Carrier battle of Washington Isl (Feb42)

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Let the show begin (note: I don't know yet how this ends)

AM turn:
Bad weather over USN CVs meant no USN strikes at all. KB was very active but against other TFs, I think I lost one tanker, and 1 BB and 3 to 4 cruisers got bomb damage

PM phase:
Lost cohesion for USN strikes
then KB sent its strike pack

Japanese strike put some bombs on carriers, a few are "on fire", but doesn't look like anyone got too badly hurt

now it its the turn of the USN... so far I am liking not too many Zeroes on defense and relatively cohesive strike

RE: Carrier battle of Washington Isl (Feb42)

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

PM phase: Japanese

I just noticed heavy fires on Yorktown, its planes (actually a lot of planes) went to Palmyra

- Many tankers, cruisers, battleship hit... that was on purpose, maybe it is a bit gamey, it is definitively stalinistic; I like to throw everything that is near during carrier battles, with the hope of getting less fire volume on the carriers

- P-40 CAP was disappointing, that said, last turn they shined trimming down Zero fighter numbers before the great battle

RE: Carrier battle of Washington Isl (Feb42)

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

USN strikes:

- I don't think I sank anything (well, actually DD Arare likely)
- This was the full "ToraToraTora" KB; I don't understand why my naval search was showing 10 ships [:@]
- Shokaku is in big trouble, Kaga is OK; all the rest are in some degree of trouble
- TWho knows how many are still capable of operating planes, I would guess Kaga, not many more, I mean checking how many of my planes had to divert to Palmyra tells me there had to be a lot of ditching for Japan
- I was very unlucky with torpedo bombers, I counted 3 "hit no explosions", and the ones that hit got irrelevant ships... That said, the fact that short legged Devastators played a role in the battle is good enough

Overall this was a great victory [&o]

Now I need to assess damage and chances of pursuit

Wow, what a slug fest!

Good show on damage to the IJN carriers; now how many of yours can you save?

RE: Carrier battle of Washington Isl (Feb42)

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

2nd day was an even worst slug fest; I somehow under estimated the KB's capability to come up and keep fighting before the end of the knockout count

In brief:
- Surface TFs couldn't engage the KB or its fragments
- Palmyra's fragments managed to send several strikes, but these were all piecemeal, inefficient
- Saratoga, alone, fought against what was left of the KB and score several hits, but also received many. The ship is doomed, I believe
- The other 3 carriers disbanded at Palmyra, but they are still on fire from last turn, I don't know if they would manage to extinguish the fires to fight another day
- I believe Shokaku sank on AM phase, and at least another one sank later on, my best guess is Soryu, but after the slugfest, it can be almost any Japanese KB carrier
- I don't see the KB carriers returning to Truk, it looks like poor Mexico.. "so far away from God, so close to the United States"

RE: Feb19.42 the KB is destroyed

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

we had discussed the game and I asked him if he wanted to continue, he said yes
he said that although he feels demoralized for the loss, he wants to continue

This shows that the KB is not invincible, with enough handicaps given by the Japanese player, the Allies can reach a position of parity or near parity
some of the handicaps given:
- fight on American controlled/ patrolled waters
- with depleted torpedoes after 2 days of hunting
- after losing ~30 Zero fighters against Palmyra's CAP
- alone (no friendly TFs in support)
- with poor naval search capabilities
- next to a L2 Allied airbase
- very near Pearl Harbor (2 turns away at full speed)

even with these handicaps, I ended with one carrier sunk and three thrashed, two of them burning after 3 turns; Enterprise's fire is out of control it will be gone soon, Lexington and Yorktown should survive, if they reach PH but they won't see battle again until 43

Still the game has changed completely, I just threw away my original plan of defense, which called for fortifying and building places like Kandavu and Hoorn island or Madurai in India. I am now in a race to the coral sea, I need to reinforce and build as far north as I can. I also need to get transports to Australia to move Marines to Port Moresby. as I am now planning to keep it

Feb21.42

Enterprise's fires remain uncontrolled/ growing, it really hurts to see it won't make it. It was only hit by 3 bombs, and it was very poor luck that fires grew from 20s on 1st day to 76 now. Oklahoma also doomed
