Summary of Operations 6/09/44

South Pacific: Ndeni captured this game turn by Allied ground forces. Plans had been underway to dispatch Allied combat LCU reinforcements to Ndeni, amphibious ship loading operations for supply and LCU’s going to Ndeni had been in progress as of this game turn (some loading ops now cancelled, other parts of this operation being continued or changed to reflect new situation at Ndeni). Current damage levels on port and airfield facilities at Ndeni have the base completely unusable. Preparation for a similar “pump and dump” process to what had been done at Noumea, Port Moresby, Luganville, etc is now being started – maximum airfield size at Ndeni is 8(5) making it valuable for air operations, with a somewhat smaller 4(1) maximum port size.

92K supply is currently stockpiled in Ndeni base, excluding supply on hand in Allied LCU. It’s likely none of the Allied supply on hand in Ndeni is captured Japanese stocks. Japanese LCU defending Ndeni were not eliminated, Allied deliberate ground attack is continuing to eliminate remnants. AAR’s follow.

Current base status of Luganville – 568K supply and 97K fuel on hand. Convoy detachment WP-197A (4 ships) arrives in Luganville from the mainland US, cargo includes 25K supply and 2K fuel.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.02 million supply and 1.45 million fuel on hand. Main body of transport convoy WP-197 (13 ships) arrives in Noumea from mainland US. Cargo aboard WP-197 includes 43K supply and 80K fuel, no air units or LCU. A second detachment of WP-197 is currently unloading cargo at Suva.

A large scale re-assignment of objectives for Allied LCU in South Pacific theatre area is now underway. Overall strategic plans are in the direction of moving due northward from Ndeni rather than an advance into the Solomons, a complete bypass of the Solomons is under consideration. The fall of Ndeni completes a breach of Pillager’s Japanese outer perimeter line from the south, access into Japanese rear areas covered by a line of Allied bases from Noumea-Luganville-Ndeni with an extensive open sea area to the east.

USAAF fighters launch daylight fighter sweeps over Lae. Allied to Japanese plane kill ratio in this action (91 to 47 planes) was less than optimal – Pillager is rarely putting Japanese planes over locations easily accessible to Allied attack in air-to-air action. My preference is not giving Pillager a “home field advantage” for Japanese air forces in air-to-air combat actions at all or as little as possible. However, air combat operations over Jap bases will likely become more necessary to inflict significant levels of attrition on Japanese air forces (particularly LBA). Numbers of USAAF pilots lost were considerably less than the numbers of destroyed US planes (above), indicating many planes reported destroyed air-to-air were instead ops losses. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 6/11/44 (continued)

Eastern US: Fast transport convoy EX-77 (10 ships) departing Eastern US for Australia via Capetown – cargo includes 56K supply and 1800 fuel, no LCU or air units.

Central Pacific: A US sub minelaying TF (10 subs) lays 200 mines in Kwajalein base hex. Remaining stock of Mk10 mines in the pool (approx 300 mines) is being used up by dumping into selected Jap bases. Mk10 is a submarine-laid mine out of production since 12/42, only ships known to carry them are US Tambor class fleet subs and those S-class subs remaining in the game (all S-class subs now operating in South/SW Pacific theatre area). 6/44 ship upgrade for US Tambor subs eliminates their minelaying capability – this upgrade delayed for some Tambor class subs long enough to load up remaining stock of Mk10 mines aboard them for minelaying missions before the subs are later upgraded on return to Pearl Harbor or other base with shipyard.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 126 aircraft (all fighters), 1 Jap TF (2 ships, both AMc), 14 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32), fires 2.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 142 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 176(125), refinery 96(5), 24 Jap LCU.

20th USAAF B-29 Superforts make their first operational action in a night airfield bombing raid on Rabaul from bases in NE Australia. These planes entered the game intended for use in strategic bombing raids from China, the fall of China in this campaign making necessary (or allowing, depending on point of view) re-use of these bombers from their original purpose. B-29 squadrons entered the game as reinforcements in Aden – transport convoy EX-70 from Eastern US routed to pick up the squadrons in Aden for transfer to Australia via Capetown and Melbourne. In any event, 20th USAAF and the bombers historically transferred from China to the Marianas, the fall of China and my action within this campaign transferring the bombers sooner rather than later.

The B-29-1 Superfort’s 28-hex normal flight range allows effective use of these planes for bombing strikes over a wide swath of Pillager’s Japanese outer perimeter from their current base in NE Australia – including all points in New Guinea from Aitape eastward, plus Rabaul and virtually all points in the Solomons. A total of 105 B-29-1 planes (15 squadrons) are now available for bombing operations, one additional B-29 squadron (7 planes) now in Capetown (transported there from Aden) for pickup by the next EX transport convoy arriving in Capetown for subsequent transfer to Australia. 20th USAAF also includes several C-46 air transport squadrons (original intent probably for transporting supply to China over the “Hump”) – these air units in various stages of transit to Australia given a considerable surplus of Allied air transport squadrons/planes already in India. Pillager is not the only beneficiary of reinforcements in the Pacific theatres from China.

Effects of the B-29’s debut bombing raid appear significant given the relatively small number of planes actually reaching target over Rabaul (15 of 35 planes dispatched). It should also be noted the composition of planes destroyed on the ground – Japanese air transport being employed for supply of Buna and/or Lae. Pillager’s safe haven at Rabaul for air or sea transport of supply to New Guinea is at an end – Allied air forces now capable of attacking Japanese air supply for New Guinea at its origin as well as destination.

Based on results of this raid, I am revising parts of my general plan for employing B-29 bombers – including use of these planes in smaller “packets”, splitting the 15 B-29 squadrons into “packets” of 3 squadrons each rather than the initial plan of three “packets” with 5 squadrons. Intent of employing B-29’s in “packets” is allowing continuous operation of these bombers (as much as possible) on some level within the constraints of pilot fatigue and the B-29’s relatively poor service rating of 5, plus spreading B-29 bombing raids across a wider area and selection of targets. The concept of bomber squadron “packets” developed and employed with B-24 Liberators and 2E level bombers in SW Pacific theatre area. My view is that the B-29 Superfort is less the arrival of a “miracle super weapon” than the entry of a tool to spread Japanese air (CAP and flak) defenses while at the same time considerably increasing the area and number of available Japanese targets for Allied level bombing raids. Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

3 x 40th BG/25th BS B-29-1 Superfort stray due to night
5 x 444th BG/676th BS B-29-1 Superfort stray due to night
3 x 444th BG/677th BS B-29-1 Superfort stray due to night

Summary of Operations 6/13/44 (continued)

South Pacific: 107K supply stockpiled in Ndeni base. Port facilities now fully repaired, port expansion from current 2(1) size being started (for the time being) using engineer elements in combat LCU now located in Ndeni. Additional construction engineer LCU’s to augment base expansion activity are being dispatched to Ndeni from Noumea. Current airfield size at Ndeni is 4(5) – airfield expansion is planned to start later once air HQ and aviation support LCU arrive in Ndeni to support Allied air operations from there.

Allied ground forces had been set for deliberate ground attack to eliminate remnants of Japanese LCU on Ndeni along with 4E bombers for ground attack on Ndeni. No aerial bombing or ground combat occurred on Ndeni this game turn indicating elimination of Jap 42nd Infantry Division LCU (at least on Ndeni) as well as complete elimination of all Japanese ground forces defending Ndeni – this the “official” end of combat operations to capture Ndeni base hex.

Current base status of Luganville – 610K supply and 101K fuel on hand. Plans now underway to transfer forward an air HQ plus some 4E bombers from Noumea to Luganville.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.05 million supply and 1.53 million fuel on hand.

Not certain whether scheduled USAAF daylight bombing strikes and Allied fighter sweeps against Buna were launched. AAR entries of daylight raids over Buna appears in one copy of the 6/15 Combat report file (not in the other file), unfavorable weather conditions at Buna and Allied air bases in NE Australia, plus current statuses of Allied air squadrons and the Japanese base in Buna (below) provide a conflicting picture. My estimate is that there’s considerable synch bug going on with this action and no raids on Buna this game turn actually took place.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – port damage 3, 1 Jap TF (1 ship), 19 Jap LCU.

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – 86 aircraft (all fighters), airfield damage 10, no Jap TF, 11 Jap LCU. Unidentified Japanese aircraft appear based at Wau in a detected status of that base, these planes likely transfers to Wau from Lae.
