RE: Wild Sheep Chase
The fall of Tinian is a true problem imho. Now you really have to keep it closed and bomb the hell out of it with everything you have. You have to force Joc to risk again another massive operation to conquer another mutual-supporting base in the Mariannas...
for sure things have really gone wrong for Japan in the last 6 months...
And reinforce, ASAP, the Bonins now!

I would have said the same about Molu. You've turned that into a problem for him in your game. [:)]
Let's be clear for a minute. The Japanese aren't going to win the war. It's mid-44. All the Allies have to do is load up and head out with all of the CVs into the Pacific. I can't really challenge that now unless he's careless, doesn't bring everything and blunts his spear on LBA before the KB arrives.
Looks like you're jumping the gun a bit here, as Tinian hasn't fallen by the date of this report yet! [;)] It does, but I'll be writing that in a day or two, as I'm 4-5 turns behind in the AAR. Really though, if he's going to bring 3 divisions plus to any spot in the Pacific (and most anywhere else), he's probably going to take it. Tinian is a problem, of course. It's great for him to take it, but at what cost? Not having more than one base there is surely not the best for the Allies. He needs to come again, and I will be adding a bit hopefully before he does.
Playing Japan into 44 against a good player means things will go wrong a LOT. I'm getting used to that. He made some good leaps around New Guinea that I wasn't ready for yet, and that has caught him up. But Burma is still very contested, for now, and he hasn't jumped into the DEI yet, although he's been poised to for a while. I could be in the same position 6 months earlier or more, and a lot of games are. I'm feeling there is a lot of fight left in the Empire and he's got to be a bit careful still.
In good news, the Grace, the D4Y4 and most importantly the Peggy (T) are coming in July.
QUESTION: If he doesn't get within 20 hexes of Saigon, Formosa or the HI when would I get Kamikazes?

RE: Wild Sheep Chase
PS - The past two turns have witnessed 80+ bombers hitting the fields and port of Tinian. My roll-over states 93/90 on the fields/port. He brought a good amount of AA here, so it will be costly, but he can't keep it up for ever and so must reinforce and conquer another one.

RE: Wild Sheep Chase
Very true, but you can still contest him for it. 3xID on a landing ... yeah, he's gonna take it. question is, how beat will he be? Can you reinforce/force an LBA+KB fight there? If your AF"s are built up, this is a good place as you can get a lot of LBA nearby and he has to bring his Armada into range.ORIGINAL: obvert

They are two factors switching on kamikazes (current state for you)
- date at lest 1/44 - (true)
- 20 hex or less distance limit - (false)
both have to be true, so kamikazes will newer happen if You hold him 21 hexes from those places[:)]

That's exactly what I feared. It's too bad there isn't a date trigger as well, but I guess I should count my blessings here and just be patient. I should have a good number of pilots by the time I finally do get them going.

re:Kami: I don't know that there is a date trigger, I only know of the range trigger ....
My plan was to try to bring the KB in and reinforce in the Marianas if he landed, but the amount of firepower he brought meant I couldn't get near the islands on the water and the fields and ports were shut immediately, so no flying things in. By the time the armada pulled back the base was in dire straits with forts reduced, so there was no point to add stuff that would just be killed off within a week.
I had thought he would land about two divisions on two islands. That would have been okay, and he would still be fighting there to a draw as the LBA would have kept the Allies from endlessly bombing the troops into dust and the KB would have appeared if the Allied air power was weakened. Now I have to prepare for the same kind of contingency. I have some troops moving down now to reinforce Rota, Guam, Pagan and Saipan plus a bit for the little bases on the Northern Islands. I need 10-14 days. If I have that, I might be able to close the door for a good while.

Because kamikaze was desperate weapon. Japan was losing in all fronts, enemy was very close to Home Land, There was no time to train properly pilots in bomb , torpedo attacks so kamikazes concept show up. Les training required tactic with good chances of success. I You in `45 will hold allies 20+ hexes from Japan that mean You are not need desperate solutions.
Use that time to build kamikaze pilots and planes pools.

I know, I know, koniu, but it sure feels desperate right now! [:D]
Even when I have kami I might not use them as pure kamis anyway. I like some of the ideas Capt Cruft has about using regular bombing and letting them dive in if damaged 'for the emperor.'
The downside of kamis is that fighter pilots will also begin ramming, which I've heard is not entirely successful and loses you some good pilots.

Since a lot of readers probably know the score already from Jocke's AAR, I'll try to catch up to the current turn today. I'll see if I can get some screenshots as well, as there are some very active areas right now, especially Burma, the could have some major developments in the next few days.
SUBS: About 5 US subs are playing cat and mouse with our Es in the area around Molu to Lautem. We found the Trout both days, or it found us I should say, but missed an E and then a DD. No return hits on the sub either.
S/SW PAC: Ouch! A good strike of 59 Jack and 28 Judys went after ships at Biak today, but was almost completely destroyed by the Spits and P-47s flying CAP. Only 7 bombers got through and hit nothing. I'll have to turn things off around here until the next phase looks ready to begin. He's got too many engineers in Biak now and I can't keep those fields damaged without insufferable losses. I have to focus on the big moves and stay on top of the tea leaves.
NORTH PACIFIC: Nothing further.
S DEI: Sweeps hit Lautem. A horde of P-38s plus Corsairs focus on Lautem and the supporting Tojos from Dili don't help out only one hex away ([&:]), so the Franks are left with only a few Nicks in support. They come through with flying colors though, and get positive results against the first few waves before getting worn down. Numbers are key here, and the 49 plane groups downs a bunch of Lightnings and a good number of Corsairs as well. No bombers hit today, so the fields are fine, but 2/3 of the Franks are damaged. Now LR CAP from Lomblen will try to hold off the next strikes and let the Franks recover. Fingers crossed. He can't be happy to be getting these results far from home where those pilots simply end up splashing while many of ours end up WIA.
BURMA: The Allies are still pounding Rangoon to hit supplies and keep the fields closed. I'm in favor of this, as I can get supply to flow from Bangkok and Mergui. A big shipment is on the way from Nagasaki, and small ones are continuously moving from the DEI to the Mergui/Tavoy area.
Jocke did hit Pisanoluke today, the first time he's hit a deep base like that. The Tojos did very well there early on but were overwhelmed after 5 sweeps came through (plus another 4-5 after that I didn't include in the reports). On the day we get about 1:1.5 for the sweeps but lose a bunch on the ground. I'll take that though, as these are the best of the Allied fighter groups.
His troops do indeed look to be switching it up and heading for a right hook through Prome. I've got some troops heading through the clear hex as a distraction while others are railing from Toungoo. Either could be a disaster from Allied bombing runs, but I have to get there and must take the hit. I have troops moving every direction from the 56, 51 hex to hopefully provide some doubt as to what is really going on, and I will stagger the strat movement to hide it better as well. The only fear is getting caught in strat mode in the clear hex. I think they should shoot through to Pegu at least though, and most likely all of the way to Rangoon in one turn. Tense times!!!
CENTRAL PACFIC: Tinian moves one step closer t falling. The troops there wear the Allies down a bit, which I hope will help once it does fall to make sure we can bomb effectively and his fatigue stays up, maybe even moral and disruption being affected.

RE: Wild Sheep Chase
If Tinian is packed with AA, the best way to burn his supplies and keep it close is to place a couple of BB TFs at Guam/Saipan, and pound it every single night. Do you have some AKEs in the Mariannas? I think he didn't have the time to place too many mines at Tinian. Bomb the hell out of it and pack the rest of the Mariannas with LBAs...sooner or later he will have to come back to rescue those brave marines... and that's when you could make him pay! The Kb + the LBA can wreck any allied CVTF...remember the 200 firing passes rule... even if he has 2000 fighters on CAP a single coordinated big strike can sink a whole bunch of CVs. Don't be too scared![;)]

At lest in beta number of pases depends also from numbers of planes involved in battle.
More planes more that 200 pases.
I think new code is adding number that fraction of planes involved in battle to 200 pases. Increasing that number

Thanks GJ. Sometimes at this stage I need a bit of encouragement for sure. It's scary out there!
Step 1. Give him a sight of the KB hanging around the DEI. This is for two reasons; one to give him pause about a move from OZ, and secondly to deceive about where those ships are going while also topping off fuel and planes at Dagua. Simultaneously get air units healed up and filled out and more strike planes nearby in the Marianas. While that happens I'll bomb Tinian and bring in some BBs as GJ suggests. The closest 2 AKE are at Iwo but can move down to Pagan.
Step 2. Lose the KB near the PI for a day or two before posting them a day away from the Marianas to the NW of those islands, well out of search range and out of the densely packed sub zone as well.
Step 3. Land more troops on Guam, Rota, Saipan and Pagan, with possibly some for the three smaller North Marianas islands if there is time, with support from the KB. I have one free division, several brigades and regiments that have just arrived. If I can get those bases to 700 AV plus, even three divisions won't work too well. Those already have some DP and arty guns. I have one surprise, in that the Wake CD gun unit is back in shape and moving down. I think I'll put that at Rota, the weakest of the bases, if I can. Tinian had the lowest forts of any of the main islands and the others should all be above 5.
Step 4. Be ready for the armada when it comes. I defended the bases last time with only minimal strikes hoping to ware down the Allied CV air and be able to move in with the KB. He did lose almost 350 CV planes in the first invasion through strikes at small shipping, sweeps and ground strikes. I'll try to look like I'm doing the same, then move a bunch of strike planes in just before the KB arrives, if that's possible. He could try to shut down my bases this time, which is entirely possible and in my opinion the best Allied move pre-invasion, but Jocke is wary of losing CV planes against land targets. He's been burned in a CV battle before and doesn't want that to happen again, so my feeling is he will just cover and sweep a bit, but not send in waves of bombing to shut the main fields.
UNKNOWNS:
Is he coming soon? Or is he switching gears for another option, like continuing the push in New Guinea or the DEI, and would he need CVs for that? Does he have the other islands prepped, or is he waiting from troops to be released from Tinian and other New Guinea holdouts like Aitape, Noemafor and Biak?
We've talked about changing to the current beta at the end of the month, meaning the beginning of July/44. In 10 days from the current turn. That could help me in some ways and hurt in others. It might dull LBA strikes against the Allied fleet by splitting up more of the packages. I've got three HQa on the Marianas, so there is support there, but I've not played the new beta so I don't know.
Also, as koniu points out the strike pass rules have changed, so maybe both fleets will also be more protected. If so I could place the KB one hex off Guam and Rota, and let the extra 350-400 Franks, Georges and Tojos (plus those at Tinian and LR CAP from another few bases) there also take part and provide CAP. It could mean the CAP over the KB is stronger than over the Allied CVs in reality. And if he takes more than a month, I'll have at least some Grace and Judy '4' in the mix. We'll see.

I thought I heard that too, maybe to 300 passes? Either way, with the coordination advantage removed, LBA likely won't go from several bases, or even one base, in a single big strike. That could be painful against a CAP of 600-800 planes. I assume he's starting to get Corsairs on those ships now as well. Yuck!

Luckily the wave of sweeping Lightnings that come all together in a mass of 95 planes come last. I don't care if it's called 'coordination' or 'cooperation,' it's damn effective.
Lautem is now shut, so Dili will have to hold until the engineers can get it going again. A few more groups are brought in to nearby bases to augment the Tojos stationed there. The remaining 15 Franks at Lautem will remain there, damaged.
BURMA: Jocke uses B-29s to go for Rangoon fields at night. Great to have them hit here instead of nailing the oil, but if this were a base with planes in it, that would suck. Too easy to decimate any hope of defense on pinpoint night strikes.
Jocke's troops have already gotten to Prome and are now moving toward Rangoon. This will be quick and dirty and I know I wouldn't hold here for long against what he is bringing. I just need a while to get the other troops over. The first are going through in strat mode tomorrow. There is also a group of units now in the clear. If he goes for them there will be a tussle in the air, as I've moved in some cover to Pegu and other bases nearby.
CENTRAL PACFIC: Allied forces capture Tinian. So, the bombing starts tomorrow. I have the KB moving toward Dagua. Once replenished some BBs will break off and begin the bombardment runs also. Support ships will move from the Bonins south.
This is make or break time. The fields were over 50% damaged when the base fell, and the port at about 90% damaged. If I can keep the fields closed until the BBs arrive, then give a few good poundings, it might even be tough to land more support or replenish the base. That is the hope anyway.
An Allied TF is spotted moving South of Wake. No idea what it is, but the rollover shows CA at least.

Not that i'm aware of.... [X(][X(][X(]
Yuck!
The 200 pass rule still persists AFAIK.
It was increased somewhat (don´t remember by how much) in a specific beta file only released for tests and for the specific situation encountered in GJ vs. rader´s game. No idea if it was ever used by them, but anyways, it definitely did not make it into the 'official' betas. Increasing the pass limit is not required with the coordination bug resolved in the later betas (or with players adapting accordingly FWIIW [;)]).

RE: Wild Sheep Chase
Cool. Thanks for the clarification.
It will help me against 4E and the massive B-25D-1 raids that en masse fight off any interceptors. At sea it might give the Allies the historical 'big blue blanket.' Still not sure when we'll upgrade yet.
