-Yes[:(], Yamamoto started an investigation to discover why the 90 Betties/Nells and 54 Zeroes in Rabaul failed to attack the convoy despite being ordered to do so. The Zuikaku boys sweep had the objective of soften enemy air defenses (which they achieved with success). I think a few commanders will have to commit suicide.....
Strategic defeat
-The enemy convoy was able to return with no losses, a sad day for JNAF. Lae was attacked by B-17´s for two consecutive days. Zuikaku boys claimed four of these monters, against the loss of one Zero. Intel estimates are 2 B-17 shot down. Another abandoned base captured by the allies. Oscars again won a small victory over green P-40´s. Overall air losses are close to 1100 for allies and 600 to Japan.

RE: Strategic defeat
USAAF admitted to the loss of 2 B-17's which crash landed on return from their mission to Lae. They were subsequently written off. However in return they plastered the enemy base and shot down 8 enemy fighters. These claims were later confirmed.
Commonwealth forces have successfully penetrated into Northern Burma and established a new base for the future liberation of the Crown colony.
Commonwealth forces have successfully penetrated into Northern Burma and established a new base for the future liberation of the Crown colony.
Zuikaku boys again....
....shot down 12 more planes, for a grand total of 67. Zuikaku air group now has a exp level of 77 and no less than 3 aces, the sad note is the loss of four pilots, three in air combat (all to enemy P-39´s) and another one destroyed by an enemy bomb while preparing to take off. Overall losses for enemy forces in the raids against Lae were 15 planes (8 P-39, 4 P-40, 2 A-20 and 1 Beaufort). The enemy bombers caused light damage to Lae instalations and no sake was lost.

Another bloody day
...lots of losses for both sides (29 for Japan and 38 for the allies). The allied lost more 14 planes (6 P-39, 4 P-40, 2 B-25, 1 B-17 and 1 Beaufort) in exchange for 4 Zeroes (two destroyed in the ground) and 8 C5M (all destroyed in the ground). The Zuikaku boys had no pilot losses and already achieved 76 victories. Over Mandalay, a new bomber appeared, intel identified them as being the Wellington. The plane seems to be pretty hard to be shot down, but the Hurricane escorts weren´t so impressive, in two days, 19 Hurricanes and 10 Oscars were lost over Mandalay.
-Some curious news: Japanese intel detected that some P-39´s units in New Guinea are being shifted to the P-38. Intel believes it is a two engined fighter developed by Lockheed. How does these guys believe that a two engine fighter can face the A6M2?????[:D]

RE: Another bloody day
Concerned over the poor preformance of the Hurricane in Burma, Fighter Command sent recently promoted Wing Commander Paul Richey (DFC & Bar) to the theater to gather information and report on the circumstances behind the recent difficulties.
Richey, author of the book "Fighter Pilot" served two tours of operations in Europe, claiming 11 victories and having been shot down three times. After touring the airfields and reviewing RAF tactics and strategies used, he submitted the following report to RAF 224 group. The highlights appear below:
3. It is considered , however , that the Air Staff has played ostrich for long enough in this matter of the respective points of the Hurricane and the 01. [the Ki-43] If everyone, from the pilots to the AOC in C is agreed that Japanese fighters have our fighters at a disadvantage in certain circumstances let it be admitted and let steps be taken to avoid those circumstances. No useful purpose can be served by telling the pilots they have the best aircraft in the world, because they know they have not and will meerly regard the Air Staff as a bunch of nit-wits.
4. Rather let this be our line:- The Japanese fighters have good and bad points. Our own fighters have good and bad points. A comparison of the Japanese Army Type 01 and the British Hurricane makes it obvious from the start that in a certain type of fighting the Japs should come off best. This is borne out by experience: the Japs can dog-fight better than we can; however, they are lightly armed and need to get in good long bursts against our heavily armored aircraft before they can shoot them down. Their manoeuvrability enables them to do this if we try and dog-fight them. On the other hand, one short accurate burst from a Hurricane usually causes enough disintigration of an 01 - and the Hurricane is faster. All this being so, the obvious thing to do is to work out tactics to give ourselves the maximum advantage. We won't dogfight. We will only attack from above, diving and firing a short burst before climbing again. If we are caught out and are below the Japs or at their level we will immediately take steps to reverse the situation by diving away and climbing up again before attacking. We will defeat the Japs by cleverness.
5. It is suggested that talk along these lines would encourage our pilots as well as help them, for they will see that their problems are understood by the Air Staff and not, as they appear to think at the moment, merely ignored.
Regrettably, Cmdr Richey's comments have generated not a small amount of hostility among the staff at 224 Group. Air Commander A.L. Grey whose command was the subject of Cmdr Richey's comments, suggested recently that Richey should borrow a Hurricane and "show them all how to fight the Japs."
Investigation by Fighter Command continues, including the proposal to send Spitfires to the Theater.

No rest
-Air losses are mounting for both sides, as enemy air activity increases over Burma and New Guinea. Oscars from Mandalay decimated another enemy FG. This time the P-40´s were beaten at a 9:1 ratio. On the other hand the enemy has changed tatics in New Guinea. Instead of the heavily escorted high altitude raids, they shifted to low altitude unescorted raids. While their level bombers took relatively heavy losses (4 A-20´s, 1 Beaufort, 1 B-25 and 1 B-17), the low altitude attack destroyed 9 Zeroes and 3 C5M in the ground. Fortunately, only one pilot was lost and the Zuikaku air group added more 5 victories to their records. There is, however, growing concerns over the ability to keep Lae working as an effective airbase. The only bright spot being a clear decrease in the number of enemy aircraft taking part in these raids.

RE: No rest
A bad day, the situation in Lae is worsening, Yamamoto is considering to retreat the Zuikaku fighter group. Althought crew losses are small, 3-4 Zeroes are being destroyed in the ground each day. To make things worse, unescorted Sallies were caught by P-40´s over China. Four bombers lost in two days.

RE: No rest
AVG reports a major victory over Japanese forces raiding Changsha....4 enemy bombers being felled confirmed with another 5 reported as probable. In the skies over Lae, Allied bomber forces continue to reduce the airfield there, 7 more enemy planes reported destroyed on the ground.
Lae evacuated
-Tokyo has strongly denied rumors that the Zuikaku airgroup evacuated Lae, however, only one A6M2 was able to defend that base (shooting down a Kitty hawk, btw[:D]). Another four A6M2 were destroyed in the ground.

RE: Lae evacuated
Allied air dominance over NG appears complete. MacArthur announced grandiose plans for the future invasion of Rabaul today. Australian units will comprise the intial assault eventually to be replaced by American troops which will have extra clean uniforms shipped with them for the victory parade.
If we are winning the war....
...why are we retreating in almost every front, asked Tojo to Yamamoto yesterday....[:D]

RE: If we are winning the war....
ORIGINAL: Bombur
...why are we retreating in almost every front, asked Tojo to Yamamoto yesterday....[:D]
Yezzz.....Allied codebreakers are asking the same question. Is it a trick? hmmmmm.
Japanese LBA is hardly broken even if their CV's are a bit battered. The Japanese Army has not yet tasted defeat.
RE: If we are winning the war....
Yezzz.....Allied codebreakers are asking the same question. Is it a trick? hmmmmm.
Japanese LBA is hardly broken even if their CV's are a bit battered. The Japanese Army has not yet tasted defeat.
-Well, sheer stupidity from the Japanese leadership is a concrete possibility, it´s possible that Bombur is hesitating due to the logistic constraints to an all out offensive....maybe[:D]
-A third possibility is that Bombur is a coward who mourns each plane and ship lost, and, having lost his favorite ship, is simply too scared to send his fleet to battle again
-Fourth: We are preparing another Midway
-Fifth: We are waiting for the Ki-67, B7N, Ki-84 and A7M2, so we will have a competitive air force
-The games goes on

Air offensive in Burma
A small IJN surface force was able to reach PM undetected, bombardment resulted in minimal damage but two enemy PT´s were sunk. On the other hand, the enemy started a big air offensive against Mandalay. The Oscars, as always, did a great job, shooting down 14 fighters against 12 lost, however, the horde of B-25´s used by Nik destroyed more 12 Oscars in the ground. The introduction of the new Ki-44 in frontline units in Burma could help the Japanese bases to resist better those attacks, but some IJAAF leaders still believe the Oscar is a better plane. The leader of 11th Sentai from Burma area (a crack squadron with 56 air victories and three aces), however, said that there is no sense in keeping the Oscar as the only fighter to defend frontline bases, as the weaponry of that plane is hardly able to scratch the enemy bombers, he argues that Ki-43´s should take on the fighters while Ki-44´s should play the role of bomber busters. The JAAF HQ is studying the necessity to increase Ki-44 production and use mixed forces in Burma. The Navy, on the other hand, is hesitant in sending her A6M´s to Burma, as the heavy losses in the recent Lae campaign resulted in a serious depletion of skilled crews.

RE: Air offensive in Burma
well crap. We appear to have experienced our first out of sync. My replay showed the PT's fighting back and torpedoing one DD which was then finished off by my LBA the next air phase. rats. [:(]
Counterattack?
-The second wave of B-25 hordes failed to materialize in the last two days. Smaller attacks on Mandalay resulted in a few planes lost for both sides. A big raid against Akyab was made by IJAAF bombers with poor results. The fighter escort managed to shot down 2 P-40´s while a P-40 and a B-25 were destroyed in the ground. Unfortunately, bomber losses were higher for the Japanese. As IJAAF bombers were also involved in other fronts, no less than 10 of them were lost to AA fire (none in A2A combat). Rabaul was visited by B-17´s for two days with almost no damage. Two B-17´s were lost. The pilots of the Zuikaky Daitai, with a large experience in fighting this plane, noticed that these big bombers are hard to shot down, but their crews usually panic when they are damage and frequently drop their bombs before reaching target in order to flee. Rabaul, however, is said to be safe, as the yankees will prbably need two engine fighters to escort their bombers to the base and the less maneuverable planes will be easy preys for our A6M´s
