Of course they didn't have a guide, they got stuck! A Scout is trained to read maps and a Scout Sergeant is also trained to develop a route plan of march for various units so they can move from one place to another without having obstacles that would stock their movements. For tanks, that might mean that the bridges can't hold their weight. For trucks and especially heavily loaded trucks, the hills can't be too steep. The Scout would also know important things like where the bakeries, the submarine sandwich shops, the lunch meat and cheese shops are, the bratwurst stands (with bier) plus where the little stores (lebensmittle*) are to buy sodas, chips, and other snacks.

Lake Itasca has a nice webcam, but it looks rather chilly there this time of year. That water probably can't wait to get out of Minnesota and down to the Gulf of Mexico.

My point is that it is a tanker driving. Or I assume it is a tanker. A guide telling, or instructing, the tank driver to go on the right side of the ravine, and to stay out of water, is one thing. The tankers following those instructions are not the same thing. Heck, I can even imagine a tanker driving through a more watery part of a ravine than he has to because he think it is fun.

Ranger Joe. What rank has an officer that has this on his uniform?

If that is an American rank, that is either a Lieutenant General or a Vice Admiral. Since the background is green, that probably is not a US Navy admiral.

Note that the easiest way to get lost is to give the butterbar (2nd Lieutenant or Ensign) the map!

Actually, that is a rather warm day there for this time of year. Actually a lot of the water does wait. Some lakes get up to 5 feet of ice which would almost be 1.6 meters of ice. Sometimes even Lake Superior completely freezes over.
