the enemy at Blagoveshchensk is not dying away as fast as I would like it to be... only 150 troops less than last turn but they are 100% out of supply for sure and I´m even flying ground attacks... I would like to see them being starved down to only a couple of assault points to move my remaining three divisions out and keep only one of the mongolian cav divisions here to act as a prison guard...

fast turn... our subs still spot TF after TF around Perth... huge buildup going on, I have no more doubt that Perth will be the staging base for the next big Allied operation...

The Frank entered production today! BANZAI! We will nearly produce 700 of this advanced IJA fighter per month. As soon as all IJAAF fighter units will be equipped with this fighter we will build up a stock of 500 aircraft and then we will scale back production to around 350 per month. I will try to move the production start of the c-version by two months to get it 10/44. This will be a real improvement over the a-version as the c has a gun value of 14! Hopefully this will be enough to hurt Allied 4E bombers too.

the first clash between the new American super bomber B-29 and Japanese fighters happens over Derby. I was more than shocked to see 131 of them already as I thought it would take some more time to see the first BGs attacking with "only" 150 [8|] bombers coming out of the factories per month. Obviously the enemy received some bomber groups as reinforcements already. This strike was coming in from Perth, some 1500 miles! I had some ships in port and have been moving in more and more fighters into this area due to an expected Allied operation so the bombers met resistance over the base. With 5 Type 13 radar sets within my base forces we get a Cap rate of 45% [8|]. Boy this really sucks. Cap was set to 80%. If I still don´t get decent Cap numbers (the Allied constantly get 100% Cap even if they set their fighters to a very low Cap percentage) then it´s just hopeless in future. In this case, nearly all bombers turned back, two dozen dropped their load but missed. Would have 50 dropped their bombs and would this base been reconned (or bombed) before then I would probably have lost more than a hundred undamaged fighters on the ground. The B-29 has a durability of 88!!! in Nikmod. This is another 20 more than other 4Es, which we have huge problems to fight. 13 bombers were shot down by fighters and another 2 were shot down by flak directly over the target. Another 20 crashed on their extremely long way home though, bringing up the total bombers lost to 35. Not bad but the insane range and bombload of this bomber will play a massive factor from now on. Dropping 10x500lb bombs on a target 27 hexes away is dropping 2 more 500lb bombs a B-24 can drop at 10 hexes in this mod. And it´s 6 more 500lb bombs at 27 hexes like a B-24 can drop at 14 hexes.[X(]

More engagements will show, but what seems to be obvious in this engagement was the fact that the gun value 12 of the Jack is a notable difference to the gun value 10 of the Tony. The small number of Jacks shot down 3 bombers over the target, while the 6 times more Tonies only shot down 10 bombers over the target. A gun value of 10 is enough to more or less deal with Allied fighters (except Lightnings with their high durability), the four cannon armed IJNAF land based fighters Jack and George of course work even better against fighters but against 4Es and the super heavy B-29 a gun value of 10 is just not enough (I´m thinking about escorted strikes or big strikes against small Cap, when we won´t be able to do anything). This leads to a problem, as the Frank carries the same armament like the Tony (2x12,7mm MGs + 2 20mm cannons) giving it a gun value of 10.

The Frank compared to the Tony has one hex more range, has the same armament, a slightly higher durability and is 10 mph faster and the Frank carries two 250 kg bombs which would make it a decent fighter bomber (no real need for a fighter bomber though) and a deadly kamikaze. Hopefully especially the more speed will make it an overall better aircraft (when fighting enemy fighters), the real improvement will be the next Frank version at the end of 44.

The fact that there are 130+ B-29 at Perth even more convinces me that the enemy is going to attack soon. Expected target: Northern Australia, probably Broome, followed by Derby. Wyndham or Darwin is IMO out of scope as the further the enemy heads East (when coming from Perth), the more my bases on Timor come into play.

Aircraft losses this turn. With 35 out of 131 attacking bombers lost, this would have been a disaster in real life. 26.7% loss rate. Wonder what the highest loss rate of B-29 strikes was. It´s not as severe in the game as it would have been in real life. I´m sure it won´t take long and the B-29 will kill hundreds of fighters on the ground and the fighter vs bomber loss rate will soon favour the B-29 4:1 or even higher. It all depends on how our Cap rates look like.

not much action but important info this turn. We not just spotted enemy carriers (we didn´t spot the carriers but a Glen was shot down A2A in this area), we also sent out Dinah IIIs to recon the railroad towards Derby and spotted over 20 units marching North East. As expected already, the Allied are going to attack our bases on Northern Australia. Troops are marching in, so I´m not sure what I should think about the TFs we´ve spotted North West of Perth.

In any case, it will be fun. This is the point when we´ve decided to abandon Charter Towers near Australia´s West Coast. Expected Allied target(s) are Derby (primary) and Darwin (probably with the troops stationed at Townsville at the moment). We will be well prepared to fight the enemy. He won´t get anything without comitting a hell a lot of units and this is the best that can happen for us. While it seems to be the shortest way into the SRA (don´t want to think about 1000 B-29 on Northern Australia), it is also the best place for us to fight the Allied ground units. Several factors are favouring us. We can concentrate our troops on four bases, with the enemy spearhead probably only going at one or two. Our bases can "only" be reached by B-29s (unescorted) or by carrier based ac (which can´t stay forever and we can strike back at the carriers). We will be in full supply, supply for the enemy is in question as it´s quite a long way to their next bases. And we can bring in reinforcements by sea if needed. All in all, I can´t think about a better place to fight them as we are sitting behind level 9 forts (wonder if the Allied have the same problems taking down forts as we have).

not much happening regarding combat. We are further flying recon over the railline coming from Perth, are bringing more material into the areas around Northern Australia and Perth. The enemy TFs North West of Perth are still static. No idea what bigbaba is thinking or why he keeps them there...

previous Allied evacuations and daily recon convinced me that it would be possible to do a succesful paradrop on Colombo (we already took the empty Trimcomalae earlier). Dumb as I am, thinking that at this stage of the war we could achieve something at least now and then, this paradrop lead to a disaster. Why? Because 50% of my transports were shot down immedietely by the Allied uber flak (two base forces) and the other 50% of my transports were damaged. At the end we lost three dozen Topsies. Don´t even want to talk about the fact that the defending units without any combat ability magically got their assault value multiplied by 60!

this is what is defending the base:

Image

knowing that the two base forces have 0 av, same as the aviation unit and the fragment of the HQ, it is more than amazing that they get an adjusted av of 178... [8|] another para unit is at Trimcomalae and it is ordered to MARCH to Colombo. Won´t take much time overland through a clear hex and further on two hexes on the railline. Then we will have 80 av at Colombo, wonder if it will be enough to take out an enemy with 0 base av... this paradrop was a completely BS idea in any case...

especially my carrier based ac have been in training on the Philipinese and I´ve moved all of them out, putting them on their carriers again. All our carriers are fully equipped with the creme de la creme of IJN aviation. Taking all carrier based crews together, the average exp is probably somewhere in the high 80s. [:D] The worst crew is the Jill daitai aboard CV Katsuragi which is by now the last carrier that has arrived. Next Unryu class will be available in two months, CV Shinano will be available in 6.5 months. Training of their pilots will take another two months at least though. Shinano is extremely expensive and I´m not willing to accelerate her as there is no need for it at the moment anyway. I´ve never halted the carrier so it will arrive at it´s historical date. In Nikmod this carrier is absolutely useful as it will come in with 99 aircraft, which makes her the biggest carrier in the game and it also has an armored flight deck. So far I´ve never used a carrier without it´s generic aircraft in this campaign but if needed, I will throw Shinano into the fight with land based daitais and I´ve also got Junyo´s (only carrier sunk so far) complete daitais, fully trained up that I could also use on Shinano.

Allied forces CAPTURE Charter Towers base !!!

As expected, the Allied troops moved into Charter Towers and took it today. It seems that it took bigbaba a couple of days to realize that I´ve abandoned the base as he didn´t move in immedietely. Nevertheless, the 32.000 supplies we had there, staid there of course. Very well working supply routine. My 300.000 troops left the base and left all supplies behind. What is more than disturbing to see was the fact that the enemy engineers reduced no less than 4!! fort levels in this attack, the base had level 9 forts of course. When they can also do that in Northern Australia then it will be a cakewalk for the Allied. Seems like only the Japanese can´t reduce forts at this stage of the war, even if there are 1000! combat engineers in the hex.

It was also surprising to see that the enemy has 4800 assault points in this area, I didn´t expect more than 3-3.500. Our 3.500 av are withdrawing on the railline North, the enemy is expected to follow us. Hopefully we will move at least as fast as the Allied, we´re two hexes in front of them, but I´m remembering the USMC division many months ago that move more than 60 miles a day for nearly two weeks... bug or feature I don´t know...

If the enemy is following us North, this would mean he would be driving on our positions from both West and East.

we decided months ago that it would be time to finish off the Chinese. The fact that B-29s could be based in China as soon as Chungking reaches the requested airfield size just made it more important to deal with the Chinese. Well knowing that we will take horrible losses when attacking the combined Brit/Aussie/Chinese fighters over Chungking (not to forget Chungking´s flak defense) we nevertheless decided that it is a must to finish off the enemy airforce there (something we should have done long ago when they were still flying Hurricanes). Of course, nothing went like planned. We had ordered 84 Tonies to fly a sweep from Hengchow (five hexes range) but not surprising, Hengchow was clouded in. So the combined strikes from Changsha and Kweilin arrived over the base where an undisrupted Spitfire/Warhawk Cap was already waiting for them.

Image

Well, the following aerial engagment wasn´t surprising at all, it just went like it always did. BOUNCE, BOUNCE, BOUNCE, stupid BOUNCE. I took notes and the Spitfires shot down 23 Japanese fighters for not one loss on their side. The Warhawks accounted for another 5 kills for one Chinese Warhawk destroyed. Bringing the total kill rate during the bounce to 28:1. Now if this isn´t off, I don´t know. But I´m bitching about the same thing again and again, it won´t change. The fact that the Tony/Frank sentais that were completely shot up had an average exp of 87 makes it even more ridicoulos. The Spitfire pilots surely are veteran pilots but achieving a 23:0 kill rate is just off. And it is far more off than the 6:1 kill rates of the Japanese you see at the beginning of the game. Once again, it was all about their radar. Radar is magic in WITP.

No less than 10 minutes have I watched Spitfires bouncing on my high exp escorts until it finally ended, then bringing the kill rate back to favouring us. After the bounce we were achieving something like 3:1 in total, 2:1 against the Spitfires. What is really interesting is the fact that the Spitfire has a gun value of 10 but their .33 Brownings only have a penetration value of 1, which should not deal damage to the 2 armored Tony and Frank, leaving only the 20mm Hispano, giving the Spitfire a "real" gun value of 6 vs our fighters. While our fighters carry 12.7 mm MGs and 20mm cannons, all able to penetrate an armor value of 2. In fact, it was exactly the other way around. The Spitfires achieved a kill with every second burst (more or less) while our fighters needed at least four bursts to actually take a Spitfire down instead of only damaging it. So this leads to the question if the "official info" is correct that a gun (aircraft) can´t penetrate the armor of another aircraft if the armor value is higher than the gun value. If so, then this result is completely off because the Spitfire, Warhawk, Tony and Frank all have more or less the same durability and all have an armor value of 2, but the Spitfire knocks out my fighters without any problem, even though only the two cannons should dish out damage. Tony and Frank don´t do much damage with an armament that can penetrate the Spitfire´s armor. Once again, I´m shaking my head.

As you can see in the next post´s aircraft losses, only 18 enemy fighters were destroyed on the ground, proving once again that the enemy got a Cap rate of surely 90%+, considering the fact that surely not all fighters were operational and we should have destroyed more or less all grounded fighters as the airfield is trashed. Half a dozen of my radar sets give me a Cap rate of 45%... [8|] Depressing...

Flak fire wasn´t as severe as expected, the losses within our high experienced fighter sentais are a catastrophy though. It stays the same dilemma, we´re not really in a position to fight the enemy over their terrain. Would we have killed 70 of those experienced Allied pilots it would be ok, but I don´t expect more than 20-30 being killed, in the operations report there isn´t a single pilot with kills showing up as bailing out and being killed. The airfield is knocked out for the moment and there shouldn´t be much of enemy fighter resistance left after today. We will now keep up the pressure on both Kweiyang (to prevent the enemy from building forts) and Chungking (to prevent the enemy from building up the airfield to B-29 size and to take out the enemy airforce in China once and for all) - and to destroy supplies at both places. What we don´t want to see is an enemy Cap of 100+ fighters again, as this would lead to another blood bath within our fighters, therefore the primary goal now is to keep the enemy figther force in China knocked out. Even if Chungking´s airfield would be big enough to have B-29s stationed there, he can´t defend the airfield without fighters.

The fact that Chungking obviously has more than 20.000 supplies isn´t helping us though as the enemy get´s replacements. It´s also a bad timing to fight this atrittion war in China now at the same time the Allied start their offensive on another front.

we want to keep up the pressure on the British/Australian fighter squadrons in China and ordered another strike on Chungking. I was more than surprised to see such a low number of bombers in this attack until I checked the base. Oh well, I had dozens of units marching through Changsha and by accident have also set my aviation regiment to march South too. This was already a couple of turns ago as the aviation regiment is now at Kweilin, 120 miles to the South West and my aircraft at Changsha are getting damaged now. The aviation regiment is set to march back to Changsha immedietely.

Nevertheless I was quite satisfied with the result of this strike, flak fire was surprisingly ineffective and we achieved a good hit rate, destroying lots of Spitfires on the ground. Our incoming strike was bounced of course but this time there were so few Spitfires that they got overwhelmed quite fast and and 11 were shot down A2A for the loss of 3 Tonies. Our goal has to be to kill the experienced British/Australian pilots in this area, depleting the Spitfire pool will be quite hard I guess. IIRC the Spitfire VIII replacement is 50 or 60 and there should be enough in the pool, not to think about the earlier model which isn´t that bad either. Wonder what bigbaba is doing with C-46 Commandos in China. Very valuable transports with a not so high replacement rate so I wouldn´t waste them in China. We´re building up Kweilin´s airfield too (currently level 3, max level 5) to have another airfield to fly strikes against the Chinese bases. I want to destroy the Allied will to fight back as soon as possible. Hopefully my airstrikes will at some point have destroyed enough Chinese supplies that they can´t replace their aircraft losses anymore.

Chungking has been completely abandoned this turn (airfield symbol disappeared) and the two or three Chinese Warhawk squadrons obviously were sent to Kweiyang. I´m reconning every base in China with recon aircraft and Yunan now shows 300+ aircraft. hmmm... this means he has transferred the rest of his aircraft to Yunan, a level 2 airfield that can field 110 aircraft max... I tell you he doesn´t care about stacking limits... sucker
