That's a great viedo Fishbed Git a new rig with ample processing power and storage space, so I'm all set.
Just managed to shoot down my first Betty bomber in a Warhawk. It's dangerous, they're shooting
back!!!! Barely got enough ammo to bring a single ac down, makes the instant aces in WitP look ludicrous
Thanks boss [:)]
If you're interested, I know a nice tutorial that can be found on SimHQ about how to make videos by yourself. I did this PF one for fun, but Im really proud of my 7 minutes one about the battle of Raphia with Rome Total War, that standed for half my talk time during a history speech - it's truly a delightful hobby I can tell you, if you've got a fat computer and some free hours, give it a try [:'(]
The Betties are quite impressive in PF if you approach them from behind because of their 20mm in their big glass butt, but try rather aiming at the wings, where all the fuel is stored - most of the betties, even until the later models, have no fuel tank armor and self-sealing systems, and you'll turn them into burning things in a second with a P40. Every plane has a weak point, just be sure to know where to hit - this way I can tell you getting instant ace in a P40 against Betties in PF is not that hard [;)]

Sure, send me the link! Not going to record much until I get better..managed my first carrier
landing yesterday, that's minus a wingtip - but I got down [;)]

Some ac are much easier to fly than others: tried a Mustang and I kept stalling all the time.
The Seafire on the other hand was a delight and I brought down my first Zero!

Do you approach the Bettys from the side? If I try a dive the rear gunner always get to me:
the bomber passes so quickly through my gunsight that I can't land enough hits to bring it
down in a single pass.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/24/43

Nothing much to report - the usual air strikes but little naval activity.
Over the next 30 days another 6 Independent Brigades will arrive. Going to place them
in most of the bases in New Guinea, already got engineers building forts there. So it's
going to be a long hike for Andy [;)]

Also unloading tank and engineer regiments at Palau, Yap and Ulithi.
The hope is to wear out Andy's LCU's - this may be his only 'weak spot' in 1944!

In 4 months the defence of the Philippines should be ready: I'm always strengthening the
defensive lines that are one one or even 2 'steps' behind the front.

I'm also increasing the output of transport ac. Each time one of my main bases are bombed
I loose my reserve. I'm going to use the transports to rapidly reinforce any base that come
under attack. Strong forts are already in place but it's impossible to place a strong infantry
unit in every single base on the map.

Just go easy on the stick and you won't stall. P-51 is one of my fav. aircraft, though I prefer something with 20MM, like the FW-190A. F4U-1C is the 4 cannon Corsair. Very nice!

For Betty's head on or overhead are best. Belly is OK but you get pretty slow coming up. Sideways they absorb too much of your ammo.

I've noticed [;)]
Getting the hang of it...my biggest problem now is to actually spot and follow the enemy.
Using the external view all the time: soo difficult to follow a tiny tiny green spot around.

The Seafie with 4x0.303cal + 4x20mm is great. Will hang onto it for a while. Thinking about trying a career with
the better ac first. Don't think I'll last long in a Zero

Forgotten Battles/Pacific Fighters suffer from what we call "sniping IA gunners" syndrom that allows them to put a bullet between your two eyes 200m away at 400 km/h, so indeed we do everything we can to avoid their firing arc... several solutions are available: front attacks (something the Japanese and the Germans did use efficiently against allied 4E), chandelle or diving attacks (straightly vertical attacks from the bottom to the top or the top to the bottom, requires a good estimation of the lead as you can't correct much, and don't forget to place the arriving target in the top part of the cockpit, or you'll have no way to monitor its course) are spectacular, fast and deadly too. Try also a high-speed attack from under in his 8 or 4 o'clock if you want to attack from behind without taking all the might of his defensive fire in the process (taking this angle will make the dorsal gunner blind, the rear-gunner unable to fire because of its limited arc and will give you a larger target area for the fuel-ladden wings). Side attacks may work too, but require high marskmanship, and may prove dangerous once you have to disengage (especially if the target is flying in line with its friends, it's not funny flying over or behind 4 betties in a row without shooting). In any case, always keep high speed, this is the key for salvation [:)]
Don't forget also to set and try out the convergence distance for your guns. There is no perfect setting, it depends entirely on the way you're flying and the distance at which you use to fire. Remember that if you take the fuel tank at your right gun convergence range, there is no need for much ammo man [:D]

Here is the link to the Simhq article - and there is a pdf version too

There is a way to limit the bomber AI in the campaigns through an ini setting, otherwise yes, they are snipers.

Any cannon equipped aircraft should give you decent "stand-off" range. If you are stuck with .303 or small numbers of .50 than you have to get closer.

Thanx guys!

Just one more thing..I've updated my standalone PF with through versions 3.03, 4.01 and 4.02.
Everything is working fine but I don't have access to planes like the FW190, extra tank and missions [&:]

Suggestions?

Yep: buy Forgotten Battles [:D]

Seriousely, PF itself is not what I may call a complete satisfactory game (you can believe me when I say so, because I say it even if Ive got my face in the campaign roster and my name on half the campaign briefings text [:D]). If you want to enjoy complete air war fun, find Forgotten Battles and its Aces Expansion Pack (Ive been told it may ship in a bundle for North America, but perhaps not in Europe), you'll get rid of these annoying limitations and you'll be able to play with other pilots over Hyperlobby (the Online gaming being probably the best way to make quick progress in my opinion) [:)]

You need Forgotten Battles + Ace Expansion Pack. Also known as Forgotten Battles Gold. You can then integrate it all.

Well worth it, esp as there are some more interesting things coming like flyable Ju-88 and a Norway map...:)

Sounds like a good idea, I'll keep an eye out for it! [8D]

I'm considering which ac to keep at my forward bases! Mostly fighters in the Marianas with a light mix of Betty bombers.
All my bomber formations should be kept in reserve until needed. Their long range would enable them to be transfered rapidly
when needed together with a strong fighter reserve.

From what I can see Palau, Yap and Ulithi can all be bombed from northern New Guinea - so we should try to hang on to that
place for as long as possible. Any advance into New Guinea would have to bypass Hansa, Wewak and Hollandia as these are very
strong bases. The others hold only 1 size air fields and engineers. My transports should be able to airlift a regiment in a couple
of days if attacked.

From now on I will add reports from WWII in the Pacific - the date will be the same as in this AAR. This will enable you to
keep track of Andy's advance and compare it with the historical one.

25 October

Pacific
US Vice-Admiral Spruance issues his first plan for Operation Galvanic, the invasion of the Gilbert islands.
New Guinea
The Japanese have no more forces to throw into the attack, and begin to withdraw to their strongpoint of Sattelberg, north of Finschafen.

Spending a lot of time on each turn now: have a lot of things to organize.
I assume Andy is going to continue his advance towards Kwajalein, Emirau, the Admiralities,
New Guinea. Also holding open the possibility of a strike against Wake Island. A more audacious
approach would play into my hands but it's time to get my main defensive perimeter prepped.

Borneo and Formosa all have very strong fortifications: by the time he will be able to reach these
bases in late 44 there will be at least a brigade at each of the major bases Who Cares. There are
dozens of smaller dot islands that can be built quickly by Allied engineers. Can't protect em all
but Andy has to secure a base of operations in the vicinity to provide closer cover until he's not
vulnerable anymore. This is when we will strike!

Attacks against my positions west of the Philippines may succeed in mid 1944 but it will also be a detour. I just
want to buy time: more time means more land combat units, better ac etc. By early 45 Japan should be able to
hold out for another year on her stockpiles of oil, resources and supplies.

26 October

Another air bombardment turn!

I'm preparing a reinforcement run to New Guinea, 3 land combat units will be moved to Hollandia, Aitape and
another base to make sure that Andy doesn't try to land behind our lines.

What I need are more base forces to equipp the bases in the Philippines. Hm, thinking about scrounging 300 of the
500 aviation support points from Truk. Also got a few base force units that I wish to withdraw from Emirau and the
Admiralities.

Pacific
During the night of 27/28 October the 2nd Parachute Battalion of the US Marines lands on Choiseful and
during the next few days carries out a number of demonstrations with the idea of apprearing far more numberous
than they are. The Japanese are not deceived for more than a day or two; actually Radio Tokyo at first announces
that 20000 Americans have landed on Choiseful, but the surprise action very soon turns into a war of attrition.

Relatively quiet again as both sides are preparing for another round in the ring.
I've decided to move a reserve division from Calcutta to the Palau's to boost the defenses
there. At the same time 3 'normal' regiments are being released from the Marianas and will be
moved to New Guinea. Got so many troops in place by now that I'm pretty sure Andy will invade

Air reinforcements

As you can see there are lots of reinforcements on their way. I'm especially looking forward to get
that 48 ac Jack fighter unit. With 4x20mm cannons it can deliver a heavy punch as it was originally designed
as a bomber interceptor. Next month we start producing a new medium bomber: the Frances. In 76 days no less than 8
Daitais' with more than 200 ac arrives. This will greatly improve my offensive striking power as this type got a max range
of some 14 hexes.

I could have reinforced Truk now and invited another massive air battle but for now I'll show restraint and rebuild my
fighter force and keep my units in reserve while new ones arrive and yet more are being trained. When the Allies move closer
to our main line of resistance they will receive numerous needle pricks! Until now we've only been 'skirmishing' [;)]

I'm slowly rebuilding my stocks of Oscar IIs - producing some 250 pr month. 6 Daitai's have been sent
back to Japan with only 1-14 ac and pilots. Will re-equipp them when appropriate.

The first two Shiden-Kai (George) Daitai's have been put on 90% CAP over Ulithi. Have to protect my main
anchorage. I flew a George in Pacific Fighters today and shot down an enemy Hellcat - those 4 20mm cannons
rips right through a fighter!
