The allies are moving some units back from this location and I'll have to keep and eye on their destination.

Troops land at Saipan and tomorrow should arrive at Rota and Pagan. The Allied fleet is spotted near the Bismark Sea. Several more brigades leave the HI for this area, for manado and the Moluccas and for Mindanao.

You should try DBB... japanese DCs are so useless that even in shallow waters it's impossible to sink any sub... and in deep waters all the allied subs can dive deeper than any japanese DC[:o]

You should try DBB... japanese DCs are so useless that even in shallow waters it's impossible to sink any sub... and in deep waters all the allied subs can dive deeper than any japanese DC[:o]

I know it's more realistic that way, but I also wonder if that lets the Allied player get lazy. The kills I'm getting could easily be avoided. I'd like to try it, but I also think there should be some chance for the IJ player to improve on japan's poor ASW effort.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Another couple of subs are sitting stationary at a dot base in DEI, Wetar, where I'm patrolling two SAGs. I've sent in the Es, and they got a few hits today. We'll see if he keeps them there and basically sacrifices the subs tomorrow.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] Most air dropped mines have been cleared at Biak by YMS there. not a great success, but it sets a precedent at least. I'll aim for other offensive mining in future invasion areas. I want to get subs loaded with mines to the DEI ready for the Allied fleet to move in. A collection is beginning to gather at Singers, Manila and Soerabaja.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]STRAT BOMBING: [/font] B-29s went again for Lanchow and the Franks were decimated there. I lost 19 at night out of 28!!! I'll give up volume use of day fighters on night CAP as that's definitely screwed. Night fighters flew in to protect the remaining 11 oil points here. I loaded up two night fighting groups at Medan as I'm sure that will be hit again soon too. In spite of Franks challenging nearly every wave, no bombers were shot down and only two lost to ops.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] Babar is nailed by everything the Allies have, including about 5-6 groups of DBs. Still no troops loaded at Darwin. This is good in a way, giving my groups at Lomblen a chance to recover in their LR CAP of Dili, which is nearly operable again.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] The Allies hit Rangon hard again. There is also a bombardment by what feels like all of the Allied stack at 55, 51. The sides take almost even losses, with a few more guns and vehicles destroyed on the Allied side. They have pulled about 2.5k AV out and back to Prome. Now I have to keep and eye on where that stuff goes next.

I'm sending 3 more brigades back, keeping a reserve of 2k AV in Rangoon, 1.5k AV on the road from Toungoo, and some extra in Pegu and Moulmein as well. I have to get ready for the Thai to withdraw in a month and garrison ports in Malaya. It feels like he'll try something new now that the blockade has worked and the Allies suffered a bloody nose there.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] Several TFs land troops at Rota, Saipan and other northern Marianas bases. The Wake CD guns are on Rota now. Yes! That will surely help.

I found one of the units Cruft mentions, which is on Yap. I'll pick it up and send it to Iwo, which is far more important and could really use the DP guns later. There are now decent CD guns on the remaining big marinas bases. I feel slightly better here now. Air raids also get much better results on the fields. I might need to recon more here to get even better. What stumps me is that the Helens with the best ground bombing pilots, all over 75 in ground bomb skill, are getting virtually now hits.

I still have some stuff there but Cruft has got me all concerned about the Bonins, probably for good reason. I'll replace it with another unit that's in Tokyo now, but it just won't have the CD guns. Iwo deserves those.

I had the zero line running and thought; "why change it now?" I had to research up to the A6M5c for the KB planes, (but I'm only using a few of those groups now, most are A6M5b). I may not build the M8. It won't make any difference to change the factories now to something else, but it would cost supply, so I'll leave the two factories until that is completed, then see if I even care to build it then. Most likely not, but the it's good to have an option.

I'm doubting whether I'll be able to keep all of the factories on that are in R n D and production right now. I'm still scrambling to get engine numbers up for the Ha-45, Ha-32 and Ha-33. I'll be switching one of the Ha-34 to the Ha-43 soon as the Tojo will phase out of production.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] Kicking myself today. I had a small chance to mine Finchafen, where Jocke apparently sent the main CV fleets for at least a day. I sent two Helen groups to an open Rabaul, but they did not fly. I neglected to send fighter cover (doh!) and 45 Venturas bombed the base. Man, a wasted opportunity all around. Lesson learned. Could have torched about 25-30 of those.

The Allied fleet either docks at Finschafen or moves up to Dagua, or both. Some CVs are at Dagua at least. Units near babeldaob will attempt to move to the Ternate/Manado and Talud Eilanden areas to reinforce those bases. Dagua will get some in a few as well as Dadjangas. There are so many dots in these areas though it's next to impossible to defend anything really. I'll just try to make the bigger bases difficult and attempt to suppress the smaller ones if he takes them.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] Lightnings sweep Lautem and our LR CAP over Dili intercepts. Reports say 21 Lightnings lost for 28 of our own. Those are numbers I like! Tomorrow will undoubtedly include Corsairs, so I'll pull back, recover and try again soon. No troops loaded at Darwin.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Small strikes hit Rangoon. This is all fine. Supply is low so not as much is getting destroyed. He's using a lot of sweeps, but I'm learning that many days they don't come before bombing. Once we change to the new beta I'll get some challenges up in the air and see what we can do. Groups are resting and filling out pilots and planes in Bangkok now.

There was no bombardment by the troops at 55, 51 today. More appear to be moving out of the hex.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] All new units are installed after quick combat unloads. Rota will be a much tougher base after a new brigade and CD guns come in. The forts here could get to level 6 as well, which would be fantastic. Guam is filled with a many units, but some are still filling out. There is a lot of arty and there are CD/DP guns also. Saipan is over 700 AV now with it's fortress and at level 5.6+ forts. Pagan is around 500 AV with level 5 forts and some CD guns. Some of the brigades I've been using here have a good number of anti-tank weapons, and Saipan has an independent anti-tank unit with 47mm guns. Jocke chose well with his timing and his first conquest when he came in at Tinian. The rest of these bases should be much tougher, even with a large landing. I also hope to influence the invasions bit more next time he comes.

The 7th Kure SNLF with it's CD guns begins loading for Iwo Jima. A few other engineer and naval units arrive in the Bonins. I'm curious why Haha Jima is under General Defense HQ while the other two are 4th Fleet? Seems weird and certainly less flexible.

After standing in the rain and cold for a few days watching the baseball team I help coach play poorly I'm left with a head cold and some sadness at lost opportunities. Such is life teaching and coaching teenagers. I'm again a few days behind in updating, but I'll try to get to the current turn by tomorrow as we have a short break in play due to Jocke's schedule.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] After hitting an xAK bringing troops down the Guitarro gets 15 hits and likely is sunk near Daito Shoto. Scamp takes a few hits. Not many other subs around these days. There are a few hanging off of the PI, about 5 total on both coasts. A few in the Lautem area, and just a few in this big area of open ocean South of the HI. One less now.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]STRAT BOMBING:[/font] B-29s hit Hong Kong again at night and took out the HI while crushing the Ki-61-KAI that were trying to serve as night fighters.

One issue I'll be facing soon is that two of the NF groups will be withdrawing on July 10 along with about 15 other frontline units. Bad timing. And they will not be replaced soon. Who's idea was that? I know it's an issue as the Allies to consistently have units withdrawing to Europe, being limited by skimpy production numbers and all of that. This is horrific though for a Japanese player on the defensive. There will be no way to combat the Allies in all sectors during the middle of July as a total of 20+ groups withdraw in the first half of the month, with only about 1/3 of that number arriving during the same period. I'll be short of recon, frontline fighters and 2E IJN bombing groups. Where are the IJAAF NF groups? Too bad I can't convert some other groups to fly these planes, as the three total groups I will have soon just can't protect much of anything.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] Jocke again tries for rear area bases. Too bad he picked this day to bomb Rabaul, as I'd moved in Helens to mine Finschafen. No go nd then the groups were nailed on the ground, losing 9 planes. I moved them out. Rossel Island was also attacked by the NZ N force, which came up against a tank regiment in full supply and got a 1:10 attack! [:D] I DAed the next day for a 1:1 and I'll shock just to see what happens now. Elsewhere on North New guinea some ships look to be gathering for something. I'll likely not contest anything short of Sorong here, letting the ground troops try to stall the advances and building back air groups.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]NORTH PACIFIC: [/font] A few measely hits on Dutch. No Allied opposition. Looks like this area was either a stalled advance or simply a feint. I didn't move much in to contest anything though. Looking forward to the winter. If I can hold any of the Aleutians into 45 this campaign will be an outstanding success for the Empire. All of the Kuriles have level 6 forts and most will be at 200+ AV while a reserve is forming on Hokkaido and Sakhalin to be flown in if needed. Of course he could swamp those defenses if he chooses to do so, but if I hold until 45 here more troops should be available then.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] No movement yet. No troops loaded. Dili and Lautem closed again. Because of the need to withdraw so many groups soon I'll be compromised in defending with air power from about July 5 to July 20. I'm nearly positive something will happen either before or during this time. He's obviously consolidating rear positions, bombing forward bases, getting ships and troops in place, and he can't wait too long to get going. Ambon will likely be the only base with enough power still intact to contest a push in the area, but there are some bases that will be out of range. The main deterrent will be the four separate SAGs in the area, all focused to hit simultaneously throughout the middle of the Southern DEI from Dili to Saumlaki. Babo and Taberfane will be too close to the big Allied bases on New Guinea and too far from air support. They'll have to simply be small speed bumps with MTBs and subs patrolling.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] He's sweeping and bombing the entire area around Rangoon for the first time, hitting Pegu with a massive strike. These are all unopposed as my fighters are recovering and can't contest what he's currently sending over these bases anyway. I have to make him over extend again. I'm covering Moulmein with two big IJAAF groups, and he has never swept or bombed it, so I'll see what happens there. The rest are in Bangkok. The air war is only a supplement to the ground war here, and the ground war is stalled at 55, 51, with other units pulling back to support rear areas and fill in after the Thais withdraw.

I just found that Khota Baru was set to store supplies from earlier in the game (DOH!) and had 30k just sitting there that should have been in Burma. I hope it'll start moving that direction now. Troops on the front are fine, only bases are short and all still have in the 5k range right now. Bangkok is flush at 25k. Another 45k is moving down along the Chinese coast.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] I keep bombing Tinian and getting poor results. I'll bring bombers lower now. The base is listed as 74 percent damage and 67 on the port. The BBs are moving in again and will hopefully do better this time bombarding from a closer range.

I've seen some small shipping moving around from the Jakes flying from Marcus. Looks like pickets again. This perks my ears up. I'll step up search and see if there is a reason for those to be there.

I'm happy about that, mostly because I can now much more effectively surprise his air strikes by moving fighters in and out of bases. This extra Allied knowledge of whether aircraft had moved into a base overnight was the biggest handicap of the official patch for the Empire, and has led to my inability to get to the massed strikes in Burma and the SW Pacific. Added to that the lessened coordination and different support structure, and this should help in the defense of the remaining territory, I hope anyway. Due to the timing, with big withdrawals happening that will suck many frontline groups from the defense of the DEI especially, it'll likely be August before I can contend anything with strength in that area. Bad timing, as he has gotten the CV fleet into position near North New Guinea and looks to push soon. [8|]

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]STRAT BOMBING:[/font] Another strike at Hong Kong only two days after the last. He's picking up the pace. I again lost a bunch of fighters trying to fly night duty here, and maybe got a few ops losses in B-29s. Most of the HI is gone now so I don't need to contest this much further. I got about 2 1/4 years of production from the place, so that is not bad, and he's also bombing this and not oil, which is even better.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] I'm trying something sneaky in the far So Pac area, at Ndeni. I sent in a TF of xAKL to see if they could gather up a unit from there and a bit of supply and get it back to Truk. If so I'll try for more trips to vacate some other islands of forces as he focuses on the front lines.

The 4th Marine Division landed alone at Nabire against 230AV. If forts were higher this could be a holding point. At forts 3 I think it won't take too long.

My DA at Rossel Island went sour, getting a 1:5 in spite of his troops being disrupted and having about half the AV and no tanks. Not sure what is up with that, especially after the first one got a 1:1. Oh, well. Not critical in any way.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] Still no troops loaded. More bombing of our bases.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] The fighters at Moulmein show their worth fighting off three consecutive Corsair sweeps for about 1:1.5 in losses. That's the best I've done against the Corsairs for a while. The groups are shot though so I'll move them back and leave the door open if he wants to continue the tour of Burma bases after nailing Toungoo.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] Still more crappy air strikes and another anemic effort by the BBs at Tinian. I may have to try a daylight bombardment, which is a risk. Not sure show else I can do more damage here. It's still listed as 72 damage to the fields and 87 to the port. This seems odd though as the port has gone up in damage even though I didn't attack it. Hmmm. the DL is 6/10.

I've never been able to get excited about this. Yes, Peggy is a good a/c, but I usually have more than enough 2E IJN groups, I just don't need more. But, I'm not that big of a beleiver of the 2E's for naval attack. My issues:

1. range is of no value as your late war fighters are so short legged. You have no escort.
2. 2E's seem to avoid CAP'd TF's. I've always had poor success in getting 2E's to attack enemy CV's.
3. They are 2x the cost of Judy/Jill and I'd rather use those to attack TF"s.

Just my opinions here ...

I think you're missing one thing Pax. This is an IJAAF plane! [;)]

My experience with 2E IJN bombers has been similar. However, the 10-15 2E IJAAF groups now mainly sitting around training naval search because their expert ground bombing pilots can't really make a dent in anything without annihilating themselves in the process will be much more useful in this capacity.

1. I will actually have many more escorts with the IJAAF groups than with the IJNAF ones as I can use large 49 plane Oscar groups with their more plentiful pilot stream. The combination seems perfect on paper, with the Peggy (T) hitting out to 14 hexes with TT and the Oscar IIIa getting to 14 as well. Most strikes will likely be much closer, but they are matched well.

2. I've had 2E bombers hit a lot of CAP before and get through, although not entirely successfully. The speed of the Peggy (334mph) and the fact that I'm mainly hoping to hit troops moving in which could be under only LR CAP/bleeding CAP could make strikes somewhat effective. Sinking only 2-3 APA could have a big effect on an invasion. They should be decent kamis should I decide to go that route as well.

3. As they are IJAAF bombers I would make some other 2E airframe to fill out my 2E groups anyway, so I may as well make these. The cost is no different than a Helen IIb or Peggy Ia so it is only the factory conversion that costs.

As a further factor, the psychological knowledge that I could soon assemble 300-400 2E TB to launch from a level 9 base (like Manila, Soerabaja, Bangkok, etc) could also be huge. He would have to consider only one big OP at a time guarded by the CVs, which would be a huge win for me strategically. It's like an air force 'in being' that he knows could be moved to any location on the board in two turns.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Wow. Something is definitely up. I noticed a few turns ago that there were numerous one ship TFs at Sarmi. I thought he was creating a bunch of small AMc, PT or YMS ships to thwart air strikes and aerial mining, but it seems I was wrong. Now there are about 25 known subs operating off the Northern tip of New Guinea. This looks like the beginnings of a major fleet operation. Linked with some other events that appear to be coinciding with this move the next few turns could be very interesting.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S/SW PAC:[/font] So. Off the coast of New Guinea there appears to be a CV fleet moving NW toward the Sorong, Moluccas or something else in this direction. Sorong is at 630 AV with 4 forts. Not bad, but in time it would have been about 800 AV when these troops fully recovered from previous engagements. Still, it could be a tough speed bump. The Moluccas are lightly held with about 150 AV at both Morotai and Ternate.

This all looks to be coming at a very difficult time for the Empire. I've been taking advantage of the short break as Jocke is busy to re-organize air groups in preparation for the coming withdrawal of about 1/3 of the IJNAF. The DEI is especially hit hard. There are 3 x TB here, 2 x DB, 2 x 2E TB, and about 10 IJN fighter groups with another 5-7 IJAAF groups. In other words, not enough to dent the US CVs.

The KB is hovering above the Marianas to the NW, out of search range and in separate hexes to hopefully not give to big a sigint signature. The sightings he had near Dagua could still make him believe the KB will be farther South ready to contest landings in the DEI or on New Guinea. It will not. More on that later.

Our fighters at Sorong were crushed by P-47 sweeps. I've moved more in. Fingers crossed.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]S DEI: [/font] Troops have left/loaded from Darwin and I expect this is part of a combined simultaneous operation in at least three, maybe four areas of the map!! Troops went from 119k to 87k in a day. That seems like two divisions if my sh** recon is seeing it right, or at least close. I've got 4 SAGs near Timor. The rest of the stuff to the East will be defended by subs and MTBs with possible strikes from Ambon and possible incursions from surface forces once I see what is here. I have to be wary of CVEs and LBA as I don't have many forward bases to provide CAP for the BB/CA TFs, or potentially the Brit CVs as I haven't seen all of those lately either.

The goal here will be to reduce the amount of troops that can land on Timor. If it's another target, I will try to get to them but won't strain my forces too far away from adequate cover.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Two small TFs have appeared off of Burma near Ramree Island but listed as moving SE, thus toward Rangoon/Moulmein. This is odd. It could be a test of my defenses in the area, a simple CAP trap. It could also be the precursor to an invasion behind the lines in Burma, or at least the feint of one. I'll treat it seriously while measuring forces out to only strike in area when these ships would be dangerous and the invasion would be actually moving into shore. Only subs and MTBs will fight at sea.

I'm fairly confident in the defenses here. Rangoon has 1800 AV. Pegu has 500 AV. Moulmein has 1200 AV. Tavoy has 600 AV. Mergui has 250 AV, and so is the most vulnerable, but also the farthest from Allied air support and closest to Bangkok and other big airfields. Without a lot of LR CAP the highly trained 2E IJAAF bombers would wreak havoc at 1k naval bombing. I could have 150 of those flying within a day. I've also posted a 48 plane DB group closer to the action here and moved two TB groups within a one day range as well. Frances and Bettys could provide a bit more punch. It's not a ton of stuff, but in an area where I can bring a lot of fighters to bear also, I'm confident in being able to at least reduce a landing anywhere on the coast. If the target is the Andamans I could still do some damage, but not as many troops are in those bases, so even landing a division would have serious consequences.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENTRAL PACFIC:[/font] I sent a TF of two E out to hit pickets near Marcus and they got a 10/10 DL today!! Something is coming! The Marianas are on high alert. Tinian is listed as having 97 field damage, and although it's likely not that high, I will forego most bombing for a few days and concentrate on naval strikes. Several groups are ready to fly and more are waiting in the Bonins should something move in that is hittable. Seeing the CVs off of New Guinea as well as the subs there makes me think a big move is happening in that area. If so he could be thinking to reinforce here while I contest that, a FOURTH area under threat.

Instead I will keep the KB near the Marianas where it could possibly thwart any move to drive more troops in or invade more islands here. If I can keep the Allies on only one and eventually shut the airfield, maybe the OP will stall and need more full attention from the CV fleet. Several BB bombardments will move into Tinian including the Yamato and Musashi. The full KB will move to near Pagan, taking two days to complete the transit for all ships. Some could be in range tomorrow, but as I don't know what is coming I don't want to run into a full fleet of CVs here as well with only a piece of the KB. I'll keep them short and shoot for a day two arrival. In the meantime I've moved two Emily groups into the area and sent subs into a screening set of patrols off of Tinian. The BBs are moving down again from Chichi-Jima and should also arrive in two days.

[font="Trebuchet MS"]I'm starting to prepare units in Manchuria to move to garrison the PI, Bonins and Ryukyus. At least another 2 divisions and a few brigades are there ready currently just needing to be bought out. A few more arrive in the HI soon and as I can I'll buy more out from there as well. Mindanao will have about 800AV within the week. Luzon will have as much within the month. Small islands with built up fields will at least get a brigade within two months. There is simply never enough soon enough!!!

Several small 24cm gun [units] [;)] have been earmarked to be bought and sent out to islands to supplement coastal defenses. I'm also hoping the Allied moves on Wewak and Aitape destroy some units so they can be bought and rebuilt in Tokyo. Too much behind the lines now. [/font]

This is tough. I can't see any way to stop invasions to forward areas now that the Allied CV deathstar has arrived in the area. I will even hold off LBA attacks hoping I can use search arcs to aim them at the DEI instead. As usual, for the Empire we must pick our poisons.

My worry is that if he finds the KB out of the area, he could simply keep going. It depends on what is prepped I guess and how much luck he has. LBA will have to be used extensively if anything past Sorong is targeted.
