On the 29th the IJN again moves in close to Shikuka. This time there are two CA TFs, three big BB TFs and lots of Es and SCs and MTBs to hit the PT boats and hopefully the other stuff that rollovers have been showing; xAK, LST, YMS, DM, DMS, SC and a few more types.

The first contact? A lone xAK sitting 1-2 hexes out from Shikuka. [:D]

A few APD are sunk by fast E and DD, then the first more equal battle as these DMS tangle with some slow Es. Fun to see some of these little types duke it out. This one was inconclusive, with damage to both sides.

Some MTBs did their job well, saving a few 20cm shells from the cruisers for later by taking out these LSTs, again sitting without escort one hex from Shikuka.

Hiei used 3 main gun shells on this lone xAK. This is what I'd hoped to avoid. This is two hexes out of Shikuka.

As day broke strikes went for the BBs near Shikuka, and luckily the KB CAP reacted, downing about 80 Allied fighters and bombers for only a few losses.

That was it for the naval battles of the day, just feelers, trying to get some paths cleared and test the Allied reaction. The next few days will be interesting!

The Allies shock another division over the river. This time the Indian 319th is reduced to 0 combat strength during the battle.

Are you tempted to counterattack them out of the hex? With a river retreat path, the losses would be staggering. [8D]

Those units moving in near Prome are worrying. I just don't know when they'll arrive, and I do know it's at least a divisions worth of troops. So I'll try a DA but not shock. Hopefully the disruption is very high for the Allies here.

After only a few "battles" with the single ship xAK breakwaters 80 miles off of Shikuka, two of my BBs are at less than 75% ammo. A few of the cruisers too. I'm going to keep it all going, but from what I can see, there are a lot of these ships out here. There were 750+ ships at some points in Shikuka. There are now only 523 on the rollover.

I'll send in the cruisers first and let the BBs wait, so possibly if they sink lot of the fluff he'll at least have to put more out, and the VPs do add up in the end.

I guess I should have brought 100 Japanese xAKs to lead the charge! [:D]

I ended up restricting everything to one hex out, and found mostly PT boats and a few stray xAK and LST. The PBs did a good job against PTs, but of course the VP exchange isn't positive there for the Ansyus, worth 10 points each. If it saves other ships though, it's worth it. Tomorrow I think I'll find some more serious resistance.

The DA in Burma didn't get a positive, and the brigade in hex was wrecked, from 260AV to 67AV. I'll be moving that back now.

He's started using some of the remaining B-29s against Paramushiro. That is good! Soon I'll jump in there.

Just broke my habit of silent reading and logged in because this story really catches my attention; not only because of the well deserved strategic victories, but also by the AAR itself - could not help myself but really get infected with battle fever when your 'heavy brigade' charged last month... bloodlust? Me?
Not so often these days.
But to be honest I started to feel pity for his little pixel troopers, Schweinfurts everyday and everywhere.

Yes, the deep, Custer-like penetration by the Allies looked simply wrong at first sight and I didn't get dissapointed.

Exchanging all these fuel sucking small soon-to-die-anyway 'canoes' with Victory points is quite entertaining to watch.
Must think of Quincy's story in Jaws...

Sry for the broken language, but typing on a crappy phone in the middle of the night between frogs and owls during a night fishing trip didnot help *gg*

Thanks for breaking your silenence! Always good to have a new contributor chip in to the AAR.

I think the deep penetration isn't wrong, it's just an opportunity for Japan to give the Allies some fight. I think Dan had just played a very aggressive opponent in John III and I am more measured in my responses. I don't alway jump in, but I will make aggressive moves. I hope to keep him guessing.

I just hope I won't be the one left guessing soon! We'll see! [;)]
