that's the first Allied return strike and we are at least lucky enough they target the carrier group that is accompanied by the CVE so we get a good number of fighters into the air... while the enemy has not flown any nav strike in all the days before Mundy changed his mind after our SAGs engaged his fleet so reacted pretty much as expected... 308 Sams on CAP and the incoming strike is rather meager so I was not really afraid but we still saw three bombers dropping bombs, all missed...

the separated carrier group that reacted also gets some attention and we only have 120 Sams in the air but they were enough to deal with the incoming strike... all three Avengers tried to torpedo on of the two Kongos in the task force...

a small detachment of Avengers also attacks a cruiser SAG at Kendari where we have 300 Georges to cover them... I thought easy prey when the combat plopped up but guess what, with 34 minute pre warning time not a single George attacked the bombers... one was shot down and luckily all were armed with torps which greatly reduced their chance to score a hit...

Allied launch a way bigger strike than in the morning, at least targetting the hex with a good CAP... for whatever reason, our fighters on CAP actually do tangle with the enemy fighters as our fighters didn't turn onto the bombers until every enemy fighter was either shot down or damaged... there weren't enough bombers to see a significant number of them engaging our ships and as stated before, I'm really glad they are all coming in carrying torps... I'm more afraid of a single Helldiver with 1x1000lb and 2x250lb bombs than halve a dozen Avengers carrying torps... nevertheless they even manage to hit a CLAA in best possible weather...

morning strikes and the damage done there pays off as the enemy CAP is down to 300 as our main carrier group launches it's afternoon strike... nothing new here, our fighters were useless, fighter vs fighter engagement was NOT happening... but the enemy CAP was also helpless to fend off the bombers which is at least as surprising considering the all went for the bombers... 2/3 of the bombers getting through and unlike Thunderstorms in the morning we now have heavy cloud which I consider good weather... we get more hits in on the CVE and even Wasp took two 800kg bombs which damages her but it doesn't really impress the carrier it seems... reduced bomb effects in Babes comes to mind...

if not immediately going down I am sure we have killed several CVE at this point alreaday as they are deep in hostile areas and they have a looong way to any major friendly port... up until this point I wasn't all that happy during the combat replay but it seems to pay off to have moved in KB today...

last strike from the carrier group North of Timor... the carriers escorting the Allied main fleet did not take part in the battle today as they were tightly moving with the amphib force... would we have faced all carriers in the area in one blob and have our carriers split up due to an unordered reaction as they did it could have been the end of most of the IJN's carriers...

RE: AAR 1945

Post by castor troy »

Allied main fleet with more carriers was situated West of Makassar ending up nine hexes from my carriers so it was all about the fight against the carrier group North of Timor... seeing my carriers reacting and being split and the destination I have set for them I realized how in fact silly my move was, I should have ordered my carriers way more South to strike NW or W, not being at risk to have to fight both enemy carrier fleets with the maximum possible nightmare of even seeing them being combined...

as it stands now we got away with it dealing solid damage to one of the enemy CVE groups more or less knocking it out, also killing a CVL and dealing damage to CV Wasp... needless to say we have totally wrecked KB's offensive capabilities, losing over 350 bombers (amazing again we only lose roughly 50% of the crews)... the enemy lost nearly the same number of aircraft, a good number of fighters was lost due to ops as their carriers were unable to pick them up after receiving damage...

absolutely depressing stays the fact that we completely lost the ability to deal damage to the CAP with our escorts, just look at the 9 Sams lost A2A... 9 lost when we have like 1500+ engaged during the course of the battle both offensively and defensively? 9? Seriously? Hundreds and hundreds of Sams showed up over the enemy fleet and were able to down perhaps two dozen enemy fighters on CAP, the rest of the enemy fighters was shot down by our CAP... it mirrors the LBA strikes during the last seven or eight turns, escorts just stopped engaging the CAP, nothing happens...

as we have not taken damage to our ships except that torp hit to a CLAA (which is nowhere in danger of being sunk - going to Kendari) and the fact that we have literally taken out a whole CVE group it was still a success today but castor wouldn't be castor if I wouldn't think on how much better it could have worked if my carriers wouldn't have reacted, sent a combined strike and the weather would not have been thunderstorms during the alpha strike... that way we would have most likely not only have destroyed the CVE group but would have also dealt serious damage to the CV TF in the same hex...

the enemy main fleet is closing in on Java and with the Commonwealth landing at Buitenzorg I have no doubts the US fleet is going to land on Southern Java so we have to bring major fleet assets from Borneo to Java which means we will move two cruiser and a battleship SAB from Kendari to Soerabaja under the cover of KB, one cruiser SAG then going North to Batavia to cover the North against the Brits...

we have depleted the Southern Allied carriers of their bombers but the carriers in the North still have all their bombers and something like 500 fighters so KB will be ordered a fully defensive setup tomorrow, having all Sams on CAP, the pityful number of remaining bombers being stood down... that will give us over 800 Sams to defend the fleet moving NW towards Soerabaja... I expect the ships that were damaged today and still afloat to retire South but we will not focus on them as we will have to defend Java now... the plan is to deplete the rest of the Allied carriers of bombers tomorrow, then fly in 400 fresh Graces/Judies onto our carriers and strike the Allied fleet with all we have (land and carrier based) in two days and crush the enemy...

at least that's the plan for now...[:D]

DISASTER! As mentioned yesterday we stood down our few remaining bombers and had a fully defensive setup as we move towards Java to screen Soerabaja with our SAGs... the enemy once again didn't react with his carriers which means they launch a fully coordinated attack, at least our carriers didn't react either today... counting on 800 Sams on CAP we even get 839 Sams on CAP but when the replay started I was just like WOOOOF when I only saw 3!! Sams at the start of the engagement which already looked totally strange for an air combat replay... the numbers were growing slowly and funnilly enough, our Sams were fighting the enemy escorts until 3/4 of them were either shot down or damaged... then the Sams turned to the bombers and I was still very positiv to shred the strike and only see a maximum of a couple of dozen bombers get through... WRONG! No less than 234!!! bombers get through CAP even though we had 300 more fighters on CAP than the incoming strike had aircraft in total and it was the maximum possible pre warning time and range... 234 bombers out of 314 is just totally ridicoulos considering 839 fighters on CAP...

we send hundreds, thousands of fighter escorts on and on and on against the enemy CAP which never gets engaged, our bombers get shred and when we have a 4:1 advantage over their fighters and hundreds of our fighters left to take on their bombers the enemy gets 2/3 of the bombers through? Really, don't know what went wrong, can only be due to the insane numbers the game just can't handle, the replay looked totally weird, all starting with 3 Sams being shown... the whole engagement was extremely short, usually to resolve such a fight you watch aircraft being shot down over an hour real time but this was all over in like ten minutes (probably took longer but still)...

to speak about luck or bad luck again, needless to say that while we seem to attack in thunderstorms most of the time, the enemy gets perfectly bombing weather with overcast... if one would think a CAP of 839 Sams would save the day, no, the only thing that saved the day was the composition of the incoming strike (again) as due to the insane number of CVE we saw mostly torpedo bombers coming in and most of them were armed with torpedoes which saved our carriers from total annihilation... replace the torpedo bombers with Helldivers and I would have lost at least a dozen carriers today, have the torpedo bombers carry bombs I would have lost at least halve a dozen carriers...

but the most frustrating fact today was the strange air combat which just felt borked, I've seen 200 involved aircraft in total fighting way longer than the 1400 aircraft were fighting today, it seemed like an oooops, there you go, the engagement is over, sorry for you... but that's just the same when hundreds of my escorts engage no more than five or six CAP fighters each time, something is so seriously wrong it's way beyond depressing and it always reminds me about how ok it is working until mid 42 but not working at all the time beyond it, getting worse with every year and growing numbers...

lol, really not worth commenting anymore, when we send in strikes, there is no air to air engagement anymore, the fighters are not existing... three firing passes, three Allied fighters shot down, then the fighter vs fighter engagement is over... silly, totally silly...

then there's the afternoon strike and from 839 Sams in the morning we are down to 664 due to the wrecked flight decks but guess what, the whole air engagement looked like everybody is used to... 664 Sams in total, the replay showed close to 500 when it popped up, lots of fighter vs fighter combat, when this was over and due to the still huge numbers of Sams the bombers were shot down in droves... the fighter vs fighter kill ratio was ridicoulos and in the end all but whopping three bombers were shot down... these three still carried torpedoes which all missed but the damage done to KB was during the morning already...

Aircraft Attacking:

So, coordinating 800+ fighters over moving TFs you expect to be able to kill all bombers? We could have a long discussion on how realistic the results are (maybe you should have shot down 200 bombers..) but what you have to consider the difficulty of coordination. More then 1500 aircraft fighting it out in a limited airspace.....

air losses look horrible for the Allied today and they surely have taken their shot and we have depleted them of a good part of the remaining offensive capability but they managed to knock out several of our carriers (more on the damage in the coming post)... what we couldn't achieve with thousands of fighter sorties as escorts, our CAP does today, we down 250 enemy fighters for the known loopsided kill ratio as we only lost 10 Sams today (there are days I lose more Sams transferring from one base to another)... forgot to stand down the Jakes on my ships that got close to the enemy carries and as usual the CAP acts like a vaccum cleaner as 100% of the airborne floatplanes where shot down even though the floatplanes wouldn't even be able to all end up in the same hex due to 360 degree search but that has never been different in this game... same happened to the Allied floatplanes...

Your expectations are unrealistic

lol my expectations?

I'm not expecting realistic outcomes. I've not been doing this for over a decade, probably stopped doing this 2005 in WITP. I'm expecting an outcome the game is usually giving you. Dozens of examples in this AAR alone, hundreds on the forum. Don't try to find a realistic reason or argument, just look at the combat reports.

edit: and no, I was not expecting to shoot down all bombers but the 200 (a tad more actually) like you said was what I was expecting

Re-reading your posts I edited the expectations remark out as it was unfair. This part of the game does play out like rock paper scissors with some variation

Sweep -> CAP -> Escort (serves to protect the bombers not shoot down fighters)

What I do wonder is why not adjust your strategy and tactics to what you know the game can / will do if you are not looking for historical gameplay?

It would be great if:

- Escorts would be better @ engaging CAP
- If you have a huge advantage in numbers (CAP vs bombers) you expect to be more effective @ shooting down the bombers before they make an attack run?

Is that what you mean?

Not sure what you think I should adjust, I have to move the majority of the fleet over to Java, so it's a must to protect it against air strikes. What more than to use all available fighters to defend the fleet could I do with my carriers?

There is no historical gameplay beyond the first weeks in the game, ok, say the first months. Never seen it.

The last two weeks gameplay aside I have never seen my or of any other player's escorts not doing anything. Escorts usually engage the CAP, the CAP usually engages the escorts. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. Literally not engaging it like we have seen it in the last two weeks with my LBA strikes against the carrier CAP (except one day IIRC) is something I've never seen before. And yes, if you outnumber the escorts 4:1 there would be quite a substantial force to attack the bombers right away. The only reason for acting like it does I can see are the numbers. Long ago there was a maximum number of engagements during an air battle but that was patched out but with these huge numbers I wonder if something just doesn't go as it should, like going into a negative and jumping to the next line.

Here are the carriers and the damage done. The most amazing is Zuikaku which suffered during the attacks but shows up with only very light damage. All in all at the moment there is no carrier in immediate danger of being sunk without a follow on attack. The damaged carriers are very close to a safe port and will head to it, the rest of KB will cover the move, all the SAGs will be moving to Java to cover Soerabaja and Battavia. We will still have strong surface forces with the carriers.

The enemy carriers that have been hit yesterday are retreating to the SW and SE of Timor while the main fleet is still East of Soerabaja, looks like Mundy is going to push in at all cost. Our SAGs are in range of Soerabaja and will take position there tomorrow under a heavy CAP umbrella. Main threat now will be a naval bombardment of Soerabaja tomorrow which could take out hundreds of my aircraft.

I vaguely recall a campaign AAR where two players ran into issues with plane numbers. I think it was a game where Japan was invaded from the Aleutian Islands (Hokkaido). I'll try to find the AAR...

Seems like a ton of bombers would get through with that kind of escort even against that kind of CAP. IMO.

That AAR brought up the issue of CAP not being effective in stopping incoming raids. It turned out that each fighter could only make a small number of passes (3, I think) and the total number of passes for all fighters in a combat was too low. One of the Developers (MichaelM, I think) changed the air combat model to ensure there was an adequate number of passes per combat. It appears to be pretty accurate now in abstracting the number of aircraft stopped by CAP and the % getting through.
