RE: WitP 1.3 Patch Update
hehe, comparing CM and SP is not fair to SP.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.

RE: WitP 1.3 Patch Update
OT: how is CM structured: a sequence of preset missions, or can you play a randomized scenario, can the player create scenarios? I've read the FAQ (No user modified unit data, merely playing with the graphics) and so far I'm a little disappointed...

all of the above. you can load a premade scenerio, you can build one, or you can use the quick battle feature which allows you to quickly create battles, customizing it along similar lines to how you do it in SP.
CM breaks down into two phases. The orders phase and the resolution phase.
The orders phase plays like a traditional turn based game, you have as much time as you need to give all your units orders. Once you click done, then the computer resolves the turn *BEFORE* you see it and generates a replay. The resolution phase represents 60 seconds of 'real time' You can view the replay from any angle....pausing, restarting, and rewinding as much as you want till you hit "done" bringing you back to the orders phase. You can *only* observe during this phase.
Its a neat system that eliminates the biggest issue i have with RTS games. Because the computer resolves the turn first then generates a play back that you control like a VCR tape, you dont have to worry about missing any of the action. You can replay the turn as much as you want, focusing on each event that happens whether its a routing of your infantry on one part of the battle or having one of your Shermans brew up from a hidden Panzershrek all the way on the other side of the battlefield.
Harder than hell to get used too though if your used to the continuous control feel you have with SP. Works great for PBEM though i've yet to try it personally.

Pre-made scenarios or operations. Operations are a number of battles fought over a large map where your progress is tracked and remembered between the fights. Then there are quick-battles, where you get to specify everything from points (to purchase units for) to map to time of day to length etc etc.ORIGINAL: steveh11Matrix

CM has the most advanced and impressive physics I have seen in any wargame. It tracks each shell with perfect physics from start to finish. That means that if you fire a 150mm HE round from an INF gun, and it misses its target, the shell will eventually hit something.
Basically there is no need for user modified data on the weapons, because everything is perfect.
Then the sequence of play is different. Both players issue orders for a 60 second turn, and then the turn is played out simultaneously, so you wont have any ability to "cheat" as in SP.
etc etc, I could talk for hours about the game. Bottom line is Combat Mission Barbarossa to Berlin and Combat Mission Afrika Korps are the best tactical level wargame I have ever seen. And I have played pretty much everything since Squadleader back in 1980-something.

I'm not so sure about that though i'll agree, the level of detail and the research involved is amazing. I've had some odd results though. Have you played that scenerio involving the 1945 retreat of a King Tiger company trying to get back to German lines near the end of the Oder fighting?
I was astounded at the large # of deflections and shell break ups that kept resulting from alot of the point blank range hits between the IS-2's and the King Tigers. I could see the odd result here or there but the sheer # of them really had me scratching my head. (These shots were occuring at under 100 meters at times!)
RE: WitP 1.3 Patch Update
ooh that damn scenario. Ive only played it once, and my KTs were both immobilized by lucky hits from those two 45LL AT guns that start in that ambush spot

RE: WitP 1.3 Patch Update
tough scenerio! i was lulled by the power of having so many KT's in one small area....thought i was invincible.....then the terrain took over....yikes. Had to stick to the road or risk miring in the mud, that and the narrow town roads made it almost impossible to bring superior #'s against the IS's lurking around. At one point i thought i was home free...then my first KT passed a house and the road began bordering a park.....where two IS's were sitting waiting to take me on the flank. Scratch another KT. ouch.
I was starting to win despite this and might have broken through if not for the eyebrow raising large # of odd hit results. More than once i nailed an IS on the front plate at 100m only to have the shell break up. I suppose shatter gap might explain it but the same thing was happening with the big Russian 122's as well.

acually, i kinda liked HOI. i thought it was a fun game. ofcourse it was not strict enough historically for alot of people i guess. there where things i did not like, don't get me wrong..but overall i thought it was ok....now superpower..there was a game i was disappointed with...it had so much potential....it was interesting ...right up to the inevitable global nu cu lur war..
ofcourse WITP is better than all 3!! [:D]

First of all, I beg your pardon if I seem "impatient". It is just that I clicked on the "download" button of Matrix site but the page is not available. Does this mean the patch 1.3 has been finished and posted on the site and that a HORDE of players have ASSAULTED it? That is why I am getting that error message?[:D]

How good is CM:Afrika? I have CM:BtB but had feeling that AK is just an add-on and didn't buy it. Should I get it too?
BTW: Sonalist now is under Battlefront and they palnning to release awesome sim with FFG Perry as playable and SS Kilo and Ocean Hawk.
Check it out.

Yeah, DW is looking like a real time killer; congrats to BFC for picking that one up. Now maybe Matrix can pin down and publish the ever elusive TNH (aka Harpoon 4)?[&o]

I guess they just want too much for the code.

RE: WitP 1.3 Patch Update
They did this for Subsim. The result was some really great mods for Silent Hunter II.[8D]
