In the last two moves the weather has played a large part in preventing Carrier combat....and at the sametime saved my invasion fleet.....but the mines in Townsville ! Gawd ! I think that 10 ships have hit mines so far!

The weather has probably saved his invasion fleet, but it has certainly saved my CV fleet - the cavalry has arrived and I am no longer at such a huge disadvantage. However with a plethora of targets my cv commanders may not concentrate on the enemy cvs as well as I would hope.

Raver may keep his CVs (minus two CVLS and Akagi - go you wirraways!) in order to duke it out with me. Or he may send his cvs running for home.

If he has enough troops ashore and supplies to autovictory and sends his cvs running, he will have pulled off the greatest out manouvre in my pbem history - and by keeping his cvs safe he denies me a chance to hit him back for it. Depends on the supply situation, he may need the cvs to cover the transports still.

The combat report speaks for itself. I'll come back and summarize what happened this turn sometime tomorrow. I got lucky (again) and got the CV range exactly right, Raver didn't have any surface ships at Townsville bombarding or protecting his APs (so my much awaited BB cavalry had a field day), he also didn't have any minesweepers and I'd guess at about 50 of his ships have hit mines in 4 or 5 turns. If the weather had stayed bad, or any of the aforementioned had been different, this turn would have gone sour, as unbeknownst to Raver, Hornet and Lex both had 25 sys damage from a port raid on Noumea from months ago, and are quite slow targets.

Soon as I cull off the stragglers, drive out the IJN or accept Raver's sword in surrender, I'll have to try the same Scn against Raver with me as the IJN (unlike him, I've played the IJN before a couple of times).

Enjoy :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well my invasion has been smashed. It all started out wrong when the transport Tfs lost a day piss-them-selfs over the carriers in the area, and scattering every which way. Two days of bad weather that followed then helped them, but at the sametime stopped me from getting any hits in on his CV fleet, which was crawling up along the Great Barrier Reef.

Mines....gawd I hate mines! Luskan must have spent the last 3 months sowing mines in every port on the east coast! Considering that Allied mine layers carry only 40 mines, he must have been busy.

In short I now have 60,000 troops on the ground at Townsville, but no way of supporting them, I would say that they are going to get the hell bombed out of them. I would like to think that they can last till '43, but I think not....not without support, and with my CVs all damaged, I am not able to do it.

It has been an interesting PBEM....I have always toyed with going for an Auto victory, would have thought that it is easy....but the best layed plans of mice and men. ;)

Bugger mate, I was gunning for you. I was very interested to see if it could be pulled off... I'm now glad I didn't try it in my game.

The Auto victory is very tempting though!

Another big bruising

Post by Luskan »

Raver doesn't have enough troops left in the theater to hold any of his bases. He will probably get enough reinforcements to Truk before I can land a division there - but Lunga, PM, GG, Shortlands and maybe even Rabaul are wide open for my undamaged transport fleet to swoop in on.

Raver would have won if he'd used his surface fleet a lot more, especially in the early game when I had two CVs that had 0 fighters in their fighter squadrons for two months, and two CVs with damage. Two BBs, a few CAS and DDs is all you need per bombardment group - he could have shut me down - especially at Luganville, Nevea and Irau - with surface raiders that my planes couldn't catch and BBs that I couldn't match.

Hell, Even now I've only got 2 BBs - and one of them was hit by a torpedo and crippled in an encounter with one of Raver's destroyers - the other (Washington) has molested an insane number of transports in the last turn and this turn (and next turn if Raver persists in trying to offload supplies for his 60 000 troops).

Raver would have had me if he'd included a single MSW or two with his front waves (or put his TFs on do not retire). The mines at townsville were an anti sub rpecaution - I had 3 minelayers there for 3 mine laying operations, so there weren't that many mines. Pack 70 ships into the harbour and you are bound to hit them.

He also would have had much better results if he'd saved his nells and betties. With 80 nells and betties bombing cooktown or cairns every turn I could send my Irau convoys within 5 hexes of lunga basically unescorted.

Mutsu went under and my marauders put 10 500lbs bombs into the Junyo - yet I still haven't sunk one of his CVs yet.

This turns thunderstorms might help some of those damaged ladies somewhat (half his CVs will escape I fear - my CVs are out of fuel and won't be able to pursue for 2 turns).

The Auto victory is very tempting though!

G'Day Rob ! Longtime no hear........hope you missed the worse of the bushfires (and to think I was only there a few weeks ago) Four dead and 400 houses lost, to a small city of Canberra's size that is going to be a large blow.

I do not doubt that it can be done, I have tried Noumea twice against the AI and lost each time, and of course this time against Luskan ( well done................arsehole;) ). It just takes an incredible amount of finetuning and a HELLVA lot of co-ordination. One small slip-up can upset the apple cart, and in my case I had serveral. Would I try it again? Yes but only after making sure that most of the Allied surface fleet is at the bottom. Another weakness that was exposed was my poor use of PM as a bomber base. I should have built it up much sooner and based my LRB from there, but was rightly worried about Luskans LRB.

I would love to hear from other players whom have successfully invaded Australia against a PBEM player.

PM is wide open......( as is every other base) I used EVERY land unit that I had for the invasion of Townsville.....and he has clean-bowled my CV and surface fleets....what still does float is headed back to Japan for repairs....there is know way that they can be used in combat operations in their current state. I have just received a new Division at Truk, but have no way of transporting them! My LRB squadrons are intact, so maybe I can snipe at his surface fleets, but the truth be known I am now fighting for Honour and letting Luskan enjoy basking in the limelight of a victory which was well deserved.

I have little option, I can't leave 60,000 troops with no food or ammo!

Yeah I have seen this as a major mistake.....I expected 40 mines...but not 120.

He also would have had much better results if he'd saved his nells and betties. With 80 nells and betties bombing cooktown or cairns every turn I could send my Irau convoys within 5 hexes of lunga basically unescorted.

My LRB were needed to try and shutdown Cooktown, I was not really worried about Irau....after my planned victory then I would have danced across the water and dealt with Irau.

I'm out of the line of fire so to speak but it was very scary. At 3 in the afternoon it was like night with ash falling everywhere. Today was better but we won't be out of danger for a few days yet.

I have never taken Noumea from the AI but I taken most of the rest of New Caledonia.

In a PBEM I'm in now I was tempted to try for Townsville after getting PM... I'm glad I didn't! I ended up loosing half my CV's anyway though :(

MSW in the invasion would have helped ya dopey bugger!

cheers

THE REMATCH!!!!!!!

Post by Luskan »

Ladies and Gents - Raver has conceded defeat in this PBEM - so in order to see if I can do any better at the IJN, we're playing the same Scn all over again, same options, but swapping sides.

Of course, now we're both perfectly poised to exploit each other's weaknesses (if I win, I win, but if I auto-victory by taking townsville at the end of October, I ought to get a free copy of WITP when it comes out or something . . . )

Stay tuned - first few turns will probably be fairly boring.

For the glory of the Empire and the Meatball flag!!!!!!! :D

Well, congrats to both players on an exciting match. It was quite fun to read about, and I look forward to reading your account of the rematch. Beer for everyone!
