ORIGINAL: fmonster

They are so tired on Thursday Island that it looks like they are having a spit-ball fight instead of an all out fight.

I am rereading your AARs with more interest this week since I picked up WPO in the sale. I am looking forward to ramping up and playing as soon as my schedule opens up. (Darn, I hate it when life takes away from my gaming! [;)]) So, thanks for the effort of keeping this AAR going,.... it helps noobs like me! [&o]

:)

I think that Japanese are out of supply or close to that and most of my troops are just 2nd line reserves that plugged the gap. So... I just need to find some transports that aren't commited elsewhere to ship more men to the island... :)

12/23/22 - 12/25/22

Post by Rysyonok »

The usual. A couple of allied battlegroups are harassing Japanese air units (gotta check how low are Japanese plane pools - seems like bombers are starting to run low). A raider group ambushes transports at Truk (looks like IJA is evacuating some of its bases - Truk and potentially Kwajalein. Where are they going to move those forces to?).

The invasion point has been chosen. I sent some scouts to check out shore defenses, and perhaps within a couple of weeks...

IJA airforce (1/6/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

Jumping a bit ahead, let's look at Japanese airforce. It has lost some planes due to torpedoes from allied subs and flak from allied destroyers.

Image

Sadly, it's still in a good shape...

Sopwith Pup, a light fighter:
85 at the start + 31 produced = 116 planes available

Gloster Sparrowhawk, a slightly better fighter:
60 at the start + 31 produced + 13 entered as reinforcements - 23 lost = 81 planes available

Mitsubishi C1M1, recon:
30 at the start + 43 produced + 13 entered as reinforcements - 29 lost = 57 planes available

Avro 504L, float-plane:
18 at the start + 31 produced - 12 lost = 37 planes available

Avro 504K, level bomber:
18 at the start + 31 produced + 16 entered as reinforcements - 18 lost = 47 planes available

Felixstowe F.2, patrol:
18 at the start + 31 produced + 8 entered as reinforcements - 1 lost = 56 planes available

Ship-based Sopwith Pup and Sparrowhawk III are available as well, but only used on BB Yamashiro at the moment.

My 'secret' weapon - commerce raiders - finally make it to the shores of Japan, only to get kicked. Hm. Maybe I should have let them have some more experience first... Minefields popping up all over are a nice touch though - each AMC carries 50 mines, and I got dozens of them... :)

Harvesting ASW destroyers is always fun :) Especially when I'm the one doing it, not the one receiving it...

Note the ever increasing numbers of AMCs in the area. They are coming straight from West Coast, dropping their mine payload in various Japanese ports, then swinging along the coastline trying to pluck off stray Japanese shipping... :)

Japanese DDs (1/21/23)

Post by Rysyonok »

It's time to look again at IJN destroyer lineup. Here's what's left (or at least not 100% confirmed to be sunk):

Momi class:

Momi
Kaya
Kagero
Aoi

Asakaze class:

Hatsuharu
Uzuki
Isonami

Sakura class:

Tachibana

Enoki class:

Nara
Tsubaki
Maki

Amatsukaze class:

Isokaze

12 DDs - that's all that's left from once mighty armada of 93 hulls... I wonder how many 5000-ton AKs got converted to AMCs to plug this hole?

A bittersweet wrapup for January: British forces in Korea manage to avoid destruction while USN's mine fleet gets demolished. This would have placed 3,000 (three thousand) mines in Tokyo in a single raid... but not anymore.

In other news, IJN makes a vain attempt to blockade Kadina while US armed forces gain a foothold in the Marshalls.
