RE: Wild Sheep Chase

Post by obvert »

Right now I'm aching to to get the game date, a few days on from here, as I've just watched a fantastic replay. It's so amazing to 'see' history this way, watching the Allied fleet circle and pound and then invade Saipan! The CD guns there are something to reckon with and did a bit of damage of their own, but nothing to stop the landing of an incredible number of Allied troops.

Ok. An update on the next few days and then on to the replay and screenshots. [:)]

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

CENTRAL PACFIC: All of the big stuff is here. The BBs and the CVs and the APAs. It's been fun to watch the MTBs mix it up with 30-40 ship TFs. One even caught the CVs but got scared and ran away. Saipan is obviously the target, and he's likely to move in at any moment. He dropped supply and most likely more support troops at Tinian, plus the 120 P-47s that came up and ate my sweeps on the 2nd. We did okay actually, getting about 1:2 here, but he will now own the air over these bases. The CV planes also swept Saipan, doing VERY well. Saipan's groups moved to Pagan after these battles.

All I can do is watch and hope the defenses wear some of the power down so it takes as long as possible here. The next generation B-29 should be arriving and he will want these bases to use it from. That will suck, but it's all part of playing Japan. Here we go! [;)]

SUBS: My subs have congregated near the Marianas and about half of the 25 there have made contact with the Allied fleets. The others were waiting back to see the movement of the CVs. I've had some success already in hitting several of the invasion and transport fleets, one tanker and losing two subs outright with a few more damaged enough to be sent back. It's fun and there is little he can do other than trust the Allied ASW which is very good and has protected the fleets well, but a few always slip through. [:)]

Against the Allied subs my highly trained ASW air seem to be getting a lot of hit messages near Lomblen, most likely because the subs have been highlighted for days and don't move out of the search zone at all. I also have hit two now that were in the shallow base hexes and this last turn hit two with one TF of two Super-Super Es, the class with a 9 DC rating. It's a vicious circle. My air get gets better with experience, sees more, then the ships move in to hit them and gain experience. Some of the later war E are nearing 60/60 exp, which seems good since they start around 45 for both night and day.

DEI: Manado went to level 8 fields. Yuck. Jolo is slowly being whittled away by daily 4E runs and bombardments, but there hasn't been a DA in weeks.

S/SW PAC: Since Jocke is occupied up in the Marianas I thought there might be an opening in the South Pacific. I also noticed that there was a TF listing CVE floating around Kiriwina Island on the 3rd. I sent in 3 Grace groups, set two to DB and one to TT and let them loose to 11 hexes. That brought them into range of Finschafen's CAP and lost some planes late in the day, but they also scored over Milne Bay liley sinking 8-10 AK carrying some kind of base force or engineers units. Around 5k troops were lost and there was no CAP. I love the Grace. The 2 x 250kg is perfect for unarmored ships and the TT then finish some of them off.

S DEI: The Allied subs continue to menace but there is still no forward movement down here.

BURMA: He's still bombing around the edges. Earlier, when I needed all kinds of extra airbases, this would have been really effective. Now it's seeming a bit of a waste of 300-400 bombers. The troops are still recovering squads and are right at 6k AV now. They'll reach nearly 7k AV in the next weeks.

Here is a sample of my transports for the day. [:)]

The Tabbys are gold. Much more resilient than the Emilys, and just can move mountains. plus they're half the cost. I can't get enough of them. For my IJAAF transport I'm transitioning back to building Thailias due partly to their range and primarily to the engine they use as I've built out the majority of the Ha-34 that powers the Helen and the Tojo. They're more brittle though too, with no armor. The Helen transports have also been a steady plane for me.

NEAR MISSES
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So here is a question.

When a DC attack is shown in the replay the near miss message includes one or several star symbols each time, as shown below in two examples. Does the number of ** have any relation to damage to the sub from the near misses? Do they take damage from near misses if not specifically listed? Is it to show the growing or lessening proximity of the spread?

Of course it's always better to just let the 36cm gun crews have at it. [:)]

SAIPAN IS INVADED!!!

CENTRAL PACFIC: This comes as no surprise after the last few turns, but of course it's hugely important. Jocke's main invasion forces shake off attempts by my MTBs, subs and midget subs to get to them, and manage to start unloading during the night phase. A BB bombardment precedes the landings, with Idaho taking 12 hits from the shore guns and being left on fire. This caused almost no damage to the troops or the base.

Then the heavily protected landings arrived and the BBs did well to shepherd the charges, but took a pounding too. Arizona took 21 hits alone, then later taking 9 more and showing and 'on fire' message. Most bounced but some destroyed guns and stuff up top. CL Leander took 8 hits and those were more meaningful, as were the 10 on the Hobart in the other invasion TF. The Maryland is the winner though with 42 hits taken and an 'on fire' message. Then the LCI (G) ships moved in and suppressed our troops' fire, getting the men to the beach relatively safely.

I hope the fires do something to the BBs and their system damage and destroyed devices rockets up. We'll see.

In the day phase multiple sweeps go over and the Helldivers are still set to dive, which perhaps was not so prudent. He didn't get hurt too badly there, mostly due to the fact that my AA is larger guns and the base forces haven't yet gotten their 20mm and 25 mm upgrades. To bad. Anyway, he did lose some 12-15 more Navy strike planes in a completely ineffective bombing run. This is good, as neither the shore bombardment or aerial bombardment does much to our troops. It could take a bit longer here if this trend continues.

On the day he landed about 1900 AV including four full divisions and several tank battalions. I sure do wish we'd adopted stacking limits in this game! All in al though this was an amazing replay to watch, and the power of the Allied machine is impressive. The Japanese defenses were equally tough and really dished it out as well. My other bases don't' have quite the CD power as Saipan, but they have some still and potentially damaging two BBs now is good news for the rest of the islands here, but we'll worry about this one first. Flying anything in here is likely impossible, but we'll see once the Allied fleet decides it's had enough sub dodging for one week. [:)]

SUBS: The Chiburi, Kusagaki and Etorofu force another sub, the Dorado, to surface where it is finished off by the Chiburi.

In the Marianas I lose I-41 to a DE TF, also forcing the sub to the surface. The I-9 takes heavy damage but should make it back to the repair yard. The I-45 slips into one of the CV TFs but is sighted before getting a shot off. Damn! All other subs are circling in and should be involved next turn if his fleets are still hanging out.

North of Luzon the Guardfish hits AV CAnberra Maru with one TT, but she has only 43 flood damage and should be able to steam back to the HI barring other sub encounters.

One of my midget subs, the Ha-59, hits xAP Kota Inten with one TT at Tinian!! Nice shootin! I guess against 40 ship TFs it's easier to sneak around unnoticed. [:)]

At Lomblen at least three Allied subs skirted both their own and our mines to attack our SAGs, hitting nothing. Our lone ASW DD hit and forced another surfacing, gunning the Muskalunge under. Then the Escolar was given 15 hits including two direct.

S/SW PAC: no more glory down here, but no reprisals either at Rabaul. I noticed a beefed up Milne Bay CAP was added. [:)]

NORTH PACIFIC: Cold Bay wil be nearly vacant in a few days, and then I'll start working my way back through to Adak, clearing out all troops and sending them back to the Kuriles, leaving just a token force on each base so that if he lands he still might get the winter disruption.

S DEI: So this was interesting. Exactly 100 B-29s dropped aerial mines at Lomblen where my three SAGs are patrolling. This could be difficult. How many mines is that exactly? Seems like it could be a LOT! [X(]

None of my ships hit any mines today, and I'll not touch their patrol settings until the two AMs from Soerabaja make it here. I have an AMc at Koepang but just realized it's out of fuel. [8|] Bad timing. I'll try to send it here anyway, but not sure that'll work so well. This will be nerve-wracking for a few days. To top it off subs came into the hex (!!!) braving both our and Allied mines to attack our light cruisers to no effect other getting one of the prowlers sunk one and heavily crippling another.

BURMA: The troops recovered to over 6k AV, and more supply is flowing in. [8D]

Well, with SL the allies would never be able to land all those men at Saipan...but, at the same time, Japan could never have all those men there. It's a trade off. With SL you have to Always consider the A/T value and the forepower of the troops you base.
Saipan is a 35,000 men SL Island...which means 2 full allied divisions, an HQ, a couple of artillery units and some tanks BNs...quite a lot of firepower! For Japan it's different bacause a lot of space must be occupied by Air HQs, base forces and naval HQs...so the space for the combat units in those important bases is very limited...
Which means 1 full divisions, some artillery units, maybe some tanks (if you have them) and that's all... not more than 500/550 AVs...

Add to that terrain bonus x2(or x3?) and forts lvl6+ and Japan can have ~2000AV when on defense.
Big problem even for two Marine divisions

Interesting. With SL if it's 35k on Saipan I don't think he would be able to take it at all. I have only 38k men here now (numbers, not stacking) with extra refugees here from Truk and other bases that were caught on their way through to elsewhere. My core group of stuff is about 42k stacking value, and the total here now is around 48k stacking, so I'd have to leave off a big base force and use a smaller one instead, take off a few AA units and make a few more tweaks. I could still get to the same AV I think, with the anti-tank guns and the Army HQ.

He certainly wouldn't get half of what he is using here. Oh, well.

PS - I just noticed this and i have an Allied related question.

isn't the amphib HQ supposed to stay on the ships? Here he's got the V US Amphib Corps on Saipan.

The DA got a 1:2 but was a close enough call to be worried, and the forts were lowered to 5 which is not great. Still, the Allies lost some troops outright, which is a good sign, and also took a lot of infantry disablements. Ours should recover well due the two Army HQs here! [:)] Once the Allied fleet looks to be moving a bit I'll try a test flight of more troops, but with 115 P-47s next door that might prove difficult. I could try barging some in, but his guns might wreck them before the joined their friends. He'll most likely leave some naval presence here for a good while though.

The MTBs again caused havoc and I've bought two more for tomorrow. The subs are all converging tomorrow, some that were in range and sighted and others with no DL that were hang in on the perimeter. I've got some coming from every direction to make sure the CVs don't jig again and avoid us completely. I'd like to get 20 subs in the same hex with his heavy fleet units and see what happens!

All of our undamaged fighters have been removed to Babedaob and Pagan. I've also got one small surprise which most likely will result in losses for me, but it'll be fun to see if it changes anything. I also put some deep search in the Gilberts and Marshalls, at Marcus and Ponape to see if cripples leave the area or other unprotected convoys are moving up behind out of normal search range. I've got the Bettys now with radar, so I'll see if that does anything more than usual to naval search.

SUBS: The RO-41 came through and paid the ultimate price, hitting CVE Kweijalen. That's what you get for having a ship named after a base that's not even conquered yet! [:D] No planes were listed as lost on the ground, so I'm sure this one limped to Tinian and is being disbanded there for now.

Another mini came through again, hitting xAK Cape Cumberland with one TT. Love getting these to work here. Well worth the price this time, and I think it must be helped by the massive TFs he's running.

DEI: Jolo falls at last. The doors to the South China Sea are slowly opening.

S/SW PAC: I've got lots looking around down here now and I'll see if there are any opportunities available in the next few days.

S DEI: Lots of sigint from Darwin so there could be another jump. Especially as my ships are locked in place due to the mines at Lomblen. I got fuel to the AMc and it should arrive tomorrow. The Ams are still a few days out. So far no hits and lots of held breath.

BURMA: Jocke bombs with everything right at Tavoy. No sweeps though. Either they were rained in or he's playing with me, trying to get me to come out. I did put to extra fighter group on LR CAP here to see if he likes the first try enough to do it again. Most likely I'll see about 150 P-47s.

The Allied troops crossed the river and are now on our side. So they are four days away. I'm sending more supply immediately and getting the just arrived extra arty units some forts. Everything else has built one fort and two for all infantry units.

INVASION: TAVOY
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

With all of the things going on in the Marianas and the Phillipines I haven't been entirely focused on Burma. Jocke's troops did make it across the river to within a four day walk of mine, but not all of them. Some went on a little ferry ride.

My Jakes from Victoria Point and the Kates from the Andamans apparently missed an entire invasion fleet yesterday, and today there is around 750 AV sitting at Tavoy plus more still unloading. Very interesting.

This caused me some major panic as you can imagine. I had all naval strike planes stood down and doing other things, and I even turned off he 90 Oscars I had on low naval for the past several months over here to use on LR CAP. Well, those got clobbered along with some other Franks, and a anding came in 3 hexes from one of my biggest airfields.

I could have done a lot more here, but instead of kicking myself, I stopped and looked around and realized that Jocke's stack is still across that river and can't just sail to Tavoy. I will now add some naval strike planes and see what I can do, but its too late to hit things on ships I'm sure. My garrison of one independent brigade will not last long here, but it is a +3 hex and it does have 5 forts. Should I send every transport in range to get more troops in?

That's one option. Another is to simply move units back from other areas, get about three divisions into the Bangkok area and hold him here. Moving forward from these costal bases is not so easy. He could hop down the coast, but that will likely be vulnerable too, and take time. My thinking is settling now, but I'm still not sure how to respond. I won't throw everything in. Whatever happens will be calculated toward one goal; to keep sending oil back to the HI as long as possible.

6 October, 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are some mornings where you wake up and think, 'I might still be able to hold them for a bit longer. Maybe the Allies will stall and not get to the SRA in time to stop the oil.'

Then there are mornings like this one when it's very clear that some way, by whatever small crack is left open, a good Allied player will find a way forward. This is one of those mornings.

BURMA: This is a crisis, but no more major than any other Japan is facing right now in late 44. There are enough troops to overwhelm Tavoy and unless by some miracle of dice rolls and terrain the base will fall tomorrow.

So the plan is as show on the map above. Simply send in the reserves. Get them into good jungle positions. Stop any advances, and try to keep more stuff from arriving by sea. I'll have to get a naval presence down here. Not too much, but enough to keep him from easily sending transports in loaded with supply and more troops. I'll also have to really start sending even more supply from the HI, which will be a drain.

My guess is he might just go for Bangkok fields in the middle of all of this, so I haven't stripped any CAP to deal with the interlopers, but have brought in more groups from elsewhere. Today he might not be able to do anything as he'll most likely LR CAP the fleets still, but tomorrow or the next day, look out.

[The only troops flying into Tavoy for the upcoming battle are the search group commanders fro Port Blair and Victoria Point, all of whom have been issued a sword and a rising sun headband] [;)]

CENTRAL PACFIC: I sent the CL Sakawa and two small DD in to Saipan on a kind of 'kami' naval mission, but they engaged the Allied BBs and came away without a scratch! No long lance hits though. Their prize is another trip tomorrow.

The MTBs force a plethora of poor navigation in the Allied fleets and several ships look to be in dire straits from multiple collisions. These are just xAKs, but every little bit helps. The Rufus King had three collisions alone! The Allied CVs pull away to 6-7 hexes and avoid all subs, which sucks. They did send a few strike packages unescorted at Pagan and lost about 40 planes there going for my tanker TF. Interesting.I'm sure the Corsairs will now show up to deal with us.

SUBS: The minis keep on chugging with another hit today. They're batting 50% for this deployment! Amazing!

In other news an the US sub Tang had been stationary in the shallows near Borneo for two days. That wasn't a good choice. While I was missing any DL on a major invasion behind my lines my search did light this sub with neon and it was duly dispatched by two E.

S/SW PAC: My new search does show a few TFs in the area between the Marianas and Wake, but with the retreat of the Allied CVs in that direction there's no chance of doing anything there. Could help for subs though.

S DEI: My AMc cleared about 65 mines before hitting one and going under. Now the AMs will have to take care of the rest. My ships are still trying not to move! [;)]

Since I see the numbers going up I assume someone besides myself is actually looking at this. Curious why input has dropped to almost nothing. Is it that many are reading both AARs and don't want to give anything away unintentionally?

Anyway, pretty quiet and boring without contributions from others. I like writing this, but I'd really love some ideas from anyone else. This is my first time through this far and i have no idea what I should be doing in late 44 other than frantically swinging.

Ok. Back to updates.

CVEs ENGAGED!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is a screenshot I like quite a lot!!!

While Jocke was busy sending several DD TFs after my MTBs, the fast torpedo equipped Es popped in and found the CVE TF here. They did quite well, but couldn't land a decisive TT hit even from 6k. At least this slows the CVEs further and makes them a bit vulnerable. He might send them into Tinian for a rest, I would guess. If not he'll be trying to skirt a lot of subs tomorrow.

More surface ships sent in as well. The small Sakawa TF will return for a third night and two more small DD and E TFs will try to race in and see if there is anything they can mess up.

Subs are going for the main CV fleets and the oilers it looks like they're trying to refuel from 7-8 hexes off the Marianas.

Well, I'm not sure I have much of a better one either. [:)]Appreciate the note though. It's just good to hear a voice every once in a while in here!

Comments from Allied players are often the most interesting. It would be great to know if some of the stuff going on looks normal, or if the defense is either weak or strong during the last months. I read a few late AARs, but there aren't many to choose from and it's hard to see the 'plan' of defense through the daily struggles. Strategic and other ideas about the late game are very welcome.

I feel the same sometimes. But the view count suggests that there are people reading AARs.

I am here. Some nice small victories for you there. Very puzzled as to why you are still in Burma at this point though.

Hi Obvert,
Still following you your AAR isn't boring at all I prefer it than reading newspaper:
I'm on holiday in Mallorca beach so a little lazy [8D] [:D] at posting...
More I've reached only jan 43 in my game so not expert in late war.
One thing I noticed is that in islands you defend at most with minor units: i mean rgt, bgd, etc...
If you can reform some divisions they can stand much better against allied. The smaller the unit the bigger the damage that receives.
Another thing, you also lacks AT and heavy art in islands, so enemy tanks can eat your infantry alive...
I don't think you need AT btns in burma, divisions have already enough AT power enbedded,
if you can airlift in islands they could much more useful!
Strategically I guess allied next move will be against luzon so to block oil transport towards HI.
Keep on! much fun with your AAR[;)]
