RE: Rob Vs Miller .. allied perspective NIK MOD 4.2

Post by Nikademus »

Its too bad your partner is too busy to update his AAR, might give some insight into his land strategy though i can see some benefit for it. He's apparantly trying to accelerate the breakdown of fortifications in exchange for heavily increased casualties, either that or he thinks that only shock attacks reduce fort levels. The casualty score at Battan is fairly even too which is another motivator. His casualties are mostly disabled so will recover in time wheras the unit's at Bataan will be lost. Short term gain though might be cancelled by long term recovery period needed to repair those battered LCU's.

CV's at Perth eh? Could be bad news for him. I just put a 4 CV hurt on Bombur (retaking Gili Gili in the process) Admitedly i did get lucky too and skirted any torpedo hits from G4M's and G3M's

Love the new avatar Nik ... [8D]

I agree on your assesment and he has stated many time how he is behind schedule badly .. so i would hazard a guess that the shock attacks are a time based thing.

yeah he does not have the time to do his AAR anymore .. i will see if i can prompt him into doing sporadic updates at least. i would like to read it after we are finished [:D].

It will be interesting to see how the mod copes with CV combat .. more leakers i hope due to the improved durability and armour but i am not going to be suicidal just to find out [;)]

I was thinking of using the CV's around PM-Gili area but its just too risky right now .. i dont even have F4F's yet [;)]
I am also 99% sure he does no know that my carriers are in Perth or how heavy my surface fleet is in N australia.

Both Derby and Darwin have 72 sized P39 or P40 units to cover the ports ( darwin as a sub base) and i can rush a LOT of troops into timor as i am collecting AP's in derby too. along with 40 odd dakotas. although i might send the Daks upto batavia when singapore looks weak to try and get some men out at the last minute.
I am hopeing that being agressive in the S pac ( lots of shipping ) he may assume my carriers are based round here. the CVL long island will act in a decoy role round canton/pago when she arrives here ( escorting a convoy down from SF at the moment.)

all in all i am very pleased with the situation apart from china which i dont want to lose but he must be expending a lot of effort here ( not to mention supply) .. without java and sumatra he my start feeing the pinch soon.

thanks again for the comments

Rob

Check out Speedy's 4.0 AAR for a sample what if. It's actually a 5.0 CV battle but similar enough to give you an idea of what 'might' go down. CV combat is not one sided anymore to be sure. KB is still a dangerous offensive weapon however. Ironically, the example posted occured around the PM/Gili Gili axis you mentioned as a possible flash point in your game. I did lose two CV's to the AI but crippled all four KB carriers and sank 1 by sub after the battle. Coupled with the plane losses i considered it a decent trade.

Thanks for the info nik ..

anyway i have been having some odd problems with no combatreport showing up in the save menu ??? any ideas anyone ?

oh well from memory

12th APril 1942

Singapore still holds very well .. jap deliberate assault repulsed with 1.5 losses to my 150 . also the AK is unloading just fine !

My opening up of hexes on ichang and yenen prompted large japanese assaults. both of which bounced very very badly .5k jap dead at yenen and i forget ichang losses no where near as bad though

Jap fighters and dive bombers now attacking my lose corps relieving the SW of yenen. I have sent some P39's P40's and hurricanes to ledo in advance of sending them on to china. only oscar and sonia a/c spotted recently. My I153 training got hammered by oscars too .. lost 9 for nil enemy.

Burma ! .. excellent . the carabineers are in the hex with the jap bde. awaiting another inf unit then we attack. Ledo is again under siege ! .. argh .. not looking good for the chinese defenders.

I have offered to sacrifice singapore ( its way too tough with the japanese airforce completely unable to do anything here).. but bataan went down to level 0 with deliberate attacks.. soon to fall.

The AA in the PI was hard to begin with but the supply situation nerfed the bonuses and have allowed japanese a/c free reign here ( as it should).

DEI is quiet .. dutch sub KxIII was slightly damaged patrolling balikpapan port. and SS seawolf missed an AO in the S China Sea.

The PH BB row is still knackered ! .. max speed 5 knots on the best unit .. but new arived BB and CLAA are heading to canton as heavy fleet support. ..Baker continues to build unopposed.

also got some A24 Dauntlesses to Timor and Derby in lieu of land based Naval versions. should help out some. and Beauforts now patrol the java sea in some number. while otheres are training in darwin and derby.

Noumea really need a big av support unit now .. i have 3 in canton all of which are still mauled from PH ( oddly enough only 1/2 strength) .. also not building up is a aussie bde in derby . Hq switched to SW pac to allow deploy in timor .. but at 1/3 str and not apparently re building.

anyway .. as i said just a quick update and i hope to get the combat reports back soon.

thank you for your patience.

thansk speedy .. we have set CR on from now on ..

anyway ..

bataan falls ! .. 30 K allied troops walk into captivity !

just san marc to go now .. and my offer to sacrifice singapore has been rebuffed ! .. even with 5.5 K supply singers is at level orange for the first time.

Ken did ask if i wanted to do a nik mod 5.0 starting in may 42 .. i dont really want to to be honest . so much time and long term planning expended in this game despite the oddities. he';s already taken the worst of the early AA fire .. by now ( april) the dutch and brits would be upto speed anyway so no point changing now. and china will be unchanged regardless.

also i like the POW and repulse .. they are an icon of early 42. .. also my very hefty timor defence would be pointless. as well as my potential CV raids/ambushes.

hopefully i will have come more accurate info tomorrow

Good News

The Combat reports are back and my screen capture software has a sneaky work around so i dont have to pay 25$ for the pleasure of taking them.

My mines are still causing headaches for the japanese

Both the O19 and O20 have taken damage from somewhere ?? both have lost the mine laying devices and the deck guns ?? very peculiar. anyway i spotted it before resending them out. so both are heading to sri lanka for a rest and hopefully repair the damage. As i LOVE these mine layers.

the japs have resumed air operations vs singapore .. losses are quite acceptable i think

Allied ground losses:

I have moved several fighter and FB units to sian to try and bounce them tomorrow. Bomber ops are continuing so he doesnt become too suspicious.

The RAF was rained out of most of burma today .. the mandaly air defence units did however hit the lone jap unit cut off NW of mandalay.

Day Air attack on 33rd/C Division, at 32,29

recon is showing 6k japanese here . i have moved down 4 FK 51's ( useless recon birds) to akyab to have a closer look before attacking.

The jap bombbardment of singapore is getting nasty !

Ground combat at Singapore

losses are ok .. although looking at my units here some are very badly depleted and seem not to be getting replacements ( support issue i think)

The chinese armour made a good run east of ichang and have briefly cut it off , ending in the hex with the artillery battered out before , we attack ! .. tomorrow will see the results

also the battered jap unit at lashio was evicted

Ground combat at Lashio

Allied Deliberate attack

Dakotas have now removed the 1st and 2nd burmese brigades from mandalay for R&R in india. they were about 1/2 combat ready and needed a break. coming down the rail and now 60 miles N of mandaly is an indian DIV and 60 miles behind him the 7th Armoured ( both in very good nick)..

The next day !

Night Air attack on Pagan , at 31,31

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IF x 7

Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim IF: 1 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x Blenheim IF bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 29,54

Japanese Ships

PC Ch 11
PC Ch 10
PC Ch 6

Allied Ships
SS S-38

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 48,104

Japanese Ships
SS I-158

Allied Ships
APD Stringham
DD Ellet
DD King
DD Selfridge
DD Reid
DD Dunlap
DD Benham

what do I do with that belnhiem NB unit ? its crap! .. any suggestions welcome.

ASW was poor for both sides too.

My sub was 120 miles N of Borneo

He was lurking in the reef gap E of Townsville.

So then .. the PI is practically over now, rather glad it lasted so well really. Elements of the naval asiatic HQ , the 4th marines and a PI scout unit evacuated to darwin to re-build. Rest died valiantly.

He'll have to clear out the PI next and i suspect his units are rather battered. BUT he is well behind on the DEI . personally i'd stuff the lot into singapore and flatten it mercilessly. then dash over to sumatra under cover of KB ..

Pacific is quiet as usual.

N pac is being completely ignored. mostly due to lack of transports or supply runs etc.

SW Pac .. quiet

Australia.

Good build up in N Oz. .. he'll never take this place. Eastern OZ .. ok .. plenty of AP's should i decide to reinforce PM . and a BB group in townsville and a CA group in noumea . so i;m not completely toothless round here. The BB;s ( if spotted) . may look like CV escorts .. maybe

2nd Brit CV moving to Sri Lanka ( with escort) .. maybe send down to join her sister in Derby. ?? the indian ocean is calm . no ja subs spotted so she should be stealthy ( stand down airgroups).

Java is now replete with supply at last. Just in time for the brits to upgrade in may (good-o)

the dakotas in derby will pick up gull force from dili in timor .. its a rather depleted unit that needs rest. i can always fly in a new dutch garrison next turn.

I am also considering beefing up lautern .. 3 units there right now .. lark force , BF and an AA unit. engineers would be good but i dont have any. Freed up a 2nd aussie CD unit though. ( ex-perth). may well sail it across. The swopping of inf in koepnag proceeds apace. And im 4 days from being able to change the last aussie bde to SW pac ( currently in derby at 100% str).

thats all for today .
piccie os air losses ( if its readble) .. pretty low so for

Trust me ! .. i am very very harassed in china.

Burma seems manageable .. lashio looks dodgy again mind you

The offer to sacrifice singapore is still open if you like.

KB ??? no clue where its gone.. nor baby KB for that matter.

you have been awful quiet in the pacific too. I feel something BIG coming along .. although thats probably me getting paranoid.

i would keep it on the night attack runs on airfield, if you can hit just one plane on the ground...its worth all those missions IMO. If your playing with PDU on..then in may you can just upgrade the unit to something more useful

It's amazing to see that he has not occupied Singapore!!! What is the current supply level? It seems that he will propably be unable to capture it! Level 9 forts with supplies can be devastating [:D]

It seems a lot fighting has broken out near Ichang!!! Any chance of an screenshot from China? I think this is the place where you can loose or win the war.

Any new planned offensives given thought on allied side? [:)]

Hi Aztez

no turns for almost 2 days now ! im getting the shakes [;)]

IIRC .. singapore has 13k supplies ( i have delivered over 14k in the past 2 weeks but it keeps getting used up fast).. AK 5.5K size will start loading at palembang for another run next turn. no jap subs are even trying to intercept me doing this too. if anything i'm the one massing subs in a triangle .. singers-palambang-NW borneo.

screeshot from china next turn .. its the HOT spot for now anyway and very fluid as well.

Even if i lost ichang its hardly the end of the war [;)].. might lose Communist china but thats all ( pretty bad i know but not the end of the world)..

New offensives eh ?

well i have 2 in mind right now ..

1ts in china .. atack from changsha ?? .. the 2 cities south of the river ( in the middle of china) these are well garissoned and supplied .. may attack NE as his garisson in the next city is only 4 units. I will explain this more when i get a screenie done ..

also Tarawa ..I am very very tempted to attack before it gets to size 4 .. No carrier support here though so it would be damn dangerous .. possibly 2 divs and 2 RCT can go ( currently unprepped ).

In my last turn vs surrendermonkey Force Z uttely destroyed the koepang invasion force for no loss .. i really would like to do the same to Ken if i can. Keeping Timor and Baker is. is an agressive forward defence that ties up most of my heavy fleet units. It is also a bit early to be thinking of doing major assaults in the pacific. I'd probaly get Tararwa then lose it to a KB escorted counterattack .. probably not worth it imo.

Time for a wee rest i think ..

ANyway Japan now has 14 ! units at pagan .. im assuming he'll be battering his way over the river shortly.

Opening up Ichang ( not on the road unfortunately) has allowed a trickle of supply which is causing panic in the japanese ranks ! .. he's isolated too ! .. guess he hasnt used the w key recently as it isnt very obvious from the map ..

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
112 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Deliberate attack slated for tomorrow .. hopefully .. his assauly points are very low according to the combat reports .. ( iirc its down to 14 )

Still quiet in the DEI .. I have set some soerbaja bombers to attack the airfield on the SW edge of Borneo .. only got a few buffs for escort though .. I suspect only search planes here.

British CV Formidible ( i think) .. with another BB and lots of destroyers heading from colombo to Derby .. wil take a while unfortunately. Perth gets fuelled at last as well as a LOT more supply. The AO's for replenishment use will start loading tomorrow. then the US CV's will be operational.

Baker gets 16 more dauntlesses and 24 more wildcats as it grows to a size 2 airfield.

Enjoy the picture. China is a mess but holding up rather well . much to the consternation of KEN.
