Air attacks have diminishing returns. When a unit hits 50% effectiveness they no longer lose effectiveness. They still do take hits though.

In my game with Battlevonwar we are pretty evenly matches in skill so I can get a feel for the air attacks and the Russian Front

In the Mediterranean we have allied landings in Spain France and Italy. I try to respond with diminishing reserves. I think we might get them out in at least 2 out of 3 places but we will see. At least the allies have to send stuff around Africa and that takes some time. In North Africa we push back the allies a little bit but getting them out might be hard.

But as it should be the war will be lost in the east. Luftwaffe shot out of the sky and retreats to try and lick the wounds for a while. Lost a PZ corps to shatter and some other units rendered useless and it is just december long winter to go. Again funny how things change. Some turns ago it felt ok now it feels really bad [:)],

I completely underestimated how fast the Russians get fairly strong. Dont think 42 Barbarossa is a very good idea now [:)]. I think one need to try and cut the russians down to size in 41 for sure.

When I open my turn my units are down to low 30s sometimes in effectiveness. Bombing and land combat usually like 4 of them before they retreat seems to take them down to those levels. It is just a feeling that in one turn a unit can go from excellent state to a wreck and even shatter it feels a bit harsh (and we are talking seriously good units like a German pz corps). I also feel this intense bombardment over a fairly small area didnt happen that often i WW2 and here it is the by far best way to inflict damage. I feel it should be toned down a bit but it is your game and I really like it even with some issues I would have done a bit different [:)].

MagicMissile, concentrated bombing breaks stalemates but on the larger Eastern Front boy does it feel disheartening when one unit strikes twice and 27-30 of them probably vaporize your entire army. I am playing your opponent and he is pretty good. Both a little luck and meticulous planning(and my errors) has taught me he is a tough player who has spent a bit more time in the driver seat so to speak.

You have done incredibly well. I wouldn't gauge this on a 1945 finish. I think you probably would of been better off with a '41 Barbarossa.

A lot of the alterations or bugs players who have played 5-10 games or only into 1940 or 1941 cannot be discovered long term. You got to get into '43-'44 to know what the techs, tactics, issues will be. This game has a lot of growing.

You should feel very proud of your baby in this game. She did well just tyronecs did better.

Be aware that if you take Spain in 1940-1941 your objective in Russia is not to conquer them but to push them to a solid Axis defensive line and use economy of force to delay your collapse. The game rewards progress to avoid Sitzkreigs. So if you pushed too hard in 1942 it can end you up in this situation.

I made my own mistakes. I flubbed in Algeria. I should have had UK troops in there 2 turns earlier to stuff you. That was a big mistake on my part. I thought I had more time.

Snow in the North, kill a Corps and beat up another couple of units.
Mud in the South so rest time.

Kill a British Hq in North Africa. Allies withdrawing. Trying to scramble up reserves to defend Italy and southern France. Because I moved the airforce out of Russia last turn some airplanes could fly to the Med and still rail in some troops. Axis will have quite a large air advantage so with that the hope of kicking the allies out of France at least is growing.
I Reinforce corsica see if we can hold the ports a bit longer.

But the east is dire. Heavy rain in the south so guess I will get some respite there but the northern part of the front defended with very weak units and not much reserves might be a Stalingrad yet :).

Thanks for your kind words,

Yes it will take many games to really get the hang of it. But in this game too big early losses resources spent on subs (we played with 200 cost subs) and it has been a catch up all game long for a while I thought I woulnt have enough units to form a front in the east. I didnt think a 41 Barbarrosa would have worked at all the army was so weak and I thought it would take the Russians a bit longer to get into shape with a 42 start. But now I think you might be right the Russians are fairly weak too 41 and I would have been able to grab more territory probably and make it harder for Russia to build up this large airforce with a 41 start. Hard to tell but that is what makes it fun [:)].

Soviets in the North are doing fine, take 3 hexes and trash a couple of Corps.
Soviets in the South can do nothing as the heavy mud continues. Am moving most of the VVS to the North where they are more likely to have the weather to attack.

The Allies are losing out everywhere on the mainland. I may just be able to take Corsica and hold onto Sardinia and am having a go at Sicily. But having to retreat back to Suez is not off the cards at all.

MM is pulling off a good move. By shifting all the Luftwaffe against the Allies am going to have NO chance of getting anywhere and am likely to lose a few more units. The Soviets are not going to be able to do much until until May or so when the weather clears.

Interesting game !

Soviets.

Another Snow turn and with all the VVS in the North continue to press forwards.
It is very slow during the winter, am doing damage but going forwards very slowly. The question is, with 20 hexes to Berlin, and maybe 40 clear turns until the end of the game, can the Soviets take out the whole of Germany in time.

Med.

Saved by mud this turn.
Pulling out of France and looks like I may get out of W. Africa without further losses.
Interesting situation on the Islands. Axis have landed on Sardinia, they are isolated but they have cut off my units in Corsica. They have the advantage with more air support, I just need lots of heavy rain and that might help me.

2nd turn January 1943

Forgot to write about last turn but thankfully Tyrone did [:)].

The war in the Mediterranean kind of continues to go well. Got a cold turn and the Axis clear out France and Italy the allies losing one corps and 2 divisions surrendering. Only units on the islands and a divison in Spain remain. There is fighting on all islands with the question who will starve first. Feeling fairly hopeful this can end ok. The allies fight on a long supplyline and not that many harbors to work with and we got a fair amount of airplanes in the area. With that said lots of allied transports in the med now so we will see :).

2nd turn January 1943

Southern part of Russia ok with bad weather yet again. In the north the Russians push on and situation desperate. Most inf corps down to 1-4 combat strength and very little reserves. Even have a hq in the line not so good :). Some units coming off the production lines so situation might improve a little bit soon but the feeling is not good [:)].

Russia.

Blizzard in the North. Manage to push back a couple of divisions, can't do anything else.
Mud in the South.

The Med.
MM continues to kick my ass. Air power rules the waves and not much I can do, will see what can be extracted from the present fiasco.

Feb 12 1943

Forgot screenshots again but not that much happened. One british division destroyed on Corsica. Sicily retaken after allied evac. In all of mainland Europe there is now only one US arm in the small port on the southern tip of Italy. I expect it will leave very shortly. The western allies have retreated to North Africa so the funny effect of all this is that it might be a historical approach from now on with first clearing out Africa maybe?

We sink a transport which according to combat log was transporting a partisan is that possible?

There is a British fleet in the strait between Corsica and Sardinia. Axis airforce bomb it and cause some damage but not that much. Here I am thinking it is a bit funny that one unit find it and not the others. Maybe if one airunit or fleet spot the fleets all units searching after should have a increased chance of finding the fleet as well. There are 14 axis airunits in the area one would think that navy should be doomed maybe next turn if it stays around.

Also as some other people have noted I think if there was a intercept check at both embark and disembarkpoint we wouldnt see all these small invasions taking place if there is a real risk when you leave port it will be much more dangerous to invade.

In the east two German coprs are shattered that is not sustainable for sure. Axis retreats a few hexes here and there . Also we made a counterattack from 4 hexes on a Russian arm corps the best odds I got was 2:1 after 3 attacks it retreats but I lose 2:1 in losses which cant be afforded so counterattacking getting increasingly difficult. Does not bode well for the future. Only two turns more of winter then in March at least a chance for rain so prayers go to the weather gods [:)].

Snow in Russia and make a strong push in the North. Two corps shattered including a mech. Leaving myself a bit exposed but hoping it will cost Axis if they want to kill a unit. Unless Axis have been building a lot of reserve Panzer corps am thinking they may have difficulty holding back the Red steamroller (what is the airborne version of a steamroller ?) come summer.

Hanging on in Corsica, looks like another two units are going to die here. My last outpost in Europe, just can't see how to make progress in the face of Axis air power. Not sure how far I can get along North Africa as once I get within range of the Luftwaffe in Sicily it will probably be a dead end.

Yes, that was a partisan decoy as sea.

Could be looking like a mainland Europe free from the domination of Facists and Capitalists !
