I didn't think he would try this...I had been debating sending a Marine tank unit here, they are cooling their heals in NZ.

I have asked this before and I'm not sure if I missed the answer but why on Earth is your opponent ALWAYS shock attacking? Do you have some kind of odd house rule about this? We can't complain about the AI doing crazy things when we have experienced PBEM players doing even crazier things.

I have yet to see a deliberate attack by the Japanese in this game and if he would stop the senseless shock attacks everywhere he might have some troops left to fight in mid 42 and not have wrecked every available unit on the map. [&:]

Well, this was a paratroop attack which isn't obvious from my post. Japan has toned down their use of shock attacks a bit, as witnessed by this attack at Ceylon (wouldn't surprise me if he shock attacks today though[;)]):

Ground combat at Trincomalee (31,47)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 11879 troops, 99 guns, 35 vehicles, Assault Value = 347

Defending force 8447 troops, 70 guns, 45 vehicles, Assault Value = 92

Japanese adjusted assault: 92

Allied adjusted defense: 205

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 1)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker: leaders(-), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
182 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 20 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
348 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 20 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 14 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 7 (1 destroyed, 6 disabled)

Assaulting units:
38th Division

Defending units:
99th Indian Brigade
Trincomalee Fortress

Should be some fireworks this turn:

1. Sending in two destroyer squadrons to Koggala at Ceylon hoping to catch IJN troop/supply ships
2. Sending in two destroyers in the Luzon Island to contest an anticipated landing
3. A large destroyer squadron is operating around Noumea

March 20, 1942

We whiff with all our destroyer raids...KB is at Singapore bombing the port, while a few smaller carriers are off Ceylon.

7 Allied Destroyers across two task forces are at Koggala...which is empty now that the lone regiment moved one hex away. I have flown some worthless troops to Colombo and am sending the brigade there to Tri...to prevent the IJA Division (the 38th I think) from taking that base.

Tying up his forces during the bonus period is great. Keep it up. [&o]

11 more Matildas in the pools to get to the units in Toowoomba and then our first major offensive of the war will start!

Wirraway and Hudsons providing good intel...the 2/11th AC regiment will move south while our forces move north from Toowoomba.

Good move. Colombo is clear terrain and Trincomalee is IIRC, wooded rough or jungle rough.

Congratulations on all of the degrees! That's a proud dad.

Were you doing a non-specific ground attack mission when you found that unit in the middle of the desert? I imagine either that or you were quite lucky with the recon hex.

Of course, some attacks are better than others...repeated attacks eventually can raise some dl to score hits, without recon. A valid tactic when there is no effective AA present.

Singers flak is a potent weapon, not sure why Japan is wasting their experienced pilots doing this other than they are scared that Repulse might have been getting fixed.

Bombing for intel...this off road push by Japan could have as much as 6 Divisions in it.

Trincomalee is secured for now! For a little bit, anyhow. That Japanese Division is down to 253 AV after combat![:)]

PS: There are 36 disbanded ships in Koggala, I had hoped to damage some of them this turn...[:(]

Butchers bill for the day...

I feel fairly confident that the Teisin Maru burned up with all the invasion supplies on her.
