[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] A god day on the 19th for ASW in the Banda Sea. Near Damar one SAG ran over the Bowfin which missed the Okikaze. It was then forced to the surface and gunned down. The Hacklebeck took four hits near Lautem. The Herring gave a good account of itself, sinking E No. 7 before taking 34 hits and leaving a splotch of oil on the clear tropical water. The Finback took five hits after missing E No. 1.

The RO-42 nails the DD Taylor with two fish near Biak. The must be one of the damaged ships from air strikes earlier. Every little bit counts.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] Massive sweeps, including one big cooperating one of P-47s, hit Sorong. The defenders gave out some punishment as well, but the Allies won the day. New groups are shifted in now while the others recover.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] More comes to Dili. The defenders here hold at about 1:2.5, shooting down a good number of Lightnings and Corsairs. More units are ready behind to fill in.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Massive bombing of the clear hex near Pegu trashes an infantry division and some other troops. Air battles over the hex result in good kills for both sides, with the Allies of course coming out on top, but the Japanese hitting many P-47 and Corsairs. For the two days the totals are about 130:270 in favor of the Allies. He can't sustain that though with best airframes, especially over Japanese territory exclusively, as all of these battles have been. I am struggling as well, with only about 70 Franks and 40 N1K2 in the pools right now. Yikes. Pilots are scarce as well. Luckily many of my casualties are only WIA after these.

One piece of good news is that the 4k AV of heavily reinforced and mostly dug-in troops have made it into 55, 51 and are preparing for the coming assault. About 80 Allied units are now in the same hex. More reinforcements have railed into Rangoon and will begin moving that way. If he doesn't attack right away, he will lose the opportunity quickly.

I blundered into a shock attack on the road from Toungoo to Taung Gyi. I completely missed the river there. Ooops! [8|] One regiment is trashed, but the other two infantry brigades came through okay, with high disruption. The big Corps sitting there will not do well in an attacking role, so I think we're okay there for now. I'm sending another brigade to make sure.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] Jocke pounds down the remainder of the troops on Tinian. I got a few hits on the runways for only 3-4 planes lost over the two days. The rollover shows 83/67 for fields/port. Got to keep it going. The BBs are on the way.

HEADLINES READ; JAPANESE TROOPS HOLD!!!

Japanese troops hold in Burma in the largest single day of battle yet fought, at 55, 51. Over 11k AV struck out against my 4k AV. The dug-in arty and tank guns did some damage, and the experienced IJA divisions held out for a solid 1:2. I am relieved and surprised to be honest. I thought maybe at this date Allied quality would break through. Not yet I guess.

The Allies lost 2100+ infantry squads disabled and over 400 vehicles as well. Not as many lost, but it'll be a while before another attack. Long enough to reinforce. YES!

The IJ is at 3200 AV and all but one division are solid with little disruption. One brigade was trashed, but even the little tanks held out well.

[font="Times New Roman"]SPECIAL REPORT: BURMA - 21 June 1944[/font]

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]GROUND: [/font] Songs of 55, 51 will echo through the streets of Tokyo and other cities of the Empire over the next weeks. Valiant Japanese soldiers make yet another unexpected stand and halt the massive Allied advance. Jocke's maneuver to get that stack around and onto the Southern part of the MLR was swift and calculated, leaving Japanese units scrambling and vulnerable. Several were crushed by air assaults, but enough made the traverse to bring our AV to just more than the magic 1/3 of his, which will in my experience nearly always hold to at least a 1:2 result in a +2 or +3 hex.

This time I was concerned the Allied troop quality would swing that ratio, but most of the big units (and arty, including anti-tank guns, which I'm starting to think is just as important) had forts built to level 2. This added protection as well as good anti-aircraft in hex, good supply and rest led to a resounding victory (for a day). This battle is by no means over, but if he continues here it might wear his troops down more than mine, as I can bring in fresh units and let others heal up in nearby rear bases.

The supply (-) in the reports is a bit confusing. All of the units in hex are still in the white, and the hex supply is over the necessary amount as well. I do have a massive shipment on the way to Bangkok (60k) and another 20k on xAKLs to Margui/Tavoy. Moumein and Pegu are yellow flagged and Rangoon is red, but a top up should move through within a week. In the meantime the units moving in will get us back to 5k AV at 55, 51, and I'll leave more in the rear as reserve.

My feeling is that this will turn Jocke's taste for Burma sour and he'll begin to move out. This could provide me with some problems as there are still vulnerable rear bases on the Malay coast. I'll begin moving a few brigades back to deal with some of those and get some from the HI as well if they can be spared after the Marianas are pumped up. Air units are on alert and more will be brought to bear in search and naval missions.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]AIR: [/font] It was another big day in the air. Our fighter units are at the breaking point, but there are still some fresh in the rear to add in if needed.

Today I've included all air battles below just to see the scale of what happens here every day. Many sweeps hit my fighters over the clear hex near Pegu, but we take our toll, probably at around 1:2.5 for ~45 Allied fighters lost on the day. He can't keep that up with his pools.

The bombers go for 55, 51 but at 6k where flak is strong. He loses about 10 on the day according to reports.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SEA:[/font] Supply is still moving here, but only as far as Mergui/Tavoy. Rangoon/Moulmein are a no go zone now. Subs still form and early warning blockade at the entrance to the IO and more deeper Glen subs patrol for possible invasion warnings.

The bases in Burma that remain are listed below. The Japanese influence here is very constricted and the Army leaders are planning a slow, fighting withdrawal. This will occur once it appears Allied forces are also moving back, with the exception of several brigades that will move by land to the rail and go to fill in areas of the Malayan coast. The two major defensive hexes, 55, 51 and 56, 51 will maintain units dug-in and appropriate to the level of Allied response in this area. The hex 57, 51, where the unfortunate shock attack occurred against a fully filled out Chinese Corps will maintain only enough to thwart about 1500 AV of Allied troops, or double what is there now, incase he reinforces.

Thai units withdraw in just over a month now. This won't be too much of a problem, but it will force a few garrison decisions in Thailand and Malaya especially. Burma will likely drop to about 8k AV as the territory that we need to cover has shrunk, and possibly less depending on Allied moves.

There is one surprise I'm contemplating, but I won't pull the trigger until I have more information and the units moving from the Toungoo area have all arrived safely in Rangoon.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] Aitape is bombed. It looks like he's moving troops overland both into this base and into Wewak. The Aitape troops could hold for a while, but the Wewak forces are very low on supply, even though the AV there is still almost 400. The Allies DA at Kiriwina Island and get a 1:3 (!!) which continues to amaze me. The troops there must be driving bulldozers thought the front line and starting to incorporate local blow-dart guns to their arsenal of infantry weapons. I'm also not sure why Jocke is bothering with this stuff. I guess my plan to make the rear areas a continued needling threat may have payed off.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] More big battles over Dili. Again our fighters do well, maybe getting about 1:2 here over our bases. Unfortunately the unstoppable 2E armada comes in, unescorted, and the over-powered defensive armament of the strafers damages all fighters before they can make a run at any of the bombers. I watched the entire replay this time and it was incredible to see that the moment a fighter would begin closing on a bomber, usually from the front, it would get chewed up and have to pull out. It would be incredibly rare in reality to have those guys coming in from directly in front where those 4-8 fixed guns could be brought to bear.

I've just read that against B-24s Oscar pilots did often attack from the front at an angle of about 20-30 degrees, as only one forward 50 cal could be brought to bear on this vector. They were very successful with these attacks which made the USAAF change it's doctrine of sending bombers in unescorted. In these cases on B-25 strafers there are no flexible forward guns that could have been brought to bear, but instead the 58 defensive gun rating uses the fixed guns as possible defensive weapons. Silly, and when there are 150+ of these in a group, no amount of fighters can touch them. All Allied players should take note and take advantage.

That's another rant, yes. Of course the Allies should be able to use these planes as intended with flak suppressing strafing guns, para-frags and almost complete surprise in order to get the same results, so I'll get off my wagon and move on. [:D]

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] Tinian is hit by nearly 100 bombers for little damage. It's still severely hampered and can't support flight ops, but no planes have yet been moved in anyway. I'm waiting for Cats here, but maybe he's afraid to lose them to so much CAP around and port bombing. It'll be 4-5 days before the first BB bombardment has a chance to get lined up. Another IJAAF Helen group with 70 skilled bomber pilots will be added to the mix.

Here is yet another look at the economy. I just checked with tracker and realized my armaments pool is nearly the same as what is needed for new units coming in during the rest of the war. That means I'll keep it going until I am at least 25k over that amount and then switch it off completely to begin really building HI for the final push. My goal is still 3 million HI in the pool by 1/45. There are about 190 days left in 44. If my current input just continued to go into the pool (~4k a day) that would be 760k. Subtracting 6 x 50k for pilots and I'd have 460k. Just enough to get over 3 million. [:)]

Supply has taken a massive hit lately, dropping from over 4 million to 3.6 million globally. While some HI/LI have been hit which contributes to this in the outlying parts of the Empire this is largely due to increases and changes in aircraft and engine production. After another month those factories should be mostly sorted with only a few minor changes before about 12/44-2/45 when I anticipate many of the very late war fighters and bombers coming online. I've decided to let all R n D factories from here on convert to production rather than trying to change them to help advance the latest planes another month ahead. I have to get there first and that will take a herculean effort in the air.

The fuel issue is not improving of course. Unless I lose the fleet it will continue to go down, especially as I lose more oil to strat bombing. I may consider when and where there will be a decisive battle to take as much down as I can on the way out. If I can get significant CV losses against the Allied fleet that could hamper later effort off of Japan. We'll see. I'd need to sink about 7-10 CVs to really affect his chances later and that may not be possible. The chances will only get worse as time goes though. Sometime soon a choice must be made.

Yes, and it has to be orchestrated if it is to happen. With lots of LBA around. Otherwise keep it all close by in port and show it every once in a while.

After several attempts to load mines onto my minelayers, subs and other mine capable ships with no success I was about to post about the issue. While looking at the pic of the mine pools I realized that the stockpile toggle was switched to 'Y.' Crap!! [:D]

For the past few months I've not been able to mine and i just didn't notice this. I can't see why I would have ever clicked that, but I must have either intentionally (read 'stupidly') or by mistake.

So now I have some good mine pools! What to do with them?

Some will be moving down to the Marianas both for offensive use at Tinian and for defensive use at other bases. Lautem and Dili will be mined, as will Sorong and small offensive fields.

The newest use of mining will be air dropped mines. I seem to remember that bombers dropping mines won't be hit by CAP for some reason? I don't know if this is true, so the first will try at night at Akyab where at least one SAG and some transports are posted. I'll also try around Biak, and I'm bringing some G3M3 to use at Darwin soon. I think I'll also post some minelaying subs around the Marianas and once the fleets come back I'll mine the approaches to see what I can hit open ocean. Fun!

(Until the Allies start mining my ports with B-29s!) [:D]

I lost 9 Franks here though, and reports state 3 B-29s shot down, one lost to ops. I'll take that. Only 4 pilots KIA, 2 WIA. He hasn't hit Sian. I have 45 Nicks on night CAP there. That will be interesting. [;)]

The Oil here is down to 20 (70), so it's diminishing. I'm feeling the pinch as most Manchurian HI went offline the past few days as Port Arthur, Keijo and Fusan won't give up their fuel and there isn't much excess around. I'm sending 25k from the HI to top off until a shipment from the DEI comes in.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] Mostly bombing of Aitape and rear bases. Namatani falls at last. Kiriwina is bombed again, and Noemfoor is bombarded and should be attacked soon. These troops are now mostly out of supply.

Allied CVs move slowly by Truk. They are 5-6 hexes away, either trying to pick off as many search planes as possible on the trip past or planning something here or farther North. Maybe it's a delay to see if my CVs show up in the Marianas, which they won't. [;)] I can't reinforce until this is far South though, so transport will be halted in two days unless there is movement. Then the KB will be brought in for one big push and LBA will be all fighters with strikes coming from the rear at Truk in the form of 150 2E bombers escorted by about 200 fighters.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]NORTH PACIFIC: [/font] A sweep over Dutch had no opposition. I'l go back to bombing.

I thought they had a good sighting, but I've noticed no changes in deployment and no drop in troop numbers on land, so maybe not. Dili and Lautem are still shut, and have no hope of opening as he continues to crush them. As long as he focuses on those I'm happy as the strikes will come fro mother bases further back.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Strikes hit 55, 51 again, this time from 10k which only gets his planes damaged by flak, but reduces effect as well. Hardly a dent in the troops. He also bombards showing the extent of damage to Allied troops. Mine will be augmented tomorrow by another 150 AV brigade and in 2-3 days by an infantry div, a tank division and another big brigade. The shattered brigade will move back. That should leave me with about 4.5k AV in in the hex within a few days. Plenty.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] Tinian has bout 27 hits put on the fields, but they're down to 67 damage in my rollover. I need the BBs here soon. Transports are about 3-4 days out. I'll back them off and consider landing everything North of Saipan if opposition looks imminent. I can continue flying in trips to Rota and Guam. Just not CD guns. Jocke has had some electrical difficulties! He is an electrician and has had to put in extra time lately, so the game has not moved in a few days. Itching to get back into it. I need to do some serious planning on next level defenses. I've started to get worried now that his CVs are moving into visible territory on a path that could lead anywhere from the S DEI to North New Guinea/Moluccas to Babeldaob, or even right back to the Marianas.

Some steps that must be taken within the week:

1. Move more garrisons to Marianas with support from IJN.

2. BB bombardment of Tinian.

3. Allocation of existing and arriving troops to the next line in Manado, the Moluccas (which already have some defenses), Mindanao and the PI.

4. Bringing some troops back from front lines in Burma to garrison areas the Thai unit will leave unprotected once they withdraw, and to the Malay coast.

5. Prepare for massive realignment of air groups with 12-15 withdrawing on July 10, and only 7-8 arriving.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] The Shark II had been hanging out at Guam. I sent in Es and one was hit and sunk, but the Shark II took 18 hits. Two more subs are at Tinian. I'll send in the remaining two Es to aslo test the mine situation and whether the CD guns will fire at the ASW ships.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] No movement. I mined Biak from the air and immediately got two PT hits. So at least I know it works. I might have waited for a better target here, but this will actually make him have to think about it which is almost as good as a hit. Noemfoor was bombarded on the ground, and an attack might be imminent there.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]NORTH PACIFIC: [/font] Another single port hit on Dutch fro the Helens. Very ineffective bombing!

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] No change. Troops still show about 120k at Darwin. Our fighters are trying to recoup losses and pilots. The Allied bomb and close Saumlaki again without opposition.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] A bit of a tussle in the air. Franks and Georges take on sweepers over Rangoon. The results are 1:4 in the favor of the Allies, him getting 38 Franks and 11 Georges for a reported 18 P-47s. By the time bombers arrived there was little CAP left and they had their way, closing Rangoon and dropping supply a bit. Big shipments are unloading now, so it will likely be flowing into Burma within the week. Another bombardment at 55, 51 loses 30+ guns for the Allies for a few IJA vehicles shot up. AV is now up to 3900 in the hex with a division moving one day away. There is 2200 AV in Rangoon as reserve.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] Troops are moving on the Marianas bases. The Wake CD guns are a few days out fro Rota. The Allied CVs continue slow progress South of Truk, moving 2-3 hexes a day. Just killing search planes, or is there anther more devious reason for this sow progress? He could be waiting for my transport to arrive and dash in to sink them at Rota and Saipan. It'll cost him if he does.

In the HI 5 brigades are loading, 3 more coming out of strat mode about to load, and a free division is also about to load up, likely bound for Davao. At sea 4 brigades are already sailing South.

The port mining does work. The only results were a couple of PTs, but it functions as it should.

I had the ability to do this quite a lot earlier but somehow toggled 'Y' to the stockpile column in the devices page, and then the mining was grayed out. If yours is gray take a G3M3 group and find larger port that is in range of an Allied port for that model. I can't remember the perameters anymore but there is a thread in the war room somewhere from a few months ago about it.

The Bonins are getting garrisons from the new units just arriving. I know. It's late. I have about 50-70 AV in each with engineers and I'd like a division equivalent there. I'll flip the bases to 'General Defense' HQ soon and use some of the troops in the HI to fill them out.

The PP system is really static and doesn't take into consideration the state of the game. All of those divisions in the HI that arrive in 44 are simply sitting hen they should be garrisoning the islands that without conquering it would be next to impossible for the Allies to get to the HI! So the ones in transport range I'll change to general defense if they are not already and fly more troops down.

I'm hoping they'll also start doing the diving on ship thing if damaged during a naval strike! [:)]

I'm not fond of it either, but it might be unavoidable. Some of the arty can fly and the brigades are all good to go.

What about CD guns? Obviously Chichi-Jima has some but the others?

That will likely have to be done with standard arty. Not ideal. The large base force for Iwo will have 4 x 8cm DP guns that can add in something as well.

If only the stock game used up all of the old naval guns in new CD units like RA then it would be easier. But part of the fun is trying to make due in Scen 1 with not enough to go around anywhere.
