You have to assume that the people authorising the purchase actually saw them play and thought they were worth the money.
I know instances when a club just bought a "star player" on a recommendation. Another where they bought him after just watching a video montage. They didn't even watch an entire match. Just the best part of several matches. I bet on that they can get plenty of players look like a world class player in a montage.

Having a good team who decide on what players to buy who also considers how the player would fit into the club is very important. But, unfortunately, that do seem to disappear when they have to much cash on hand. [:(]

Edit: And the transfer window closing when the club needs to buy new players and they have not been able to sign the players they wanted makes for strange purchases.

Or you can do as Ipswich, and fail to sign Diego Maradona, Ruud Gullit, Paul Gascoigne and John Barnes [:D]

Chelsea has done rather well so far this season. Is this just the result of parking the bus? I haven't really seen how they play this season.

Sssshhh... don't tell TD [:D]

I haven't really been watching them either. I think that they have played more attacking football (based on the scorelines) - simply because they have such a good team. No doubt when the situation calls for it - away to Manchester City or Real Madrid for example - he will play a defensive, counter-attacking game, but then that is the quality of a great manager; he has plans B and C to call up.

I was rather hoping for a comment by TD. [:)]

The usual sense of foreboding is upon me. Yes, it's the football Christmas fixtures - that time of year when teams whole seasons can evaporate [:(]

Tottenham have bottom club Leicester City (usual Tottenham banana skin) and then top club Chelsea followed by Manchester United [X(] Then, at the start of December, it's the FA Cup 3rd round. In a repeat of the 1962 Final we face Burnley.

I fear the worst........l

Fun, fun, fun. [:)]

Even if there is a feeling of dread before the matches.

Here the next football match is months away. [:(]

As a wise man once said "It's a funny old game in'nit?"

7 points from the Christmas games and back above Arsenal! That is as good as it is unexpected [:)]

Was a nice game this afternoon, watched and enjoyed sitting on a warm couch in cold Germany.

Fun that our morning TV they have shown clips from the recent Tottenham match. Every 30 min they have shown the goals. Plenty of times in other words and since it was plenty of goals that is a lot of Tottenham.

So Jermain Defoe signs for Sunderland - just in time to make his debut for the Black Cats against..... Tottenham [:@] Why is that a problem? Well he happens to have scored on his debut for every club he's played for.....

Last week it looked to me that a bad penalty call changed the game.

That went well.

So did they play Defoe and he missed scoring?

Chelsea won 5-0 against Swansea. Chelsea do seem to score a lot of goals considering that they play all out defence. [:D]
