This shouldn't be too hard, and may not be exclusive: What capital ship survived two nuclear attacks before being decomissioned?

Prinz Eugen?

Correct she is a US BB, she was struck at Pearl Harbor and by a Kamikazee on August 13, 1945. After survivng two atomic blasts in Operation Crossroads on July 1 & 25, 1946 she was towed to Kwajalien and scuttled February 10, 1948.

Her log reports the men as stating they were the first ship to return fire on December 7, 1941.

I'll guess USS Nevada.

No, after Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941 this ship replaced its damaged 5"/51 gun and 5"/25 gun by taking ones from the USS West Virginia.

Are you sure SewerStarFish? I thought there were only two US BB's involved in Crossroads - and the other, Arkansas, was sunk. If I am correct (and I confess I may not be) then this must leave Nevada as the answer.

Mostly sure -- I have two different sources putting this vessel in Operation Crossroads -- and it's not the Nevada or the Arkansas, and from my previous clue it isn't the West Virginia.

During WWI she was not sent to join the British Grand Fleet as she and the Nevada were the first two oil burning US Battleships and no tankers could be spared to be sent to the British Isles. ( those guys must have been playing Convoys in Flames)

Operation Crossroads

The target fleet of 95  vessels included four obsolete U.S. battleships, two aircraft carriers, two cruisers, eleven destroyers, eight submarines, numerous auxiliary and amphibious vessels, and three surrendered German and Japanese ships. The ships carried sample amounts of fuel and ammunition plus scientific instruments to measure air pressure, ship movement, and radiation. The live animals on some of the target ships were supplied by support ship USS Burleson, which brought 200 pigs, 60 guinea pigs, 204 goats, 5,000 rats, 200 mice, and grains containing insects to be studied for genetic effects by the National Cancer Institute. Amphibious target ships were berthed on Bikini Island.

Ships sunk during Test Able:

USS Gilliam (APA-57) Attack Transport
IJN Sakawa  Agano class light cruiser
USS Carlisle (APA-69) Attack Transport
USS Anderson (DD-411) Destroyer
USS Lamson (DD-367) Destroyer

Ships sunk during Test Baker:

USS LSM-60 Landing Ship Medium
USS Arkansas (BB-33) Battleship
USS Pilotfish (SS-386) Balao-class Submarine
USS Saratoga (CV-3) Aircraft Carrier
USS YO-160 steel-reinforced concrete barge
IJN Nagato Battleship
USS Skipjack (SS-184) Salmon-class Submarine
USS Apogon (SS-308) Balao-class Submarine

Yes, USS Pennsylvania:

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Pennsylvania_(BB-38)
War History: 8 battle stars 1 naval unit commendation http://usspennsylvania.org/WarHistory.htm
Pearl Harbor report: http://usspennsylvania.org/Dec71941report.htm (kinda cool)

She survived both atomic blasts at Bikini Atoll. I thought it was interesting that she was damaged on the first day of the war and 2 days before the last day of the war without other serious damaged in between.

If it is from 1941 i suspect it is one of the 4 Iowa class battleships.

I didn't respond to the 10 men question because I'd stumbled on the answer while checking out the Pennsylvania, so --

What ship sank the last combatant vessel of WWII?
