan has nowhere near enough units to cover everything. it is going to be tough going. We shall see how Burma and China play out as I do intend to push on into Burma once Singapore has been secured. China, of course, has to have something done to it before it becomes a big monster.

Care to give us a precis of your current positions Bif? And which version of the game are you playing. I'm reasonably happy with my current position even though Singapore is behind the RL schedule. OTOH I'm hopeful of wrapping up Bataan/Corregidor soon so that will even up the ledger.
I'm in that planning stage of having to decide to make a commitment as to where I will head in force to for the next phase. The DEI looks like it should potter on at a reasonable pace and the big ticket item to gain is Palembang. That will happen after Batavia is secure and I can safely establish a foot hold in Oostahven.
For future planning though I am torn between the Burma campaign and moving on down into New Guinea and the Solomons. I really want to deal with Burma which is going to be tough and I know that Ed has concentrated on Rangoon so it will be no pushover. Problem, of course, is naval support and I am increasingly leaning towards having the majority of the IJN concentrate in the Pacific so that any raiding by the USN can be countered. Quite the pickle and I am going to have to settle on a plan very soon.
