Yep those Aussie MSWs get whipped by the I-boats until their experience picks up

Hi Tallyho, welcome to my AAR. Yeah those Aussie MSW's are pretty pathetic. My "best" commander i can give them is in the 40's...blah. Worse still, Miller has been very conservative with his subs, so i don't get the target practice i normally would.

as i wait for my next turn, if been reviewing the situation at Darwin. Looks to me that Miller may not be able to take it that soon. The supply is still in the green and my fort level is about to increase to level 3. Looking at the available units (outside Darwin) i noticed that i have quite a few on the east coast that are prepped around 60 for Darwin. Based on this i've decided that its time to make a move on a major counterattack. So here's what i have plan.....

Derby - this base will act to hold the SW flank, and will put pressure on the Japanese held base of Wyndham. Here's what i will have there in a few weeks
- 4th Aus Div
- 1st Aus Cav Div
- 13th Aus Bde
- 6th Aus Cav Bde
- 3rd Aus Tank Rgt
- 8th US Army HQ
these forces will be tasked with holding the Derby line in event of attack, or in the absence of one will advance on Wyndham, then once captured will assist in the Darwin operation. Also the 5th Air Force is being moved along with an Aviation Rgt to Derby inorder to establish a huge air force to take out any Japanese resistance.

Darwin - hopefully my forces that i have there can hold out for 1 more month as reinforcements arrive. Those reinforcements are as follows...
- 2nd Aus Div
- 5th Aus Div
- 32nd US Div
- 2nd Aus Cav Div
- 1st Aus Bde
- 2nd Aus Tank Rgt
- 2nd Aus AT Rgt
- 1st Aus Army HQ
by the time they arrive ready for battle, most will be close to 100 prep points. Hopefully these are enough forces to tip the edge in Darwin, and not create a long stalemate. In case of along siege, i will release the 41st US Div from garrison duty in Brisbane.

Inorder to prevent a long stalement, i plan on cutting off any reinforcements to Darwin by sea. Therefore, i'll be commiting all the USN's CV's to the operation for such a mission. With a strong Derby airbase supporting the carriers, the risk is deemed acceptable.

The only kink in the plan is the complete lack of Artillery and Engineer Rgts in the theatre. I'm hoping these won't be needed if Darwin remains in my hands the whole time. If Darwin is captured and Miller is able to build up a few forts quickly, then i may be in trouble.

Actually I am going to sell it to Bahrain[:D] they are always looking for new areas to build resorts.

I was offered a chance to post on this thread as long as i didnt go and read everything[&:] and as Mr Donovan has done such a great job stopping me in my tracks (I am sure with more than a little help from you allied fanboys (you know who you are[;)]) I decided to at least come here and let you all know I am still trying my best. Australia seemed a good area to go after. Burma was not really an option and since we started in May 42 the production was totally hosed as Japan. I needed to revamp alot of stuff and my airforce is not going to win the airwar in Burma now. Will have to see how things go. It is a game after all.

ahhh..true. But Prime Minister Curtin has been on McArthur's back about not allowing him to release the forces neccesary to push the Japanese off australian homeland. There has been rumors of astrocities in the Japanese held territories, including a diabolical plan to make NW-Australia a Bahrainian Resort. Prime Minister Curtin isn't sure who or what a Bahrainian is, but he doesn't want to find out. After pleading his case to me, i've decided to overrule McArthur and release the necessary forces to push the Japanese back into the sea.

RE: Sept 2nd, Sept 3rd - 1942

Post by KDonovan »

back to the game after a 3 day hiatus....

Sept 2nd/3rd - night bombing attacks by Beaufighters have now switch from "hole in the ground" Mandalay, to Rangoon. No kills on the ground as of yet, but AAA is fierce as twice the usual amount of planes were damaged on their runs. Elsewhere japanese continued to pound at chinese troops outside Changsha... and my Aus Tank Rgt near Darwin, managed to hit the SNLF again, driving them back another 60 miles to Wyndham.

Plan - my operation to push the Japanese out of NW-Australia commence today with all the necessary forces now on the move. Forces should be in position to attack in 3-4 weeks. Unfortunately this may be too late as intel indicated that the 38th Jap Inf Div was planning to attack Darwin. The 38th was last seen at Soerabaja. With that extra Div, this should be enough to tip the scales (despite fort levels at darwin raising to 3). In order to add some more to the defense of Darwin, i'll be departed a transport full of supply from Derby for a high risk supply run to Darwin as the supply situation is only 6000.

Sept 4th - my bombers returned to Mandalay, because they had nothing better to do. The place is now a bigger hole in the ground [:D]. Nearby aircraft from Rangoon launched attacks on shipping near Andaman Is. 20 Helens escorted by 15 Zero's managed to score a hit on a TK, causing an explosion of the fuel she was offloading which seriously damaged the ship. Hurricanes and P40's on CAP were able to shoot down 9 Zero's and 4 Helens for the price of 5 Hurricanes.

Sept 5th - today was a bad day for the British Mechant Marine. Transports had just finished offloading their cargo at Andaman Is, and were departing the area for Madras. Fighter cover was supposed to be provided from Andaman, but a sudden rain squal had grounded the air force. At this point the entire convoy (now empty) was without fighter cover and it paid dearly. Wave after wave of bombers from Rangoon swarmed over the TF and pounded it. At the end of the day an AK and 2 PG's were sunk with 9 AK's and 1 MSW heavily damaged, and 2 AK's lightly damaged. The damaged AK's probably won't make it home.

Plan - nothing much in the works. On a hunch though i did move 5 squadrens of Beauforts to Darwin. Lets see what happens.

about the stricken merchant's...theres not much i can do as the risk is to high for me to send the the brit CV's to help.

Sept 8th/Sept 9th - well it looks like my hunch about Darwin was right as Japan landed what looks like to be the 38th Inf Div under a hail of gunfire from my CD-guns. In all 2 DD's, 4 AP's, 2 PG's were hit hard with 6in and 9.2in gunfire. Unfortunately, japan brought along some CV's for fighter cover so my newly arrived Beauforts failed to make any attacks (should've moved in some fighters).

Plan - in response to the arrival of more enemy ships off the coast of Darwin, i've moved in a few fighters and 2 squadrens of B25's. This is a little risky as the arrival of 30,000 more troops puts me at a 4-1 disadvantage in terms of numbers. I'm hoping the level 3 fort is sufficent to hold back the probable assault next turn. If not, then i'll lose 10 squadrens of planes in the retreat. I've also set my B17's from Derby on naval attack to add to my punch. Lastly 60 B25's from Derby will hit Wyndham AF.

Over in the Indian Theatre, a MSW and AK sank the result of last turns air attacks. Meanwhile a 5 BB bombardment TF will proceed from Diamond Harbor on a mission to hit Rangoon. In support of the mission will be an air raid from Wellingtons and LB-30's to soften up the resistance. No fighter escorts will be provided as Rangoon is out of range, so the bombers will be on their own.

Carful with those BB's .. are they the slow old brit ones ? they will need LR CAP.

I dont quite know what to say as miller can read this .. although i'm sure he wont 'cheat' i dont want to give anything away just in case .. and anyway , your doing fine there KD .. Lets hope Darwin holds [;)].

there will be some...but not many LRescorts. I'm mostly relying on AAA from the ships. (and yes brit BB's are slow [;)])

i believe Miller can only do "fast scrolls" so what ever you say should be secure. I think that reply to Nik was just a fluke

I wont read anything on the thread that has anything to do with the game. Its hard enough not knowing[:D] I am just not a good player (IMHO) as I seem to not plan well enough for operations. Want to see Kevin get his licks in so I am going to play this one thru. Should be ugly as I am still unsure what to do in Burma and australia.

if your confused by what this all means, wellll its been a rough 4 days for the Japanese. It seemed to shaken Miller's resolve in continuing the game, but i was able to convince him to stick with it. He sure is a honorable guy as Rob stated above.

So back to the game....

Sept 10th - day started off harmless enough as the Japanese continued to land more troops at Darwin at the cost of a Jap DD being set afire by a coast defense gun hit. But the Aussie's were hungry for more. After a japanese carrier force was spotted offshore, the Aussie's launched 30 B25's and 36 Beauforts escorted by 21 fighters. Arriving on target they encountered 37 zero's on CAP. A fierce air battle ensued resulting in the loss of 12 allied fighters and 5 zero's. But the fighter's did there job by keeping most of the Zero's off the bombers back, with only 8 bombers shot down. With the Zero threat eliminated the B25's rose to 12,000ft, while the Beuaforts hit the deck to make their torpedo run. While the maneuvering TF was too fast for the B25's to hit anything, the TF wasn't fast enough to escape the Beaufort torpedos as they managed to put 2 torps into the CV Soryu and 1 torp in the CV Junyo causing major damage to each. 7 bombers were lost to flak. Meanwhile, despite the victory at sea, the japanese launched a major assault on the city of Darwin with over 100,000 troops. The attack was repulsed by the heroic defenders with heavy loss of life.

Elsewhere, over in Burma 40 Wellingtons and 30 LB-30's pounded Rangoon AF despite a 16 Tojo CAP, destroying 2 planes on the ground, and shooting a Tojo out of the sky.

Sept 11th - well my British Bombardment TF arrived off the coast of Rangoon in the middle of the night, and completely devasted the base. In all 59 planes were destroyed on the ground. Intel would later indicated that there were some 200 planes based there. Confident that the air threat was all but eliminated the commander decided to stick around to hit the base again (i forgot to change it to "retirement allowed" again). Later in the day with the most of the japanese air force grounded, my bombers hit the base again, destroying 6 more planes on the ground. Later in the day 63 Helen bombers from Bangkok attack the Bombardment TF off the coast of Rangoon. Fortunately only 1 250kg bomb hit, which just bounced off the BB Royal Sovereign.

Over at the Darwin theatre, my aircraft attacked the burning Jap fleet again, this time putting another torp into the CV Soryu and slamming one into the BB MUtsu. In all 9 allied planes were shot down and only 1 Zero as killed. Meanwhile B25's from Derby hit Wyndham causing moderate damage to AF and shooting one Zero down while losing 1 of their own.

Sept 12th - once again my Bombardment TF pounded Rangoon, destroying another 18 aircraft on the ground. The runway should take weeks to fix. Satisfied with his accomplishment the commander decided it was time to leave. Later in the day LB30's arrived overhead to destroy another 10 planes on the ground.

Over at Darwin, more troops landed today, mostly BF's though. My lone 9.2in CD gun was however able to zero in on a small jap coastal patrol boat and hit it with 2 shells which just tore the tiny ship to shreds. Frustrated with the lack of progress on land, the japanese commander at Darwin launched a massive frontal assault which cost them dearly, and yielded them no results.

Sept 13th - more bombers returned to hit Rangoon, destroying more planes on the ground. This time 11 more planes will never see the sky. Wasn't all good news though as two allied AK's sank and a 3rd needed to be scuttled, the result of Betty strikes a few days before near Anadaman Is.

Also of note, my SS Albacore spotted a tranport TF east of Marcus heading to Wake. Me thinks i'll have to pay them a visit with a crusier first from Midway [:D]

Plan - so as you can see Miller has plenty to be frustrated with. 2 reasons specifically, that with 100,000 troops vs 30,000 he was unable to knock down my forts despite 2 assaults (one deliberate, one shock). Then there was the debacle at Rangoon where despite having search planes out in force (Which even spotted my BB's coming in), backed up by numerous betties, my BB group managed to sneak in wrecking the entire base.

I hate to put the hurt on him, but its probably gonna get worse for him as my flanking movement at the city near Nanning is complete, and i should be able to cut off his force there next turn. Then i was able to upgrade a flight of SB-2's to IL-4's which will be used to hit Taan port next turn, where shipping was spotted. Worse still, heavy reinforcements will probably arrive before Darwin can be taken, thereby making it a Japanese POW camp. So it looks like nothing is going right for him at the moment and its only Sept 42'.

Here's some nice screeniess..

Wow....what a fight! I wonder if he prepped those units for Darwin. Nice to see the changes in action though at the same time i have to wince in sympathy when someone finds out the hard way that they can't simply camp off a major land mass like in the "old days" and not expect trouble....especially when those pesky Beuforts are around. Bombur has been wrestling with a similar problem in the same scenario....as Japan, options are more limited thx to less absolute air combat and increasing Allied strength. Even having gotten my butt handed to me in the 2nd carrier battle, its been all quiet on the Oz front since then while he weighs his options.

In another, far older game, I'm having a Verdun of my own right now at Sian.....don't think i can take it even with 350,000 troops against 178,000 entrenched to level 8

dont put yourself down .. you were a real handful in our game. the most fluid ground combat player ive faced.

congratulations are the order of day for you KD ! HIP HIP HUZZAH X3[:D][:D]

Darwin looks quite solid with that div parked there too. supply was your main worry and that has been rectified. Why Miller hasnt moved the armour out to isolate you i dont know .. but its' going rather well. And the Rangoon stunt was superb ( and a lucky about the retirement orders ).. gotta love the RN BB's .

Wow....what a fight! I wonder if he prepped those units for Darwin.

not quite sure, i know he undertook this venture starting July 7th, just barely 2 months game time. So at the most, the starting forces were only 60% prepped. That starting force comprised of 2 Div and a few Eng Rgt's. Poorly understrengthed IMO. However he was able to knock my forts down pretty rapidly with a combination of infantry assaults backed up by naval bombardments. Then when victory seemed near, his bombardment TF's and CV's left the area, leading to the carnage that sank so many of his transports. With the naval bombardments ceasing, i was able to bring my forts back up thereby necesitating more japanese reinforcements (which probably weren't prepped). In the meantime i was able to move in an HQ to bolster the defenses even more. Now Miller kept pouring more and more troops into the theatre, but didn't back it up with naval bombardments, allowing my troops to maintain forts at a decent level. So now he's left with this disaster.

I think this illustrates how important it is to keep up a decent amount of naval bombardment, as this disrupts the engineers from building forts, and the engineers that aren't disrupted waste time repairing the airfield. Plus the added bonus of planes won't fly from a damage AF. So i think this was Miller's biggest mistake, while is second biggest mistake was not securing the bases of Broome, Derby, and Wnydham first. With all these base's in hand it would allow him to cut the rail line into Darwin, and deny me forward staging airfields to counterattack.
Nice to see the changes in action though at the same time i have to wince in sympathy when someone finds out the hard way that they can't simply camp off a major land mass like in the "old days" and not expect trouble....especially when those pesky Beuforts are around.

Thats true...i'll have to keep that in mind when my offensives start
Bombur has been wrestling with a similar problem in the same scenario....as Japan, options are more limited thx to less absolute air combat and increasing Allied strength. Even having gotten my butt handed to me in the 2nd carrier battle, its been all quiet on the Oz front since then while he weighs his options.

2nd carrier battle!...i haven't even had my 1st one in a PBEM yet!!. I'm still quite a newbie though, so i've been a little apphrensive in commiting my CV's into battle. But at this stage in the game i've decided that my CV's will no longer be harbored, and will respond to any threat.
In another, far older game, I'm having a Verdun of my own right now at Sian.....don't think i can take it even with 350,000 troops against 178,000 entrenched to level 8

damn thats rough. Those fort levels on the Chinese front are intimidating. Do you think they may be a tad too high, though? I think Miller has all but giving up on China from his last experience with me and Rob and those level 9 forts.
.....the most fluid ground combat player ive faced

you got that right Rob, i remeber the first time me and Miller squared off back in september on Scenario 15. It was my 1st PBEM game, and i was shocked by how much flanking he was doing in China and Burma. He was a pro in my opinion in that aspect. Thank god for those level 9 forts [;)]
Why Miller hasnt moved the armour out to isolate you i dont know

that is true, considering he did plenty of that in Burma in our last game. We don't have a house rule of landing on a non-base hex, so he could've easily cut me off from the rest of Australia with a couple tank rgt's.
And the Rangoon stunt was superb ( and a lucky about the retirement orders ).. gotta love the RN BB's.

yeah i was mighty proud of myself with that operation (even though it was 1/2 luck as you stated) In miller's eyes he didn't know about my screwed up orders and said he's never been on the receiving end of such a bombardment mission in all his playing hours.

Thanks for the comments guys, sorry for the lack of updates. There are some more turns done (including a naval engagement)..i just haven't updated the AAR yet. I was gonna update it tonite, but i think the wife is "in the mood" if you know what i mean [;)], so i can't pass up this rare opportunity.

Darwin - it sounds like he was simply worn down over time thx to your reinforcements. This wearing down effect through sustained assault was one of the unsung changes to the land combat engine from back in beta.
2nd carrier battle!...i haven't even had my 1st one in a PBEM yet!!.

lol...what can i say....hiding the carriers till 43 is boring. [:D] Won the first battle....got creamed in the 2nd. War is hell.
damn thats rough. Those fort levels on the Chinese front are intimidating. Do you think they may be a tad too high, though?

they might be. They do succeed in eliminating the instant Japanese blitzkrieg which seemed to be the chief complaint. In my game, it wasn't my setting the forts high at all as its an old 2.0 game (no china changes) My opponent simply had time to build the forts of Sian to 9. then due to bordom, i decided to start a new China offensive. (war is hell....bordom is worse [;)] ) North China is all mine save for Sian.

Waiting to see from AAR's how China plays out. I figure that there are a host of better land generals out there than me. Interesting to see who can crack the Static lines of Chinese.....if they can.

some interesting stuff this turn....

Sept 14th - slow day....2 things of note. 1) My Night-Beaufighters claimed their first kill at Rangoon, destroying a Tojo on the ground. 2) Japanese navy bombarded Darwin. Not much damage was reported as i moved out most of my beauforts days before hand in anticipation of this action.

Sept 15th - here's where things get interesting. In response to the reported sighting of japanese transports 400 miles NE of Wake Is by the SS Albacore on Sept 13th, CENPAC decided on a mission to intercept the convoy. The plan was to send 3 CA's, 3 CL's and 5 DD's from Midway on a course to intercept the enemy. It was decided to leave the 3 BB's at Midway behind, as their 20 knot speed would be a hinderance to the mission. The TF left Midway harbor on Sept 14th under the cover of darkness. Weather reports indicated stromy weather en route to the target, thereby providing cover to the prying eye's of japanese search planes. On Sept 14th, the TF arrived on station (undected) in the darkness of night, 30 miles NE of Wake Is. Soon after the lead DD Monssen's radar picked up a blip in the darkness to the SW. The TF swung to port inorder to investigate. As they got closer 2 enemy TF's comprising of lumbering transports with small escorts were spotted at 8,000 and 12,000 yards respectively. The allied force attacked the closet TF first, with the CL Richmond opening fire on the AK London Maru, scoring multiple hits. The bigger CA's then joined in and pummeled the helpless AK, sinking it in 20 minutes. The allied TF then bored in on the remaining transports, but the lucky Jap convoy was able to disappear in a fog bank. The allies then turned their attention to the other Jap convoy, which was mainly comprised of tanker's. The CA Minneaplosis fired first scoring three 8 in gun hits on PC Ch 11, which completely destroyed the small boat, sinking it with all hands. The 8in guns of the CA then turned on the TK Junei and hit it adminships, exploding the fuel it was carrying. Then lead DD Monssen then put a torpedo into the striken ship, breaking it's bank and sinking it. The remaing allied ships then started to join in on the action sinking 2 more PC's and heavily damaging 3 more TK's. At this point, fearing the burning wrecks may signal a jap counterattack by night torpedo bombers, the commander fled the scene. However, the allied TF wasn't done yet, because as the TF near Wake Is it pummeled the base with 8in, 6in, 5in gunfire, wrecking the port facilities there. Now it was time for them to leave, the path of destruction behind and head for Midway.

May 16th - today a massive 130 bomber raid on Wyndham was launched (from Derby) which completely wrecked the base, destroying 3 Zero's on the ground. (they will be back tommorrow). Meanwhile the japanese thought it was time to try another assault on Darwin, which failed (forts now at level 4). Only 2/3rds of the total jap force attacked, so i wonder if Miller is trying a different strategy of resting some of his force, so that he can keep up deliberate attacks more often.

May 17th - bombers from Derby returned and completely annilahated the Wyndham airfield.

Plan - wow was Miller annoyed with that surface battle near Wake Is, and rightly so i might add. Apparently he actually set a trap for me (which i fell for). He stationed 6 CV's 240 miles NE of Wake, waiting to pounce on any allied ships that might attack his transports. As you can see nothing happened, and i was able to escape the trap. Miller was annoyed that his ships didn't react to mine, despite the obvious distress calls his captians would've reported when i start sinking his ships. Instead they just stayed in that same spot, and by the time daylight came my surface force was now 240 miles E of wake (480 miles away from his CV's), way to far for him to launch any strikes. Had this game been more realistic, his CV force would reacted southward the instant my ships were reported, to cut off my retreat. Instead they just sat there. Now since i'm not privy to all the information (maybe they had no op points) its hard to say how unrealistic this is. But IMO it look like the game engine really affected game play on this particular turn. Comments are appreciated to shed light on this subject

Anyways back to the game. Not much planned for next turn other than a B-24 bombing run on Wake (from Midway).

RE: Sept 18th, Sept 19th - 1942

Sept 18th/19th - Il-4's from Chungking hit Taan harbor putting a bomb into a gunboat and transport each. 2 planes were shot down by flak though. Elsewhere the japanese launched another assault on Darwin, and failed to get any results. Meanwhile over at Burma my Carbineers Rgt took Akyab today. Unfortunatly the runway there is full of holes (thanks to my bombing months ago), so engineers will have to be shipped in by sea, before i can start airlifting major units in. Lastly my B24's from Midway hit Wake, destroying a Mavis in the harbor.

Plan - not much other than rearranging of forces in India, as i start to make distant plans for the invasion of Victoria Point and Saband (sp?).
